Toronto Maple Leafs – Ep 297 – The Tip In Maple Leafs Podcast
[Music] [Music] You’re listening to the Tip In Maple Leafs podcast with your host Chad and D. [Music] Hey everybody, welcome to the Tip-in Maple Leafs podcast, episode number 297. I’m Chad. I’m Dale. How we doing? How we doing this Sunday afternoon, Chad? Um, you know, I’m kind of like, uh, everything just kind of feels the same. You know what I mean? Yep. I’m not mad. I’m not upset. No, it’s just this is just this is just the new life. Leafs lose, we do a podcast. Leafs lose, we do a podcast. This is just how it’s been going for two weeks now. Yeah. Well, it feels like actually eight weeks. Really? Middle of September we started doing it training camp. Here we are middle of No, like I mean it’s been the same since the puck dropped on the game one of the preseason. Yeah. Been the same every night. It’s been the same. Yeah. They had uh they had a few games that we thought they were turning it around, but for the most part it’s just been like it’s been bad, man. It’s been really bad this year. Yeah. Really bad. Where do we go? Where do where do you I like I talk about like I want to get into like you know I’ll probably I’ll probably title this on YouTube like I’ll lay off them a bit but not really. But like how do you fix this mess? That’s kind of where I’m going here with this episode. How do you fix this mess? Because that’s what this is. It’s a mess. And that’s putting it like politely. It’s a mess. But like we’ve said so much in the last our prior two our previous two podcasts. Like we’ve said so much. It’s hard to keep going through the same stuff. But yeah. Anyway, the lease they go into Chicago to start uh was that the first or second game of the road trip? First, right? Yeah. They were in Yeah. They were home uh LA on Thursday night and of course they lost 4-3. So, we last time we were here was after the Boston loss. Um, so they lose to LA at home. They go into Boston. They blow a third period lead or Chicago, sorry, Blackhawks shut out. They go into Chicago, blow 3-2 or blow a 2-1 lead. Um, end up losing 32. Should have been 3-1 in my opinion. I think the Knander that I think that was a high stick. So, I think it was honestly a 3-1 game, but whatever. It is what it is. Another loss. This finding new ways to win. Like did they look better? Yeah, a little bit. Wall. Like we can touch on all this stuff, whatever you want, but like the end of the day, they blew a lead and they [ __ ] lost to the Chicago Blackhawks. We’re not talking. I mean, I know every team is better. You can’t take anybody for granted, but these guys just like I wouldn’t say the Leafs like outworked them again. Like, do you know what I mean? No, it was it was even like the LA game. They lost 4-3 in overtime, but they weren’t even in that one. Oh, not even close. LA controlled it. Last night against the against the Blackhawks, shout out. It it was more of an even game. I felt they played their best second period maybe of the season. They actually had a decent start. There were some LOLs, but you lost the third period. You blew it in the third. Yep. Like, let’s put 60 minutes together here, boys. I don’t even know. I don’t even know what to say anymore. Like, and and I don’t like that loser mentality of people coming out being like, “Oh, you know, well, we deserve like we played good enough to win that game.” Yeah, but you didn’t. Well, who said that? Well, that’s just the tone I got after when they were interviewing the players and the coaches. Oh, I didn’t get that tone from Bub at all. Not from Bub, but from just like they did good things. Like they’re always saying that, “Oh, we did some good things. We, you know, it could have been different different outcome.” I mean, you know, they did hit a lot of posts and and there were a lot of ch like Cal could have had a hat-tick last night. Yeah, for sure. Like they there was lost. Yeah, but you lost. Like they played better at certain aspects of the game. Yes. Correct. 100%. But they lost. And now their fifth loss in a row. And like looking at the schedule here coming up this week, like you’ve got St. Louis coming in on Tuesday. They are playing as bad if not worse than the lease. Like terrible hockey. So yeah, bottom of the basement dwellers on Tuesday night, the basement cup. Um and then Columbus on on Thursday and and Montreal on Saturday. So look, like you can’t over Well, these guys can’t look overlook anything, but if they’re looking over St. Louis or over they can’t be that they’re No, not at this point. No, it’s almost a must win on Tuesday against the Blues. I am not confident in any way that they beat the St. Louis Blues. I I haven’t watched the Blues game yet, but I know that they’ve been not they’ve given up next to the Leafs. They’ve give they’re the only team to give up more goals. Okay, so this So here’s an easy one. You hit the over on on on Tuesday. I