I noticed that. I think the comparison I saw someone make a couple years ago to Phil Kessel was the right one. It’s not that he doesn’t back check, it’s that he doesn’t even really skate in that direction most of the time. Phil was at his best on the Penguins 3rd line with 2 defensive forwards who complemented his elite offensive game. Maybe a line with Roy and McMann is the answer there…

I dont know if that makes sense, but I dont think I’ve ever seen him skate hard to the bench. Very often leaves his teammates in poor situations.

You guys can’t have your cake and eat it too. You want a winger like Nylander to go all out offensively AND also play responsible defence. Then you complain about Matthews playing too much defence and not scoring enough goals. If a pure goal scorer can play all positions they should be paid 16 mil per year and be the most complete player in the league. How many of those exist at Nylanders price point. Someone bring on the stats to back up my claim.
11 other forwards, 6D and 2G every night. I’d take a guy who gets a lot of points but needs support from teammates than to have a whole team of people who can’t score but play the game the way these backseat fans want him to.
This guy steps up in the playoffs… how about we stop critiquing every little non back check he does. This guy suffers from migraines and maybe over exerting him self every night would cause him to miss games every year. Missed one game the past 4 seasons (not including this year) and 3 straight 40 goal seasons. Why the hell do fans always try to run people out of town.

I don’t know about you guys but if I was on a team of any sort, and one of the senior highest paid guys didn’t get many hard assignments, didn’t have to do any of the heavy lifting or listen to the boss, i wouldn’t really be happy. My enthusiasm and participation would suffer.

He is my most hated Leaf of all time. Not worth the money, good for at least a -1 every game. Can’t rush into the zone without turning it over. They continually try to set him up for the big wind up zone entry and he always turns it over. This guy will cost Bérubé his job.
