The year after the war ended Bob pitching to batter Joe DiMaggio. April 30, 1946 Feller considered this game, his second career no-hitter, the biggest thrill of his baseball career.
I met Feller in either ‘06 or ‘07 at Chain of Lakes Park before an Indians-Yankees spring training game. He signed a ball for me. Such a nice guy.
What was his WAR?
Wild to think he made it to the big leagues at 17! 17!!!
Would’ve gotten 3000 Ks and 300 wins had it not been for WW2.
Also had 15 strikeouts on his first start at 17 years old and threw the only Opening Day No-Hitter.
Met Bob on two occasions and found him to be a true gentleman and easy to talk to. God bless him
Also raced his fastball against a motorcycle going ~85 mph and won, pitching on an asphalt road in a button up shirt, slacks, tie, and dress shoes on flat ground. The Heater From Van Meter!
Why is Bob Feller kicking his coach or manager in the face?
I read this and thought he led the league in war three straight seasons
More seriously than my other comment, I didn’t realize his career WHIP was above 1.25. Being below that, and above 110 ERA+ are my normal two starting points for HOF or not. Yes, could in part have been crappy D. I know Cleveland Stadium, like the Ocho Cinco in Oakland, had lots of in-play foul territory.
Feller was involved in three major battles that killed over 30,000 Japanese soldiers. He was discharged as a Chief Petty Officer with six campaign ribbons and eight battle stars. He was later made an honorary member of the Green Berets.