mean, we’ll get to DraftKings in a bit here, but like easy easy money, man. Like you take the lease loss and parlay that with a little over guaranteed guaranteed money every night. Guaranteed money every night. But uh but that St. Louis game all of a sudden becomes like it’s a huge game because like I can’t sit here right here on Sunday afternoon and tell you that the Leafs are going to beat St. Louis on Tuesday. I don’t know. Like I have no idea. Like they might not. I have no freaking idea. No, we have no like fans don’t have confidence in this team right now to beat anybody. I don’t think the team has confidence in themselves to beat anybody. So, their fifth straight loss. Riley was asked postgame last night by I don’t know who’s asking these questions, but someone asked him if this was like if he felt like this was like the all-time low that he’s had his time in Toronto. And he’s he’s been here a long time. Yeah. He said no. He’s like, “When I first got here, the worst it’s that it’s been.” But he’s but then he was re asked the same question but the reporter asked like within the last 10 years of like this core being together. Yeah. I think he kind of skirted around it. He’s he just was like he didn’t give a definitive answer. He’s just like yeah we understand like things are not good right now. Do you Okay. I was gonna get in to Riley. No. Yeah. I’ll save it till later. I’ll save it till later. Um, so like I said, fifth loss in a row standings, they’re second last in the Eastern Conference, period. The only team behind them in the East is the Buffalo Sabres. And I know a lot of people have been saying, well, you look at the teams at the top, like I think Boston is leading the Atlantic right now. So all of a sudden, we thought the Bruins were going to take take a dip. Well, 20 games in, they’re leading the Atlantic. So like, looks like not a dip. And I’ll tell you right now, watching that Chicago Toronto game last night, which was okay. It was a bit of an e, it wasn’t as hard to watch as most of these lease games have been, but I’ll tell you, it wasn’t super exciting. And I flipped over Bruins, that Bruins Montreal game was way more entertaining. Oh, yeah. Physical fights. They were engaged. Like the give a [ __ ] effort level in that Habs Bruins game was like kept me flipping back over to watch that game instead of the [ __ ] Leafs. Yeah. What does that tell you? On a Saturday night I’m flipping watching Boston Montreal instead of watching Toronto Chicago. Like I would never even think of doing that in the past ever. The product the product on the ice is absolutely terrible and blows my mind that they jack the ticket prices for this. For what? for this Leafs team. Oh, just you’re paying more money than ever before. They didn’t think they were going to be this. They didn’t think they were going to be this, right? Can they give everyone a refund? Can they Can they lower the prices? I think fans need to need to do that. Don’t you don’t you think the fans need to stop going to the games? We need to if this keeps up, you got to do something. You got to send a message. We can’t keep filling the building at league high prices. The fan base is just it’s too big, right? like it’s just too big. People come from out of town and like they’re or whatever. Like it’s just there’s 19,000 seats like they’re going to be filled. I don’t know. I’ve seen some empty seats on the broadcast. Like I it doesn’t look as packed as it usually is. I mean, obviously there’s a great crowd there. I don’t know if they’re full sellouts every night. I don’t know. But I’ll tell you what, though. Well, here’s what I do know. They lose in a not good fashion on Tuesday to the St. Louis Blues. We’re talking maybe waffles. We’re talking maybe jerseys. We’re talking for sure booze. I’m telling you, it’s right around the corner because a lot of people are not happy, man. Not happy with this effort. So, me included. We could see waffles, brother. We might see a jersey toss. Who knows? Who knows? We’ll see. I don’t even Where do you want to go? I don’t know where. Well, let’s go to So, fifth loss in a row standings. They are where they are in the standings. 20 game mark now. They played their 20th game last year. Let’s do a little injury carousel. We got Matthews dayto day was put on the IR. Remember last year dayto day became uh week to week to week. Yeah. So or did they I don’t even think he is day to day. Did they say dayto day or week or week to week with Matthew at least a week? Yeah. Did they say anything? This was this happened last year. Same thing. And then he was going then he was flying to Germany. Last year dayto day was week to week into a month. So if they say like he’s going to be out a week while do the math from last year he’s going to miss a month and a half, two months, we won’t see him before the new year. Easy. Well, would you be surprised? Nope. Like how could