Last game that we’re talking about is of course Thursday Night Football. Your Jets took an New England Patriots. 27-14 was the final score in this one. Top five graded players that we have for the Patriots linebacker Robert Spain with a 90.2 overall grade. Offensive guard Mike Weno with an 82.0. Offensive tackle Morgan Moses a 780. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs with a 775. Offensive guard Jared Wilson a 74.4. And then Drake May an 84.2 2. On the Jet side of things, defensive tackle Harrison Phillips a 77.9. Offensive tackle Armand Membu with a 778. Offensive tackle Olu Fashion with a 753. Safety Malai Moore a 692. And then offensive guard Joe Titman with a 7 a 67.8. Justin Fields in this game a 68.1. Um what was your stat told the story here Dom? Oh boy. Yeah. as a Jet fan all these years, man. You watch Drake May, especially in big spots, third and fourth down, and you wonder, you know what, it’s third and seven. Maybe we got him. Maybe we got a ray of hope and uh it just feels like all those years of playing against Tom Brady. It really does right now. Third, third and fourth down. Drake May 93.9 PFF grade. Seven of 11. Oh boy. Seven of 11, 68 yards, one big time throw. and just you watch him and for such a young guy only in his really his first full year starting in the league, right? The common cool in every situ, he came into this game just business. I mean, it it was just flatline, do what we have to do to get out of here with a win, especially in big third down situations. Um, it just he’s he’s on a different level right now. I mean, you really talk about the way he’s playing. if you don’t want to declare him whatever or what have you, but he’s playing on an elite level and in a game like this where you know some people would think about you’re coming off a big win against Tampa trap game you’re playing the Jets the Jets defense has been playing better lately and he’s just like yeah no we’re not messing around here and and in just any any spot where the Jets could have had any sort of hope at getting a crucial stop May was not having it on third and fourth down he makes right now he’s making it look easy yeah he’s great and and the Jets just they don’t have the passing game to compete in the league like right where we talked about with um with the Titans and how it just feels their just offense is not good enough. I mean, it’s just the way that the Jets passing game is. Um 8.2 average depth the target. Um just a 4.5 yards per attempt average and yet still with a lower average depth to target and a low yards per attempt average. 3.16 time to throw. I mean, Fields is still holding on the ball for a really long time, but he’s not holding on to the ball for a long time to look deep and throw deep and get a bunch of explosive pass plays. He’s just not getting there quick enough and we’re we’re just we’re just seeing that from them. Most impressive though, I’m gonna go with the Pats offensive line in this game. 84.1 team pass blocking grade. Um they had a 50.7 team pass blocking grade in 2024. Okay, so last year. This year it is all the way up to a 70.1 team pass blocking grade. They have four new offensive linemen this year. Technically five since Mike Onenu is playing a different position for them since he is at guard. Two of them are rookies. Two of them are free agent editions. Don’t tell me it’s not possible. This team had one of the worst offensive lines in football last year. They were bottom of the barrel. Run blocking, pass blocking, overall blocking. They were bottom three, if not the worst in the NFL at certain points of the year last year. And when we got to the end, they had I know they were bottom three in most pressures allowed in a bad way, of course. And what did they do this off seasonason? They got to work and they said, “Nope, not good enough.” Mike Vrabel got in the building. Elliot Wolf got to be the general manager with them and they said, “We are completely changing this offensive line.” That is priority number one. They have five again, it’s it’s four technically five new players in the offensive line since Michael Wenu is still there, but he’s playing a different position. And it’s night and day, completely different. There are teams that sometimes have one hole on the offensive line to fill and they go, “We didn’t have the money to spend. The draft board didn’t really fall the way we wanted it to.” And they sometimes let one or two spots completely derail. We’re seeing that this year. Some offensive line, some some offensive lines around the league, they’re letting one or two spots derail what is otherwise a decent offensive line. The Patriots said, “Nope, not having it.” All the dudes that were drafted before, get them out. Most of them, not all of them. Totally changed things up. The attitude is different, the coaching is different, the mentality is different, the belief is different, the confidence is different, the grades are different, the execution is different. It’s all different