The Celtics CAN’T Keep Getting Away with this…
The Boston Celtics are now 7-7 after winning back-to-back games and three out of four. And they still boast a top 10 offense and defense in the league in terms of defensive rating. Now, why is this important, you may ask? Well, because the longer that they stick around 500 and have a chance to make noise in the playoffs, that means that Jason Tatum still thinks that he’s coming back this year. Even though the Celtics don’t want him to, he’s going to do it one way or another. If there’s a chance to win in the playoffs, Jason Tatum will be there. Now, Joe Mazoula is not helping this either when it comes to the fact that they’re winning games because he is absolutely dicing up teams. Like right here, we’re going to get into the little stagger screen from Derrick White, but we’re going to set it up like we’re in Horns and then it’s going to look like we’re going to enter the post, fake DHO, and Derek White’s going to set a down screen into a zoom screen. Instead, Josh Mina is going to pop high and set the first screen. Then Kada is going to bring the DHO. It confuses the defense, confuses Nick Batum, and he gets a wideopen three. Then they’re going to run this stagger action at the top of the key that pretty much everybody else in the league has been running with Kada setting the first screen and then rolling and then Derrick White setting the second screen and popping. We’ve seen the Spurs run this. We’ve seen the Nuggets run this. We’ve seen the Pistons run this. And we’ve even seen the Thunder run this. And these are just a few teams over the past couple of weeks. Everybody in the league runs this action right here because it is deadly. As you can see, Brook Lopez has to go with Kada. Two defenders go to the ball. So now you’re got Derek White attacking a close out. A little jab step gets the defender flatfooted and then a pull-up jumper straight in his face. Then we’re going to look at horns again. And this time it’s going to be a little ball screen into a flare screen for Derek White except for the fact that Pton Pritchard just blows right by Chris Dunn. So this is what it looks like. It looks like White’s going to set the ball screen and then come off the flare. But instead, Pritchard just gets by Chris Dunn. Everybody else is spaced out. And it’s pretty much the easiest layup he’s going to get. Now, after a timeout, we’re going to have a little bit of a UCLA cut into a stagger screen on the backside. So, now Derek White’s going to have it. We’re going to get into a horns look with Peyton Pritchard set in the first screen. And then we’re coming off that flare again with Kada. But this time, instead of when White came off the screen, Pritchard’s going to come off the screen. and White’s just going to go score. So, they kind of flip-flopped it right there, but it worked. They got two wide open layups out of it. And then Kada right here. This is just a simple Spanish pick and roll action with Kada setting the first screen and then Brown setting the back screen here. Except Brown, he just gets out and they trap the ball screen. Kada’s rolling right to the rim. An easy bounce pass. One ball fake and he makes a shot at the rim. Good contest from Brook Lopez, too. Now, this was my favorite set that they ran and it’s just getting Jaylen Brown the ball in space. It’s very simple. It’s just a throw ahead into a ball screen, right? So, this little flare action kind of, but instead you’re now giving Derek or Jaylen Brown the dribble going downhill instead of catching fading away from the basket and he just knocks down a three ball. It’s that simple. And speaking of Jaylen Brown, the dude has been incredible so far this year. Death by the Midi is back. The playmaking is here as well. He finished with 33 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block last night against this Clippers team. Now, yes, he only shot 14 of 33 from the field, 107 from three. So, not the most efficient night from the field from him, but still 33 and 13 is 33 and 13. Just ask Kate Cunningham who’s going to go out there and take 46 shots and score 44 points. Right now, he’s proven he can do it without Jason Tatum because right now, this is Jaylen Brown’s team and he’s keeping them afloat even without a real bench. Like Baylor Sherman, Jordan Walsh, Luca Garza, those guys are all playing legit minutes. watch him come off this screen, get downhill against Zubots here. And no offense to those guys, but I just don’t think they’re quite ready for an NBA rotation yet. And speaking of the mid-range, he has been dominant. He’s averaging 27.4 points per game, 5.