[Jeff Passan] “The Mets are mulling the opportunity to sign (BOTH) Díaz and Williams to head up a bullpen in need of a total restructuring.” …”Coming off the worst season of his career with the Yankees, but his peripheral numbers were excellent and his stuff still graded out well-above-average”

  1. Sure, why not. I feel like every reliever is a roll of the dice. He could be the best pitcher in baseball or he could be Mets Helsley. Sign as many guys with upside as you can and then pray?

  2. This would be a very good example of “If you can’t beat them, then join them.”

He and Pete should hug it out on the field while rosters are announced on opening day.

  3. I mean.. keep Diaz & sign whatever relievers.. the rest of the bullpen is volume & trial & error.. if the FO, Coaches & Scouts want Williams why not; their call

  4. Not saying no, but I do worry about a guy who had his worst season while playing in New York and failed in probably the biggest spot of his. Career against Pete Alonso. Just saying it’s concerns me a bit, but his 5 year numbers say he would likely be pretty good.

  5. “it’s ok, Pete Alonso can’t hurt you anymore.”

*Pete makes critical fielding error to blow the game with Williams on the mound*

    “Son-of-a…”

  6. Why not if the price is right? Retaining Diaz is the most important thing. He’s really become one of the faces of the franchise in his time here.

  7. Asking a closer to take a non-closer role? Hard pass. Seen that fail too many times. Rather prioritize resigning rogers.

  8. If we sign Williams then we need to re-sign Pete so Williams can’t give up a big home run to him in the playoffs.

  9. I’m all for it. I would even give Helsley a second chance. Just, please, no more Stanek!

  10. I wanted the Mets to sign Devin last season. A Williams 8th and Diaz 9th is going to be tough to beat.

  11. I know this is a hot take around here but I want Helsley back. I get it, he pitched a few really terrible innings and bumped his entire career ERA up something like 15%. But that’s just what happens if a setup or closer hiccups. It was still only a few innings in reality, and then he figured his shit back out, and then he was unstoppable.

We know he was tipping and/or had another temp mechanical issue. We also know the team atmosphere sucked AND they were depending on him extra. So I don’t think the first streak is the image to keep of him. If you think Williams is worth betting on, so is Helsley.

In fact Helsley takes priority because we need stability and morale. Go for Diaz priority 1, then both Helsley and Rogers, then Williams if one of them doesn’t work out. Or all four if we’re going for broke.
