Kellen Moore on Rashid Shaheed, Trevor Penning trades | New Orleans Saints
All right. Um, okay. So, we’ll start with a couple roster things. Estimate came up to the 53. Obviously, Kziah is back on practice squad. And then as far as medical, Tally was a DMP today with the ankle. Alvin and Jack were limited guys with the ankle. And then the full participant guys, Taesm with a knee, Cam with an ankle. Barry Wesley is back. He was activated off the IR. So, he’ll start uh his window with his hip. So, he’s back at practice. And then Jonah has a shoulder he’s maintaining. So, uh, those are the main things that have occurred. So, open up for questions with, um, this kind of more of a like philosophical, but like when you have an opening script, like ideally, when should all those plays be done? I know it’s like the first 15, but is it the first two drives, like the three? Like when do you kind of stop calling a script? Yeah. Um, yeah, you’re going to have an opening, you know, 15 to 20 plays. Obviously third downs are somewhat separate from the first and second down plays and then uh you’re rolling through it. Obviously circumstances uh you have to shift within it. It’s not a 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 uh straightforward but um you know hopefully that puts you through uh two or three series if you have you know two really long successful series that really flushes you out and then you move on to the next component of it. Are there anything you’re seeing with kind of the opening drives for during the week? Just kind of ask them on Monday, but anything more? Yeah, continue to study it. Uh we got, you know, execute, get some cleaner ops, just get some freebies and uh you know, get the get the sense of urgency going. Um you know, so we’ll obviously do everything we can to get that. Kevin, what’s the kind of the temperament of the team when you get out groups like that and you know sending guys off guys are start what’s kind of the temperament of the team the next day you know after you see all that that activity happen? Yeah, there’s a the personal side of this thing’s real. It’s uh it’s it’s not easy for any of us. Um you know, you get to know these guys on a personal level and you love them and um there’s a business component of this thing that um obviously is the reality of it. So, um, you know, we we lost two guys that, you know, have contributed for this organization for a long time, have been positive examples to everyone around this place. And so, uh, you know, it’s going to provide opportunities for some other guys. And there’s certainly some excitement, I think, from that component. Um, but those guys will go on and and still have success in this league, uh, just like they have it here as well. Kevin, you and Mickey both said recently that you were trying to develop young players while still trying to win on Sundays, and I’m sure that never changes, but when you trade your number two receiver and your starting left guard and don’t get any assets that help this year and you’re one and eight, is that an acknowledgement that the future is a little more in the forefront than maybe it was earlier? I think it’s a combination. Um, obviously there’s a there’s a future component of this that’s real with with the uh what came back in return, but uh it provides opportunities for some guys that we feel really good about. Um, you know, for Dylan to hop in there at left guard and Dylan’s going to play left guard and he’s going to play great. And uh, you know, obviously he’s had he’s had some success in this league. He’s he’s played well when we’ve asked him to play. Uh, receiver room, you know, Vele, Tip, Cookie, like those guys are going to obviously play more snaps naturally. the snaps will get distributed to those guys and so their roles will increase which we have a lot of confidence in those guys as well and so uh you know obviously there’s I think you can like you said you can compete and go go after each and every one of these games like we always do u and still provide yourself with something in the future as we develop this thing when you look at a team like the Panthers who are you know the second year of their coach and seem to really turn things around based on what they were the past few years and how they’ve kind of quickly retoled and revamp things. I mean, what do you think of them uh kind of being able to do that? Yeah, they’ve done a nice job. I think uh you know, as they’ve gone, they’ve uh adjusted and you know, created, you know, I think the last few weeks, you can certainly see that they’ve created some uh consistency, some rhythm, and a flow and uh and and a really, you know, successful formula that has worked for them. They’re running the football really, really well. Uh they’re keeping people out of scoring touchdowns on defense, uh controlling the game under under their terms. And so, uh, they’ve done a nice job the last few weeks and obviously they’ve played some big time opponents and won some games because of it. How do you replace Shahed’s particular skill set? Yeah, it’ll have to be a combination of those guys. Uh, obviously there’s the vertical threat that she has that um is rare in this league. Uh, he certainly uh do lose that component. We feel like there is still some speed with our group. Uh, Cookie’s done done it for a long time in his career. Bay and Tip have some speed to get downfield and so we feel like we got those guys that will be able to supplement that. And uh you know I’m excited for those guys opportunities moving forward. Where is Troy Palmer at and his return to kind of build some of that? Yeah, we’ll see how it goes. His uh his is going to take a little while and so uh you know he he’s progressing the best he can but you know he’ll be he’ll be a while. Is is like three speed guys your preference or is that just kind of how the card shook out and that that’s what was available? Like if you were building from scratch, would you go that way? I think speed’s always, you know, one of the most valuable assets. uh first thing from receivers catching the football but speed obviously is very very valuable and I think uh you I think our guys moving forward will will obviously have some roles defined for them those those guys I think uh you know they I’m really excited about his role you know being able to play kind of that combination of uh you know the the Z receiver where he can play off the ball and be aligned for all the run blocking stuff but then he gets all the action game stuff off it and so Tip obviously is um you know every time we’ve asked Tip to play you know through preseason all these different opportunities he’s had over the last couple years he’s he’s done a nice job and so these opportunities are going to provide for him and so I think um you know as we develop this you know obviously their roles will be a little bit more defined a little bit more specific and uh I think there’ll be some positives coming out of that. Is the role you envisioned for Bailey like