🔴 LIVE: Washington Commanders vs Kansas City Chiefs |Oct 27th WEEK 8 FULL GAME|MADDEN NFL 26 SIM

[Applause] Set to go is the kicker Harrison Buteransas Monday All right, prime time is underway. Luke McCaffrey now on the return and he’s brought down just beyond that 25 yd line. So the Commander offense headed out for their opening drive. They’ll be led out by an elite runner, one of the game’s top dual threat young quarterbacks. He was taken second in 2024, Jaden Daniels. Kate, when you partner a relentless work ethic with elite athleticism, you get Jaden Daniels. He put on an absolute show. But one of the best rookie years in the history of the game for a quarterback and with a work ethic and speed and arm, I don’t know why he would ever slow down. First and 10 now. Here’s Daniels stepping up and he’s going to run. Kate, if you’ve heard me say it once, you’ve heard me say it a hundred times. Completions, completions, completions. Well, that wasn’t a pass. It was a scramble, but Annette’s the same thing. Keeping this offense on schedule. Nice spot here for the offense. It’s second and one. This is Jacorei Krosky Merritt getting it for the first time. That is exactly why you rallied to the football. Got through one tackle, but the next guy gets him for a loss. Kate, it’s amazing how fast these guys are on the field and how fast your fortunes can turn. Second and short run. You’re feeling good about yourself. But with a negative play, well, now comes a critical third down. About set. This is third and five. Here’s Daniels. Escapes the pocket. Oh, he’s going to run for it. And he’s going to be brought down in enemy territory now at the 46. A big play 23 yds to move those chains and a Washington first down. First and 10 at the 46 yd line. Obviously, a defense wants to take away all the reads and prevent any kind of big throw for the first down. Fine. Well, this QB, he’ll just lower his head and gash the defense with one of the biggest runs of the game. New set of downs for him from the 46 on first down. Here’s Daniels. Took off with it again. You know, Kate, they always say that QB clock, you know what it’s more like? It’s more like an alarm, especially in a situation like that. And it’s a good thing he woke up to it. Able to make something out of nothing and at least keep them moving forward. After a good pickup, they’ve got second and four. throwing now. Daniels taking off with it again. And he’s taken down, but he’s got it to the 29. And hold on everyone, there’s a Commander player shaken up after that play and he’s in need of some attention. [Applause] Opening script working gang busters so far. First and 10 now at the 29. Throwing off the play fake. [Applause] buys time rolling right and he’s tackled for no gain. The positive of that effort, you didn’t go backwards. Didn’t have a negative play. If there was a negative, you didn’t get a whole lot done with your legs. Got to be more efficient now on second down. They’ll come to the line here. Second and nine. Back to throw. Mariota and he let his man just a little too much there. That’s an incomplete pass. Jaylen Lane, the one he was looking for. So now it’s going to be third longrend. Kate, I think that’s a little taster, little entree of what’s to come for this wide receiver. He’s going to have to make some plays into some contested coverages and he couldn’t do it right there. Daniels throwing on third. He’s going to loft this deep down the left sideline. And we all saw it. Flag came out just before that one fell incomplete. They may still get some big yards out of this one. So pass interference on the shot to the end zone. And now they’re going to be set up on the goal line with a great chance to get the touchdown anyway. Defense no doubt still recovering from that interference call, Brock. But they’ve got to buckle down here. It’s first and goal from the red zone now. Pressure coming and they take him down. And it’s step one towards a goal line stand. Still going to need a couple more though. Second and goal coming up. All the data lately has taught us really clearly. Sacks, negative yardage plays. They not only just destroy that play, they destroy drives. Well done, defense. [Applause] leading 10 yardds now as they line up. It’s second and goal. Throwing from the gun here. Got his target. That’s Lane. I’m not going to lie. I know they got a completion and completions you never turn them down. But to make that throw for those yards into double coverage, that is way too much risk for that reward. Big play for this offense. It’s third and goal. Daniels now got him deep behind the line. Oh, the ball is out. But it looks like someone from the Commanders got to that one. They’ll keep the football. Well, they scrambled back on top of the fumble. They lose a ton though and now they’ve got fourth down coming up. Yeah, recovering it really only brought you one more play. But with how much they lost on that play, well, here come the special teams. And now, well, now they got to be special. On now is Matt Gay to try this Commander field goal. He’s looking 34 yds here down the middle. Gaze kick is good and they get three on their first series. Hope to build on that in the drives ahead. Anytime you go on the road, if you can put points on the board on your opening drive, job well done. [Applause] Here’s Gay now to handle the kickoff for Washington on the return. Here’s Nico Riillo. He stopped on the run back at the 27. So here are the Chiefs out on offense for their first drive. leading them out. Someone who Brock I think needs less introduction than anyone in the NFL today. It’s Patrick Mahomes. It’s pretty remarkable, isn’t it, Kate? That the worst season statistically in Mahomes career was still good enough to finish sixth in the MVP voting and reach a fourth straight Super Bowl. Shows just how high his bar is compared to everyone else. And he’s still the QB that almost all are chasing. Mahomes getting a throw on this first play. That’s complete. Isaiah Pacheco and they will finally catch up to him. Just a second before he can reach that 40. They’ll move the chains after that pick up of 12. Well, you love when you can go from first down to first down. Brock makes things easy for an offense and it is the primary reason that he gets looks that he does. Every touch he gets has a solid chance of working out just like that. It’s why many of these first quarter looks have his name all over him. From the gun, it’s Mahomes. He had it for a moment, but a great defensive play to jar it loose. Incomplete. Can’t cover it much better than that. Really well covered, Kate, on that play. There just simply was not a window for him to sneak that throw in. So, it’s second and 10 now. Ball still at that 39 yd line. [Applause] Quick throw completed by Mahomes and defenders arriving in support to finish him off at the line. A gain of one brings up third down and nine. Drive in dire straits. It’s third and nine. Here he goes. Third and long. Check down complete to PCO and he’s out of bounds before he could challenge for that marker. It’s fourth down. I know on the stat sheet, Kate, that shows up as passing yards, but any defensive coordinator will take it. Understanding down and distance and keeping that offense short of the sticks. The Chief’s looking to put on fourth down. So, on comes Matt Arisa to handle it. and he can’t evade the coverage team for much. They stop him before he gets really anything on that return. Back out run the Commanders for their second drive of the game. They’ve got an early three nothing lead as they take over here. All right, the Washington offense is set. Here comes first and 10. [Applause] Giving this to Crosky Merritt and he gets it forward to steal about a yard out of that. Drew Tranquil brings him to the ground. I don’t think that’s the amount that they were looking for there, Kate. Going to lead to some shuffling around here in the playbook. A more aggressive call on second. 