TRADE NOW: Houston Astros Weigh Jake Meyers’ PEAK Value and Brendan Donovan Rumors Explode
Well, there’s plenty to talk about this Astros off season. Jake Meyers, Brendan Donovan, and maybe some others. The Astros are looking at trading. What’s going to happen to this roster? Brett kind of summarized it, but there’s been a lot of talk about Jake Meyers after his career season in 2025. His peak trade value could be right now. Is this the best time to trade him or should the Astros hold on to him? And what is all this Brendan Donovan talk? I mean, they already have a crowded infield as is. Why are you going to add another piece to the puzzle? There’s some reasoning behind it. We’ll talk about that. and James Hicks. Why should you know who James Hicks is? We’ll talk about this and more. Thank you for uh tuning in to us all off seasonason. We are the Lockdown Astros podcast and we will be here throughout the way. Yeah. Um first off, before we get started, I do want to say a special thank you to Big City Capzone and my guy Joe Muscott. Uh, the hat that I’m wearing tonight on the show um is the called the Anakin Skywalker and it’s got the blue and silver and the new City Connect hat with the brown and the black brim. It’s one of my favorite hats. I just had to send a shout out to my guy Steve um and Job for sending me this hat. But yeah, you know, there’s some exciting stuff happening here. And the Brendan Donovan name was was the intriguing thing or was the thing that caught caught my attention. You know, I wasn’t surprised to hear Dana Brown say things like Cam Smith is going to have to compete for the starting position in right field. Um he talked about possibly him playing Triple A again next year. And so those are things that you kind of expect. But Brendan Donovan is someone that I think the Astros have been interested in in the past and he plays second base. He’s a left-hander, Eric. And we know someone else that plays second base, uh, Jose Altuve. But we also know that his skills have declined enough for the Astros to go, hm, maybe you should play left field instead of second base. And then they brought in Ramon. I’m not going to say his last name because every time I do, somebody sends me a DM saying I’m mispronouncing it. So, um, Ramon is a guy that would also, you know, be there at second. You know, Mauricio Dubon would play second or could play second. So, like you mentioned, Eric, it is a crowded um infield, but Brennan Donovan makes makes sense to me. Um, he he seems like a guy that could that could fill in well. Um, I just wonder what place Eso Parades is going to go. So, is Jake Meyers the trade piece for a Brendan Nonovan? No, I don’t think that the two are related at all. I think I don’t think I think the Cardinals are looking to rebuild. So, um, let’s let’s go and focus on Jake Myers first, then we’ll get to Brendan Donov Donovan in a second. But Jake Myers over the weekend, I know that Tanner Rome kind of hinted at it, but according to Matt Gelb with the uh Phillies, he’s a beat writer over there. He said Meyers considered a strong defender, does not hit for power, but he could be a decent alternative to Harrison Bader if he lands elsewhere. Houston is fielding calls on Meyers. So, the key word there is that Houston is taking calls on Jake Meyers. Uh Jake Myers had a career season last year. We know that he’s had he’s kind of battled uh injuries throughout his whole career. And when James Click left, it was Jake Meyers who kind of uh brought up the whole return to uh uh return to play uh question marks because he came back a little too early and then was not ready to play. But this past season, yes, it wasn’t a He’s not going to hit a lot of home runs, but he batted at 292 with three home runs, had 16 stolen bases, scored 53 runs, had a 354 OPS on base percenting, sorry, a 727 OPS with a OPS plus of 103. So, he is a above, let’s just say a slightly above average uh outfielder at this point. I know his war was 2.4. So his trade value is probably the highest that it’s going to be at this point. He has two years of control left. And I believe that his um arbitration number is a reasonable uh what was it? 3 million. So sorry uh yeah 3.5 million. So he is a valuable asset to another team. I don’t think a team like Cardinals would want want him because they’re trying to get younger, but another team like the Phillies, another playoff contender that wants that elite defender because I know we’ve brought up many times that he doesn’t have the strongest arm, but he can go out there and pick it in center field. Yeah, definitely. No, you’re right. And um Brennan Donovan and Jake Myers, I got my wires crossed on that. It is it is the Phillies obviously um you know off of off of the article um written I just I was I had I had both subjects on my mind. Um the Phillies make an interesting trade partner. Um because I wonder like who we would be able to get from them Eric in this. Now you know Jake Myers they don’t he doesn’t have the power but like you said he’s an elite glove. He does, I think, stand to be at his highest value as a trade piece because