We Just Saw One of The Pettiest Things You’ll Ever See on an MLB Field

The St. Louis Cardinals have been eliminated for a little while now, going on an overall decent run relative to their expectations coming into the year. The Cubs, meanwhile, have already punched their ticket to the postseason, meaning there wasn’t a ton of pressure on either squad for today’s game. But that didn’t mean there wouldn’t be some controversy, as Cardinals manager Ali Marmal did something that has to be one of the most petty Bush League things I’ve ever seen. Shout out as well to Jackson Oros for emailing me about this play. Prior to the contest, Chicago had already been dealt some bad news when they announced that rookie Kade Horton, who had played a huge part in their pitching success, would be going on the 15-day IIL with a right rib fracture. This couldn’t have put them in the best mood, and they immediately took it out on Cardinal starter Michael McGrevy, who had to watch as Michael Bush launched a leadoff home run, his 33rd of the year, and what has been a very impressive campaign for the lefty. In the top of the next inning, Nicoer laid out to rob Jordan Walker of a knock, which would really be the only play of note besides a Bush double until the fourth when Nolan Aronado crushed a center cut fast out to left field, tying the game at one. The Regly Faithful wouldn’t have to wait long, however, for their team to come right back with Michael crushing his second home run of the game, an opposite field tank to left center field. Says Suzuki followed the next inning with a tank of his own to roughly the same spot, elongating their lead at the time to three. Back and forth we would go, when Walker launched a two-run long ball of his own that brought the Red Birds within one in the seventh. The Cubs offense wouldn’t stay down for long, though, as in the bottom of that very frame, BCH would answer with his fourth hit of the day. This one, an RBI triple to the right center field gap that got past a sliding Jordan, giving his team a little breathing room. And that room would grow even wider when PCA launched his second home run of the series in the following frame, a no doubter to right field that pushed the score to 7 to three. This brings us to the play I alluded to in the intro when, as the Cubs broadcast was discussing, how Bush had become the first player with a double, triple, and two home runs at Wrigley since Johnny M. Marmal signaled for Bush to take his base intentionally with a cycle on the line. Sure, there was a runner on third at the time with two outs, but in a 7 to3 game, this just left a sour taste in my mouth personally. Now, I’m not saying you should groove him a pitch or something, but to not even give him a chance to earn it. In fact, to not challenge your pitcher to be better than him, that’s just downright classless in my opinion and more than likely only done out of pettiness for a division rival. The Cubs would indeed end up taking this one by a final score of seven to three after Brad Keller struck out Nathan Church to end the ball game. But I’m pretty sure all anyone’s going to remember from this contest was the dominance of Bush and the smallalness of Marmal. All right, everybody. If you made it this far, I appreciate you watching. And if you did, consider checking out any of these other videos on your screen right now for other content just like this. 1. I've got a lot of people in here disagreeing with me, and I respect that. Baseball is only fun because it's able to be interpreted a ton of different ways, so I welcome a difference of opinion. I will say, I do want to explain my reasoning once more:

I get that people are viewing this as a "baseball move", one that was meant to help them win the game. But, in that vein, let me ask you, does context not matter? In a June 8th contest I would never make a video about this, because I would totally understand. If you guys can somehow find a way to comeback and win, it could be instrumental down the line. But in game 161, when you're playing for nothing, in a 4 run game in the 8th, I think it's classless to not even face the guy with history on the line.

If the score was even 6-4, or they were fighting for a ghost of a chance at a wild card berth, again, I would understand. But you already are staring down 90%+ odds to lose in that contest. Why wouldn't you say to your pitcher: "go get him, be better, don't let this SOB drop this on our head"? You could even see this in Michael's reaction as he reached first. Dude was flabbergasted because he didn't expect it. Downright confused.

Again, I respect everyone's opinion on this, and won't do something stupid like delete comments like I'll see some creators do, but I did want to express why I held this opinion. And, by the way, for the people claiming I'm a cubs fan or something, I'm not lol. I would've made this vid regardless of the team's involved; it's the principal that irritated me personally.

  2. Stating someone is petty or classless for doing their job when the game is still within reach, is just ridiculous. You state runner on third with 2 outs, Busch was 4/4 there is not a manager in history that is not walking him. You have basically made a baseless accusation and name called for no reason. Might want to rethink your approach to content.

  3. The amount of times that judge has been intentionally walked would infuriate most fans (especially those betting on him).

As a fan, sure, but i want my manager to coach for his team to win.

  4. When the narrator of this video said that the St. Louis manager was classless, it just shows that he was clueless. They’re playing baseball at a professional level. You required to give anyone on the opposing team anything.

  5. So MTC prefers arbitrary stats to actually playing the game, even when it's the opposing team that's supposed to award the opportunity to your favored player?