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and eight steals in 32 minutes, shooting 51% from the field, and 36% or 34% from three on six attempts, excuse me. Now, watch him come downhill again. is pretty much as contested as Zubots can contest this in drop coverage coming off the guards the screen and he’s still going to knock it down falling away like that is a ridiculously tough shot he’s still 29 so he’s still got a little bit of bounce in those legs finishing out in transition then the little stagger here going to get downhill and spin against Zubat’s finish in the rim and 2022 2023 was the best year of his career per 36 minutes he is blowing that out of the water three more points a game per 36 minutes this year than he has in the best year of his career and an extra assist. That’s how good Jaylen Brown has been. Watch him snake this screen right here. Get James Harden on his back. That’s part of his game that he’s really developed is learning how to play in the pick and roll and how to snake the pick and roll. Like right here, once again, he’s got James Harden completely behind him. Harden’s already a bad defender, but like what is he going to do in this situation when he is completely behind him? He’s not going to do anything. At the best, he’s going to foul him and Jaylen Brown’s going to get a couple free throws. Instead, he knocks down the mid-range right there. now working off this screen like we showed earlier, knocking down the three getting out in transition. It’s too easy for him in transition. Some of these buckets just look a little bit too easy. It’s like he’s playing his own game, right? And the defense is just non-existent like right there going straight to work. He’s shooting 56% from the mid-range this season. That is better than Kevin Durant and Shay Gilis Alexander and it leads the NBA in field goal percentage from the mid-range. He’s having a historic season from the MIDI. He’s bringing it back. As you can see here, 93% of the people that watch these videos are not subscribed to the channel. So, if that’s you, let’s go ahead and fix that. Then, let’s talk about Derrick White, who has been put into a much much bigger role than he ever has at any point in his career. Last night, he scored 22 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, two steals in 38 minutes while shooting seven of 17 from the field, four of eight from beyond the arc. So, it was a good night for Derek White, obviously, and it’s a guy that’s gotten off to a slow start so far this year. We talked about this said earlier, the passing has really improved for Derek White. As you can see, Zubat’s in drop coverage, makes him commit, and then drops it off. And then once again, makes Zubats commit. He makes his decision right here. As soon as he sees Garza getting past Bogdanovich, he makes his pass, makes his decision, and it’s an easy layup. His pick and roll usage last year was 22.8%. This year, it’s gone up almost 10%. And while that seems crazy, it’s really not crazy when you think about it. With guys like Drew Holiday, Tingis Pingis all leaving Jason Tatums out. He’s averaging 16 points a game, five and a half assists, four rebounds, shooting 36% from the field, and 31% from three. He’s also averaging 2.9 stocks per game, which is very impressive. But a part of his shooting splits going way down has been because of the pick and roll usage being way up. He’s being asked to initiate offense more than ever and his efficiency is suffering because he’s been a off-the-catch guy for the majority of his career, not the primary initiator like he is this year. As for Peyton Pritchard, he’s also had a huge uptick in usage. He dropped 30 last night, so I guess it’s working. Three rebounds, two assists in 33 minutes, shot 10 of 16 from the field, and finally got going from three. Eight of 16 from beyond the arc. The jumper is back. It was on last night, that’s for sure as he reigned in eight of them. One right there over Bogdanovich. Gets handed kind of a grenade here over Derrick Jones Jr. and then working off the pick and roll. Zubat is a bad pick and roll defender and he leaves him wide open for the three. Although that was probably on Bugdanovich and then sprinting out. That’s such a tough shot to hit. Sprinting straight out of the three-point line and fading away. Uh he’s averaging 16.4 points, five rebounds, four assists, and point8 steals. 45% shooting from the field, 32% from three. So, a little bit better than Derrick White, but again, like Derek White, he’s getting used to having so much more usage in this offense. And over his last seven games, he’s shooting 45% from three on eight and a half attempts. So, it looks like it is getting better for Peyton Pritchard. And it will get better for Derek White. I’m not worried about either one of these guys. It’s just a slow start with, you know, their newfound roles in this Celtics offense. Namias Kada has been very good. Been a monster on the boards. Is averaging about 9.3 points per game, eight rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.4 blocks. Not bad at all in 25 minutes. I think he’ll be a really good backup center for him next year, but I don’t know if he’s really going to be trusted to be the starting center on a team that’s competing for an NBA championship. Jordan Walsh has been all right. You see him here get out in the passing lanes, getting a steal, getting a dunk, and then right here in transition, crashing the glass, getting the put back. Luca Garcia has been solid as well. Now, with that being said, that’s going to be it for today’s video. If Tatum really comes back at the end of the season, that’d be crazy for Celtics fans. It’d be like the quickest Achilles recovery ever. Uh, but with that being said, make sure to like button, make sure to hit that subscribe button, and with that being said, thanks so much for watching today’s video.
