Kyle Shanahan Prepares for Week 11 vs. Cardinals | 49ers
What’s up, guys? All right, the injuries for practice today. Alfred Collins with the hip will be limited. Dwinners’s knees will be limited. Ricky Pcel knee will be limited. Brock Perie toe will be limited. That’s it. You said on Monday that you wanted basically three days of aggressive practices for Brock before determining. Yeah. Does that mean because he’s limited, does that mean that it can’t be an aggressive type of practice? No, it’ll be aggressive practice. We just we just got to put limited if it’s not exactly how it normally is. So, can you will he be running the first team offense? Are you are you trying to build him toward the point where he can start on Sunday? Yes. For this week? Yes. Okay. We haven’t seen practice obviously. How has he looked as far as his mobility, accuracy, you know, how’s he looked? Uh I think each week it’s gotten better. Uh with last week being the best. I mean, each week has been different. Um so if he takes a big step forward this week, um like he did last week, uh he should have a good chance to play. A hard decision to make given how well Mac Jones been playing recently? Uh, no, it’s not a hard decision. It’s just more about Brock’s health. It’s been awesome how Max’s played. He’s he’s been great. Um, but we got a lot of confidence in Brock and we know Brock will play at a high level, too, as long as he’s healthy. Look at as as a coach with him in terms of his mechanics and fundamentals. You you watch the footwork and like his release and stuff or is that more like you you’ll get to that on film? Like what do you catch on the field? Uh, you can just feel it. I mean, a guy you’ve been around for a while like I have, Brock, I mean, you can just feel how the ball comes off, how he moves, how he reacts. Um, yeah, I can get in the film room and stare at it for a lot longer than I probably should. Um, and I could do that on the field, but I watch other things, but usually couldn’t feel it on the field. Did you feel it against Jacksonville that it wasn’t right? Uh, yeah. Yeah, it felt a little off. Yeah. Does his being a preparation junkie help him get back to the field and be ready faster? Uh, it’s the only way you can be. I mean, if when you’re hurt, if you check out in football, um, just with what happens every week from a game plan standpoint, from how much goes on for a quarterback and still all other positions, if you check out while you’re injured, um, you can’t come back and play right away. Coach, have you had to have a discussion about not pressing once he does come back? Not pressing. Yeah, not pressing, especially mentally and feeling the pressure, the outside noise. Uh, no. Yeah, no, we haven’t talked about that. Um things we’ve talked about is just making sure when you come back that you feel 100% so you don’t have to worry about anything like that. Uh Brock’s feeling 100% and confident in that way. Then um I think he’s got nothing to worry about on a game. Is there a point in the season where you um as far as the Thursday practices take off the pads and sort of uh pull back on the on the Thursday sessions? Not on Thursdays. I mean we we have to by a certain time. I think we’re allowed 15. So I think we always stop then. Um, a lot of times on Thursdays we’ll get two periods in and take them off the second two. Um, most of the time, most depends on what who I have on the team, but usually guys don’t like that. Like like Trent never wants to take the pads off once they’re on. It’s just more annoying for them. Um, you practice a little bit differently as the year goes, whether you have pads on or off, but that’s something we usually do like the last five weeks. you had to go a little bit lighter on the Thursday sessions just given all of the the injuries that that you’ve you’ve been dealing with this. Uh yeah, we did last the last two weeks because of some injuries. Um and they’ve affected our last three Wednesdays also and they’ll affect today. When it comes to Ricky Pieraw, you were kind of slightly detailed about what you were hoping to see out of Brock before you kind of gave him the go-ahhead to go out there and play. You did say you were hoping to get Ricky Pierce back out there this weekend. What are you hoping to see out of him in practice? Um as far as reps or how he’s moving to ensure that you’re okay putting him out there on Sunday. Um I mean they told me he’s healthy so I’ll see today from Elon eyes when he practices and I’m sure he’ll look that way and as long as he does and he’s good to go. Well you asked been asked about this earlier in the season. Um it’s still ongoing. You guys haven’t had a run of more than 20 yards in 10 