MAYHEM: Islanders OUTLAST Dallas Stars as Mikko Rantanen’s HIT IGNITES NHL Safety Discussion

And again, thanks to everyone who helped make the Locked on Podcast Network, the number one sports podcast network. We couldn’t have done it without you. What a crazy game. We have got so much to talk about. The Islanders hold on to for a 3-2 win and it looked like the Stars had tied it with less than a second to go. There was some questionable calls, some uh possible suspensions coming to star players. We’ll break it all down for you, try to make sense of it, and have our key takeaways from the game. We’ll also have our hero and go to the game, and we’ll have our weekly farm and prospects report. All that coming up as we talk about the future of the Islanders as of today. What a big win for the New York Islanders. They end up with a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars. And first of all, you win a game on the road in Dallas. A team that was on a fivegame winning streak that was, you know, had the best power play in the league is beyond the shadow of a doubt a Stanley Cup contender. You go into this game with your backup goalie and yet somehow the Islanders pull off a 3-2 win, but it wasn’t without controversy. Dallas appears to tie the score with less than 1 second left, but the referees get it right. They review it and they determine that there was goalender interference. No question that somebody did indeed bump into David Riddick in his crease before the puck arrived and that prevented Riddick from getting into position to make that save. that call was absolutely correct and you know it was such a dramatic finish and the fans in Dallas were obviously not happy and yet when you break down all the things that happened in this game, the controversial calls, the possible suspension coming up, the injury obviously to Alexander Romanov, we got to break it all down. So again, the game ended in controversial fashion, but I think they definitely got that call right. There’s no question that a Dallas player was in the crease and interfered with David Riddick. Riddick, to his credit, played a really strong game. 22 saves in 24 shots. And the Islanders, to their credit, played a really smart hockey game as well because what they essentially did is they were outplayed in the first period. They hung in there. They got out of the first period all even at 000. played better in the second, got out of the second period even at 1-1 and then managed to come back and get a big win and took a 3-1 lead and held on. And look, let’s let’s break down some of these controversies. Bo Horvat was there were no penalties first of all in this game until almost seven minutes into the third period and that’s when everything just starts to go a little bit crazy. So Bo Horvat is being tricked on a play. his stick hits Oscar Bach and he ends up with a double minor and a 10-minute misconduct. Now, if you watch replays of this play, the play, look, I understand the NHL rule, and the rule is you’re responsible for your stick at all times. So technically because blood was drawn was a double minor for high sticking the right call. Yeah, it was. However, the the the high stick was initiated because Bach took down Horvat and tripped him up. There was no call on that. Both referees did not call a penalty. The linesmen made the call. After the next whistle, they reviewed it. They saw the blood. They made the call. But then they also gave Bo Horvat a 10minute misconduct. Now, we don’t know the reason why actually that a 10-minute misconduct was called against Bo Horvat, but I’m going to go with the Bull Durham rule. And if you haven’t seen the movie Bull Durham, basically to make a long story short, Bo Horvette must have said something to the referees that resulted in this 10-minute misconduct. And I I have to say that misconduct call, whatever he said, it better have been really really bad. Okay? Uh because you then with literally 13 minutes and 12 seconds left in the third period take the Islanders best forward or if not their best certainly one of their two best forwards and you take him off the ice for the rest of regulation time which ended up being the rest of the game. So, I mean, it had to be something so egregious that he said or did. Did he push a referee? We didn’t see anything resembling anything physical, but whatever he did, it had to be something pretty egregious or I have to criticize the referees for just being a little too quick with that 10-minute misconduct because that is a gametering penalty. Now, the Islanders get fortunate. How? At that point in the game, they’re up two to one. Horvat had the go-ahead goal early in the third. And then short-handed, Kyle Palmary, a great short-handed unassisted goal. And then shortly after that, like what 11 seconds or so after, 12 seconds after that, Jamie Ben high sticks Scott