18 yd line. Last run. Not a lot of help. Brock. Nine to go now on second down. From the gun. It’s Daniels. Now here he goes. They gain 14 on the play and the Commanders will have a first. It’s a gain of 14 yds and a Commander first down. You know, these are the type of plays that really get an offense going. This is a chance for QB to inspire the guys around him. Calling his own number, carrying his teammates to a first down on that big run that inflates an offense and it can suck the wind out of that defense. Now running out of the pistol, Crossky Merritt and he’s not going to manage to get back to the line even tackled for a loss. We’ve got second and 11. These edge defenders in the league today, Kate, they’ve got so much on their list to do. A huge to-do list, they got to get to the passer. They got to set an edge. And they got to stop that run game. Not just on the end of the line, but in that case, right in the middle of the field. Shotgun snapped to Daniels into the hands of Taran Mclloren. So, a solid game there, Brock, but still third down and short that they’ve got to figure out now as they pick up nine on that previous play. up third and well, there’s a time to be a little finessy with the football. Put a little touch on and then there’s time to put your arm into it and let it eat. Throw it right through your target’s chest. This one, well, that one right there was the ladder. Smart to make a fast ball zing in before anyone could undercut the curl route. They’re turning to the option on third and short. Oh, he drops a cut to the right sideline and he’s going to take this down to the opposing 44. The end result there, 15 yds and a first. That’s good. When they drop these plays for the quarterback, these are the type of results they’re expecting. Kate, something that could tear a hole in the defense, move the chains, and just as importantly, and maybe most importantly, put a seed of doubt and thought into that defensive mind that the QB can run at any time. And he’s not going to manage to get back to the line. Even tackled for a loss. We’ve got second and 11. And it’s not just in quarterbacks, Brock Hard, who got to have short memories. You tell me this, too. Defenses need them sometime as well. Yeah, 100%. You give up a big run, well, too bad. No time to dwell on it because you got to line up, buckle up that chin strap, and try to knock him backwards. Out of the gun, Daniels caught by Debo Samuel. And he has it to the 23 yd line as he’s brought down. They strike for 23 yds and that’ll be good for a Washington first. Washington first down. It’s a gain of 23 yds and a Commander first down. [Music] I think my favorite part was the magic he worked after the catch. The way he took the completion and made so much more out of it by adding all the extra yardage. So, a new set of downs. Here we go. First and 10. Daniels. That’s McLaren with a catch out left and he’s brought down after a short game. Well, the odds aren’t great when you throw into double coverage. Normally you see one of the defenders make a play on the ball. Two men nearby and that’s a missed opportunity for the coverage to make an impact play. This is second and six coming up. They go inside give to Crosky Merritt and the defense all over this run. Maybe got a yard there as he tried to bounce that one outside. They pick up one on the run. Need more though. That takes him to third and five. And it’s third. Sometimes you just feel like in the background of every whole home run is a bigger play that just needed one more component. Hit that extra block a little longer. Find the lane quicker. The defender may be a half step late and this could have been much much more exciting. Third and short. Daniels and he will score. It’s a Washington touchdown. The Commanders stretch their early lead to nine. [Applause] Quite the strike to his tight end and the patience he showed waiting for that to break open. That was awesome. And it’s rewarded with six. You know, it should be simple, Kate. Right. In in philosophy, it should be simple. Just plaster that big guy, throw bodies at him in coverage, but stopping a tight end near the end zone is anything but simple with how deceptively good they are as route runners and finding that football when it arrives. Matt Gay on for the extra points. The point after splits the upright and the Commanders go up 10 zip here in the first. Commanders 10, Chiefs nothing. Here’s [Applause] Gay now to handle the kickoff for Washington. Rami with the return, finds some space. He’s past the 30 and the tackle’s made as he gets it out to the 32. The Chiefs sending their offense out for the second time this game and they’re certainly hoping for some better results here after that first drive ended in a punt. It’s a new set of downs for him at the 32. [Applause] Quick throw right side complete to start this drive. Pass the 35. 20 15 and he’s in for the Kansas City touchdown. The Chiefs reduce the lead to just four. Xavier Worthy the touchdown. Not a lot of processing time from the moment he pulled it back to the moment he made that throw, Brock. But I think we can all agree he made the right choice not to hand it off and then the right read on that throw. Yeah, he sure did, kid. It kind of reminds me of the offshoot quarterbacks of our day growing up, right? Those guys that made that pitch and it was just second nature. They were on the run, guys all around him. Didn’t matter. He’s going to put that pitch right on him. The great RPO quarterbacks of today do exactly the same thing with their throws. Now Harrison Bucker for the point after [Music] right down the middle. It’s good. Good. And the Chiefs cut it to a field goal game. Score Commanders 10, Chiefs seven. [Applause] [Applause] But on now to kick this one away. On the return, this is McCaffrey and he’s brought down just beyond that 25 yd line. on the return. The Commanders and QB Jaden Daniels headed out for their next look on offense. And I know we’re normally discussing his work leading the passing game, but wow, we’ve really had to take note of what he’s done on the ground. He’s leaned into that part of his game early. [Applause] Commanders to the line now, Brock, here comes first and 10. Frosty Merritt straight ahead and in a blink they are off to midfield before somebody manages to stop him. A big play 23 yds to move those chains. That’s good for a Commander. Even with everything he racked up on that run, you could argue he deserved maybe a little bit more. That call was the perfect one to break for big yards. The only thing that saved the defense from a score was getting that contact to slow him down and eventually finally stop him. [Applause] Going to the ground again on first and he gets up for a gain of about four. You know, Kate, it’s plays like that. It’s just kind of the meat and potatoes not going to make any highlight reel, but just the positive efficient plays on the ground you need to keep plays and drives alive. First down run. Nabs him five. Now second and five. Froky Merritt on his own read and he’ll get him a handful on that run as we’ve reached the end of the first. That’s going to do it for our first quarter here on Monday Night Prime Time. Scoreboard shows 107. Back to Arrowhead in just a moment. [Applause] Time now for the second quarter. Commanders in possession. They’re looking at yet another first