you be? Right. Uh stolars put on LTI. Don’t know what the hell this guy we just haven’t seen him since he left the after the first period uh in Boston. Or was it Boston? No, LA. LA. LA. And they said he was fine after that game. Breub said he was fine. That made me speculate. It was It wasn’t LA. It was Boston, right? Because it was a Boston game. He left after the first period. And I thought because Buru came out and said, “Yeah, he’s fine.” After the game, I thought, “Okay, maybe he just maybe they pulled him. He just didn’t want to finish.” Something like that. And now he’s on LTI. I know. It’s crazy. The hell’s going on? So, he’s out. At least Wall came back. And then all of a sudden, Carlos out with the little groin pull, lower body injury, something we don’t know. How does that guy end up getting hurt? He doesn’t engage. Doesn’t do anything. How does he end up pulling something like I don’t understand that. Um it was off the ice probably. Lton’s still out. Um I don’t know. So yeah, they’re banged up a little bit, but it’s not like those guys were [ __ ] doing anything anyway. They just weren’t. So, it’s, you know, does Matthews come back in a week or two weeks or a month? Who the [ __ ] knows? I’m sure he’s more concerned about playing in the Olympics right now than getting back dealing with this mess. But, uh, I don’t know, man. Like, I just feel like we could be in for a long ride, like a long bumpy ride here. Okay. But what what if it what if it does turn around? Like, wasn’t it last year around this time that they went into St. Lewis and they I think they lost, but then after that they kind of got things going and started turning it around. I mean, it’s 20 games and I’m not saying I think this is going to happen, but what if what if they do? Okay. Well, what if they just start to turn it around? What does turn it around look like for you? We might It’s not what it looks like for me. Like if they start winning games that they don’t deserve to be winning because I’m talking about winning games you do deserve to win. Okay. What if you’re watching it and you’re like, “That was a good game. They won. That was a good game. They won.” Okay, it’s going to take a long road for me to believe in this hockey team again. A long long road. Like I’m going to need to see it consistently like for quite a while. A lot of people pull like the the entire way they play has to be completely different for me to buy back in. Like I am so like I I’m I sold all my stock. I’m out. I’m done. Okay. But okay. So basically, and and you speak for a majority of the fan base. You don’t believe in this team. Even if they turn around and start winning, get into the playoffs, they’re not going to win anything. No, they’re not going to win anything. So what like what do you do? Do you look at the small picture and you say like I heard Freriedman last night on the broadcast talking about how he’s hearing Tree Living’s trying to make good oldfashioned hockey trades like no futures just roster for roster players to kind of you see that you see that a lot right nowadays you really see that a lot that’s going to be really difficult and again uh I forget who said it to him was like are you talking big time are you talking maybe like a kneelander and he’s like no no like what he’s hearing is bottom six I’m like Okay, great. So, we’re going to switch around the bottom six again. Yeah. At at what point do you think the team needs to take a look at the big picture and maybe do what Boston did last year and be like, “All right, let’s just write this season off.” Yeah. Try to acquire what we can back. Yep. Try again next year. Um I would say like I kind of said a couple podcast like you would do it now if you were the GM. No, I’ll I’ll give it like I’ll give it till Christmas. Like I’ll have another look for a month and a half here. And but what if they what if they start winning some games then? Do you is it like okay well let’s give them till January, let’s give them till February. At some point you got to pull the pin and be like all right like the new the new year is it for me. Like that’s where I would be like either they’ve showed me something or they’re just dogs. I think I think they’re dogs. I don’t think they pull out of this. I really like the only way I see to fix this is not a full rebuild necessarily. Kind of like what the Bruins did. Yeah. You mentioned Boston, like they kind of they kept some pieces. Look at them now. But they sold some pieces and got some things back. And like that’s where I’m at. Like I I want to get more into that. But a couple a couple things quickly here. Eastston Cowan comes up last night and he’s playing I think he was on the second line I want to say, but top power play unit and like at the end of the game he was on the ice when they for the sixth attacker. I think they should send him back down to the Marley. Okay. I don’t like him being around