The $100M Price Tag That SCARED the Cubs! Chicago Cubs latest news today

You do not want to miss the daily updates now that the hot stove is heating up. I bring you the information as soon as I get it. All right, let let’s get right to it. I’ve been talking to some sources and closely monitoring the reports coming out of Chicago and the narrative Jed Hoyer’s front office is painting for this off season is crystal clear. The focus is pitching. This is no secret to us Northsiders. We saw what happened in 2025. We saw the games lost late and how the starting rotation looked gassed down the stretch. The priority is clear and it’s twofold. Starting rotation and crucially the bullpen. The starting pitching market, let’s be honest, doesn’t have the same sizzle as last year. We don’t have a Max Fried or a Corbyn Burns waiting to get paid. However, there are quality arms and I’ve heard plenty of chatter linking the Cubs to names like Michael King and even Dylan Cease. Though a cease trade seems complicated, but for me, the real needle mover, the true area of immediate need is the back end of the bullpen. We had moments of brilliance from Daniel Palencia in 2025, and he certainly proved himself a viable option. But relying only on him, that’s a risky bet if we want to truly contend in 2026. And this is where the name that makes every fan’s heart race comes in, Edwin Diaz. We are talking about the best closer available on the market and perhaps the most electric reliever of the last decade when he’s healthy. And he is healthy. Let’s look at the 2025 numbers with the Mets coming back from his injury. 62 appearances, 66.1 innings pitched, an absurd 1.63 erra, 28 saves, and 91 strikeouts. 91. That’s a 12.3K9 rate. He is game over. He is the guy who comes in to the sound of the trumpets and you as a fan can finally breathe a sigh of relief. He isn’t just a good arm. He is an elite level pillar who completely redefineses your bullpen structure. Adding him doesn’t just solidify the ninth inning. It makes the seventh and eighth innings easier for everyone else as it clearly defines roles. The reliever market this year is deep. We have Robert Suarez, Risel Glazias, Devin Williams, all very good guys, but Diaz is on a different tier. He is the grand prize. Uh and understandably the Cubs would be interested. Um having a guy like Diaz anchoring that bullpen would be a gamecher for this franchise. However, this is where doing the homework and talking to sources becomes crucial. This is the kind of information that separates desire from reality. Would the Cubs love to have Diaz? Absolutely. But will they pay the price? That’s where things get complicated. Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney at the Athletic, two of the most plugged in Cubs insiders out there, dropped an article on November 14th that pours significant cold water on this idea. According to them, while Hoya’s front office understands they can no longer live on one-year deals for elite relievers and will need to commit, that doesn’t mean they are willing to give Edwin Diaz what he is expected to command this winter. And what is that price? We’re hearing Diaz is seeking and will likely get a contract that surpasses nine figures. We are talking $100 million or more for a closer. That is rare territory and frankly it is not Jed Hoyer’s playground. The Cubs under Hoya are not known for paying top dollar on the free agent market especially at a position as volatile as reliever. The analysis here is that while the need is obvious, the financial risk is likely what’s scaring Hoya off. A $100 million contract for a pitcher who while incredible throws 65 70 innings a year is an investment that can hamstring your payroll flexibility for other areas like that starting pitcher we also desperately need. Chararma and Mooney make it clear that the Cubs should not be considered front runners or perhaps even serious players at that price point. This signals a strategy I’ve suspected for a while. Hoya would rather spend that $100 million on two or three very good bullpen arms rather than go all in on one elite closer. This means we are more likely to see the Cubs targeting that next tier of relievers, the Suarezes, the Egles, maybe even a Luke Weaver, looking for depth and value over the marquee name. It’s a defensible strategy, but it’s a frustrating one for us fans who want the star. So, here’s the bottom line. The top story today is that while Edwin Diaz is the dream scenario to fix our bullpen woes, the most reliable sources indicate the price tag likely 100 mile sees is well beyond what Jed Hoyer and the Cubs are willing to pay. The strategy appears to be hunting for value and depth rather than breaking the bank for the best closer on the market. Now I want to hear from you Northsiders. What do you think of this approach? Is Jed Hoyer right to avoid such a massive contract for a reliever regardless of how good he is? Or is this the exact safe mentality that keeps us from taking the next step and competing with the Dodgers and Braves? Leave your comments below. I want to read every opinion on this strategy. And if you haven’t yet, subscribe now. I bring these deep dive analyses and insider news every single day. You don’t want to miss it.