and 10 on this drive. He’s across the 20. Still going and he’s finally taken down at the seven yd line. They rip off a big chunk of field and it sets him up with first and goal. That’s another Washington Commander first down. First and goal at the seven yd line. What are you doing? Sure seems like he knew exactly what he wanted and he got it going right where he wanted to with the ball off the snap. First and goal. Crossy Merritt. And that right there is the start of what could be a goal line stand. They hit him for a loss on first and goal. That one felt kind of counterintuitive there, Brock. They load up the line with that extra blocking and then the run goes out to the edge anyway. That’s right. You put two tight ends on the field. Yeah, you could live with a stalemate. It’s hard to move people in the NFL, but you do not want to go backwards. That’s quickly out to McLaren. Touchdown Washington. The Commanders make it a nine-point advantage. Terry McLuren with the touchdown. So he finds his man in space and then the wide out takes advantage. Nice finish there to take it in for six. Yeah, no question about it. We know points are always a premium in this league and this really becomes a three to four point play, right? When you don’t have to settle for field goals. You could throw it underneath and your receivers do that much damage in the open field and score a touchdown. That’s big time. [Applause] Gay to add the extra points. The point after extra points sent right down the middle and the Commanders make it a 10-point ball game. Commanders 17, Chiefs 7. [Applause] Here’s [Music] [Applause] Gain now to handle the kickoff. for Washington. Rami with the return. He dodged the tackle and that’s going to set them up just beyond their own 20. Offense heading out now for the Chiefs. Well, Brock, it only took him one play to reach the end zone last drive. They might have to work a little bit harder this time out. now. Kansas City looks settled in and ready. Here we go. First and 10. Off the play fake. It’s Momes. He’s got a man left and he’ll go down after pushing this up to the 29. Kid, I can promise you that’s one of those play action plays they’ve repped over the week during practice. They’re both quarterback and tight end went to bed last night thinking, “Man, I hope this one’s called.” And when it is, I hope we have just a little space to operate. That play action works beautifully. And the tight end, the beneficiary. Now, play action. It’s Momes. He completes it in traffic. And he’s going to have this up near the 40, just a little bit short of it. They come through with a nice gain there. Gain of 10, first down. Well, that right there is about the best you could hope for against double coverage. Good chunk of yards, and more importantly, Brock, you don’t get burned taking a risk. Yeah, it’s really the defense that gets burned. And that is just demoralizing. You got double coverage, you got what you want, and two guys can’t stop one. Left side, it’s caught by Rice and he has it up towards midfield before he’s taken down at the 47. Rice. That is a textbook first down completion. Sets up second and very manageable and creates space to take that shot downfield. After a good pickup, they’re set up with second and short. They go play action. It’s Momes. Bails out of the pocket quick. He’s going to keep it this time. He gets six on that play. And the Chiefs are going to have a first down. A gain of six. That’s good for a Kansas City Chiefs. You know, that’s one of those little mental rolodex plays right before the snap. You know, if the read isn’t there, that option isn’t there. You can use your legs to make the adjustment and go get the first down. Football on that 47 yd line. First down. Operating from the gun. Here’s Momes. He’s keeping it again. And Mahomes is going to dodge a hit with that slide after he picks up enough for the first down. It’s a gain of 11. That’s another Kansas City Chiefs. You know, Kate, back in the day, we had a slip and slide of practice for moments just like that. Actually practicing how to slide and get out of harm’s way. Nice gain on the play and denied that defense yet another chance to take a shot on him. He’s descended upon quickly and dropped after looks like a yard gain. It was Preston Smith with a stop. I think one thing you learn, Kate, when you transition from college to the NFL, not every run is going to be a big play. Some of them, well, they’re just destined to end in a minimal game. And some of them will set up that critical play action for later. Out of the gun, it’s Momes. Has him on the quick hitter. And this one doesn’t go far. There’s no question, Kate, that the big play is down the seam or what make tight ends a fan favorite. But it’s those type of catches right there, the short yardage, it gets good coverage, contested catches that really make tight ends a locker room favorite. Nice drive here. It’s up to eight plays as they get set for third and six. They’ll air it out on third. got a man and Kelsey has it. And he pushes this down to the 22 yd line. It’s a gain of 11 there. And that picks up the first. Another Kansas City Chiefs first down. Defenders in the area. They still make the connection, Brock. Almost looked like it was just another throw on the practice field. Yeah, this is how you just develop that just trust factor, that connection. We see it with QBs and tight ends, and the best of them make it look easy. A first down carry for PCO and he can only manage one yard. The defenders were at the ready to bring him down. And we know running the ball in the NFL is hard and that play pretty indicative of it. Here’s the key though. At the end of the game, those type of plays got to be in the minority and the majority have got to do some damage. Following that little two-yd run, it’s second and eight. To the air, Momes. Here’s a screen set up for Pacheco. and they’ll get there and stop him at the line. He specializes in salvaging broken plays out of the back field, but even he couldn’t get anything out of that one, Kate. That defense, they were all over it. [Music] It’s third and eight. Need to get a chunk here. [Applause] To the air on third and long. can’t find anyone open and he’s forced to throw it away. You know, Kate, that was one of those situations where you hear a quarterback having a clock, right? You know, and he had enough time in the pocket, but then it was like, okay, time is running out and I got to do something. He did not force a throw and risk a pick. Instead, he just got rid of it and cut his losses. So, on fourth down, the Chiefs field goal unit and Harrison Bucker headed out. 37 yds in the right half. But knocks it through and that’ll bring it back to within a score. The lead seven. That’s a type of long sustained drive that takes some of the starch out of your opponent. The only negative is that the kicking team was out there for a field goal and not an extra point. But they do come away with three. Harrison Butler. And just like that, we’re back to a onep possession ball game as the kickoff is away. On the return, this is McCaffrey. This makes it up to the 25. Commanders take over. The Commanders and Terry McLuren ready for another look on offense. They were able to say mission accomplished on their last series, finding that end zone, but the work, well, it starts all over again right now. And you know this, Kate, from our years together of doing this. I’m a firm believer of call it till they stop it. It doesn’t mean you have to innovate right away. Call the same plays until they stop them because they prove last drive they couldn’t. Offense into the shotgun set as they