Mayfield and that takes 2 minutes off of that 4minute power play. Remember, every day, and I mentioned it yesterday, the Stars had the number one or number two power play in the league coming into this game. A 4-minute power play would have been a disaster. Instead of the Stars tying it, the Islanders get the shorty. Ben takes the penalty. They play four on four. Nobody scores. The Islanders kill off the rest of the power play. Jason Robertson ends up scoring a goal with a little with a minute 59 left in the third period to make it 3-2. And then again you get the controversy. Mo Rantin chasing a loose puck behind the Islanders goal. A definite boarding call. Fiveminute major. Alexander Ramanov face first hits the boards. Hits the glass. He was down on the ice for a long, long time. Ranton gets a fiveminute boarding major and a game misconduct. And I have to say, Mo Rantnan is almost certainly going to hear from the NHL Department of Player Safety. That is a suspendable hit. It is exactly what the NHL does not want. Now, I am not going to say that I thought Mo Rantin intentionally tried to injure Alexander Romano. Was it a illegal hit? Yes. Was it a dirty hit? Yes. Does it deserve a suspension? Absolutely. But I don’t think he intended to injure him. I think he was hustling, trying to make a play in the, you know, closing seconds of a close game. I don’t think Rantin is is that kind of player who’s intentionally trying to injure anybody. But does he deserve a minimum of a two or three fivegame suspension and and the maximum fine? Absolutely. That is a hit from behind. The old adage when you’re especially when you’re near the boards, if you can read the name on the back of the jersey, you don’t make the hit. Well, he certainly could read Ramanov on the back of that jersey. And the hope obviously is that Alexander Ramanov is not seriously hit. You look at that, you think about concussion. You think about possibly a cheekbone or an orbital bone being injured. You think about his neck, you think about his shoulders. There are a lot of possible uh injuries. We will hopefully be updated on Romanov’s status at some point in the very near future and obviously we’ll keep you up to date on that here on Locked on Islanders. A scary moment. Romanov clearly in pain, shaken up, needed help to get back up, was down for a long time. And we wish Alexander Romanov a complete and speedy recovery. And I’m going to say this straight up. Mo Ranton, one of the most talented players in the NHL, a star. It should not influence his suspension. You treat this like it was Joe Blow, a fourthline journeyman, making the same play. The only thing is you have to check out, you know, what is Rantin’s history. Does he have uh previous incidents? Has he been suspended before? And you maybe add a game or take away a game depending on the history. But ultimately, you got to be fair. Whether it’s Mo Ranton or anybody else on the ice, that play is the textbook definition of a suspension being deserved. Wow, what a crazy finish, but a big win for the New York Islanders. We’ll have some more key takeaways from this game. We’ll have our hero and go to the game and a whole lot more coming up next on today’s Lockon Islanders podcast. Today’s episode is brought to you by Rouette. Let’s be real, making excuses doesn’t solve anything. We’ve heard them all before. It’s just stress. All right, let’s try to un untangle everything that happened in this game. Let’s start with the beginning. Cal Richie scores his first goal as an Islander. He opened the scoring midway through the second period, 10 and a half minutes in off a nice give and go with Anthony Duclair. Good to see the fourth line getting on the board and it’s been great to see Cal Richie get on the board because Richie has played solid defense. He has not contributed a lot of offense. He’s, you could see at the NHL level, he’s still kind of a little, I’m not going to say tentative, but he’s trying to make sure he doesn’t make a bad mistake. He’s trying to stick to basics, and this goal hopefully boosts his confidence a little bit in his offense. So great to see Richie get off the schneide, get that second career NHL goal, but first as an Islander, and that was uh certainly big. And then how about Kyle Palmary getting a short-handed goal that ends up becoming the game winner. That one was huge. and the Islanders, you know, it ends up being the margin of victory for the New York Islanders. So, yeah, big big goal by Palms. And I’ll tell you, the Islanders are a very dangerous team short-handed. Amil Heinman, the bad news, his streak of scoring the first goal of the game three games in a row did indeed come to an end. But the good news is he played well, led all forwards in ice time, picked up a key assist, and blocked three shots, which is not something you necessarily see from a forward. JG Pou and