Rich Eisen on Mike McDaniel & the Miami Dolphins’ Chances to Actually Salvage Their Season
We just for our uh radio audience um on the TV side showed Mike McDaniel’s first appearance on this program when he phoned in um he was just named the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins. We went over the favorite coaching cliches we we have on this program and he said I’m going to do this in the first press conference at the combine and at the end I stood there looking at him. He saw me and at the end I was like is he going to do it or is he not? It’s okay if he doesn’t. I mean, I know he promised to do it, but he’s still a head coach in the NFL. And then he just nailed it right down one after another after another. I stepped out. We high-fived. That was the end of that. So, I knew he just had a certain special way about him that he would get the joke and actually use his uh platform as head coach in the NFL uh at one point for a gag. And and anybody that that does things for the gag, I’m always appreciative of it. My favorite thing about that too is you like excusing yourself through the crowd. You’re like, “Pardon me, excuse me, excuse me.” Yeah. And then high-fived him and then and then left the scene sort of like you didn’t know when to get out. Like a stanza. With all due respect, now listen though, um things are not going so well for Mike McDaniel this year, but he’s won three of four. And the one loss um cost the general manager the job, but not him. And word is is that Steven Ross plans to keep Mike McDaniel in the job. And at 4-7 right now on a buy, the Dolphins next games, I’m going higher register. I understand that. But the Dolphins next games um after their buy is home for New Orleans and then at the Jets and they have a chance to go to Pittsburgh on a Monday night in week 15 having won four in a row. The chance to get to 500. That’s in the ether right now. Yeah. And you know, Kurt Warner said on our program on the uh pregame show that started 4 in the morning Pacific you up um that Tua does things in the McDaniel offense that’s as good as any other quarterback in the NFL in this offense. That this offense is actually perfect for him. In the same way that I’m saying, hey, you get drafted, you got to have a coach that believes in you and then models an offense after your best skill set. And Tua can perform well in this offense. So, it makes sense if you’re tied to Tua the next year, the guy who’s got the offense that’s kind of perfect for him, you keep him, too. And I know that’s what some Dolphin fans don’t want to hear is that they they they have already a no confidence in this guy. But listen, they’re on a buy. You come back, you get healthy in the spots you need to, and then you’re taking on two otherwise last place teams that are looking at their draft position or for some players playing for their jobs, which makes them dangerous, but still beatable. And he’s still Mike McDaniel got it in him to have fun at a press conference. Did you see how he snuck into Ali Gordon’s press conference? Gordon who scored a touchdown in this game. He snuck into the second row of the press conference and asked the final question of Ali Gordon a second. Talk a little bit about how well you’re coached. I mean, this is great. That’s pretty good. Roll it. What’s up, coach? Talk a little bit about uh how well you’re coached. Uh you know, um I would say that uh I feel like I’m coached as well. you know, uh, might be a little bumps in the road, but I feel like but, you know, I feel like I can talk to y’all about anything, come mess with y’all. So, I feel like everything cool with us. We good. Keep it light, which is definitely important. And I understand fans are like, I don’t find us funny. Our season’s lost. Unless it’s not. I was just going to say, are they out of it? I’m telling you, it’s they’re a higher registered team right now. two winnable games and then they go into Pittsburgh and see what happens. Yep. So they’re seven and seven maybe if they win all those and then last and let Chips fall. Let’s see who after that after that game they’re home against Cincinnati. Currently a Sunday night game that I’m imagining if you keep quiet you’ll hear the sound of a flex. Um then they’re home for Tampa at New England baby. Oh yeah. Hey and you might be you might we’ll be resting at that point. I’m And you’re not being mature. I know. I mean, maybe a month ago I would have said that, but I would be joking. Unless Vable’s got any anything like uh Bellich check in him, which is like we’re playing them all. Isn’t didn’t Wes Welker get hurt in a week 17 meaningless? He did in Houston, which probably cost him the Super Bowl. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. All i know is we will beat the crap out of the Jets AGAIN for sure because the Jets STINK🎉finsup
I find it necessary… the season is lost!!! Have fun while you can and definitely when you win.