he’s one of the top three or top 10 center fielders every year he’s out there in the field. And when he stays healthy, he can actually do really well. And and and so if Jake Myers leaves, I believe you’re probably going to have some other guys that can fill in. um you know, Zack Cole, Jacob Melton, but it makes you wonder, do they go out and get somebody else in center field or they just or they just play with house money and deal with men that are in house? Um I I think a Jake Myers trade would be intriguing. I I just wonder what the return would be and who else are they going to have to couple in that trade in order to get somebody, you know, what what name on the Phillies roster or in their system would they go for? You know, are they looking to trade major league player for major league player? I think it’s more of a uh they they’re trying to they have a uh a lot of depth in the outfield right now, especially if you’re going to have Alvarez and Altuve in the outfield. You have Cole that came that Zachary Cole that came up last year. So, you have a bunch of guys that are pretty good and you want to give Smith a chance. And it sounds like, like I talked about on Thursday, last week that they want to give Jesus Sanchez a chance to shine because they know what he can do as a player. So, um, what does that mean? Um, I don’t know how much Zack Cole has played in center field, but he it’s listed here that he is a center fielder. He could be that center fielder. So, if you did trade somebody like Jake Myers, he can go ahead and just transition to center field. And then you can go ahead and What can you ask in return? Probably a young starting pitcher possibility. Possibly maybe a reliever. So, something that would help the Astros for this. You’re not um get somebody in return. Yeah, definitely. Um, you know what, Eric? Let’s go ahead and go to our first break, FanDuel, and then we’ll come back and talk more about Brendan Donovan as I kind of jump ship a little bit in that first segment. So, let’s go ahead and grab FanDuel and we’ll talk Brenda Donovan after this. Okay guys, thank you for making Lockdown Astros podcast your first listen every day. Hey guys, thank you for making Lockdown Astros podcast your first listen every day. Whether it’s on YouTube, go and subscribe to us. Go and make us first listen. Apple Odyssey, Spotify, wherever you listen your podcast, go and check us out. We’re part of locked on the number one podcast network out there and we thank you for um helping us get there be part of uh what we call the everyday club. So uh right now we kind of talked about Jake Meyers. We don’t know exactly what clubs are in on Jake Myers. We know that the Phillies have checked in on him reportedly, but we don’t know exactly what a trade package would look like. We do know that the Astros are definitely weak in terms of starting pitchers. We’ll start and we’ll talk about in the third segment James Hicks who’s somebody that could possibly help the Astros possibly in 2026. But for right now, uh let’s go and focus on Brendan Don Donovan because I know you shared some of your thoughts and um I know that Daniel Brown kind of um drew a line in the sand and said basically um that’s Christian Walker is their first baseman. They’re not making any they’re not going to trade him and they’re definitely not going to trade Eoach Bradies. But this is um he didn’t really rule it out. He just said that uh Walker is my first baseman as of right now. And things could change. This is all GM talk. This is just uh not making it seem like they’re really desperate because we know that Brett, it’s very clear they don’t want Alu playing second base like you mentioned earlier. They want to get somebody out there. And nothing against uh Don because he plays a great second base, but they don’t feel like he’s a everyday type guy. So, they’re looking for a somebody to play every day left uh in second base, somebody that’s not going to strike out a lot, and somebody that hits left-handed, which Brendan Donovan can’t. So, um that that’s a position that you can put him in. So the question is if you do that you’re going to have a log jam of infielders which means you’re likely going to have to trade either Parades or Walker or Brett. How long last year did we have to go without some of these players? So do you have do you keep more players than you need just to avoid the injury situations we had last year? Well, I still think it’s an anomaly. I I don’t think it’s something you’re going to battle year in and year out. Um I I think with it being a MLB record that you honestly really have got to just assume that it’s not going to happen this year. I believe Dana Brown when he says that they’re not going to trade um Christian Walker. I think they believe there’s a lot more in the tank and I believe that there is going to be um you’re going to see him there. Now, as far as Isoach Pedes, um, bringing in Brendan Donovan, I think, um, Ramon, unfortunately, Dubon and guys like that um, are all probably going to be on the trading block depending on what they can get. But I think Pedes definitely