Arizona Cardinals’ Jonathan Gannon on hot seat entering Week 12 | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

The the Cardinals had five straight losses by a combined 13 points, maybe 14. It was in the low teens. The last two weeks, they have been blown out. 44 to22 and 41-22 after they beat the Cowboys in that Monday night game a couple of weeks ago. We felt like they’re turning the corner. It’s been bad the past couple of weeks. And I did a a a broad look on Sunday morning at all the jobs where it just makes sense to pay attention and it always makes me uncomfortable because we’re talking about livelihoods and families and there’s a domino effect. The staff is fired like but the other side of it is it happens every year. Six, seven, eight coaches and if we’re not watching now I don’t think we’re doing our job. So, there were like 15 different teams where we just need to see how the rest of this season goes and it can go in a way that can cause the coach to go away. And with the Cardinals losing badly to the 49ers at home on Sunday, Jonathan Ganon, the the talk has begun. The Arizona Republic had a column raising the question of whether or not owner Michael Bidwill is going to move on from Jonathan Ganon. Here’s Ganon yesterday because inevitably it came up at his press conference. Here’s what he had to say about the possibility that he’s currently on the hot seat. Yeah, not a controllable for me. Um, I didn’t hire myself. I’m not going to fire myself. So, um, seriously, no, I know it comes up. That’s the business we’re in. If you don’t want to be in that business, we laugh, we joke, go work somewhere else. Um, I’m going to control the controllables for myself. You know, I come to work and do the best job that I can and try to get our team in position to win a game. But you know, it’s not a joke. It’s a reality. It’s Hyman Roth to Michael Corleone and Godfather 2. This is the business we’ve chosen. And every head coach who is ever hired by an NFL team is assuming a very high risk that at some point he will be fired. Very rarely does a coach walk away on his own terms. And sometimes when the coach does, that’s just window dressing for what’s really going on behind the scenes. Bill Bich got fired. I mean, the guy that won six Super Bowls for New England eventually got fired. If you hang around long enough, you are going to get fired. The question is, is it going to come early? Is it going to come late? And the Cardinals have never had a head coach longer than six years. So, Jonathan Ganon’s in year. Think about it. They’ve been around over a hundred years, and they’ve never had a head coach for longer than six years. This is year three. He may not get year four the way things are going, Devin. Yeah. And it’s it’s it’s unfortunate. I really like John Ganon. his first year down. I went and I spoke to their rookies about being a rookie, about social justice things. And he came downstairs and he pulled me and he said, “Come come talk to me.” We went into his office for about an hour, talk about my time in New England, some of the core principles we had. Um, and I’ve always I’ve always thought highly of him. My brother was with him in Tennessee when he was quality control guy in Tennessee. and he talked about how he was just a hard worker, a good dude, and how cool it was to see him go through that process to now becoming a head coach. And listen, we talk about it all the time. This league and being a head coach comes down to who your quarterback is. And the truth for John Ganon is it came in with Kyler Murray. None of us know how much he actually loved Kyler Murray as his quarterback. He had to just take that. They’ve felt like they’ve moved on past Kyler Murray. They’ve gone with Jacobe Brassette who set a a record for most completions in a game with 48 completions last week. They just happen to get blown out. So, they still haven’t had a chance to pick their guy. But like the NFL in this business, they don’t care about that. It’s how long have you been somewhere and have we seen process and progress towards moving forward and becoming a good football team? And after they beat the Cowboys and Jacob Basset had a solid game and Kyler Murray got shifted over to the injured reserve list, it felt like what was going to happen is end of the season, Murray moves on and Jonathan Ganon, NGM, Monty Austin Ford get an opportunity for the first time to get their own quarterback because they inherited not only the draft pick, they inherited the second contract. So they’ve been stuck. The question is, will Michael Bidwell give Jonathan Ganon an opportunity to have that fourth year? Look, here’s here’s the bottom line, and this is the challenge that every rising coordinator must wrestle with. When the window opens, you don’t know how long it’s going to stay open. Okay, it opened for Jonathan Ganon because he was the defensive coordinator of an Eagles team that made it to the Super Bowl. But you can’t go through the wrong window. And you got to be very careful when you pick your window. And am I going to go be the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals? Hell no. Sorry. I’ll d respect to Michael Bidwell, but they got a revolving door that never needs WD40. I am not going to be the next guy who spins through a dysfunctional organization and out I go. I’m gonna wait for a better spot. The problem is the good jobs don’t come open. I mean, Tony Dunie had the the greatest fortune as it relates to coaches having everything line up just right. He got fired when he shouldn’t have been fired by the Buccaneers. And it just so happened that the Colts were bad enough in 2001 with a franchise quarterback that Jim Moira, the Elder, got fired. And boom. I mean, not many guys are walking into a spot with Payton Manning, and that’s the problem. And bad teams stay bad. And one of these teams needs to just weather the storm. And it’s easier said than done cuz the fans want something. And the owners, the owner, I want, you know, I want it now. All the other kids have it. I want it now. But there’s a reason bad teams stay bad because that cycle just continues, Devin. They keep firing guys without waiting long enough to see if they can turn the corner. What was a year? How many years had Dan Campbell been in Detroit when it was like that make or break and they decide to stay when was that only like two years that he was in Detroit? Second year second year at the by-week they were horrible. Sheila Ford Hamp gave him the vote of confidence with which felt like the dreaded vote of confidence. But that’s when it started to turn and then they capped that season by going into Green Bay and beating the Packers and keeping them out of the playoffs. Aaron Rogers last game as a Packer and that that lit the fuse for what happened in 2023. That’s how quickly it turned. But yeah, Campbell’s initial run in Detroit was as bad as all the other coaches in recent years have experienced in Detroit. But they finally they finally settled in and hey, who knows what would have happened if they hadn’t turned it around late in the 2022 season. 22. It was 22. Yeah. maybe he wouldn’t have been there. But it just shows you to change the culture, change the narrative, change the outcome. You got to win because the bad teams are bad for a reason and they’re going to move on. The Jets, the Dolphins, the Titans, the Browns, the Cardinals, you know, those are the ones right now that we see that that that spinning door. And you got to think twice before taking that head coaching job. And for a guy who’s already been fired, when you get an opportunity the second time, you better get it right. You better get it right. 1. At this point it’s laughable. JG should’ve been gone weeks ago. He insists on riding with an OC who couldn’t coordinate a drive on Madden. If he wants to “die with his staff,” then perfect—hand him a sunset, give him Kyler, and let the franchise start fresh.