line this up. First and 10. Daniels setting up the play action. He lobbs this one up. Looking deep to the right side and his perfect start is over. And that’s the first one of his throws to wind up incomplete. So, first time we’ve seen one of his passes hit the ground this game. Brock, he been perfect before that one. Well, we hear it and we know it, right? The team that makes fewer mistakes in this league typically wins the game. Yeah, that was what would you call a first mistake throwing the ball and they still got the lead thanks to earlier efforts to throw again on second down. Daniels fits it through the middle and they’re going to bring him down just a moment before he’s able to break it across midfield. It’s a 23 yd pickup on the play and the Commanders will have a first. First and 10 at the 47 yd line. This entire play, Kate, depends on how well he can separate from his man. You get man-to-man coverage, it’s really about two things. Separation and trust. Because QBs want to throw it before he breaks, that’s the trust. And then they got to believe that that separation could create the big play down the field. Daniels on first down. And he just hucks this one away. Wasn’t going to risk a throw or force something. It brings up second down. Well, that’s one you chalk up to the pressure earning that incompletion. They came in before he could find a target. Hit him. Altered that last second attempt to get rid of it. No luck on first down. Here’s second and 10. From the gun, a run for Crosky Merritt. And he gets this all the way to the 25 before they stop him. He’ll move the sticks after ripping off a gain of 28. It’s a gain of 28 yds and a Commander first down. Those unsung heroes, those big guys up front on the O line. Well, let’s give them a little love right here, Kate. They don’t always get the attention they deserve on a broadcast, but let me tell you, they played a huge role in that big old run. On first down, here’s Daniels. Short pass brought in and he’s going to be taken down near the eight yd line. That’s a pickup of 17 yds, partner. And it makes it first and goal. Move the chains. Got to move them chains. Build momentum. Keep that defense on its heels. Offense in position now. It’s first and goal. Merrick gets it from the gun and into a sea of bodies he goes. Looks like they’ll get about three out of it. the ball carrier. That sure looks like a terrific call after you dial it up because the execution was awesome by everybody. You get that kind of run on first and goal, it sets the table for more success. Still chances to get these final four yards, it’s second and goal. Daniels now and that’s a Washington touchdown. The Commanders take a 13-point lead. No hesitation on that throw. He got the guy he wanted right away and he got it to him for the touchdown. You know, it’s great, Kate, to draw plays that have all sorts of different options. But it’s even better when you don’t have to get to your second read. His first broke open just like they planned. And that’s six in the end. [Applause] Gay to add the extra points. The point after [Applause] the point after splits the upright and the Commanders double their lead to 14. Commanders 24, Chiefs 10. [Applause] Matt Gay to kick off. Here’s Gay now to handle the kickoff. Here’s Smith on the return and in the end he’s able to get it to about the 25 yd line before he’s hauled down. The Kansas City offense back out there and set to go and down double digits. Brock field goals like we saw on their last drive aren’t going to move the needle as much as they need to. All right, working from the gun to starts. First and 10. From the gun, it’s Momes. He’s going to pull this one down and run with it. And Mahomes is going to dodge a hit with that slide after he picks up enough for the first down. It’s a gain of 11 and a Kansas City Chiefs first down. First, when a play breaks down, every once in a while, you got to be able to make a play with your legs. His offense counts on that ability to evade pressure and occasionally make plays just like that one. First down ball at the 36. Now it’s Momes. Oh, that one’s nearly intercepted. The defense read that one perfectly. A poor choice to make that throw. Second down coming up. Fairly safe to say as that one falls incomplete this first half so far. Well, it’s not met the standard they set for themselves. All right, still 10 to go here after they almost had an interception on first down. Mahomes trying again here on second and 10. Completed over the middle and he’s got a decent gain before being brought down. Sometimes when you’re just looking to move it forward, get some small yards on a throw. Quarterback’s best friend, security blanket. And when it’s a big old tight end, that’s an extra bonus. We’re to the two-minute warning from Arrowhead. And it’s the Chiefs facing a third and six. They’ll throw third and long. He finds Worthy complete and he’ll be taken down but not until he reaches that 45 yd line. Give him 15 yds on the pickup there and it’ll be first down Kansas City. And those are the completions they rely on from their passing game. First and 10 at the 45 yd line. All on the 45. First and 10. Come on, boys. Again, Mahomes to throw completes this one to Rice and he’s going to be taken down a yard shy of the 25. That play goes for 19 and a new set of downs. Nice to see that connection, that chemistry working between the two of them. First and 10 at the 26 yd line. Coming to the line for another first and 10. Another throw for Mahomes and all he can do is get back to the line on that effort. So, no gain on first down. I don’t know why every once in a while I’ll get these little flashbacks, but a little play like that just flashes me back to the preseason, my first preseason. One of the veteran QB said, “Hey, Brock, whatever you do, just find completions. You will never go broke taking a profit. Go get a completion. They’re at a premium in this league.” Here’s Momes brought in close to the eight and the stop is made three yds from the end zone. It’s going to be first and goal. The commanders take a timeout. They’re first they’ll have two left to work with before halftime. First and goal at the three yd line. Four downs now to get in. Here’s first and goal. [Applause] attack. Ball and defender arrived at the exact same time there and it’ll be second and goal. Still a couple of shots at this one. Targets have far less room to work in this red zone. Brock, but down this close as a former quarterback, I’m just going to assume you got to feel like he should have been able to hold on through whatever. Yeah. And every once in a while you get in that huddle and you remind them, now listen guys, it’s going to be contested. We We know it’s a physical game all 100 yards up and into the red zone. Touchdown Kansas City. The Chiefs make it a one-sore game before halftime. It’s an Isaiah Pacheco touchdown. Well, great work there, Brock. They weathered the storm and now they’ve gotten themselves right back into this ball game. Anybody who’s played this game has been here before. The game doesn’t start the way you want. You’re in a big hole and all you can do is climb out of it. And the words of Pete Carroll resonate. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. [Applause] But cur to try the point after [Applause] right down the middle. It’s good. Good. And the Chiefs chop the lead in half. It’s down to seven. Commanders 24, Chiefs 17. Yeah. [Applause] Harrison. Just like that, we’re back to a onep possession ball game as the kickoff is away. It’s Debo Samuel with the return and a decent run back is going to end as they bring him down inside the 30. The Commanders and running back Jaci Crosky Merritt headed back to the field now. They’re up by seven. Let’s see if they choose to rest on that and just go into the locker room. [Applause] All right, the Washington offense is set. Here comes first and 10. Shotgun snapped to Daniels. That one’s incomplete. Had the connection, but some stone hands got in the way there. Oh, that drop is such a bummer because it ruins the payoff of such a welldesigned play. Kate got the man open, beat the coverage, but then you got to go finish it. You got to go make that catch. I will say, keep that one in mind. They could revisit that play in the future. Second down and 10. Daniels finds him over the middle and he’ll go down after fighting his way to the 32. Terry, it takes a certain level of fearlessness, craziness to work over the middle of the field in this league. You’re fighting through guys as you go. And all the while, you know, you could take a lick at any time. Six yds to go here. It’s third down. Third and long. They’re going to throw. Got his target. That’s Lane. And they’ll take him down after he advances this up to about the 43. Washington calls it second timeout. And they still have one in their pocket for what’s left of this half. down. You know, it sure seems like he knew exactly where he was going with that before the snap. That’s a pre- snap decision that led to a postnap first down. Let’s see how they attack this first down Brock from the 43 to throw again. And it’s Daniels throwing the out route complete and he’s able to move past the 45 before going out. Kate, if there was one throw in the game plan that kept me up at night more than any other, it was an out route versus zone coverage because you got to throw with anticipation, but you also got to make sure those defenders eyes aren’t reading you like a book. To the air again. Daniels makes the catch and he’s tackled with a first down yardage. All right, with 6 seconds left, we’ve got a timeout. Quarterbacks will look for their tight end short in just about any situation. They take away the deeper options. Well, there’s their consistent source of positive yardage, the trusty tight end. [Applause] Ball on the 45. First and 10. Daniels is going to throw again. Throwing this for the end zone and they will not connect. Took his shot there to end the half, but no dice. That’s going to take us to the break. All right, Kate, thanks very much. Welcome in everyone to the Orlando studios. Scott Hansen with you for a quick halftime report. We’ll let both sides catch their breath and get their orange wedges as we’re going to get ready for the third quarter action. So, let’s go back out to the stadium as we rejoin our broadcast team, Kate Scott and Brock Huard. Thanks for that update, Scots. Welcome back everyone for the third quarter. Had a one-touchdown game here as we get you back down to the field. [Applause] [Applause] Well, if you love highscoring games, no doubt you have been glued to your television so far. And no signs of slowing down as we begin our second half. He’s got a lane up past the 30. Tackles made so this drive will begin at the 34 yd line. The Chiefs have their offense out to start this third quarter. They’ll try to get that ground game established better than they did in the opening half, Brock. See if they can attack that deficit. [Applause] Here’s first and 10 from the 34. [Applause] A counter give here to Pacheco and he’ll take this ahead for seven. We’ve got second and three now. While that run may not move the chains, Kate, that is such a confidence builder. Sets the tone for more play action, maybe more runs. That’s exactly how you want to start a drive. Nice run. Last play sets up second and two. It’s PCO again and he’ll pick up enough to move the chains. A gain of six. And a Kansas City Chiefs first down. First and 10 at the 48 yd line. Well, look at here. You don’t even have to worry now about a third down call as that run moves the sticks. Now that call you had ready though, you can recycle it. Save it for later for that next third down coming. And he takes it up and across midfield to Commander territory. Across midfield with the 48 yd line. A gain of four. It’s now second and six. [Music] [Applause] Second and six coming up here. Tight end going in motion here. Quick throw completed by Momes and he’ll cross the 50 and start pushing onto the opposing side of the field. Worthy. It’s a gain of four. Brings up third and three to the line. Here’s third and three. [Applause] Out of the gun. And it’s Mahomes and that one’s too far in front of him. So now they’re facing fourth down. The numbers tell us pretty clearly, you get to third and long, extra long, it’s really hard to stay on the field. That’s disappointing because that was third and manageable in an incomplete. The only move this offense is making is toward the line. Brock, they’re going for it. Fourth and three. Looking to throw. He finds him beyond the marker and he’s taken down at the 30. Left the offense out there on fourth down, Brock. And look at the result. A big gain. They got 15 and the first. Kansas City Chiefs first down. First and 10. There’s no routes on the old proverbial route tree, Kate. That takes more trust than throwing an out route. You’re throwing it to a spot and believing your guy can get there. First and 10 now from the 30. right back to Worthy and he’ll get it down to the 24 yd line following that completion. Remember the O line looks to be in some pain. They’re headed out to take a look at him now. [Applause] Offense to line. This is second and four. Back to the air. Momes throwing quickly, but it’s incomplete. No luck finding his receiver that time. And now they need to get four on third down. He’s been a frequent target throughout this game, Brock. We’ve seen that coverage tighten up a little bit more on him every time the ball’s thrown his way. Well, hasn’t taken him off the board completely. He’s still beaten them for some catches, but that heightened focus defensively does lead to moments like that one where what would normally be a catch falls incomplete. Has him on the quick hitter and he’s tackled with a first down yardage. It’s a gain of eight. That’s another Kansas City Chiefs first down. Well, he saw his guys pick up the blitz. Well, he felt them pick it up anyway if he wasn’t looking at him. But with their effort on his behalf, I think this QB felt owed to them and the group up front to find somebody to get a completion. So, that effort up front wasn’t in vain. [Applause] Pacheco gets it from the gun. Dropped by the first guy he met. No gain on that first down run. I know these DNs love to get to the quarterback. I know that sacks many times equals a bigger payday, but doing the dirty work, playing the run well, that’s what the best of the ends do in this league. Well, nothing doing on the last run. It’s second and 10. Operating from the gun, here’s Momes. Finds the in round complete. And that tackle stops him after a solid game. Hey, one thing I learned from the late great Mike Leech is, yeah, the system was called air raid, but it wasn’t just attacking downfield. His philosophy, and it played out right there, is you have to attack every inch of the field, both vertically and horizontally, without routes or in routes, just like that. Third and short. Here’s Momes. Escapes out to the left and he’s out of bounds before he could challenge for that marker. It’s fourth down. You know, once a play breaks down, you’re just looking for a running lane and then you’re looking for that first down marker. He found one of the two, but the defense and that effort swarming after him. Well, it denies