offers you more of a guy that’s going to see more pitches, that’s going to give you more opportunities to score. he was your RBI leader for pretty much all season. Um, even with his hamstring injury. Um, the only concern I have with Pis coming back is he didn’t have surgery on his hamstring and you wonder if that hamstring’s going to hold up in 2026. Now, on the left side of the field, you have Carlos Koreah who is often injured and so um, you know, someone like Dubon can fill in there. That won’t be a problem. But it’s the right side of the infield, first base and second base where you do get a log jam. You know, you you put here on the on the show notes why the infield is crowded. Look, they’ve got a plan. They they’re not going to just have all these players that are unnecessarily on the roster and not be able to use them, utilize them. I’m pretty sure Dana Brown and Jim Crane and the guys are playing 3D chess right now where most of us, no offense, are probably playing checkers. Like, and I have to be careful when I listen to these things. The reason why I say this because I think our our viewers and our listeners tend to do this too. You you want to take someone at their word. You want to believe the GM and when he says, “We’re not trading this guy.” We know in sports that that doesn’t always mean that’s what’s happening. But are you a better team with him or without him? And it’s just one of those things where I I don’t know what the line of thinking is with that crowded infield. It can’t be because they’re quote unquote waiting on, you know, more injuries to occur because again, my point being, I don’t think you’re going to see that many injuries again a second year in a row. I think it’s more of an anomaly and last year there were a lot of teams that dealt with a lot of injuries, too. Yeah. And I know if you’re looking at what Brendan Donovan did last year, he batted 287 with 10 home runs, 50 RBI’s, three stone bases on base percentage of 353, slugging percentage of 422 on base percentage, sorry, ops of 775 and OPS plus of 119. So, if you go ahead and plug that in at second base to be a regular guy at second base and the fact that he bats left-handed because the lineup was very right-handed last year, which was issue that the Astros wanted desperately to fix, that’s why they traded for Jesus Sanchez in the first place. They wanted to have an answer uh to uh trading Kyle Tucker. So, that’s the issue there. So, um he had a 2.7 war. So, and he has two years of control. I think his project projected number is about what 5.75.4 million. Uh so there is some value there. Um you’re going to have to compete with other teams. Other teams want a guy like this. So it’s not going to be a oh let’s just go and give up some of our worst players and go ahead and try to get this guy. You’re going to have to give up some quality players. But I don’t think this is going to be a situation where that you’re going to be able to say, “Hey, we got Christian Walker. you y’all want to take Christian Walker for uh this player? They’re not going to want somebody like that that’s making $20 million per season. They’re going to want somebody that’s mainly that’s has years of control. And so that’s the situation the Astros are in. They’re going to have to find a taker for somebody like Christian Walker. And I know the Twins are kind of going through a uh rebuild, so to speak, but uh they were interested in trading Christian for Christian Walker last year, but the Astros were the ones that said no. So look for them maybe to come back into the the fold here. But just because Dana Brown says we’re not looking to trade him now, that doesn’t mean set in stone it’s not going to happen. That’s just GM talk. That’s just, hey, well, this is our guy because what if nothing happens? You don’t want to say, oh yeah, we’re trying to trade Christian Walker. Well, you know what’s interesting and um I’m I’m coming back through this article as you’re um giving giving, you know, your side and and in and what you see be look because there is a lot to to to um peel away. I mean, this is a to quote Shrek, this is like an onion. I mean, it’s got layers, right? Um, what’s interesting is Dana Brown’s quote, “I know we have people talk about Walker, but we haven’t talked about Walker in any trade. Walker is our everyday first baseman.” Now, Jim Ro Jim Rome, I make that mistake. Chandler Roome did say that Brown avoided any absolutes. Yeah. Um, he he avoided any absolutes while remaining accurate that Walker is a first baseman. Then get this. He goes, “I’m sure there would be a market for Pedes if we decide to trade him, but right now we think he’s a guy that we do not want to trade here.” I mean, so you’ve got two statements about two players. One player that in the fans minds they don’t want to trade that they’re like, “Oh yeah, we could trade him if someone comes along.” to a guy that Astros fans absolutely want to trade because they’re just like you you don’t have a good season here. You’re out and Christian Walker and he goes, “Oh, no. He’s our everyday first baseman.” So, yeah, what is he actually