games. Highly unusual. You’re the only NFL team without that. Do you have any more thoughts about why that is? What’s going on? Uh, no. I’d have to go into all the runs and stuff. I can’t give you one reason, but um, that involves everybody. So, um, it’s one of the reasons we’re struggling, though. I mean, if you don’t get big runs, you’re never going to have those yards. You’re never going to have those stats. And, um, I think we’ve done a better job running the ball here this last month. Um, but we still haven’t found a big one. And, uh, that’s what we need to get. I hesitate to ask is Christians having might be offensive player of the year candidate, but I mean his age and injuries, I mean, is he less any like any less explosive? Is that possibly any part of that? Uh, no, I don’t see it that way. What’s the challenge like this week? Arizona’s defense, what are they looking like? Uh, I think they got a real good defense. I think they got a real good team. I mean, I’ve been in their situation before. I remember I think they tied a record or one that we had or my first year here as a head coach when we lost five games by a field goal or less in a row. Um I saw that same thing happen to them. Uh I think they’re a team that could be sitting here very easily with the exact same record as us if not better. Um they’ve had some tough ones and when you look at the film, they look like a team that has a winning record. Uh the way their defense plays, they’re very well coached. The guys that they’ve added this off seasonason on the Dline um helped them a ton. Um I think offensively they know how to move the ball. I think Brassette’s been playing very well this last month. Um I see a well coached team who plays really hard and seems to be in almost every game they’re in. I know last week got away from them very early. Um but besides that, uh seems like they’ve had a chance to win every game they played in. Ryan Robinson Jr. seems really confident right now. Would you say he’s earned more carries the last few weeks? Uh yeah, I would. I think four weeks in a row he’s had his best game. Um so each week it keeps getting better. When Brock does come back, considering the toe, as you’ve said, probably won’t be 100% again this season. Do you have to tell him to maybe limit the mobility or stay out of situations where he could aggravate it or how does that conversation No, that was the case you want to come back. You know, I think um when you have if you got to tell a guy to not be mobile and to stay out of situations, it’s kind of hard to be successful. I mean, when a guy gets out on that field, he’s got to react and play. And if he doesn’t if he doesn’t feel that way, which I’ll watch from practice and talking to him, um then then he won’t go. Considering Brock’s Brock’s ability, I mean, Christian’s ability to be flexed and play in this slot, is there a reason why he and Robinson seemingly almost never are on the field at the same time? Um, I mean, I I it depends what how the defense plays it. I mean, just them being on the same field to just um think advantage of when you have two running backs and they go nickel all the time, that to me that doesn’t mean you necessarily have two running backs. That means you have three receivers um because now they’re going against all corners instead of linebackers and safeties. um which can give you advantage to run if one of your running backs wants to play fullback. Um so we could do that but like that’s just putting two runners out there because one’s good in the pass game. Um you know if they want to stay base and stuff and play us like we have a fullback in there then that could be an advantage because now he’s out there having the advantage of a fullback being in the game which means you’re going against a linebacker or safety. So um it really depends on how the defense would play it and um they don’t tend to play us that way. And kid said the other day that sometimes after a win, he thinks that the team feels maybe they’re farther along than they are. And Christian said there’s just something about locking in after a loss. Do you feel that that’s natural? And do you feel that everybody’s pretty locked in this week? Yeah, I think our guys are pretty locked in every week. Um I think I think you know, human nature always like it’s something I’ve watched my whole career. Um you know, when you when you watch teams lose and their backs are against the wall, you you see on film usually a more desperate team the next week. That’s something I’ve seen forever and that’s something we talk about all the time. So, um, you know, players repeat that, but KB’s been a long round enough to know that happens. But, um, it’s