the first down. So on fourth down, the Chiefs field goal unit and Harrison Buter headed out. He’s hit once already. This is a short one inside of 30 yards. But knocks it through and it’s dropped back down now to a four-point game. That’s why they spend all the time on the practice field during the week. That kind of operation, perfect rhythm, perfect timing, and a two for two for this kicker. Harrison. We’ve got a good one here. They’ve cut the lead to four as they send it away. On the return, this is McCaffrey. [Applause] And in the end, he’s able to get it to what used to be a touchback. It’s at the 25 yd line. The Commanders set to take over. They’ve certainly had no issues scoring, but their opponents have been right there with them. So, they could really use some more points on this drive. Commanders to the line now, Brock, here comes first and 10. Starting on the grounds here, Crossky Merritt can’t slip that initial tackle. Stops made for no gain on that first down play. Made it all looks so simple, didn’t he? That linebacker sorting right through the traffic, finding the runner. That’s instincts come to life. First down run netted him nothing. Here is second and 10. [Applause] That one goes for 17 yds and moves the chains. A gain of 17 yds. And a Washington first down. Oo, I like that. I really like that execution to move the chains. Now that third down call that they had ready. Well, they could stick it right back in their pocket for a later occasion. They’ll head up first and 10 from the 42. [Applause] Daniel’s going to keep it. Breaks a tackle and give him four yards before he stopped. Brock, get second down. The difference right there, Kate, between that gain and a big hit for a loss. Some really quick decision making. He made a quick read. Saw the running back was going to get hit if he handed it. And he pulls it himself for a positive gain. They’ll come up after that fouryd gain. It’s second and six. Daniels setting up the play action. It’s caught. This is Dory Crosky Merritt. And again, only about two before he heads out. That means they’re going to face third down. That’s a defense’s goal, right Kate? Just get us to third down so we can have a chance to get off the field. And that was a good adjustment on that stop in particular when the back ended up being the target and they were able to keep him short of the sticks. Third and short. Daniels, no luck on the connection. It’s incomplete. You know, Kate, with the game that they put together, it’s surprising to see them really run into any hiccups when they appear. They move the ball very well throughout, just unsuccessful on that third down. Commanders punting on fourth down and they’re going to bring out the ever reliable lefty vets Tresway. [Applause] And that’s going to pin them as deep as it can go. They’re going to be set up inside their own 5 yd line. The Kansas City offense set to take the field and they’ll have to go just about every bit of 100 yardds to reach the end zone. That punt sets them up at their own two. Chiefs coming up to the line here. It’s first and 10. Gives a BCO to start the drive. You call that one a gain of let’s say two yards in second down. Gained a little bit there. Kind of feels like a gain of nothing. Know why? Because you’re still playing with your backs against the end zone. No real breathing room and no margin for air. Need a better result than that last run. And it’s second and eight. [Applause] From the gun, it’s Momes. He can run it. That play good for 17 and a first down. Momes. A gain of 17 yds and a Kansas City Chiefs first down. Well, there was no sense in taking a risk down the field when a first down was just a run away. They’ll get to reset now and figure out just how they want to attack a new set of downs. They’ll come up on first and 10. A give right side. Here’s PCO set out of bounds after a pickup of six. Seven four coming up. A humble five to sixyd gain on the ground. Not a huge game. Not a gamechanging play by any means, but one that keeps you on schedule and takes some of the starch out of that front seven. First down run gets him six. So now it is second and four. Now a pass play. Here’s Momes. He drops this down to Pacheco underneath and he’ll get it out to the 34 before he’s tracked down. A sevenyd pick up and it moves the chains. I call this quarterback’s best friend. Some call it a safety valve, some call it automatic, but it’s sure nice as a quarterback when you got a trusty running back over the middle of the field that you can depend on. [Applause] Short pass brought in and they’re going to bring him down just on the other side of midfield. It’s a gain of 17 on that one and the Chiefs are going to have a first down. Kansas City. I can’t tell you how nice it is to have a big trustworthy tight end in the passing game. Such great size to have and he forces those defenses to find a way to try to match up when they can’t. Throwing on first down. Momes has it in close and he’s able to reach the 40 on that play. Sure. Nice to see them looking for their tight ends in the passing game. Such great size to have out there. It really forces defenses to try to find a way to defend them along with everybody else. Offense with an enviable spot to be in second and inches. Running out of the gun with Pacheco and he’ll pick up enough to move the chains. A sevenyd gain. That’s another Kansas City Chiefs first down. First and 10 at the 32 yd line. That’s certainly a spot where you could be more aggressive, Kate, if you wanted to take your shots. But some coaches, even the Boulder ones, will take the safe play first when they get it from time to time. No third down required now. Pocket isn’t holding up. They’re able to drop him. It’s a sack on first down. We’ll see if it changes the play they go with now on second. This defense been trying like mad to do anything to disrupt the rhythm. get the QB off his spot. It’s got to be a massive relief to see their efforts paid off on that play. After the sack, defense has got to be feeling good. Here comes second and 12 to the air. Momes left side. And it’s caught by Rice and he’s going to be stopped, but not before he gets it down to the 14. An excellent gain. 20 yds there and that’s going to move the sticks. So many cool fundamentals on display right there, Kate. Look the ball into your hands. Number one, don’t turn your eyes away from it before it gets to you. And then when you’ve got that catch secured, snap that head forward and find that space up field to turn a good play into a great play from the red zone now. cut near the goal line and it’s another first down on this drive. Man, this time they’re into first and goal. I love throwing on first down and when you see a first down pass just like that, it’s taking advantage of a matchup you plan for. You go out and execute. This offense in position now it’s first and goal back to throw. Momes catches made in close and he’s in for the Kansas City touchdown. The Chiefs take a lead just before the end of the third. Travis Kelce the touchdown. So that Brock an important score here as they move out in front. You know Kate, this is the time of the game where fatigue starts to set in every once in a while. But that right there was a determined looking drive. They were not going to be denied and able to score and take the lead. But to try the point after extra points sent right down the middle and the Chiefs push their lead to three. 