saying? I don’t know. I wasn’t in the room. Wish I could have been in the room with the microphone. That would be a nice luxury to have for the show. But, um, we we don’t know. And this is my prediction. I don’t think we see any big movement until the winter meetings. I don’t think anything happens between now and the winter meetings because again, I think they’re playing 3D chess here. Yeah, we’ll see. I think that you can’t wait too long like we saw last year with Alex Bregman and some of the other players. If you wait too long, that market’s going to dry up pretty quickly. But, uh, I get what you’re saying. So, guys, we’ll go ahead and continue this discussion. Thank you for making Locked on Astros podcast your first listen. Part of the number one podcasting network out there. When we get back, we’ll talk about some guy named James Hicks and why you should know about him next. Apple, Odyssey, Spotify, wherever you listen your podcast. We’re your team every day. So, Brett, I know that we’ve been talking trade deadline and not trade deadline, but trade rumors, but it’s going to be all off season. So, we’ll be here to kind of walk you through it. And we don’t really know what’s going on in Dana Brown’s mind, but we do know that he’s got something that he he has this idea of who he wants to plug in at second base. If that doesn’t happen, he said he may be interested in having Isach Bradies playing some second base, but he has basically an idea of a rotation of players that he’s going to go and have um everybody play. So whether that means that Prades is the guy that kind of jumps from third base to first base, play some second base, play some DH, then where you gonna play Altuve? Is Alt even everyday player at this point? I guess it just depends on how he does next season. But uh there’s they’re just trying to look for other options including getting way to find Zack Cole to play some more especially at if he has a good season as he did and if they can’t trade uh Jesus Sanchez they want to have a place for him to play. So there’s just so many options. Um we could talk about this all night but uh we we’ll go ahead and take some questions a little bit later on in this segment but we do want to talk a little bit bit about James Hicks. I know earlier in the AFL we were talking about Anderson, how good he was doing, but uh James Hicks was kind of a guy that missed a lot of time this um this um minor league season because he had a fractured arm and so he was drafted out of store but overall he had a great season uh great AFL season. So Brett, you want to take over? Yeah. Um, so James Hicks, look, like Eric mentioned, broke his arm. He’s the organization’s 26th um rated prospect. And look, he he doesn’t have a ton of plus pitches, but he used every single one of them in the Arizona Fall League. Um he tossed 14 scoreless innings and got pitcher of the year by the Arizona Fall League. this 13th round pick from 2023 out of South Carolina is a guy that has six pitches is a a a guy that fits in the Astros. Um they are he is right in their wheelhouse, no pun intended. Um he literally elicited a 56% miss rate in the Arizona Fall League. That’s what the AFL is. It’s not the American Football League in case y’all were wondering if we were going football on y’all. But from the breaking ball menu, he can choose from a low80s sweeper to a more traditional low80s slider and an upper70s curve. Now, if you go back to guys like Greg Maddox who weren’t hard throwers late in their career, they learned how to paint the corners. Someone like James Hicks could profile as this. I mean, his overall miss rate of 34% led the fall league with 19 strikeouts over those 14 innings. Unbelievable. This is a guy, Eric, that I think is going to factor in more than likely sooner rather than later with the Houston Astros rotation. Um, and I absolutely am excited about this. He is right there one of the guys that just like in the past we’ve seen. Now, Gavin Dicki, who’s the Astros assistant general manager, said this. James has done a tremendous job over the last year of um plus of over the last year plus of continuing to develop quality secondary pitches. His baseline ability to throw strikes and pitch ability have always been present, but now he’s started to increase the swing and miss both in and out of the zone. Given his competitiveness, fuel to pitch, and added bat missing weapons, he is on track to becoming a viable starting pitcher option for us at the major league level. That’s all I need to hear. Sign me up. Let’s see what he does in spring training. Name his aart name him as a part of the rotation. I I mean, why not? Um this this is a guy that I think is ready. This is a guy that has confidence. And when your assistant GM is out here touting him and he wins this award, he is at a stage in his career where putting him on a major league mound would not be a bad idea and especially with the slim pickings they have right now. Um, let’s see what he can do. Maybe he is the guy that adds to that sixman in the rotation or maybe they bring him in halfway through the season to help get help