something we’re very aware of and something that we don’t feel that’s sway at all. I think our guys, um, I think we get their best week in and week out. You seem to be having success running three tight end formations this season. What kind of schematic issues does that present to a defense? Do you feel like it’s something your offense could do? Uh, yeah, definitely. You know, it’s it’s something that we do do at times. We’ve done it more in some games. I mean, as long as you consider juice a tight end, you know, u which they’re used the same. Uh I know the Rams put those numbers up a lot these last couple weeks. Um but I think it all looks to how a defense plays you. I mean, if you want to get them in certain personnel groupings, it can help. Um you got three guys on the field who can handle edges better, which usually gives you more space in the run game. And then but then you got to see how one of those matches up versus a corner. Uh um people like Richard Sherman and Tom Brady have advocated for you to stick with a hot hand in Mac. You’re obviously not going to follow their advice. Um but I mean do you think like people might forget how good Brock has been? I mean just you know it’s like hey Max’s playing really well. Is there an element of just like you know how how good Brock has been for you guys? Uh you know what he’s been helping? Yeah I mean I I just think that’s the world. I mean, anytime a backup quarterback comes in and plays good, I mean, that’s all anyone talks about, you know, I don’t I don’t think anyone talks about what people have done in the past. Um, whether it’s Brock or whether it’s anybody. I mean, that’s just how the world works when with media or anybody. So, I don’t look too much into that stuff at all. Um, we all know how good Brock’s played in the past. Uh, and I think he played really good vers. And I think he struggled versus Jacksonville, which is why we shouldn’t have brought him back then. Um, and I know when Brock comes back, he’ll he’ll play the same way. He always has, like a very high level quarterback. How have both Brock and Ricky been through this whole process? I know both of them thought they were going to get back on the field faster than what how it happened. Um, you can ask them that. I think they feel like a typical guy who’s made of the right stuff, who guys hate being hurt and they feel uncomfortable when they’re hurt. And I mean, remember when I was hurt and I you all your friends mess with you like like you’re faking it or something and you feel guilty all the time. you want to be out there with all your guys. So, um when when you’re injured in sports, it sucks. Um you want to be out there doing what you do and especially when you think it’s going to be one, two weeks and ends up blasting a lot more than that. So, I know they’ve been frustrated. Uh they make it they’re always showing how hard they’re trying to come back. And I just keep telling them, guys, we’re very well aware of how bad you guys want to be out there. Um but we got to make sure you’re right. And um each week they’ve had they haven’t been able to get there, but um hopefully this will be the week. you were confident that Brock was ready to return week four, but he ultimately wasn’t. Um, you’re confident that he’s ready to return now or getting there. What makes you confident that you’re right this time? Um, I think the last six weeks, um, you know, that’s why I’ve handled it this way. Um, and it has to do more with kind of what he tells me and than what I see. Um, so it’s going both. All right, guys. All right. Thanks, guys.

Breaking News: At a press conference held earlier today the San Francisco 49ers admit they cannot get the taste of Matthew Stafford's Nutsack out of their mouths after the severe TEABAGGING the Rams gave them last Sunday in their own stadium.
They would be wise to sign Brian Robinson Jr. for next year since they clearly don't think Jordan James would help the team this year.
They should have never let Corey Kiner or Jordan Mason go either. CMC took this offense to another level when he first arrived. At this point, I think he's holding them back, as a RB anyway.
Mac Jones is like the guys who undeservedly win comeback player of the year awards just from being solid after being really bad! Last 5 games he has 7 TDs and 5 INTs plus 1 fumble lost! 7-6 TD to turnover ratio and everyone is glazing him just Becuz he used to be a laughingstock! He’s a good backup but average starter! Enuff with this bullshit fake QB controversy narrative! Our Captain is returning and anyone not driven by clicks or Brock hatred is very excited! For All u brock haters Told what to think by Cohn and his cronies… Enjoy the show!