  2. He will get a year with a qb he picks and that will be the make or break year. He doesn’t have his first or second string rb. The o line needs upgraded. And the defense was injured too. They are the most injured team behind the 49ers and he hasn’t had a healthy team yet. A team with starters playing might be good.

  3. Arizona is in purgatory right now – they're gonna get a rookie QB and then fire Gannon, new Head Coach won't like the new QB, Head Coach will get to pick his QB and then get fired, then the following Head Coach won't like that QB – wash, rinse, repeat.

  4. Gannon has been on the hot seat for basically the whole season. But after these last two games, it should be understood he’s gone. We need better everything.

  5. I haven’t yet watched through the entire video, but a fundamental factor into all this is Bidwill ownership – the Bidwills have always been relatively cheap by NFL standards, I believe Kliff Kingsbury is still to be paid through 2027 or something, and Gannon has another year left on his contract. Gannon’s days may be numbered but he is likely safe at least through this year, and quite possibly through next. The Bidwills have proven for many decades that winning football games is not really high on the priority list.

  6. They don't look good, only about half their roster are guys they drafted in the last 4 years, in part the rebuild is not working and they do not have a QB. I can't argue any more for Murray than Fields, arguing Brissett, Flaco, Geno might deliver more for your team is not a good place to start.

  7. I notice that he didn't mention Kyle Shannahan, who came into an awful and dysfunctional 49ers team, with no QB and engineered a 6 year contract plus selected the GM. He also went 1-10 in his 1st season as HC.

  8. Is he really? Don't give me hope please man… I've heard hes not only safe this season, hes going to be our HC for a long time. Gannon deserves to be fired yesterday.

  9. 17 flags to 1 on Sunday? No comment? Campbell also had 2 1st round draft picks for 3 years. I think we need a dei hire. The league’s first black women head coach. Then maybe the league will make calls like the Chiefs get.