this because they the culture is so thick of losing and it’s just continuing. Like do you I don’t want the kid around that. I want like I know N has to be there. He just signed the big ticket. Like hopefully he’s an NHL. Hopefully he can like pull through it because he’s still going to be around when most of these guys are not anymore. But like you gota I saw a shot last night. They had Cowan and Cow and N played on the same line and they were both sitting on the bench beside each other looking at the iPad and I’m like there’s the future right there. These are the these are the these are my two horses. That’s it. They’re the only two for me right now up front. They’re the only two guys that I’m building around. I wouldn’t give a [ __ ] if any of the rest of them were gone. I wouldn’t care at all. But do you not think it might be not the best thing to have him up here right now? Like, does he need to be here? He’s not getting them out of this. No, he’s not getting him out of this. You’re right. Like, he’s not. He’s not going to be a savior. But I get why he’s here. Don’t you like Bub’s fighting for his life here. You need every like he’s got last year he wanted nothing to do with Nick Robertson. Any chance he could get, Nick Robertson was down in the lineup. Now he’s putting Nick Robertson up on the top line. He’s playing him in big minutes, and big moments. because and he’s doing the same with Cowan because he’s trying to win games. He’s trying to get some goals and win some games. I get that. I get that. What you’re talking about is another it’s another decision that you have to make. If you’re going to send Cowan down, then you’re sending the message that this team’s toxic and we’re getting like we’re going to make changes and we don’t want him around. But if you have him there, then you’re giving the message that you believe in the team and that he can be a part of turning this thing around. I get it. I just don’t like it. Like I get I know you don’t like it, but you can understand what they’re doing. You said you’re gonna give it till Christmas. Well, if you’re going to give it till Christmas, then you got to give it all. I just don’t want what’s wrong with them because I think rubbing off on them. Yeah, that’s what my biggest concern is. Like these guys aren’t going to win. So, I don’t want their loser [ __ ] stinkiness to rub off on guys that we might be able to eventually win with. Right. Yeah. So, I don’t know. We’ll see. Anyway, he’ll probably stick around. I like they’re probably not going to send him down, but we’ll we’ll see. Anyway, that’s just it’s a little concerning for me. Another thing before we kind of get more into like some talk about what they should do here um for Ru in the Kings game specifically, he’s gripping Knander on the bench. He has he has no problem going after Knander, right? Deserved. Like obviously deserved. Like Yeah, Knander was terrible. Oh god, brutal. But McMahon last night terrible. Like but like pick a guy really. Yeah. You can’t ring out Morgan Riley for his defensive play. Pick a other than Taris. Max Tommy. Tommy like Taris is working hard. He is doing it. Like he’s pulling. That might be the best contract in the league right now. 100%. He’s the only guy that looks like, okay, I’m in this. Like I want to be here. I want to try to win. Like he’s the only guy that looks interested remotely. He can’t do it alone. Obviously, William Knander looks like he just doesn’t give a flying [ __ ] And you know, like Buru’s given it to him. I wouldn’t even say given it to him really. That’s pretty soft. But he’s just And then after the game in today’s game, that’s given it to him. True. In the 1980s, that’s just a that’s just a quick little chat before you go out on the ice again. After that game, when Brewer was asked about what he was saying to Knander on the bench, he’s like, I thought he I just asked him if he was hurt because he looked like he was hurt out there, which was basically like, well, he must have been hurt cuz he wasn’t doing anything. Like I don’t know, man. But I just He’s always played like that. No, not not to come to Knander’s rescue because he deserved it, but other guys also deserve it. It’s not just It’s not just Willie. Like rip into Morgan. Like rip into Morgan. He’s I think Willy’s one of the guys that can take it. Like Kee used to do it. Keef used to do it to him. Um and now Buru’s do. He’s one of the guys who can kind of He let things They always say that, right? He lets things just slide. He obviously doesn’t get the he doesn’t get the message cuz he keeps doing it. Well, he’s always played that way. He’s never been a defensive powerhouse, but he’s always been lazy on the back check. He does he does the bare minimum. He takes the defenseman and guides him towards the boards, but if the defenseman turns on the jets or gets a little physical, well, Willie just doesn’t have that extra gear to get to get around that. No. So, I I don’t know. I think you’re right. I think it would send more of a message to yell at someone else. But what are you going to do? I when he yells at Matthews, Matthews just tunes him out. Oh, I know Matthews isn’t playing, but if you watch video of it, like if he says anything Matthews, Matthews is just like, I don’t need this. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Okay. Anyway, we’ll want to do DraftKings. We’ll come back and get into a few more things before we bounce out of here. Yeah. So, listen, hockeyy’s back, everyone. in the season is DraftKings Sportsbook. You just a nice little parlay. You take a lease loss and parlay that with hitting the over and almost hitting it every night. Almost hitting it every night. That’s what she said. So, almost. Okay. Morgan Riley, we were just talking about him. want to go down this road. I I I don’t want to go down this road, but I’m g I’m gonna I’m gonna go down it again here. I was thinking like Carlo like this is gonna lead me into the trades. I’ve been wanting to talk about the Carlo and the lot and trade for the last couple podcasts, but there’s just been so much so many other things to talk about. So, leading into talking about those trades, disasters, both of them. Riley always having to find someone to play with. Morgan Riley. Yep. I’m at the end of the road for Morgan Riley, man. End of the road for We need to find someone to play with Morgan Riley. We’ve talked about this before many times, but obviously it’s relevant again because here we are. Need to find someone to play with Riley. Need to find someone to play with Riley. Wrong. Wrongo. Just [ __ ] like, no, man. Like, how many Why can’t you Why can’t he be the defenseman? Why can’t he be the player that whoever he plays with he makes better? How about that? It should like when has he ever been that? No, but like how that’s just it. How good is he that like we need to always find someone and this has been going on for the entire time been here? You said it a few podcasts ago, man. It it it’s a square peg in a round hole. You’re barking at Knander to play defensive hockey. You’re talking about getting partners for Morgan Riley. It’s the same thing over and over and over again. Maybe maybe we need to change those guys instead of all the pieces around them all the time. What a concept. That’s I mean that’s just just spitballing here. You never get you never get out of that contract though. The Morgan Riley one. You’d have to eat you’d have to eat some of it. I think I think you could. I think I think you said so let’s get into some talks then because like I think you could Okay. the trades like obviously giving up the two f the two first and Gerbankin and uh Minton for Carlo and Lton Lton’s played two games Carlo you know I wouldn’t I wouldn’t mind if he just goes away somewhere like trade him trade him who I think they’re I think they’re trying to and and then you go with like the signings of Joshua Machelli Wah was not a signing like he was included in the in the Mitch deal. But like Joshua has been brutal. Machelli not a big fan. So Carlo like Lton we’ll see. I guess Lton you probably keep in the mix. Like he he plays hard but he not healthy. So whatever. But Carlo, Joshua, Machelli, those are the three guys the new guys. But beyond that, Doi Riley pick a guy other than the core four. I mean, we you were talking about like, well, what’s gonna make you buy back in and all that, and I’m basically saying, well, like nothing. So, where how do you fix this? How do you fix this mess? You start trading off guys like who I just named. That’s how you fix it in my opinion. You try to get as much back room as possible. If it’s roster players, great. But I would rather have picks and prospects. And you do a little bit of a shakeup here. And you bring up some guys from the Marlies. And that’s the only thing I can think of, Chad. Where where are you at? Or Yeah, I like that. Or you bring back picks and and roster players that are third and fourth line guys. Okay. And you you know like you but my thing about this and I said it last time is I don’t want Brad Tree living doing that. That’s a big concern. We have a major problem right now and the guy who got us into this mess I don’t think is the guy to get us out of this mess. Like he’s he’s the one that judged this team. He’s the one that looked at this and said, “This is what we need.” And he put this in. He put the coach in. He put this defense core together. Although there was a really good defense core last year. I know it’s crazy, right? And now it sucks. And but he went out, got Michelli, got Joshua, got Nick Wu on the signing trade. He did all this and now you’re going to be like, “Oh, this didn’t work. Can you fix it?” Okay. Like he understand like what if he trades Nick Robertson for another Joshua type player? I don’t know. You’re like No, I