was it blocked by Shri at all? Like was it anything there preventing him getting? I don’t think necessarily. No. Um you know I think u the way these games shook down you know on my far on my part I’m I’m focused on that is trying to get Vale as many opportunities as we can. We felt good about him coming in. Had a little injury in the middle of it that kind of uh slowed a little bit of the, you know, the installation part of it, but uh he’s done a nice job so far and so uh certainly he’s going to carry a healthy healthy role the rest of the way through this thing and uh he’ll be very involved and I’m excited about that. Back to the trade deadline, a guy that probably got a lot of interest was uh was Chris Alave. How how much interest kind of was there in him and how important was it for for you to have him kind of still be here through through this whole thing? Yeah, I I love Chris. Chris has done an awesome job through this whole process. Uh we’re going to continue to build this thing together and uh I have all the confidence in the world in that guy. Uh the way he practices, the way he works, uh he gets better each and every opportunity and so uh he’s going to be a big part of this thing in my mind for for a long time for us and uh he’s going to have a huge impact on our success uh when we get there. with the record obviously not being what you wanted it. Is there are you seeing signs of of things tracking along like where you wanted to other areas beyond that you know yeah I think uh you know you’re always looking at your process uh make sure the process is right we’re doing the best uh you know from that standpoint and obviously results are the most important part of it but we got to make sure our process is uh going the right direction I think our guys work really hard. Uh they progress uh they put in the work during the week and ultimately we haven’t gotten the Sunday results that we want, but uh I think our guys are heading in the right direction. We got some young guys that have gotten better through the course of this thing. We’re going to learn u allow a lot of these guys to grow as we go through this process. And so uh you know there’ll be some u some really good success because of that. Is there anything about the process that you’ve identified because the results haven’t been there that you feel maybe differently now? Yeah, just find you’re just finding every little opportunity to to get better. Um, you know, I don’t think necessarily there’s always these big overarching themes. There’s, you know, how we practice, how we meet, how we walk through, how we get ready for Sundays. Can we get better in those aspects? Um, you talking about starting fast. We we got to find a solution there. What are we doing that what are the little things that we can potentially do to help uh, you know, increase that opportunity? Why they uh could you just explain the play call the other day with Tasem on fourth and two and why you’d rather have that than say like evaluate Shock in that situation? Yeah, short yardage situation. Yeah, fourth down. Uh felt good about the run. Felt like we had a great opportunity there to get a first down and then you know you basically got four downs to go score after that and so uh you know it didn’t it didn’t turn out the way we wanted to. I got to do a better job there. Um didn’t give ourselves the opportunity. But like how do you weigh that with, you know, it’s a young quarterback in theory you should want? Yeah, we’re trying to we’re trying to go win win a football game. Uh we’re trying to win the football game and Tyler’s going to have plenty of third and fourth downs through that whole entire game that he’s going, you know, he had plenty already. Uh and he’s going to have plenty moving forward as well. And so, um again, we’re trying to go win football games and Tyler’s going to get to grow in a ton of experiences as he goes through this. Does that a little just in terms of when to put Taesm in and when to leave him on the field and just in terms of you know probably don’t want to put the quarterback in the third and nine cold off the bench like how do you balance that? Yeah, there’s there’s a little bit of balancing act of it. Um want to try and create some flow. So you know Taesm can stay in for a couple plays which we did at one point in that game and then the situational football stuff whether it’s short yardage, red zone, there’s a few specific areas that obviously Taesm tends to play um you know specifically in and he’s had a lot of success because of that. So, thanks Phil. All right. Thanks, guys.

Question: When will Loomis get fired?
Why the Taysom questions? Saints offense before his big run: 3 drives, 12 yards, no first downs. Taysom made the game interesting, until the defense completely collapsed in the third quarter.
get thomas back
scripted plays, lol.
Pure coincidence Shuck had three 3-n-outs to start the game… and then he's on the bench and Taysom Hill is playing QB (and they score on that drive).

Still supporting you Coach. Get them right. Fully believe you will bring greatness back to this franchise! Who Dat! βοΈ
Shaheed????!!!!! Not OLAVE????? Somebody take Olive oil hands for a 4th rounder
I believe Kellen will make this work , we lost Shaheed but we still got Olave
FIRE Loomis!!!!!
Trade Ak he deserves to be on a better team.. fire Mickey loomis we are still suffering from drew brees not retiring being greedy chasing Brady and them records ..dat knocked us from drafting a franchise quarterback
Get michael thomas back
I love alvin kamara , he's a dam good running back, but he dont have no offense line. I want to see kamara win a super bowl. The saints need to replace mickey loomis. The saints can win with the players they currently have , you just have to go out there and out perform the opposition.. the.saints players are just as good or better than their opposition….you got to have that confidence.and go out there and tell yourself you is a better athlete than the opposition. The.saints have to go out there and get it done…..the saints should have gotten rid of jwan Johnson instead of Rasheed, jwan Johnson is not consistent, he fumble to much and not securing the football. The key to winning football games is no turn over , teamwork and less penalties… with all due respect Davis, Jordan getting older, they not as mobile and effective like they once was, we need that youth, i think kellen moore is the right man, he will get it done, just give him a little time…..no coach can come in and change things overnight..
trash organization
clueless coach
We love you coach moore βοΈ
Please give more carries to Devin Neal. Kamara is great but we want to see the young guys play
Our season is done. Shut down Kamara, we want to see the young guys play.
You have Alvin why donβt you run the offense through him
Youβve been saying the same thing every week
Stop the run and you can mop these losers coach!
Penning, yea… He sucks.
But Shaheed, keeping "my pillow" Olave's soft ass, WTF?
Get rid of ruiz
