Washington Wizards Partner with MedStar Health for Donate Life Night
Welcome to donate life night brought to you by MedStar Health. West Hall here with two of my friends who know a thing or two about donating life. Doctor, introduce yourself. I’m Alexander Gilbert. I’m a doctor at MedStar Health who does kidney transplants. And patient, introduce yourself. I’m Charlotte Nobles and I am in need of a kidney. So, help me out. What particularly specifically are you suffering from right now? Kidney failure. Okay. Okay. I um was started to feel really bad, like fatigued and I found out that my hemoglobin was really low and I was going to need a blood transfusion. My primary care doctor said, “You need to go to the emergency room like right away.” Um so I go to the emergency room and there they tell me that my hemoglobin was extremely low. Like they were surprised I walked in the um the office and then they also told me that before I could leave I would need to start dialysis. My kidneys have like totally failed. Wow. So, I couldn’t leave the hospital without um without first going on dialysis. Now, is the condition hereditary? I did find out that I have a gene called the APO1 gene. Um my brother had it too. He just recently had a transplant as well about a year ago. He has that gene and that’s what prompted me once I had to go on dialysis to get tested. Um how does someone help Charlotte? That that’s what I want to know. The first step is to reach out. Um contact us. You can specify if you have someone in mind to donate a kidney to, but you also don’t have to have any particular person in mind. You can be what we call a non-directed donor. Someone who says, “I want to do a good thing for people and I want to help out and I want to donate my kidney.” Donate Life Night. Couldn’t have put a better cap on myself.