understand it. But did but is Keith P the guy you want hiring a new GM? No. Like what? They kind of Keith P doesn’t know anything about hockey. So then Tree Living is not going anywhere then. No. I said it when when they had that press conference, I said I had a bad feeling about him just handing the keys to Tree Living. like he just was like he’s the new like we don’t need to replace Shanahan he’s just going to run everything on the hockey operations. I was like that’s kind of a bad idea because he does he has a mediocre record as a general manager. He has some good seasons in Calgary. He had some [ __ ] seasons in Calgary. He’s had a few good trades. He’s had a lot of terrible trades. Yeah. A lot of bad signings. He’s he’s drafted. I think he’s drafted well personally. He’s a very Yeah. And he did that in Calgary, too. He drafted very well. Yeah. That Well, that’s what I meant. Great. So, let him run the draft. Yeah. No, I I I I’m I’m on like I’m on board with you. I want I would love to make the changes that you’re talking about. I would love to like get rid of Doy Joshua. I would love that. But I think if you’re going to do that, like if you’re going to do it right, then you you got to you got to remove the general manager. You gota you got have someone new. I’m on like I’m not against that. I just don’t see how you do it. And I do not or get him help. I do not Okay. Well, he’s like he is surrounded by like Shane Don’s there, but like whatever. That’s not He’s surrounded by Yesmen. He’s surrounded by guys who will do whatever he wants. Brandon Pridam’s still there. Like he’s But I don’t know how much he knows. He knows. You need a Shanahan replacement. Well, Shanahan [ __ ] blew it. Like I understand what you’re saying, but like if it wasn’t for Shanahan, maybe Tree could have done some other things if Shanny wasn’t there. But or or maybe Shanahan stopped some things that would have made the team really bad. Well, like that’s what I’m saying. Like like I don’t I’m not disappointed that Shann’s gone. I’m just saying and I No, it was time for Shanahan to go like like I guess I’m willing to give Tree another shot. But like I am concerned about if they go the route that we’re talking about here, like where they start unloading some guys and like they’re trusting Tree to be the guy to make these deals. Yeah. That’s concerning cuz like his track record is not great and like I don’t know what it is. Like I don’t know. It’s just it’s it’s the wrong mix. It’s the wrong group of guys. But is there is there any and it all and it scares the hell out of me if they were to fire Tree Living to like who the [ __ ] is Keith P going to like hire? Well, that’s why I was when that whole press conference happened, I was kind of disappointed that they didn’t replace Shanahan. Like he’s just like, “Yeah, we don’t need that position anymore.” I’m like that’s kind of an important position. The guy who’s the head of hockey operations who can distance himself from the general manager and the coaches. He’s someone that you know he’s the eyes in the sky that knows a lot about hockey. If there was another had they replaced Shanahan with with a really good hockey mind who wasn’t the guy that put tree living in place. If he was watching this right now, y do you not think the wheels would be spinning and he’d be like, “All right, this is a [ __ ] mess.” Yeah. I mean, but instead you’re looking to the guy who made the mess. You’re looking at Tree Living being like, “Well, you’re the president. Like, you run everything.” But I’m hoping I’m hoping Tree Living’s watching it right now and thinking the same thing. That’s what he is. But it’s his team. It’s like It’s like if you give birth, like if you have kids and they’re ugly. Well, you’re always going to think they’re kind of good-looking cuz they’re your kids. He’s doing that with this team. Yeah. I know he’s looking at this team being like, “Oh, well, you know, like we got Austin and and and this piece is good and this piece is good. We just need this and this and this.” And that’s the whole that’s the problem Brian Burke made. That’s the problem Dave Nonas made. That’s the problem they’ve been having for 25 years is you have these guys that love their team. And that’s what Shanahan did different when he came in as the president and hired Louarella. You had two people. You had someone who could block a stupid trade. Yeah. Block a stupid move. You’re right. You’re right. You’re right. Um anyway, that’s where we’re at, buddy. Cuz no, for sure. I I totally agree. And I just like I I do agree with all that. I just I don’t know what the right answer is. I don’t I I don’t love Tree Living staying to fix it kind of or or try to fix it. And I don’t also love P hiring someone new to do it and trusting that he’s going to hire the right guy either. But you look at the raps, raps did the same. P did the same thing. He killed fired Messiah, fired