[Koshan] Treliving: “The reality in the business is you’re not trading your way out of problems.”
November 18, 2025
Bold words coming from the guy who dealt whatever picks and prospects were left for depth players and Carlo since he got here. Woof.

You traded your way into problems.
People were praising his moves in the off season. Too bad they don’t seem to be working out.
Anyone else feel like fans are just on this bizarre kind of hilarious water boat strolling through a haunted river at an amusement park and each new room is just animatronics of different parts of the team crumbling and playing a scripted speech? One of the weirdest seasons and it’s still November.
Technically you COULD trade away the problems
He tried to ship marner, people are down are Carlo but he was great last year. I mean does it suck that minten scored in us sure, but is really that valuable I don’t think so. We’ll wait to see what the picks lead to.
Thank god we kept all of our draft picks then.
Well considering we have barely any 1st or 2nd round picks going forward. The results are in… that was a lie
Why not?
His whole job is roster construction and he says he make that better.
The leafs have no picks so they can’t draft out of this, and he says trading doesn’t work. Is the move to sign more 30+ old slow players for toughness?
Now your not but this isn’t true.
If we traded Marner 2 years ago when we had our window that could have helped solve problems
If we had assets from Marner we could have flipped that for Rantanen who wanted to come here. That would have solved problems.
Yes when you have no assets and multiple holes to fill trading won’t get you much.
We’re tied for **LAST** in the Eastern Conference. He’s definitely going to make both coaching and roster changes, but by the time they’ve figured it out, it will be way too late. Either he makes tiny changes that don’t meaningfully impact the team enough to push back through the ladder, or he’ll make too many changes and the team won’t be able to recalibrate in time to make the playoffs.
The problem is structural, from owners who are fine with the team sucking since they own EVERY Major League team in Toronto and the Canadian broadcast rights for watching other NHL teams. It doesn’t matter how many fans leave for other sports or teams, as long as the arena is sold out every night and the Sportsnet subscribers keep buying.
*”The reality in the business is you’re not trading your way out of problems.”* part of a longer sentence:
“The reality in the business is you’re not trading your way out of problems…… when you have already traded away most of your assets. “
This is silly. All the Leafs have to do is trade Treliving to another team bound for the playoffs, then at the deadline, trade all of our slow-moving, “experienced” vets as rental players to his new team, and load up on draft picks.
The reality is the leafs hate their first round picks so they trade them
All you really need to do is look at the mess he left in Calgary…….he is part of the “old boys club “ and will have a job somewhere until he wants to retire…..
Not when you traded solutions to make these problems to begin with…
With how we’ve been playing, he’s absolutely right.
I mean, we can’t trade the entire roster. If we make a couple of moves, that doesn’t change how the rest of the team is playing.
I can get behind the thought that maybe this iteration of the team may never win a cup. I get it. Sundin era lasted until he was 35 years old. Gilmour was 34 years before his era was done. Most of our core guys are still in their 20’s. We are not at the rebuild stage yet. We will get there. Maybe Matthews decides to leave after his current contract is up and then we find ourselves rebuilding at that point. Until then, we are what we are. We figure out a way to play better, or we struggle this year.
Can’t free agent sign yourself out of problems either
Doesn’t sound as good as trade, but free agent signings have all but dried up.
Leafs need to outspend the rest of the league by 10x on scouting and development. Need full time pro scouts everywhere. Get kids at 16 in Euro to commit to the Leafs.
What he means *he* can’t, because the cupboards are empty and no one has enough value to improve the team by subtraction
It’s true, you can’t trade management.
This conversation would never happen if the team juat played better. I feel like many people are trying to point at different things without acknowledging the fact that it’s thr players on the ice that aren’t winning the games.
nah but you traded your way into problems
Gaslighting fans now? You did this!
Edit: he’s a liar or an idiot. Either way, comments like this means he shouldn’t be gm.
The turning point was when Shanahan “fired” Dubas for wanting full autonomy, and with that he would have dealt Marner before the NMC kicked in, and actually got something worthwhile for him. Instead, Shanny doubled down, told his new hire (who I thought was terrible) he couldn’t touch the core.
There were two times to trade Marner (Or any of the current core), and that was after the Montreal series, or right when Marners NMC clause kicked in.
The current mess is Trelivings for sure, but the Marner problem was Shanahan through and through. Dubas knew what had to be done.
I still think we should have moved on from Marner. Dude was just awful late in playoff series
Isn’t that actually what Florida did? Or was it Calgary that initiated that?
WWE partnership already starting to take hold… ” in this businessuhhh…”
FLA had no problem trading their way out of problems when they fleeced this exact guy
lol how many times has a leafs GM had this presser and said the same thing.
We deserve better than this organization and the muppets that have run it for the last 20 years.
No clue why we hired this dude after watching his handiwork in Calgary
that’s cause your problem won’t let himself be traded.
A nothing burger by Tre.
And once again our so called “tough” media refuses to ask tough questions. How about asking why this team never controls play and has not consistently controlled play since Berube was hired? Why are they one of the slowest teams in the league? Why do they dump but not chase? Why doesn’t the coach you full support make any meaningful adjustments?
Our media is only “tough” when it comes to digging into the personal lives of the players. But when it comes to asking the hard questions about the performance on the ice, they lay down as softly as the team they cover.
Isn’t it literally his job to trade players to fix the teams problems?
Traded yourself into a hole though, that’s for sure
Giving up 2 firsts, a fourth, Minten and Grebenkin for a 4th liner and a 4-5 Defenceman turns out is not the solution
Lol we’re so cooked
Why can’t you trade outta a problem? Figure it out
I love all GMs in this league.
You can’t build a team through free agency
It’s luck if you win a draft lottery
You can’t win trades.
That’s basically your whole job.
The reality is that they rushed into hiring Treliving. Shanny was low on options so he settled instead of waiting. If you look at the track record, you see what happened with the Flames under Tre’s watch and it’s not far off here. We are one of the oldest and slowest teams in the NHL and it is showing.
Tre did what he did in Calgary without acknowledging that the NHL has evolved from his time there. Benoit is our youngest defenceman out of our top six. Just think about that… With no first in the next two years, get ready for the pain because we’re just getting started guys.
The laughton trade is a fireable offence, almost as bad as the foligno. The carlo trade was okay but honestly the assets would have been better served trading for a better defenceman. Obviously that player wasnt out there at last year’s deadline but brad did not have to make trades for the sake of as well.
The problem with firing Treliving is the guy who is responsible to find his replacement is a non-hockey guy.
How the hell can you trust a non-hockey guy to find the right GM for this team?
Remember the Burke and Ferguson years of not making the playoffs? Well,a non-hockey guy Richard Peddie was the one that hired them. That’s what we might be looking at here in the future!
