Evan Mobley’s shot map so far this season

  1. those midrange shots will start to fall the more he takes them. plus the defense will collapse on him opening up passing lanes

  2. People are concerned about Mobleys offense this year but this chart is pretty telling.

He’s not shooting *worse*, his distribution is just very different.

Only 26% of his shots are coming at the rim, last year it was 41% and he’s still shooting 76% on those shots.

About 14% of his shots are coming from midrange. Last year it was about 5.5% and he’s shooting about equal (high 30s)

34% of his attempts are coming from three, last year that number was 25% and two years ago it was 11%

The drop off in free throw percentage is justifiably concerning but it’s a small sample size.

There’s a lot of experimenting going on with the offense now. Let’s see what happens when it’s time to lock in

  3. The thing that frustrates me about those midrange shots and his mid post shots is they don’t feel like bad shots. He’s not usually fading away and because of his length, he mostly seems to have decent separation from the defender. But he still misses so many of them that look makeable.

He just doesn’t have consistent touch at all and it doesn’t seem like he’s improved on it much in 4 years. It feels like he’s leaving a handful of points on the table every game. He needs to kidnap Jokic next summer and force him to teach him the art of having elite touch.

  4. I commented on here this past week how he rarely goes straight up when he’s at the 8-12 foot mark, even when he’s open and bet he was less than 50% from the field there. I hate being right sometimes

  5. No joke, his improvement at 3’s above the break is Jokic-Esque it’s going to open up so much more of his game, just as it did Jokic in yr 3 when he doubled his 3 pointers attempted

Specifically, I expect to see his floater game take off as defenders are made to guard the 3pt line (already not bad, he has a nice one handed push shot in the paint)

  6. Injuries really seem to have fucked what appeared to be a game plan of running the offense through Mobley this season. He’s been relegated back into that weird 3rd wheel role from 2 years ago at times where he’s expected to make his own offense when things break down, and that’s just not his game.