get some guys some rest. He only has 39 games under his belt in the minor leagues. He’s 24 years old. I don’t know if right out of spring training he’ll make the rotation, but he’ll be one of those guys like we saw last year. The Astros had to use a lot of pitchers because of all the injuries last year. So, I’m sure you’re going to have the same type of situation, especially if the Astros go go out there and reinforce or tune up the rotation this year, especially if Valdez goes elsewhere. You’re going to need to have a lot of of starting pitching depth. And uh James Hicks could be one of those guys. I think there’s some guys ahead of him at this point. I think that the all the time he missed uh this year in Corpus really hurt, but the fact that he’ll probably start off in AAA and then get some experience there and then down the line he’ll get he’ll become an option. Uh they’ll see what he does in AAA. But I agree with you. This is a guy to be exciting about excited about even in um limited time this year. He had 46 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched. His RA was not great. 5.59 uh RA, but uh he shows that he can be a potential option down the road. So, I think he’s got some room to grow, but the fact that he did what he did in AFL, I think that definitely opened the Astros eyes a little bit. Right. And I I think his limited games have to do with his injury, but I think being 24 and coming out of college, I I think he’s someone that that that you could see sooner rather than later. And that’s why I say this year in, you know, and to your point, maybe not spring training, but where are they going to be at spring training? I think it’s inevitable that they add somebody, whether it’s Suarez, whether it’s King, whether it’s Cease, they’ve got to add somebody. I mean, they don’t have a choice here. They can’t just go out and get a Justin Verlander. Justin Verlander has to be a complimentary piece to a bigger piece of the puzzle. I mean, he’s got to he’s you know, when you go to an Italian restaurant, you know, they give you that bread and they put the olive oil and the seasoning like the bread and the seasoning. That’s what that’s what Justin Verlander is. You know, he’s he’s kind of like he’s not the main course. You’ve got to get a starting pitcher um out there that is going to fill and help Hunter Brown take off some of that load because he’s going to be carrying a big load right now. Uh because he is the number one pitcher and Frober more than likely is not going to be here next year. Yeah, I know. We’ll go ahead and talk a little bit more about Justin Berlander because there was some I don’t know if it was news but some rumors over the weekend from Bob Nightingale about Justin Berlander. So we’ll go and talk about that on tomorrow’s show. There’s also some updates um to some players health including Spencer Getty. We’ll go and talk about in tomorrow’s show. But something I did see on MLB trade rumors, um they did a it was a nice little breakdown about the um uh the I guess it was the of all the 30 teams, which teams would be the um which would be the most uh desirable location to be traded to. And the Astros were number 11 on the list. And uh there’s a lot of things that have going for them. One of the things that they did not have going for them is a lot of uh flexibility in terms of salary because they don’t have a lot of room before they get to that luxury tax threshold and their minor league system. It’s still ranked at 27th in baseball, but they still had a lot of good things to say about the Houston Astros. So, I think that a lot of people across baseball still believe in the Houston Astros. I believe Astros fans still believe in Houston Astros. And with the right moves, Brett, I think that the Astros still could be a contender for the playoffs. Now, with the right right moves, they can potentially go back to the World Series, but they’re going to have to really pick the right players. And like you said, uh you can’t just get the bread. You got to get the main courses this offse season and get the right ones, not just the bargain bin basement type of guys. Yeah. Sorry. I I had an amazing um Italian dinner this weekend in Galveastston. I was just thinking about it because it was that good. So that’s why I use that analogy. So you know without further ado, this has been a great good analogy. Yeah. Yeah. Well, um you know what? And next time when we’re on um I’ll share the name of the restaurant because it is worth mentioning. Hey, thank y’all for listening if you listen to us. Thank you for watching if you watch us. Um and we’re excited about the Everyday Club. Like like Eric mentioned at the top of the show, we’re going to have some new features, some exclusive features that you won’t get anywhere else. Um because I’ll tell you right now, no show does more than the Locked on Astros podcast. We thank you. Um Eric, uh glad you’re back. I’m sure you’re glad you’re not on the night shift anymore. And you know what? With with that, I guess we’re going to be out of here, man. All right, guys. Uh go Stros. We’ll see you tomorrow.
