These are always so dumb. They don’t count void years. Our defense is expensive because they’re being paid now, because we aren’t in a win-now window.
Don’t get me wrong, I hate Schoen, but this is a moot stat.
The problem is most NFL teams build a defense that pairs well with an explosive offense. When you’re able to score on any given drive, teams are forced to pass more to keep up which makes pass rushers invaluable. The problem is that pass rushers in today’s NFL who can also defend the run well are so rare, so those highly paid edge guys now become a liability when the team goes down early and the opponents can run all over us (30th in yards, 32nd in Y/A).
This season is obviously a wash but I could see this defense and making a huge turnaround next year if our offense with Dart, Leek and Skat coming back healthy can play to their potential and put together a top-10ish offense. Obviously we will also need to find a better coordinator than Bowen (low bar) and hopefully add a few mid-level vets in the secondary who can give us consistent if not spectacular results.
So we are paying our defense over twice as much, as the defending Super Bowl Champs?

NY teams have a bad habit of overpaying mediocre players. Also, the NY Giants defense is ranked 29th in total defense.
It’s fine. It’s only $75 mill per Win.

Our defense should be playing way better, but half the league spending over $125 mil rn makes me feel a tiny bit better
