This report just threw a BIG wrench into the Spurs plans…
Things just took a crazy turn in San Antonio as Sham Sharan reveals the breaking news report about Victor Wemama. As his cap strain is worse than we thought and he will be missing significant time with De’Aran Fox finally getting back to his all-star ways last game. It leads to some interesting questions as to how Mitch Johnson will manage the Spurs rotation. And one name pops up as a guy who has a big opportunity. We have to dive into Victor Wanyyama’s injury update, how it affects the roster, how certain guys are going to have to step up, and a lot more coming up in this episode. But I want to start here with one guy who who stands to gain a little bit from this. And I don’t mean that in a in like a, oh, good thing when he’s injured. No, that’s not what I mean at all. But I mean that this guy’s going to get some chances because he showed up last game and I wanted to shout him out. And that is Jeremy Sohan, right? A lot of us really loved watching him in that last game versus Sacramento. thought he played a great game this year, only getting 16 minutes a game so far, 6.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists. But let’s be honest, anyone that’s watched the games, we know Jeremy So’s defense has been incredible. And there was a lot of questions as to why he didn’t play much versus Golden State. And I still don’t really know, but with the rotation being shortened a little bit, now we’re gonna go with a rotation that looks like what we did or what we went with against Sacramento. Now, there is some concern with Stfan Castle’s hips. So, I’m not even sure at this point if he’s going to be good to go for next game. As of the recording of this video, I haven’t seen much. Unless there’s something out there, please feel free to let me know. But right now, like, you know, if Scazzle’s out, you have Champi. But regardless, you’re going to have Luke Cornet at center. Barnes is going to continue starting at the four, Mr. 100%. But Jeremy Sohan, right? This is a guy that we’ve seen play the center in small ball lineups. And I think against certain matchups, it could very well work. And looking at the Spurs upcoming schedule, we play the Memphis Grizzlies. They have some big bodies like Jiren Jackson. Atlanta has some, but none of these teams until you really get to Denver have that true dominant big that will back you down in the post and score on your head. Right. Of course, Denver, they have a couple, right? They got Joic, they got Valenunis, they got their guys, but right now, this next little stretch could very well be an opportunity for Sohan to show out. And if we look at his last five games, it’s been pretty good. That six-minute stretch against Golden State was not so good. And look, he did have an 0 for five shooting night before this, but if you just look at the last five games, you can see eight points and then just one point the next game, but only took one shot. Then three points, three rebounds against Golden State in those just six minutes. And then five points with two assists and three rebounds, and then 11 points with five boards, two assists against Sacramento, four for five shooting. But what stands out the most to me with Jeremy Sohan is that the three-point shot actually looks like it’s going down a little bit. in his last five games, really just his last four, you can see he’s attempted six threes and he’s made four of them. He’s never going to be a high volume three-point shooting guy, but if he can get this right now, if he can knock down his threes, that’ll be so important for this team. And three-point shooting is going to be a big story for San Antonio going forward. And you can look at the three-point column there, right down the middle. There’s a lot of guys who have been shooting well. WBY 35% on five attempts a game. Now, the start of his season was lower volume. Since he started taking more, he started making more. But we’ll get into him in a minute. Fox already at 38% on six and a half attempts a game. I told you 49% for Harrison Barnes is bananas. Champenny even at 38%. Stefan Castle and Deon Vel could afford to get their percentages up. But Jeremy Sohan being right there at 50% is pretty good so far this year. So, how do you figure Jeremy Sohan’s role is going to step up? I’d love to hear from you cuz I know we all love us some good Jeremy Sohan play. But look, WBY, this is what we’re all here for, right? Victor Wimbeyama has a left calf strain. We knew this. We knew he had tightness yesterday and is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks. Now, that is pretty vague. The Spurs have tended to be pretty vague with their injury updates and I can’t necessarily blame them, but Victor Wmanyama has been off to such a hot start. And the one thing we’ve always said is, man, we just hope he stays healthy. What I will say is that the display from the San Antonio Spurs in a team effort versus the Sacramento Kings is something that I think we will really really have to play off of to get some more success with Wemi out because a few weeks is a long time and calf strains, no joke. Calf strains can lead to Achilles pain, Achilles strains and even worse Achilles, you know, I’m not going to say the word, but it’s not. The Spurs are going to be very cautious and that’s something that we’ve seen so far this year with Dylan Harper currently. I don’t know what’s up with the Cavs this year. The lower body, the hamstring for Fox, but when the Spurs have had injuries, even the cornet stuff, we have been really, really cautious and that is one thing that I like to see, right? So, being cautious, you can almost afford