Paul Maurice Updates Florida Panthers Injury Situation on Nov. 19, 2025

A2 had a u barbecuing mishap, but seriously he and and suffered burns. Um he so he’s I’m going to list him as week to week because we don’t have a lot of experience with this and and some of it’s when he comes back and feels comfortable with the equipment on him while we go. It’s not he wasn’t in the hospital overnight. He did get seen by doctors in that vein. Um Schwinter broke his arm. Um, he is very likely going to have surgery. He’s going to see the doctor today. Uh, but that surgery won’t take place for another week. They need to let the swelling go down two to three months. And then Jack De gets the call. He’s healthy, but he’s nervous. Obviously, obviously Ern is nice kid. Is the plan for him to be in the lineup tomorrow? Yeah, he plays tomorrow just as the lines that went today other than Reinhardt will be in tomorrow. And what can he do for you guys? Seems like a guy that can play your style pretty well. Yeah, he’s an interesting player for sure. Uh very bright. There’s I don’t want to throw a handle on him who he’s like cuz that boy that puts a lot of expectation, but he’s very bright. Um he reads the game exceptionally well. He’s got good hands, competitive, quiet. We’ve got other players a little bit like him, but I’m excited to see. I think he’s going to I think he will be coach appreciated necessarily before the fans. So, it won’t be blinding speed or something obviously overt, but he’s in the right spots. Smart guy, he’s competitive guy. Um, and I think he’s going to develop into a really good pro. He’s also got a championship pedigree. A lot of range. Yeah, he’s a leader. You know what I mean? Even in exhibition games, he figured out there were certain we had pretty young lineups. He was vocal. He’s competitive in the game and we think we got a real good one here. What did you learn about him during training? He He might be He might be faster with the puck and than without it. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before. He can accelerate with the puck, which is really really hard to do. Um he picks up the systems right away and all his questions are would be then not basic but fairly advanced. what happens if this off this scheme and he is I think he’s probably a guy who’s been focused on being a hockey player his whole life. He’s very intense, very focused on the game. There’s no distractions. He’s he can stay in the drills straight through all the drills. He does them right every time. If there’s been someone else has made a mistake during the drill, he covers that off, which is I’m excited about his brain and seeing how it it grows. Looks at your injuries and just been one thing after another for you all. Um being able to keep your head above water. You got to feel okay about that. Yeah, that’s the challenge for us right now. And and you have this expectation when you come into training camp that you’re going to put a pretty powerful team on the ice. You understand that, you know, the Nosik injury surprised us. We knew with Matthew was so we had dealt with that mentally and then we have this long-term flux go out and there is a bit of it. And I think that might have been that road trip, right? When when it gets really hard, you’re on the road. We didn’t have a very good road trip. But after that, the surrounding block of games, we won’t be dominant in a lot of the games because of the personnel we come out, but but we’re staying in them. And I think we’re getting better at some areas that maybe we weren’t even great at. We’re forced we’re forced to to adapt our our style of hockey to the players that are in. And but some of that ad adaptation, we get to keep that. That’s the idea. We’re trying to do some things offensively a little differently than we’ve done in the past. Focus on a little more. There’s going to be some growing pains with that. It’ll be 85 instead of 42, 4-1 on some nights. But there’s an awful lot of good. If you can capture, if you can learn some new things, things that you have to learn to survive, and that’s really in some ways what we’re doing is trying to survive. When you get to seven guys out of your lineup, you got a problem. If we can survive that and then learn through the adversity of it eventually, you know, we’re going to have slightly after the trade deadline the biggest movement in the league, we’re going to we’re going to get some players back. Um we we can be we can be a better team than we were going into the playoffs last year if we can learn how to do this. It’s just going to be hard. It’s going to be uncomfortable right now and we got to be good with that. Coach, just to kind of follow up on that, you mentioned a couple weeks ago maybe for the first time in a while focus kind of had to be on adding but not to do so at the detriment of side of the game. How do you feel that process is coming? I I think pretty good. Um our power play has started to show some signs of really getting on track. I mean, you can get on a run and think your power play is good, but