Brodie’s Breakdown vs CGY (11/13)
Brody Brazil here to recap. Game 18 on the season. And crazy how anything can happen on any given night in the NHL. The Flames had just lost three straight before facing the Sharks. Only two goals for Calgary in their prior three games. They were on a skid, but as you may have guessed, probably due to break out of it on home ice. Let’s get to our breakdown. The Sharks came in undefeated in this month of November and also eight wins across their previous 11 games. Scoring goals, yes, but more importantly holding other teams down on the scoreboard as in seven in a row, allowing two or fewer to opponents. Yoslavasarov, a huge part of that. And starting again tonight with Alex Nadulkovich away from the team right now, tending to a personal matter. And check out the generosity here of Mlin Celibbrini. If pucks are like what, 20 bucks a pop, Mack might have just given away Randy Hans’s entire suit allowance by the end of this warm-up session. Good on Mlin for representing team teal so well on the road. Not a very productive first period with two main factors here. This injury to Jeff Skinner as he lost footing near the half wall trying to win that puck away from Rory Karens’s. Skinner needed help off the ice. He didn’t put much weight on his right side. He also did not return to this game. A huge loss for the Sharks, not only in this contest, but also gives you a bad feeling already about the beyond. We’re certainly wishing number 53 the best of luck. The other factor was Jaruslav Ascarov and the ice in that first period was extremely tilted as Calgary logged 13 shots on goal and outshot San Jose by a dozen. Asi was up to the challenge and it was a little bit of everything he faced. point shots, close chances, bouncing pucks, second chances, shots through traffic, shots he could see. 30 took care of everything. And kind of a fun situation right now for Sharks fans because it’s been a while since we’ve seen the future of a franchise type goalie getting their first full NHL season in front of us. Lots of optimism here and for very good reason. We were scoreless after one and it kind of felt like the Sharks were playing with yeah fire. Calgary controlling the contest and pretty soon they were controlling the scoreboard as well but only by the slimmest of margins. This Sharks turnover and maybe a little miscommunication in their own end turns costly. Blake Coleman there is Johnny on the spot and takes it in all alone and goes top cheese on ASI. Tough spot for any goalie to be in. And the Flames are up one- nothing just 546 into the period. But you know what? These are my highlights. And I’d rather see and focus on more ASI. He remained absolutely dominant in the rest of this period. I mean, he could have broken after bending, but he did not. He also got some help from teammates like John Clingberg there right out front and was also really good when the Flames got their best grade A chances. Cross slot passes, nothing phased him. And because of that effort, the Sharks were down just one- nothing after 40, still in striking distance. And this might be a good time to make this half rant, half observation, because the Sharks of yester year, just like this, down one- nothing in a one-sided game with 20 minutes left to play on the road, may not have felt like they had a great shot or any shot to ultimately get the result, but this team does. And that’s why they’re different. That’s where they’re different. That’s how they’ve improved. Loitering is actually a skill and on a lot of nights this year that loitering will pay off. But tonight it didn’t. These were the Sharks best chances of the final period and really the entire night. It was almost a full 2 minutes with Asi pulled to go six on five. And unfortunately San Jose’s biggest problems in Alberta continued to be their downfall till the end of regulation. Not enough shots or chances on Dustin Wolf to light the lamp. San Jose getting one and five and 10 shots by period. And eventually the Flames make it look and feel like a totally different two nothing score and game with the Samuel Hanzek empty netter. But again, good effort by the Sharks. Although you can’t win if you don’t score. It’s the second time this season they’ve been shut out. Yeah, I think it was uh really frustrating. I don’t think we were ready to ready to play tonight and um I think it was just overall frustrating. I think um obviously they they’re a hardworking team and uh they’re desperate, but um I think what has made us successful this season is being desperate. So obvious obviously a little disappointing. Um I I I don’t think there’s a reason. I think you know is just just one of those games. Um you know didn’t have it didn’t come come prepared or or whatnot or or whatever it was. Um but I mean you know it’s It’s a quick turnaround, so I mean, learn from it and and go to Seattle and and, you know, just try to get better. I mean, I think we just weren’t uh executing at all today. It was just um yeah, not a good game at all. And uh it’s unfortunate cuz uh we were definitely uh you know, going in a good direction, but it’s we have to move on and we have to to look at what we did wrong, but learn from it. and uh now it’s next to is Seattle and uh we have to correct it and be better. And so overall this one does not really go into the bad game category/ situation for the Sharks. Just an unfortunate evening in Calgary on the scoring side, which had been doing enough lately to also get the results. But still, if you can get this kind of defensive effort from the Sharks on any regular basis the rest of this season, you absolutely take that as a positive. That is the foundation of getting this team a lot more wins the rest of this season. We’ll see you for the next recap on Saturday from Seattle.