Shanny, and the raps replaced him. No, Raps are looking real good. Leafs are looking like they’re in going in the wrong direction. But anyway, good. So, just kind of final thing again, but the Raps the Raps have have a good general manager. Well, yeah, for sure. We Webster’s the same dude who’s worked under Messiah, so I think he can figure it out, but like they were both kind of like GM Anyway, whatever. Um, but just just to go out on kind of just more a little bit more on what we were talking about like selling off assets. So if it comes to that like yeah you can make a hockey trade like doi for somebody or Robertson for somebody or a package whatever you want to do but like selling off assets I don’t think you can I don’t think they will. Not yet anyway like during the season. We’ll see how this all goes if they miss the playoffs whatever. like uh Knander Matthews, that’s not going to happen mid-season for sure. Um not even convinced it’ll happen during the offseason, but I guess we all everything would have to be on the table if they don’t make the playoffs. But selling off assets, is there anybody on this team, anybody that you would not be willing to trade at this point? I I guess leave the top guys out because they’re not going to do that mid-season. Is there anybody that you’re like, “No, I wouldn’t deal him. I’m in in one. But is everyone else on the table for you? Like you would trade goalies? Goalies? Yep. I would trade goalies. Like Chicago or Chicago? Colorado swapped both their goalies. Like last year like you know you know Edmonton would have interest in in stolers. Great. But like what does Edmonton have that we need? I don’t know. I don’t like their prospects in Edmonton at all. So like find somebody else picks or Well, yeah. No, but you know what? I’m just say like that was just one example that came to my mind. Like if if you fall in love with if you’re watching this team play night after night and you’re thinking that you can’t there’s somebody you can’t part with. That that’s I mean that’s a loser mentality right there. There’s not Why can’t you Florida parted with stolers? I know they have Babroski, but like you can part with stoolars. You could part with Joseph Wall. Florida also parted with Spencer Knight. He’s a He’s a good [ __ ] goalie, too. He looked good last night for Chicago. But no, man. Part with these players, but it’s up to a general manager to figure out who to part and who not to part. And I don’t like having the guy doing it that’s doing it that everything in place. There’s not a forward that I wouldn’t trade outside of not like I know you can’t trade the big boys. Yeah, I although I would if I would get to a point where I would do that depending on how this year plays out, but like NY and that’s where you get actual things back if you were to do a William Knander trade. Yeah. You could really change the face of this team overnight. And I’m kind of hoping that like if they miss the playoffs that that is the direction they might end up going here. But I’ll tell you this, trading Joshua, what are you going to get back? No, I know. But no picks. Picks. Get some You’re gonna get like fourth round picks. Okay, but take it like just try and then replace him with replace replace him with somebody from the Marlies. Unless there’s another tree living out there that just loves to part with first round picks. I don’t know how many tree livingings there are out there. But um anyway, defenseman, there’s not one defenseman out of the 60. And I think Ecman Larson maybe been their best defenseman, but but if it’s not going well, get something for him. There’s not one defenseman back there that I wouldn’t trade. Not one. Like if they if if this year goes the way I think it goes and Morgan Riley, Austin Matthews, and William Knander are all on the team again next season. Look at Boston walked away from their captain for not very much. Like I know he had the say in where he went. It ended up being a first. Okay, but they did that. They got more for Carlo. Think about that. Think about that. I know. But they still made the move. Like they could have they they could have sat on it and been like, “Well, we’re not getting much for them, so we’re just going to keep them till the end of the season.” They made the move. Yeah. The Leafs could do that, but they never will. They the Leafs will never be the team leading the pack. We’re always going to point to other teams and be like, “They need to do what that team did. They need to do what that team did. Why can’t they be the team where other, you know, around the league, they’re like, “Man, look what Toronto’s doing.” Never. No. Anyway. All right. Let’s go. Absolutely the answer is selling off the new acquisitions for futures, picks whatever maybe throw in Domi and try to retool/ rebuild on the fly because anything would be an upgrade from this dumpster fire
Are the Jays back yet?