Ryan Pock and Alexander Romanov also uh excuse me, Romanov blocking three shots in this game as well among defenseman. And then Pacio uh among forwards also with Heinaman. So, good to see Heinaman continuing to contribute, continuing to play well for the New York Islanders. David Riddick comes up big and I I’ll tell you it uh it ultimately was an important win because here we go. We are now six games into a sevengame road trip and the Islanders are five and one. And you know the thing I love about this game and this win is that the Islanders started slowly. They were clearly outplayed in the first period. But this is not the first time this team is finding ways to hang around. Riddic kept them in the game, kept them even, and they, you know, rode out the the the part of the game where they were being outplayed, kept it close, in this case, kept it 000, and then played their game and found a way to win it. So the resilience, the stick tuitiveness, the ability to overcome a slow start, all of that, a big reason for this win. And now the Islanders on this road trip. They beat Vegas. They beat the Rangers. They beat the Devils. They play Colorado toeto- toe. Beat Utah. And now, I know I have the order wrong, but and now they end up beating the Dallas Stars. This team has really done well on this road trip and they have a chance to go six and one on this road trip on Thursday night when it ends in Detroit. And at least they’re back in the Eastern time zone for that one. Hero and GOAT of the game. Wow. Uh, I’m going to go with Kyle Palmary as the hero. He gets the game winner short-handed. There was a little karma involved in that after a questionable penalty call that the Islanders turn it around, get a shorty, and then you get the the call the other way that takes two minutes out of the four-minute power play. So, a little cosmic justice there uh in that one. Karma, right? Okay. and uh go to the game. You know, I usually would go I I could go with the referees for the for some of the calls, but ultimately I I’m I am going to to give the goat of the game penalty uh or the go of the game tag in this one. It I it absolutely has to go to Mo Ranton for that cheap shot. And you know, look, Tony D’Angelo made a terrible play on the first Dallas goal. He pinched. He got burned. We all know D’Angelo, his defense, not particularly good, never has been, probably never will be, but I I gotta give it to Ranton. And again, don’t think it was intentional, but boy, that was a cheap shot. and he deserves a suspension coming up. But a big big win for the Islanders and what a great road trip this has been. And uh wow, they can close it out in style Thursday uh against a conference opponent that they may end up battling for one of those wild card spots. So big game. Got to keep this going. But I like what I’m seeing from this team right now. All right, we have got more to get to. We have our weekly farm and prospect report. And for our Islanders birthday of the day, we have a winger from Rochester, New York, who played with the Islanders in the mid to late 201. Let’s see if you can guess who that is. We appreciate you for all of your viewing and listening, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Time for our weekly farm and prospects report. And again, thanks to Josh for all of his uh help getting this package together every week. We uh always appreciate that. Rough week for the Bridgeport Islanders. We always start in Bridgeport. Uh they played three games. It started off last Wednesday with a 54 shootout loss. Uh the early morning, you know, 10:30 game against the Wilsar Scranton Penguins. And it was a lot of action. Uh you had a fight and then uh just 35 seconds in you had a goal by Cole Mcard and that was a quick lead for the Islanders. But you know, Adam Beckman scores on a pass from Matthew Majio. That was good. Mio then with a five uh game assist streak, seven assists in five games. But at the end of the day, a goal by Isaiah George. Uh that kept the Islanders in it. But 38 seconds left. Joey Larson ties it, deflects a shot from George to send it to overtime, but it goes to a shootout and the Islanders couldn’t pull it out. Meanwhile, another game against the Penguins. This one a couple of days later on the road. And uh this one ends in a 5-3 loss. Uh Cam Berg let off the scoring that put the Islanders up 1 to nothing. And then Alex Jeff scored on the power play to make it two to nothing. But the Islanders couldn’t hold on and they lose 5 to3. And then the third game of the week, a loss to the Rochester Americans by a 5-3 score. H they fell behind early in the first period three to one. Managed to tie it at three, but it just wasn’t enough. Cam Feing uh getting one of the goals and then uh Matthew Hymore scores one. Uh well, excuse me. He gets a shot. Mark Gatkam puts in the rebound and Julian Goautier ends up