tons of respect brodie, but excluding asky, that was the worst hockey this team has played all of 2025. I believe this team can beat anyone if they show up, but they need to be held responsible for bad losses
The Sharks need to address the shots on goal againat and also they need to be shooting the puck more. They were scoring a lot in their first few games. To get shotout really 1 to nothing and allowed almost 40 SOG to the team w the worat record, the Sharks just didn't show up for this game. Skate, use your speed. Forecheck. You can force the other teams to take penalties when they have to chase you or get frustrated retaliating.
Hey Brodie, thanks for the breakdown but I do have one question – is it time to consider a major coaching change, especially for those responsible for the backend? Warsofsky and his team have done a great job overseeing a last place club during the initial parts of the rebuild, but now that this team has the skill to win games, the defensive coaches and maybe even the top guy needs to be evaluated.
Giveaways were acceptable three seasons ago, but here we are in 2025 and it looked like I was watching the Sharks defense from 2022. And this has been a problem even earlier this year, but the team is now talented enough in goal and up front, so it can hide its defensive issues. Orlov and Klingberg were brought in to help mentor Dickenson, but instead they are showing him how not to play. Tonight, the # of breakdowns peaked and were absolutely unacceptable – yikes!!
Defensive structure is not exactly the most exciting part of the game, but for the Sharks to take the next big step forward and not waste the skill of (or burn out) Askarov in net and Celebrini and the guys up front – maybe its time for the Sharks to consider making some changes. Thoughts?
I really don't understand why Dickinson and Muk are held to such high standards and sit for seemingly no reason, yet Klinkberg can make mistake after mistake and still be thrown out there during the 6 on 5. He's absolutely a liability and killed the powerplay but Warso just loves him so much for some reason.
Guys, it was a rough game, but it’s one game. It’s not the end of the season, just gotta have wake-up call kind of games like this to get moving in the right direction again.
The Calgary bums, Jesus, wake the fuck up
It’s just so annoying how Warsofsky lets klingberg ruin the team
Grier get rid of some of those "d-men" and let the kids play at least they would give excuses for some bad games ! Klingberg should be retired ….
Really awful game by everyone except Asky. As others have said, it is just one game. However, Klingberg has been pretty bad. Brutal giveaways, taking lazy penalties and seemingly stifling the 1st power play unit.
I'd like to see Klingberg scratched for the next game and bring back Muk. Orlov seemed to be a better fit on the 1st power play unit and then have Liljegren on the second (maybe give Dickinson some time there)
Sharks need to be better on the defence, it was dreadful in this game. Can’t leave it all to Asky every game. I really hope skinner is okay, as well as Eklund and smith as they both seemed a bit injured too.
We’re on to Cincinnati
I guess since when Drew Remenda made critical remarks about the team a while ago and was soon after an announcer for the Oilers, Brodie doesn't want to get fired. But "If we can get the same level of play from the defense…" as a positive was nonsense. Defensive play was turnover after turnover, punctuated by blindly icing the puck. I understand your situation, Brodie, but dial back the Homer just a tad…
Some people here need to chill. Did you expect the Sharks to win every game this year? Talking about a coaching change this early in the season is ridiculous. Where was everyone during that little run of wins against some monster teams? You are either with this team and riding with us or STFU.
Another message for the Sharks…. Remind the players to ignore POSITIVE social media as much as possible. Yes positive messaging can also damage. On Wed, Sportsnet power ranked the Sharks at 13th!! Don’t let their heads get filled with delusions of grandeur! They’re not there yet…. Maybe by the end of the season! Keep working boys! Let’s Go Sharks!
Lets get a win against seattle!!