You win. Problem solved
The window is closed. It's just gonna take another 5 years for the organisation to accept it. There is no way to fix it other than to start again. You have no draft capital and nobody wants to come play with these sadsacks – so youre not trading your way out of the mess Dubas put you in, and the cupboards are too bare to expect any help to be coming internally. Theyre done. Blow it all up and start again.
Leafs new destination ROUTE 66 to nowhere
I need a full flush, I can't stand this group been out on the core for years. The thought of Reilly and Mathews playing out thier contracts here makes me want to puke. Radioactive team making me feel toxic.
To fix it the Key is to change the GM to do it either a rebuild or not , have zero trust with Tree. Besides his mediocre record in Calgary and crazy overpaid of two first round picks and the acquisition of a few rubbish in summer honestly from day one Tree looks stupid to a lot of us. The only goal is how to avoid BOSTON get a top 6 pick and draft a superstar otherwise the fan base will go absolutely crazy
You’re the deal with that Matthews and Nelander both nice big contracts Nelander eight years. Matthews only got a couple left no move clauses so they play hockey the way they want to and they don’t care what anybody else thinks.
very good take. i agree. cowan shouldnt be in this mess, but coach doing anything for a win.
You start fixing this mess by not trading every single 1st and 2nd round draft pick
TRELIVING OUT!
BOYCOT THE LEAFS.
CANCEL THE LEAFS.
STOP GOING.
STOP SPENDING
morgan must have something the organisation. never seen a player get away with such rubbish weak play.
dubas traded durzi and sandin away. both are better than reilly and both are cheaper.
nothing changes with this team until the core is GONE.
stolarz for hyman 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. god this team.
two guys blah blah blah in a bar. that's this podcast.
The team needs to make everyone defend by setting examples. You don't set examples by starting at the bottom, you start at the top. Don't backcheck, benched. Stand around like a statue waiting to blow the zone, benched. Blow the zone early, benched. Don't change on time… Benched. That is how to solve the problem. Next up, hitting. Everyone but the goalie needs three hits a game or they watch the next game from the press box. No willingness at all to do it though.
I cancelled my Sportsnet. Leafs not worth watching. Blow it up.
Here’s how you fix this: Matthews to Philly for Martone, Luchanko & Toronto’s 27 first round pick back. Knies to Boston for Lohrei and Toronto’s 26 first round pick back. Nylander to LA for Byfield & Clarke. Hope for Gavin McKenna and Landon Dupont.
Trade 34 and 88 for top prospects and 2 1sts. Trade Rielly at half price. Dump Carlo. Flip Stolarz. Tank for McKenna. Make JT captain again and let him retire a Leaf. Build around Knies, Cowan, McKenna, plus the prospects and picks from the 34 and 88 trades. By 2030 this team will be a true contender.
Wow… just under 20 games in, and you guys are ready to blow it up. Trades are really difficult to make now, outside of the deadline. The Leafs will not part with real assets like Knies, Cowan, and Danford. Matthews could be traded next summer, (and should be), but other than that, not much likely to happen. Team is total crap, but I'm not ready to tear it down. I;d like to see them bring up some of the Marlies, see what they can do. Some guys like Domi, Rielly, Carlo, Joshua, and Benoit need a reality check by spending a night in the press box.
You dont, you made your bed now you reap what you sow.
Gm kept making mistakes after mistakes and emptied out draft capital.
Suck it up and play with what you have
The Detroit Pistons two NBA-NHL seasons ago lost 28th straight games before narrowly beating the Raptors. Maybe the Leafs will equal or surpass that Pistons’ record before winning another game.
Imagine not including Mathews in with Knies and Cowan.. Year removed from 69. Buddy on the right doesn't deserve squat. I hate the leafs too.
The new york rangers will take willy off your hands for Gabe perrault and 2 first rounders
They’re better without Matthews. As a team better.
I flipped to the other game too.
