Adou Thiero Lakers Debut Was INSANE

Adue Theo made his NBA debut yesterday for the Lakers. He only played five minutes, but let me tell you, he was popping off the screen in my opinion. Immediately, we see his impact defensively. First on the basketball, guarding a point guard. Great job having the Bucks start their action way above the three-point line. He refuses to get screened as well. Eventually, they call the switch. And then later on, you see him helping out Luca, making sure that dude doesn’t get a free driving lane. And again, he forces a catch way above the three-point line. Bobby Portoris has no interest in testing the length of him and once again helping his teammate out a bit. And that results in a heavily contested midi fadeaway. I’m sure JJ Reic will live with this type of shot quality all day long. He just made the shot. So on offense, most likely other teams will put their worst defender on him because he’s not in the scouting report. For example, they got Cole Anthony on him. So Luca takes a step back and this is how you make them pay for that decision. Crash the glass as hard as possible. Create an extra possession for your team. And guess what? That results in a three-pointer. Now in the stats sheet, all he’s going to get is an offensive rebound. But really, those three points don’t happen without him. The next offensive possession, Luca has two on him. He finds Jackson Hayes with Cole Anthony on him. And guess who’s crashing the glass. They called a foul, but if they didn’t, our guy was right there to put it back up. That right there was all of his first half minutes. And I’m pretty sure JJ Reic was like, “Let’s throw him in there last two minutes, see what he can do.” And I think he passed the first test. He was active defensively, taking up space with his length and size, keeping guys in front of him, helping out when he had to, and then offensively just wreak havoc on the offensive glass. The next time we see him was in garbage time. Once again, guarding a forward and then switches onto a guard like it’s nothing. You have to give Mark Sears a ton of credit here. Former Alabama College star. He knows how to score the basketball. Creates a ton of separation. Initially, it was great defense staying in front, going for the swipe he just missed, but then the separation is created. He does still get a solid contest off as well. Don’t worry, he gets his revenge the next possession. switches on to him and completely walls him off, gets physical and makes him pass the rock. Eventually, he switches off of him. Bronnie ends up getting an offensive rebound, dishing to him, and it leads to a foul. I was excited to see how his form looked at the free throw line. He made both of them with ease. He looks super comfortable doing so, and I think the form looks pretty. Do you agree? Just a great little sequence to show off his versatility. He starts on a power forward, switches onto a guard, and then switches onto a center. Bronnie eventually gets the steal, and now you see his athletic ability, size, and length just take over. Obviously, the intensity on the court at the end of the game during garbage time, not too high. There’s not a ton of pressure. So, you got to take this type of success with a grain of salt. However, in the first half, those were real NBA minutes, and the game was still close. And I think the most impressive thing to me is at 21 years old in his first NBA game, he looked like he belonged. Like if no one knew who he was, you would guess, oh, he’s probably like a four or five year player out there. He didn’t look like a rookie or act like a rookie. And that’s extra impressive considering he’s coming off knee surgery. But right away, you can see even in limited minutes what they want out of him. They want him pressuring the basketball, guarding every single position on the basketball court, hustling nonstop, crashing every time there’s an offensive rebounding opportunity for him. And hopefully hopefully he can knock down that wideopen three every now and again. I came out of this game wanting more minutes. I want to see more more. Do you guys agree?

  1. 'In the stats he only gets a rebound but those 3 points don't happen without him.' Yeah, they also don't happen without the guy making the 3, so that one gets the points. Rebounds are important, that's why they are counted. As rebounds.

  2. The Lakers got another steal with this Adou. He couldn't be on a better team. Kind of reminds me of when Kobe was drafted by a veteran Lakers team which helped with his growth in the league. Adou has Lebron, Luka, Vando, Smart, and Rui that he can learn from. GO LAKERS ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

  3. Shooters posted up on the 3pt line, athletic slashing/dunking wings & centers, teams will have so much trouble guarding when Luka's running the point. The offensive potential when everyone's healthy is insane.

  4. His defensive intelligence is impressive. This kid wants to be great. He's ready to guard the point now. The Lakers have no one who can do that on the roster, especially at his size.

  5. Agree I think the biggest point is his athleticism that allows him to guard all positions and gives you a live body on the boards which is exactly the tonic the Lakers need especially against more athletic teams. If he can develop a stretch game even better if he knocks down the odd 3 here and there great but the plus is the athleticism we need more of that.

  6. I was impressed with his athleticism and lateral movement. He has tools to be a better defender than Vando and is more explosive going to the rim. If he can find a way to make 35% of his threes he will be a star role player.

  7. He was 6'6 200 lbs as a freshman at Kentucky, then grew to 6'8 over his last two years at Arkansas, and now weighs about 220-230 lbs. If the 3 ball develops I think he could become a Derrick Jones Jr. or Lu Dort type of player.

  8. there are so many great young players coming into the league. you see a lot of second units performing well. the stars and starters continue to be a lot of familiar names but they are becoming more of an old guard, perhaps in their last season, like most of the headlining roster of the Clippers.. the Thunder probably have the right idea- just get bodies on bodies of young players who can play D and present physical matchup challenges on offense.

  9. On Defense he doesn't " Over Help". Most NBA defenders under or over help and are out of position. Also slides his feet really well. Can trail off the pick, go over the top and still catch up to his man with a one or two quick steps. Offensive rebounds have his name all over it… while his defender is watching he already a couple steps towards the basket. Other young players like Knecht and Laravia are known for their offensiveshooting but they'll get better on defensive around Thiero….or loose playing time. Yup, look forward to seeing him get more playing time.