  6. I disagree with you 100%. The guy was pounding the hell out of the cardnials. Why not take his bat away? Why is this petty? You do whats best for YOUR team. I think all of you just like to cry. Its baseball.

  7. This is not even close to being the most pettiest play/decision. Now having said that, Marmol was hired by the cardinals to be that "Yes Man" that Jon Mozeliak wanted after he fired Mike Schildt (MLB Manager of the Year) because Schildt wasn't a "yes man". And ever since Schildt was gone, the cardinals have been a pathetic and the Padres are making the playoffs with Schildt as the manager. And I am a life long Cardinals fan but I am smart enough to see where the blame lies for the cardinals downfall

  8. good ol trashy Cardinals acting like they are god's gift to "playing the game the right way" and yet they do shit like this. lolol shuuuut theeee ffffuuuuukkkk upppp about your Cardinal Way ainnt nobody wanna hear that shit ever again!

  9. I’m a Cards fan, not a Marmol fan, but you coach every game to win it, you don’t quit because you’ve been eliminated. No concessions or softball tosses because milestones are in reach.

  10. Think of it this way: Marmol is managing for his job. He's only under contract for another year, and Chaim Bloom is taking over as POBO this week. No less than 3 ex-Cardinals have been heavily speculated as managerial candidates. 2 of them are surefire HOFers, and the third proved himself enough to earn NL MOTY. He can't afford to give up a game for free — even a meaningless game the last weekend of the season.

  11. What's wrong with young people? Of course he's going to walk Bush he's 3 for 3 with 2 HRs. There's nothing petty about it. Yeah Cubs fans want him to pitch to Bush but what young people need to understand in life is listen to the song – You can't always get what you want
When you don’t get what you want it's not petty

  12. Way overstating the "smallness of Marmol" and calling him "bush." Yes, Cubs and Cardinals are long time rivals.
Marmol "managing " to prevent the game from getting out of hand.
"You play the game to win!" It goes for all sports. Apparently Bush has a history of hitting STL well. Four hits 2 HRs, double and triple in this game (had not been done in Wrigley since Johnny Mize in 19 thirty-something? that sounds historic.)
anyways, a perfect game can be broken by a bunt base hit if team is down 2-0 or less. Simple. At the least the team is attempting to bring the tying run to plate/bat. Also, to "the equivalency" comments in general: 24 Perfect games in MLB history. 350 cycles. not quite the same.

  13. The amount of people saying that the game didn’t matter so the cardinals should have pitched to Busch is wild. Rivalry games are the best games in baseball. Would you want your rival making history against you? No, and that’s the reason rivalries are so great to watch. It’s the right baseball move from the manager and the best way to still have a chance to beat your rival one more time.

  14. This is the MLB man. If a little league coach did this then sure maybe you could call this petty. Professional baseball is not a charity case.

  15. I hate sounding like a grumpy old guy but I'm turning 52 this year, so I'm a bit older, and I've been a baseball fan since the Yankees won in back in 1977/78. And back in that day, this whole denial of hitting for the cycle, would've been a bigger deal. But today? Not so much. A lot of stuff goes on today, that NEVER would've occurred back then. There are times when a pitcher will have a shutout through 7 or even 8 innings, and the manager still takes him out of the game. That JUST happened the other night when the Yankees were winning 4 – 0, and their starter was sill throwing heat. Yet without any hesitation, they pulled him out after eight shutout innings, no walks and 12 strikeouts!! Just three more outs from a complete game shutout, and he gets yanked?!?! Unreal. I don't like it, and I don't like the idea of denying a guy the chance for a cycle. But unfortunately this is the game now. Everything in baseball is different these days. Everything changes. It's inevitable. It feels more cold and lifeless with everyone's statistics snd analytics and all that bullsh*t. You gotta be a master of advanced calculus to follow the game. Baseball is now in the hands of the next generation. And I can either continue watching it and accept all the new ideas/changes/attitudes/technology, or stop watching it altogether and become a grumpy old guy who shouts at the kids to "GET OFF MY LAWN!!". I love the game at it's core, so I'll keep watching it and just grin and bare it, and just hope that the next time the Cards and Cubs meet, someone will get beamed and then justice will prevail!

  16. Person that made this video simply does not understand baseball. By the way, at that point the Cardinals had not been officially eliminated from playoff contention that long.

  17. Its no more bush league than the cubs walking mcgwire all the time he sosa were in the race to beat maris s home run record.and i think it was a good move willingly letting your team be humiliated is pretty low.couldn t have happened to a nicer guy.fuck bush and the cubs.

  18. I agree, Baseball's all about making sure somebody else get stats. It's not about trying to win the game. Is this a joke? They were down by four runs, you do what you need to do to win

  19. This is our fucking rival. Classless?? It was both the right baseball move AND you do whatever you can to not let your RIVAL TEAM get a milestone against you. Screw that. This is what rivalry is all about… lame as fuck by you, dude.