27 commanders 24 [Applause] But on now to kick this one away on the return. This is McCaffrey making some progress here. And he showed some nice bursts on that run back, didn’t he? Getting them all the way out to their own 40. When you get contributions like that out of your kickoff returner, it is such a boost to an offense. This is about showing no fear, hitting the lane hard, a determined run back, and setting your offense up with great field position. Commander starting out in a good spot here as they get set. First and 10 now. Daniels off the play action. [Applause] He’ll step up and there he goes. Jaden Daniels on the scramble. It’s a gain of eight brings us. All right, we’ve reached the final quarter of Monday Night Prime Time. It’s Commander football and they need to get to work here. They’re trailing late. Offense is sent. This is second and two. They send him left out of the slot. Second down give to Krosky Merritt. Defender gets to him right around the line. It’s going to be marked as no gain. So Brock, that means third down coming up. Job one of so many DTackles in this league is eat up space. Don’t get moved off your spot. But the difference makers, they just not only eat the space, they eat those runners, too. Third and just two to go. Here he is on third and short. He’ll make a bid for it on the ground. And this one does not go far. That is such a good play defensively. A play you could take a whole bunch of pride in. Not only stopping the passing game, but the effort to get to the quarterback before he could scramble for the first. Down a score. They’re going to go for this on fourth down. Desperation time here. Cox misses lane and he’s brought down after pushing to that 35 yd line. Left the offense out there on fourth down Brock and look at the result. A big gain. And they got 15 and the first so close to getting off the field. But the fourth down conversion keeps that defense out there. That was their shot to end this possession to sit on the bench to get their breath. But now they’re going to have to buckle down and force another fourth down. Here’s Crosky Merritt off the option and all he can get is one yard. Ran that right into the defensive front. One thing I could say positive about the execution of that playd at least he didn’t go back and at the Chiefs 34 yd line. Last run only gained a yard. That means it’s second and nine. Play action now. Daniels pocket isn’t holding up. They’re able to drop it. And that pushes him back. Third down coming up. Hey, I understand that call. You try to get play action to get away from the rush. The problem is this defense has just been relentless. [Applause] Will this drive continue? Here comes third down. Third and long for him here. It’s in or no, they dropped another one. Picks dropped on backto back plays, Brock, but it does force a fourth down. That is just a nice stretch of some reps there defensively and really one of the areas when you watch college game to the NFL game that there is a vast difference. That’s the tightness of coverage. These windows of opportunity are small and they could not find a completion. And this is the punt you want every time. He bounces out of bounds and sticks him inside their own 10. The Chiefs are out once again. Their offense led by Patrick Mahomes. And he has continued to own this defense and keep on throwing that football partner, making this performance one that he’s going to remember. Uh, but as you like to say, the defense would probably rather forget. Now, Kansas City looks settled in and ready. Here we go. First and 10. Drive begins with a run by Pacheco. Well, I’m not seeing the signal for a safety, Brock, but he did not dodge it by much. That run just gets back to the line. That’s kind of yardage. It’s not going to kill this drive on the first play, but it does put you a little bit behind schedule. Now, second down becomes critical cuz nobody wants a three and out. Last run, not a lot of help, Brock. Nine to go now on second down. Right back to BCO. And once again, he doesn’t manage much before getting brought down. A gain of about three. So, a third of what they needed. Third and six coming up. brings up third. This close to your own goal line, they really don’t want to risk a sack. That means, well, one option, run it and buy whatever breathing room you can. This is a tough spot to punt. Got to convert here on third down. He’s going to try to drop it in deep right. Big game downfield. And he’s going to be brought down here at the 42. They get 37 on the play and it’ll be first down Kansas City. First down. First and 10 at the 42 yd line. The analytics are pretty clear. It’s hard to move the ball in this league with short little dinks and dunks. You’ve got to get the explosive chunk. You got to get the big play and that throw to the outside that gets the job done. Hulled in by Rice and he’s tackled for a short gain. Not met many receivers in my life that don’t love the spotlight, but you got to earn your place there. The easy way to do it catches just like that. Going up into double coverage and making the play anyway. Second down now. Seven to go. [Applause] Out of the gun, it’s Momes. Catch made and he’s going to be hauled out on a gain across midfield down inside the 45 yd line. Pick up of 12 on that play. And the Chiefs are going to have a first down. Sometimes you’re looking to push the ball down the field. As I said before, the crumbs lead to a cookie. And you never go broke taking a profit and those big tight ends will often find you those easy checkown yards. And second down’s going to be a good bit tougher. He can’t even get back to the line. This play loses yards. This is one of those situations, Kate, where I watch the body language of the running back because it’d be very easy for him to raise his hands up, look to the sideline in his O line, and go, “What am I supposed to do there?” There was nothing, no time at all to try and escape and react. Instead, it goes backwards. Pressure coming from Holmes. brought in and he’s able to reach the 40 on that play to Maris Brown. It’s a gain of seven. Brings up third and six. Nice drive here. It’s up to eight plays as they get sent for third and six. [Applause] Throw here. Third down. He gets it to Rice and he’ll get this down to the 33 yd line. Call it seven yds on the play and that’s enough for the first down. That’s another Kansas City Chiefs first down. Double coverage dealb breaker for a lot of QBs Brock, but less so when it’s target you trust. You know, it’s interesting, Kate. even 20 something years ago watching Marvin Harrison and Pton Manning work. Every defense would go into every game trying to double cover him, but yet those two, well, like we just saw right there, just got it done regardless. Hits him on the out route and he’s in for the Kansas City touchdown. The Chiefs make it a ninepoint advantage. Travis Kelce the touchdown. His second scoring catch of the game. That play really had all the elements you’re looking for from a tight end, showing that he can stretch that field with your route check. Secure the catch quickly become a runner check and finally go finish that drive off and celebrate with your homeboys. But to try the point after [Applause] the point after splits the upright is good and the Chiefs make it a 10-point ball game. Score Chiefs 34, Commanders 24. [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] on now to kick this one away. Kansas City Samuel now to return it. Jukes away from one coverage team gets him down at the 26 yd line. The Commanders all set to regain possession and they just saw that lead stretch out to a two-core margin now. Really makes this a must score series late. And Kate, you know I believe this. You can never play this game in a state of desperation, but a state of urgency got to be a skyhigh right now. All right, the Washington offense is set. Here