The issue with identifying McDaniel as a good coach, you need to differentiate the roles of head coach from run game coordinator. Mike may be a good run game coordinator, but he sucks as a head coach. He has a losing record against teams over .500. He calls timeouts in the first series of a game for two weeks in a row. The fundamentals are bad and the players run the locker room. If McDaniel wants to be a comedien, may e he should do that. It seems like he just needs attention because he was abandoned by his father and grew up an only child.
Seasons gone but maybe Tua and McDaniel get another shot
I love having Mike McDaniel as the coach. I would be deeply saddened by the team moving on from him and, frankly, may move on from being a fan of the team. I haven't cared about the dolphins as much as I have with Mike at the helm since Marino was on the team.
I don't second guess, I don't know enough to do that. All I know is that I am Dolphin Fan and have been one since JOE AUER RAN FOR A TOUCHDOWN. And will never stop.
Ahh yes. The annual season ain't over yet hype train, just to miss the playoffs and get a mid rd 1 pick. Not wishing for losses, im praying they don't extend this thing another year. But deep down I know they will bc its already bought and paid for. Dolphins am I right?
TUA is the real problem , he just faints and drops to the ground when the pocket begans to collapse
I've been a Dolphins since 1970, McDaniel should stay.
Mike will be here as long as tua is here. Plain and simple
I love Mike and I think we are going to do as well as we can all things considered. Tyreek being gone for the season speaks huge.
It's going to be extremely difficult for the Dolphins to get in the playoffs but it has to be that way because they lost so many games prior so if they can't run the table they don't deserve to be in the playoffs anyway
This team really should’ve be been 6-4 or 7-3 if you have watched all dolphins games then you understand why
I thought it was funny …
Consistency is the key. I like Mike – but I can’t take the inconsistency. He and Tua are well matched. The offense is not good enough when we are reliant on 1 or 2 players – why are there almost no other players with more than 2 catches on this offense? Do NONE of them ever get open? Why do we have to take timeouts SO often? Why aren’t we getting those 3rd and 4th and short runs into the end zone? Why does Mike always have to get cute with the play calling – like he’s SURE the other guy is onto him for calling the most predictable play – so go AWAY from strengths? He’s high variance – and that’s great as an acquaintance but not great as a coach.
10-7
If he gets fired, I'm ok with that. I would just want my Giants to make him the new OC next year. Would do that in a heartbeat
Chris Greer gone BIG issue now gone. Ross is deep pockets which is great for facility and optics, but dude is SOFT as SNUGGLES step aside dude and let your daughter take over hopefully, she takes key notes from the COLTS. McPoindexter still has to go dude should have kicked the field goal which tells me he hasn't learned a damn thing.
If the dolphins go 8-9 while being incredibly injured, why would you fire the head coach
I always felt it was hard for a soft spoken man to get pure athletes to perform.
McDaniel been doing too much these last few weeks 😂 but they’re winning so I’ll be quiet until they lose again..
The media has a fascination with mike McDaniels that I'll never understand. Miami will never anything of significance. Tua and McDaniels both need to go
Rich stop the BS the NFL after one year caught on to McDaniel offense
Did you watch the Washington game?
Lovely guy, no longer want him as our head coach. Anyone who fails to kick a field goal at the end of that commanders game has no HC sense. He almost gifted the game to a Washington B team. It was luck.
We are giving him credit for possibly getting to. 500???
As a Buffalo Bills fan I pray in the name of Jesus that the ownership of the Miami Dolphins keeps Mike McDaniel and Tua. Amen.
Regardless of how the Dolphins end this season, Mike McDaniel needs to go (let's be real, there's no shot they are realistically making the playoffs). The thing is, I don't hate Mike McDaniel, he's been a fun personality and a creative coach, but he's not a leader of men and he's pretty much given up on the team.
As a dolphins fan, I freaking love Mike McDaniel, and I really hope that it all works out, but I’m not sure if he’s going to make it beyond the season because football has to be the most important thing
Most teams lose & get a top 10 draft picks Miami loses, loses fail a season bad but win just enough to get a 18-20 draft picks that's a professional losing team & even when they lose & get a #1 draft picks they take a Oline man in a division where Brady was on fire cough (Matt Ryan) that's how it's done super losing team