it with a few games here against I wouldn’t say bad opponents because again, you can never count any of these teams out. They all have their their pluses and minuses, though. It looks like John Morant will miss this game uh versus San Antonio. So, and he’s a guy who’s averaged 28-8 throughout his career against San Antonio. So that’s a that’s good that you know at least Jaw’s not going to be there. But Atlanta, they have something to prove right now. Their record’s better without Trey Young than with him over the last few years. We’ll see how that game goes. But Phoenix is a team that we know we can beat. They can get hot. They played us well. Whatever. Portland’s a nice young defensive team. Really, that Denver game is where things get interesting. But that Denver game is 11 days from today. So the question is whether a few weeks means 10 to 14 days, whether it means 14 to 21 days. Usually a few does mean three. So I’m assuming a three to four week timeline here for Victor Wanyama. But this next stretch of games is an opportunity for the Spurs to really show out and get some production from the guys that like that aren’t WBY. And look, WBY, he hasn’t quite looked himself this year. He hasn’t coalesed well with Fox. Something we brought up before is that they’ve had communication breakdowns and they’ve openly admitted that. But the thing is Victor Webinyama, he is still an incredible force defensively. What you’re seeing here are the onoff numbers. The top row is two years ago. Middle row was last year. Bottom row is this year. So that bottom row here, points per possession. 97. What does that represent? The orange, those numbers, it represents the percentile. WB is in the 97th percentile in onoff defense points per possession in the NBA. When he is on versus when he is off, other teams score minus 17 per points per 100 possessions. That is insane. Wendy’s difference, the impact he has when he’s on versus not on the floor for San Antonio is insane when it comes to other teams, not only points per 100 possessions, but also the other team’s effective field goal percentage. And he also helps their offensive uh hurts the other team’s offensive rebounding rate better last year in the 94th percentile, 73rd percentile this year. But you can see that defensive impact is always there and it’s going to be sorely missed. And now, while Luke Cornett has had an incredible season so far, averaging 10 points a game, 81% from the field, he’s going to be able to fill the role to some extent way better than our guys last year, whoever was filling in, whether it was Sandro or whether it was even Bassie or whether it was, I don’t know, Byombo later in the season. Cornet’s going to do a better job, especially when it comes to rim protection. So hopefully he can mitigate the damage, but ultimately Wemi is the favor for Deepo for a reason. He’s the best defensive player in the league. You’re going to have to really adjust your defense. And for a San Antonio team that has been so brutal at point of attack defense this year, we’ve allowed guys to blow by us. We haven’t really recovered well out onto shooters. Just look at Steph Curry’s two games versus us versus his last game. I don’t even think he scored 10 points and he scored what 11 the game before San Antonio and then dropped backto-back 40 bombs against us. That perimeter defense is going to matter a lot especially because Luke Cornett doesn’t have that same support system behind him. He has Kelly Oolen and Bismac Biombo who are fine. Not even really like Biombo’s minutes have not been good this year. Kelly Oolen has not been great defensively. So what we need to see is not only De’aran Fox to be that incredible scorer that we know he can be. His numbers have been good so far. 22 points per game, seven assists, four rebounds, 51% from the field, 38% from three. But we need him and Steph Castle to really lock in defensively. Castle’s been good so far. And look, even if he misses a bit of time, which again, the injury reports probably coming out soon after I record this, but not like he won’t miss an extended period of time hopefully. Again, we didn’t even really see the injury, so I’m not really sure what’s going on there. But right now, there is a big need for the rest of the Spurs to step up, right? We have some good depth on this team. That’s kind of that’s kind of what we were hoping for going into the season. If WMBBY had to miss some time, if Fox had to miss some time, Harper had to miss some time, Cornette had to miss some time. All these guys have missed time now, right? WBY already missed one game. He’s gonna miss another what, nine games? Eight, nine games, probably. Darren Fox already missed eight games this year. Dylan Harper, he’s already missed seven games this year. Luke Cornet has already missed seven games this year. And yet, the Spurs, we’re still kind of rolling. We still only have four losses. We’re still right there healthily. Healthily, is that a word? In the playoff picture. So despite these downsides, the Spurs have the ability to come back and really show what they did in Sacramento against some other teams. Just mitigate the damage until Wimby comes back. And I think this roster is better constructed now than it has been in the past few years to really help him out. So we’ll see where this goes. What do you think? What do you predict is going to happen for the Spurs with WBY out? Do you see rotation changes? Do you see some guys getting more minutes, less minutes? I’d love to hear from you. Update: According to a league source, it seems that Wemby will miss 2-3 weeks and that the Spurs are being extra cautious. That's a silver lining at least.