scoring in his first game back. So, not enough, but an 02 and one week basically for the Bridgeport Islanders. They are now in sixth place in the Atlantic Division standings, 58 and two on the season. Right now, Cole McWard and Matthew Majio tied for the team lead with 11 points. Uh Joey Larson leads the team with seven goals. He and Alex Jeff and Matthew Hymore all have 10 points. Marshall Warren has nine points and he’s only played 10 games for Bridgeport in part because he did spend time up with the big club. Marcus Hogberg a 281 goals against an 899 save percentage. Parker Gahhagen a 345 goals against and an 875 save percentage. Uh only two games this weekend for the Bridgeport Islanders. They’re at home Friday afternoon at 3:00. Well, excuse me. I’m I’m ahead a week. They are on the road, both of these games. Friday night in Rochester, uh, to take on the Americans. Saturday night in Syracuse to take on the Crunch. That’s a 7:00 Eastern time start. You can watch those games on AHL TV. Meanwhile, uh let’s talk a little bit more about some of the other prospects. And again, just so great. Uh Isaiah George did miss a little bit of time with an upper body injury. He’s now dayto day. Liam Foody out week to week with a lower body injury. Cole Eisermanman back playing for Boston University. So that is really good. And oh yes, Dennis Gud Bo, he is still playing in Sweden. He was traded uh to Carl’s Crona HK. Hope I’m coming close to pronouncing that. And uh Henrik Tikkin, by the way, now playing for Worcester of the ECHL. He had a 32 save shutout on Saturday. So always you always like to see you know those those players just the goalies coming up with a big performance like a shut out. So happy with that and uh again good to see these prospects playing well a goal for Danny Nelson this week. Uh but it was a fairly quiet week for a lot of the Islanders prospects. uh except for Tomas Pitin a twogoal four-point week in three games and uh that’s always great to see. So, a lot of these prospects doing their thing across both the miners, college hockey and even uh I if you think about it uh over in Europe. So again, good to see it and uh keep it up. We’ll keep you up to date every Wednesday on our weekly farm and prospect report. And thanks again to Josh for his help. Time now for our Islanders birthday of the day. We’re going back a few days. Sunday was the 33rd birthday of former Islanders winger Shane Prince. The Rochester, New York native, a second round pick by the Senators in 2011. Made his NHL debut with Ottawa in 2014 2015, but joined the Islanders midway through the 2015 2016 season. Spent most of 2016 2017 with the Isisles and a little bit of 2017 2018. then went on to play in Switzerland, the KHL, and is still active in the KHL right now. Has four goals in 14 games so far this season and one of his more memorable games as an Islander. Game one of the second round playoff series between the Islanders and the Tampa Bay Lightning uh down in Tampa on April 27th, 2016. Tomas Grace, the goalie for the Islanders, Ben Bishop gets the start for the Tampa Bay Lightning. And uh in this game with the score tied 1-1, our Islanders birthday of the day, Shane Prince scores a goal with 2 and 1/2 minutes left in the first period. Ryan Stro and Brock Nelson with the helpers. And then he scores again with less than 3 seconds left in the period. Ryan Strowman and Brock Nelson again with the helpers. Islanders go on to win this game by a score of five to three. An empty net by Cal Clutterbuck clinches the win. But for Shane Prince, he had two goals. He was a plus one. He had three shots on goal and scored two goals in only 9 minutes and 50 seconds of ice time. That puts the Islanders ahead in the series, one to nothing. Unfortunately, uh it would be their only win in this series. They’d lose the next four and be eliminated. But for Shane Prince, a magic moment, a twogoal playoff game that helped his team earn the first win of this series. Shane Prince is our Islanders birthday of the day. The officiating in Isles games has been ridiculous for quite some time. Horvat only cut the player with his stick due to being tripped by said player. So how is a misconduct justified. Ignominious especially since both refs saw it and didn’t call it. The linesman stopped it for an injury? Are they kidding me I’ve been cut worse by my cats. He was really missed in those final few minutes.
Once again the Islanders barely survive. They are 7-2-1 over their last 10 its crazy. Barzy looks great out there and Schafer drove to the net like a power forward. There is now talk he could make the Olympic squad. I hope not frankly…Players get hurt in that intensity. If players get hurt and on the Canada team and they turn to him I would do all I could to stop it.
Gil… I know fan duel helps pay the bills but you shouldn’t promote gambling- it ruins lives.