because they went into this season and said, “Nothing else matters if we don’t protect Drake May.” And they did it. It’s just a hats off to them. Really good job from the Patriots. And you look at Awenu as a guy of the last few years who’d been splitting time between guard and tackle now just gets to play one position. The craziest one might be right now Jared Wilson who was drafted or at least in theory at Georgia. He was a center. He never played left guard before. Now he plays guard and he just had his highest graded game this week. Right. Will Campbell’s basically you look at Will Campbell’s grades in the high 60s, low 70s. It’s like steady Eddie. It’s the same. He plays the same game every week, right? You got veterans on the right side. This is the entire idea is the idea going into it was the old saying around here, right? Creep back to average. Well, there’s a chance that if you creep back to average, maybe those guys gel together and they start playing really good football. This is a legit top 10 offensive line right now. Yeah. And it’s just, you know, Will Campbell’s going to be a star very soon and the rest of those guys on the right side, the veterans are just playing, they’re playing well. Even Garrett Bradberry at center who had struggled at times in Minnesota. Yep. Good enough. Y and you know what? They didn’t have enough good enough last year. You can live with what they have right now. So, you’re right. The offensive line is a huge reason for the success. Uh, most disappointing really quick for me was just AD Mitchell. He had an opportunity in this game. Six targets, one catch for 10 yards, 40.5 receiving grade, three drops. I mean, he can’t have three drops. Yeah. No, can’t have it. Yeah. My my guy is Robert Spelain. I mean, he’s just he’s been one of the best linebackers. Impressive. I said disappointing. Most impressive. Sorry. Yeah. Most most disappointing. I I don’t This game kind of just went the way I thought it would. Robert Spain, though, is my most impressive. Eight tackles, couple of pressures, a pass break up. He just flies all over the field for this team and he’s the leader of this defense right now. Last note on it, too. Um, reportedly Tyrod Taylor will start for the Jets this week uh against the Baltimore Ravens and that’s what they need. So, I mean, I don’t know what they need at this point, but it’s some if they want to try to throw to throw the football, that’s what they need because the forward pass, what is it? Uh, are they under 60? No, that’s before that’s the three of the previous four games. What did they end up with the passing total in this game? 120 somewhere in there. Just I mean there’s low and then there’s like a 116 and that’s their second highest in the last five games. Yeah. That’s they had three three of their previous four they were under 60. I mean this is this is the fun of what we get to watch here in in the green and white. says tone.

As someone who never sees the jets play, Membou stood out to me on some plays.
The New England Patriots have got to be the most improved team in the NFL this season, over last. Like you guys said, the O line is VASTLY improved. the Receivers are much better, and QB Drake Maye is on his feet after most plays, lately that is. And the DEFENSE is doing it's job to a greater degree, good ol' Robert Spillane, we Bob's gotta stick together, is leading the way there. And even Special Teams are much improved, kick and punt returns for TD's. So nice. Let's Go Pats!
I think most credit for the improved OL play has to go to their coaches: Doug Marrone, Jason Houghtaling, & Robert Kugler.
There is no way two rookies, both playing on the left side, would be that good without good coaching. Yes, they have talent, but that is an individual characteristic. An OL works as a single unit.
Garrett Bradbury playing better than he did in Minnesota? That is most likely due to coaching. The only other two possibilities is that he works better with the two guards on either side than he did in Minnesota, which since he's never played with them and one is a rookie, coaching would have to play a large role in that happening.
The other is scheme, which again is coaching.
There is no reason to think, under the current CBA restrictions on padded practices, that an OL can gel that quickly without good coaching.
In the before time, OL's jelled in one simple way: Repetition.
In years past, there were two a days in training camp, there were a lot more padded practices during the season where players hit each other. That helped the OL work as a unit.
That's not the case anymore.
As a long time Patriots fan, I know what a great OL coach can do. Dante Scarnecchia is arguably one of the best OL coaches in the history of the NFL, and so I can see the hidden hand of Doug Marrone et al in the present OL play.
IMHO, Doug Marrone et al are the unsung heroes of the present resurgence of the Patriots.
Doug Marrone is the unsung hero this year for the Pats for what heβs done with this O-Line
