Pirates Interested In Kyle Schwarber, Showed Interest In Josh Naylor

  1. Mostly just a recap of Passan’s reporting, but some additional notes/bits of interest:

    >But, if Schwarber and Naylor are on the radar, players like Cody Bellinger, Pete Alonso, Eugenio Suarez, Kazuma Okamoto, and any number of other available bats could now conceivably be within Pittsburgh’s spending range.

    ……….

    >As for the Buccos’ more seasoned pitchers, the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported today that Johan Oviedo is drawing trade interest, and Mitch Keller has been mentioned in trade rumors for months.

Edit: If anyone has an Athletic subscription and wants to provide more context on the Oviedo rumor, it’d be appreciated.

  2. Propaganda to make it look like they are trying or legit in this group’s opinion? “Interest” can mean anything… half the league is interested in these names.

  3. If the Pirates are going to spend, now is the time to do it. You know you have a generational arm in Skenes. You have a fairly sold starting rotation and our bullpen isn’t awful. This is the time to get a couple bats.

In my fantasy land, all it takes for the Pirates to become habitual spenders is some consistent winning

  4. I am also interested in signing Kyle Schwarber. I eagerly await his response to my 2-year, $86.25 offer.

  5. If we can afford them so can anyone else. If they have worth, we cannot afford them. Our entire business model is pre-arbitration and post-career players.

  6. Of course they “showed interest”. Then when their agents tell the pirates their ballpark number the pirates hang up because Bob only wants to spend 2M this offseason

  7. Maybe he’ll sign at a “it’d be cool to hit a bunch of dingers into the Allegheny” discount.

  8. I have 0 confidence in this organization.

Either sign quality bats or shut up. I dont want to hear that you were interested. Put up or shut up.

  9. The Pirates are trying that deferred money trick the Dodgers use. We’d be paying Schwarber for 40 years.

  10. Color me extremely skeptical until I see some results. Just by saying you have interest, doesn’t do the job. IKF said he wanted to win a batting title and I’ve never seen someone less qualified lol. Hell, I want to be a billionaire and take Sydney Sweeney on vacation with me! Maybe by saying it itll make it real??

I’ll wait, patiently, and not go for the (more than likely) ride fans are constantly on with this organization.

  11. None of this means dick.

Once there’s ink to paper and physicals passed, THEN that is news.

The MLB has the WORST off season news arc od any sport.

  12. Setting aside all the justified cynicism about how cheap the Pirates are, I just don’t think the Phillies are going to let him leave.

If Bob truly has freed up the checkbook to that extent, Alonso is probably the more realistic target. Not to mention that Schwarber has a QO and Alonso does not; the Pirates would lose their third-highest pick in the 2026 draft for signing Schwarber. Absolutely not something that should stop you from adding a guy of that caliber, but I think for a combination of reasons, if you feel like you might have a shot with both of them you go all-in on Alonso.

  13. Lmfao we all know what will happen:

    Pirates sign 2 of bader/mullins/yaz
Pirates sign Paul deJong to hold SS over til Konnor griffin gets up here
Pirates get 1 of Josh bell/Justin Turner/jesse winker to dh as the vet/culture guy.

Boom: $30 mil spent this year and they’d STILL be under $100 million

  14. This is warm & fuzzy to read but I can’t help wondering if this is to give Nutting something to point to if they get grilled for not spending during the upcoming CBA lockout.

  15. From their signings in the NH era – Barmes, Martin, Freeze – my guess is their market is around 2/$25 million. 3 years would be a pretty big change, while four years probably causes their risk analysis tool to self-destruct.

  16. They may be getting a lot of heat from Skenes behind the scenes to make the team better. The Pirates haven’t had generational talent like him since Bonds. When the best pitcher in baseball wants something done, you take it seriously.

  17. Sure they are.

    Pirates:
Kyle do you like baseball and can you hit for power.

    Kyle:
    Yes

Pirates: How much would it take?

    Kyle:
    75 Mill/ 2yrs

    Pirates:
Kyle as you know the government has stopped producing Penny’s and we don’t have anything left to offer. Would you accept some pocket lint and a dog chewed up Kent Tekulve signed ball.

    Kyle:
    No

    Pirates:
    That’s blasphemy, you’re over priced.