Absolutely not – Rantanen was destabilized before the situation, and that led to what happened.
shit game led by bettman's shitty refs letting it get out of hand and heads up their asses officiating. and 24's stickwork led to 96 incidental contact with 28.
but its a W. 35 .911 good, d solid, sp. teams tosses in sh g. that how isles have to w when they don't have to score 4 or more.
next up-first place (yes first place) in atlantic wings. re-match of 7-2 shellacking game.
also isle prospect report-17th pick k. aitchenson was suspended 2 games by ohl for an iffy water throwing incident with a fan. maturity or not?
and fan duel BLOWS. shouldn't be promoted by nhl. and tired of their ads during nhl games and fkn odds and numbers grips on nhl games. nhl needs those mfkrs for viewing interest. only reason waning corrupt uninteresting nfl keeps viewership. fk you gambling heads who enable this shit and ruin the viewing enjoyment for fans that just want to watch the game. that includes you and your gambling head wife too gretz. no scruples scumbag.
'PLEASE GAMBLE, AND GAMBLE LOT. BUT GAMBLE RESPONSIBLY'. Y'ALL fkn SAPS.
Funny how you're conpletely ignoring that Rantanen was TRIPPED by Mayfield before he made contact with Romanov
At this rate of overachievement, especially since the start of this grueling road trip against some of the best teams in the NHL, the ceiling for how far this team can go just this season is getting higher and higher! I would think few opponents would be too eager to face these Isles if the playoffs were going to start tomorrow.
SUSPEND HIM; he INTENTIONALLY did try to. I want him suspended for the WHOLE YEAR; better yet I want him OUT OF THE LEAGUE. 😡
Yeah no. Pulock pushed him in. Got lucky.
Hope the Islander is OK. Hate seeing guys going into the boards like that.
24 ran a little bit of interference on Rantanen and sort of twisted him a bit. Rantanen extended his arms, but you could argue that due to trying to catch his balance. Rantanen doesn't have a history of dirty play.
Nothing easy they have to make you suffer
When Barzel came off the boards with the puck in the final seconds was he tripped causing the turnover ? Looked like it
Definitely goalie interference
Thank god
Team needs an enforcer or 2. Teams are taking too many liberties with the isles. After that hit someone shoukd have been stomping on rantannan. Instead our coach is the one getting angry. This is going to continue for the year. Time for Darche to make a move and quick or else guys like schaefer are going to get hurt
Guess pulock didn’t think of using his hand to swipe the puck away. It should have never gotten to that point. Especially being on a pp
Poor officiating all around. Rabbit ears. You want respect you give respect. 10 minute misconduct awful call. The high stick was preceded by a trip on Horvat which caused the high stick.
LOVING Paddy Roy right now – that's sports baby! Played with a flare of emotions, determination to not be bested, and a desire to defend your teammates. You don't think his team seen that? Seen how Pads has their back? I said early this season on social that this team must play like a (unit), and Roy has 'em doing just that – they are listening to him, running his system to success, playing for each other … playing with pride and heart just like Roy did in his day. Exciting hockey to watch, has you impatient for the next game! 5 and 1 on a grueling roadie is terrific man! Lots to be proud of! ..last night, Roy was yelling at the defensive coach on Dallas' bench in French – my French is weak as an English speaking Canadian but I played the clip for my mother – it was hard to hear but she believes she heard the word "goon" and something to the effects of "dirty player in your day".
Given the suspension given to the Islanders earlier this season for a heck of a lot less, that hit had better result in some games .. JMO
Another gutsy performance against a great team on the road! Hope Romonov is OK we need his physical presence as well. Thanks for the prospect update! LGI
Put Bocvist back in…call up Warren…and please swap out Gatcomb for Cizcikas
Congrats to Stars fans. They've surpassed Leafs and Habs fans as the biggest whiners in the league. Then again, when you lose the conference finals every year and also root for the Cowboys and the University of Texas, you get that way.
March 26 can't come fast enough.
Two bad calls in the last few minutes spoiled an excellent game. We will never know who REALLY should have won.
You should change The name of this podcast is hooked on Homer’s
They were handed a win, they didn't pull anything off.