comes first and 10. Out of the gun, Daniels pocket isn’t holding up. They’re able to drop him. And after one play, this drive might already be in trouble. That’s going to push him back for second down. I think we’ve reached a point of the game, Kate, where I got to make my PSA. Protect the quarterback and quarterback. Protect yourself. [Applause] So things not looking good after that sack. 15 to go here on second down. Shotgun snap to Daniels. Flushed out of the pocket now. Here he goes. They strike for 23 yds. And that’ll be good for a Washington first. It’s a gain of 23 yds. That’s good for a Washington first down. It’s a gain of 23 yds. First down, Commanders. Man, I don’t ever want to be a defensive coordinator. They do so many things right to take away the pass and then what happens? Well, you get a quarterback that lowers his head, gashes the defense with one of the biggest runs of the game. You take away the pass, but you can’t stop the QB run. Crossky Merritt on first down. Not the way to begin a new set of downs, Brock, as they drop it behind the line. Stay on schedule. S O S. We talk about it all the time offensively. You’ve got to stay on schedule and a run like that puts you now so far behind the sticks. Going to take some superhuman effort. Now on second down, offense to the line. Second down. From the gun, it’s Daniels. has him on the quick hitter and he’s going to get this up to the 45 before he’s brought down. The goal of that little drag route is to get him for at least a minimal game with space to add after that. That picked up a good chunk and it was nearly a big play. A less than ideal third and eight here. Here he goes. Third and long throwing the out complete and he’s able to cross midfield before going out. You know, I I like the completion. You never turn down a completion. That’s just not the right throw to make in that spot to move the chains. Down in the fourth. Offense staying out there for this. Daniels back to throw. He’s running for it and he’s tackled with a first down yardage. You know before the snap, you know, right before the snap, you may have to take off if the read isn’t there. That was a great adjustment. Made at the perfect time for the first down. First and 10 at the 43 yd line. Let’s see how they attack this first down. Brock from the 43 to throw Daniels. Oh, he’s going for it again. and he’s tackled after gaining a handful. He made something out of that play for them. Everyone so concerned with defending the pass, they didn’t quite keep tabs on what he was doing as a QB. And it gave him just enough room to run. After a good pickup, they’ve got second and four. Daniels defender arrives right as the ball does and the hit knocks it free. Incomplete. Terry Mccclure. That was Terry McLuren on the target. And now they need to get four on third down. Hey, I get it. If any of their pass catchers have what it takes to beat double coverage, it’s him. The kids would say he’s him. That defense knew it’s why they doubled him and knocked it away. Third and short. Daniels short pass brought in and he’s able to get this to the 32 before going down. A gain of four yd. It’s a gain of four there. And the Commanders will have a first. Time and again, receivers will tell their quarterbacks, “Just give me a chance. Just give me a chance. Just throw it up and give me the opportunity.” Well, in this case, with even two defenders trying to cover that wide receiver, couldn’t get it done. And he’ll just throw this away, Brock. And that’s going to bring us to our two-minute warning. That takes us to the two-minute warning here in KC. Commanders got to score in a hurry. to throw again on second down. Daniels bails out of the pocket quick. This is going to take him into the red zone. He’s down to the 16 yd line. The Commanders take a timeout. They’re first. And they still have two available for them as we approach the end of this game. I can promise you that was the goal from the moment he took off. He kept his eyes locked on the chains. It’s almost like he had a Spidey sense. He knew exactly where to get in order to move the sticks and get that critical first down. Need to work as quick as you can here, Brock. Two timeouts left. Down two scores. It’s first down. Throwing now. Daniels from the clock. Bucket isn’t holding up. They’re able to drop him. [Applause] Expect the defense to be coming again here after that sack. It is second and 16. Mario finds a man right side and he’s short of the first after a mild gain. The goal of running that drag route is to get it to him for at least a minimal gain with space to add after that but picked up a good chunk and there was nearly room to add even more. On third down, Chiefs going with a nickel. Here he is to throw. Oh, he’s going to run for it. And this drive is going to continue. He’s taken down at the two on third down. And they’ve got themselves a first and goal. As much as you like to find a completion and get the ball out of your hands, when a play breaks down, you got to be able to make a play with your legs. His offense counts on his ability to evade pressure and occasionally make plays just like that. The shot to the end zone is incomplete. for didn’t see a whole lot of room to fit that pass in. Brock, throwing into double coverage. How how’s coach going to feel about that one? Yeah, that’s a no no. Uh yeah, I experienced that as a player and now as a coach, please don’t do that again. So, the incompletion on first here is second and goal. Here’s Mario now. And this is cut for a score. And we are not done here yet. Complete to Debo Samuel. Touchdown Washington. Well, they definitely wanted to get that one out quick, Brock. They did just that. And it ends in six. We hear it all the time, but it is so true, Kate. This is a game about matchups. And when you see a throw that quick, it really was determined pre- snap. It was great design and tremendous execution. And now for the point after and crucially to bring things within a field goal. And he connects there. So now another kick from him. A field goal to tie this game in the fourth. 34 Commanders 31. [Applause] So everything comes down to this onside kick with less than a minute to go and the Chiefs are able to make that recovery. That should lock up this winovered by the Chiefs. No question they wanted the ball back late, but you don’t see many of these recovered by the kicking team in the NFL. You see even fewer recovered when they’re actually expecting it like they certainly were right there. The Chiefs are out once again. Their offense led by Patrick Mahomes. And he’ll be happy to keep letting it fly as much as he has all game. Look at these numbers. They show just how effective he’s been in captaining this offense. Into the victory formation they go, Brock, here on first down, the Chiefs in a victory formation here as they take a knee. [Applause] So score this a win for the Chiefs. And finally, Brock, they can exhale and take a few breaths because uh I don’t imagine any of them were breathing easy during that one with how close this game was. Them or us, we’re both all of us. D all of the above. It is so hard, Kate, to match the adrenaline surge they feel right now and that they felt at every major turn throughout the second half. There’s just something about a close game, the intensity that’s there in every moment that you love to experience as a player and that you hope in all these moments you can execute so you’re the one celebrating and riding that wave of emotion. So, that’ll do it for this one with Brock Huard. I’m Kate Scott. It’s a win for the Chiefs. As we say, so long from Kansas City. [Applause] Heat. Heat.