Bad news: Wemby now looking to be injury prone, although the DVT was not an "injury" but a condition. And if IF HE IS STILL GROWING, however, then developing foot-leg-blood problems is a bad sign so I would look to step up my title window and WIN NOW…that is, put together a trade package of Fox-Vassell and FRP for Giannis before Wemby is gone forever.
Kornet-Sochan-Bryant-Castle-Fox should be the starting lineup for tanking.
Olynyk-Barnes-Vassell-Johnson-Champagnie-Olynyk-Waters off the bench.
That, combined with the inept coaching of Johnson = Top Ten pick since we won't be able to swap picks with the Hawks.
Y'all are a joke. Sure, things would be great if the Spurs played the Kings all the time. smh
So why have you clowns completely forgotten about Carter Bryant? Y'all were so high on him after Summer League.
I don’t think it’s as serious as the haters want it to be. Spurs are being cautious that’s all.
i think the whole cautiousness started with the whole Kawahi injury conflict where he supposedly felt the staff was not taking his injury serious and what not.. so in a way as others are saying im glad they are being cautious.
Fire Mitch and get someone with more experience.
I think I saw on Friday game where Podz dove under him and hit his fucking calf. Wemby fell down and immediately grabbed his calf. It’s a strain but maybe it’s like torn partially or something.
Oh no we suck again😅
Good for the team to learn faster to play without him. And we'll still keep winning. 💪
Spurs know Wemby is a polarizing player, and the team wants to experiment with lineups and give other players minutes to increase chemistry. They'll win games without Wemby, but its important he get some rest and focus on training for a few weeks. I bet there is no injury at all its just an excuse to rest Wemby.
Castle confirmed out for tomorrow vs memphis. Wemby, Harper, and McLaughlin also out so Fox will be the only true pg available.
Get well fast wemby❤😊
What matters is the sustainability of performance. We don't know what some people have against Sochan. So far, he hasn't proven much, apart from a few good games, especially since he's been injured. Castle is another story. If he hadn't held the fort last season when the others gave up, the Spurs wouldn't have had 34 wins. This year, the team is solid, with players like Victor, Castle, Fox, Harper, Kornet, Keldon, Vassel, and Barnes on a good day. Carter Bryant needs to loosen up; he's playing tense. We need to let him go, even if he makes a few mistakes at first.
Why is everyone so insane about this. This is exact same injury that Ja Morant (a guard) just got. Its the same injury Harper has. Its like 6-7 games and he'll be back. The team is deep enough to keep playing well. This is an opportunity for growth. Next man up
I would love to see Sochan finally play like 30 minutes. Some spot minutes as a small center using his passing and 3 point shooting when wide open as a hub a bit. He should get minutes next to Kornet not just Olynyk
I hope the are able to continue to win without wemby
Go Carter 💥
Hopefully Dylan will be back soon, we need another back up big.
Just sucks that we can’t get all the power core healthy at the same time and playing together.
We need one more big
Always sad. I was concerned at the beginning of the season knowing that Vic did so much physical work during the summer while still growing to then start full speed for 12 games with too much to do on the floor for a single man. He is 7’6. He may need real load management in the future, play 4 out of 5 games and above all, he needs another teammate to lighten his load on the floor, Kornet isn’t enough. The Spurs need a great defender-offensive rebounder or they’ll crash along with Vic. Young and probable future all star Moussa Diabate from the Hornets, a Frenchman, is what the Spurs and Vic need. He is a force and the Spurs would immediately feel a big difference with him on the floor. The Spurs ask way too much of Vic right now. Unsustainable
Oh it's big and it will lead to bigger issues…just need him out 16 more games.
