Bill Simmons proclaims Columbus Blue Jackets ‘most irrelevant franchise in professional sports’

  1. This is funny, because I have no idea who Bill Simmons is either.

I proclaim him the most irrelevant sportsperson in the sportsperson world.

  2. After reading it (crazy, I know) it seems like the title should be “Bill Simmons agrees with Columbus native’s suggestion that his own Blue Jackets could win the title of most irrelevant team”

  3. More coastal elite bullshit. He only cares about basketball and Boston teams. Of course he doesn’t hear anything about us in his bubble. I’m usually a fan of his, but he definitely always seems to think his opinion is shared by all of America.

Edit: actually reading the article, it seems like they concede a few of those points. Probably a bit knee jerky on my part. But still, I always feel like I have to defend the Blue Jackets when they are slandered.

  4. I love the Jackets but honest to God i think its hard to argue otherwise. The Sacramento Kings maybe? Winnipeg or Buffalo?

  5. Yall are delusional if you don’t think he has a convincing argument lol we have a great chance to change that with our current crop of talent. The panthers were like this not that long ago

  6. I like how everyone spent one full season being fake supportive and fake nice because “We care about you and Gaudreau and that’s so sad and tragic” but as soon as it became accepted to shit on us again they went full force.

Every single word of sympathy was performative bullshit last season.

Edit: they have us as a “seller” on the Athletic lumped with Chicago, Calgary, Nashville, San Jose and St Louis

Why? We are right in the mix and playing at a 90 point pace.

  7. It is painful but probably not all that far off. We’ve never drafted and developed a hall of famer. Our peak season was making the 2nd round of the playoffs. We’ve never so much as won our division in 25 years. Our win percentage is around 43%. No real dramatic free agents. Sadly, the biggest story in the history of the franchise is Johnny.

  8. Well, I love the Blue Jackets and I’ve never heard of Bill Simmons so I guess he is the most irrelevant voice in sports commentating?

  9. I mean i like the Blue Jackets and he’s 100% right lol

NHL is the least relevant of the big sports leagues, Jackets are one of the new-ish teams in the league, no HOFers, usually no all star, very little playoff success, very bland branding compared to what the rest of the NHL is doing.

  10. To those of you asking who he is, he was with ESPN for a bit and has his own media platform. He has some hot takes but this isn’t one of them.

  11. It annoys the hell outta me but I mean… ain’t off base. It’s on us to go out and shut em up

Honestly surprised he wasn’t just slobbering about the Celtics

  12. We’ve won one playoff series in 25 years. It’s not a lie. All we can do to change this is to start winning.

  13. I mean, fuck Bill Simmons, but he’s not exactly wrong

Even a team like the Browns are a remarkable laughingstock

But we’re just bad, have almost always been bad, and have rarely even done it in a noteworthy way. What do most people know Columbus for? Players wanting to leave? One fun playoff series win? A player accidentally killing a guy? Losing, losing, losing?

It’s almost like this franchise needs a full reset. Change the name or something, start over.

  14. How are we less relevant than the New Orleans Pelicans or the Charlotte Hornets?

Also, literally this year CBJ hosted an outdoor hockey game which was widely successful according to the NHL. It’s was one the biggest crowds ever to attend a hockey game in human history.

If the Pelicans hosted a basketball game in the NOLA Superdome, would they sell it out? Would it even be close?

This guy is a total goober. Don’t take anything he says seriously.

  15. We took a friend who hadn’t been to a hockey game in over a decade this week. They played a heck of a game, nearly choked, and won in the shootout. The 3 of us had a blast.

As fsr as I’m concerned, ‘We went home laughing with a story to tell’ is the definition of relevance for any sports team. None of them win or lose 100% of the time consistently.

  16. Hello! Jackets fan here.

    This comment is correct.

Michael Arace technically said at first.

It is good that this comment is making rounds on sports media.

The players need to hear it and most importantly the front office needs to hear.

For the past few seasons, the fans have been doing their part to show that this is a viable market that loves this team and loves hockey.

I hope only good comes from this

    Go jackets