it’s not structural. You’re just getting the breaks or the other teams making some early mistakes and now I think our power play is starting to move in the right direction. It’s marrying the two. So when you ever you focus on your defensive game or your offensive game, I think that’s not true. When you focus on your offensive game, you usually lose some defense. And then when you focus on your defensive game, a lot of times you’ll generate more off that, right? And that’s almost the the whole idea of what we’ve done here for three years is really focus on our defensive game and generate we we scored an awful lot of goals in the playoffs last year. But now with the players missing, we’ve got to we’ve got to focus harder on that area. and we have had some slips in our defensive game, but we anticipated that and we just need to keep we’re not going to cut it off and not talk about offense. We got to fix that. That that’s the we can’t give up more because we’re trying to generate more. If we can get that right and that’s the key piece here and we can find a way to generate more and then not not give up more and then add some people back in, we can be we think it can be really good for us. With the success your team has had over the last few years, there’s a thought players have played a lot of games and how they fight through that both emotionally and physically. What’s it like for for a coaching staff where you’ve brought a team to that point defending champs and you’re injuries notwithstanding, you got that grind? It’s real. I think it’s it’s certainly more mental and physical. We tested out better at training camp this year than we did in either of the three previous years. I would say, Matt, I think I felt it more last year in that and then we felt it in the back half of November and I think we played Jersey back to back and they beat us both times and they played well, but we and they weren’t blows. I think both games were tied at two halfway through the game. We were just a little bit behind it and and we just now we probably kind of passed that off. We had we had gone to Finland a couple weeks earlier and we were felt we were behind it a little bit, but I I think that was more real. Where do you find the juice, right? the energy, the excitement. So to contrast, our team perhaps there’s some teams that didn’t make the playoffs last year that have gotten off. They’re excited. They’re wired for every game. They have that. We we don’t a little bit right now, but we went through it last year. For the coaches personally, I think it would be more pronounced if our whole team was here, but we got a lot of work to do right now. It’s kind of kind of slapped you out of sleeping through the first four months of the season. But you got to get to work or you’re not going to get to where you need to get to. So, our injuries have inspired the coaches to to find that energy source and and to get back in. It’s real though. It It is. It’s It’s not a I guess the word attached was hangover. And we wouldn’t accept that after the first after our second year here, after the first time we won, because we felt we could just push through it. And I think we did. I think what what it is is you’ve got to find an energy source when you’re on the cusp and we felt we were after if they’re losing the first one that energy source was that drive to get over the hump and to win. And then the start of last year other teams have an easier have an easier access to that juice to that energy. They’re fired up. I don’t think I don’t think that it’s um the shortened summer. I actually think for our team it’s actually easier for us to stay in shape. And by us clearly, I mean the players. So not it’s easier for the players to stay in shape. Uh they get a little bit of rest. They’re not far off conditioned. They get back in and they also are not going I got five more months I got to go to the gym before the season starts and then another month of training camp. So I think that part mentally is easy for us. But when you look up and there’s 65 games left and you know how heavy and how hard those playoffs are. If I’d be more nervous in some ways right now if we were at our full lineup and we’re going through it. You’re trying to find ways to grind them a little bit but not too much. You got to be but you have a level that you have to play at. And if you don’t get to it, we got to talk about it. We can’t we can’t say, “Hey, we’re waiting for the play.” I don’t We don’t believe you peak here. The opposite. We We got to time it right. You got to get hot at the right time. We haven’t been a very good team in either of our last two marches. Um, and that didn’t affect us. So, we we’re trying to play the best we can. Our job right now is we got to figure out a win in the playoffs with this team we have specifically right here. I would say if we if we get it all right, if everything if we can get this all right and get into the playoffs and then you suffer an elite player going down, we should be able to handle that now. That’s the goal. Did you get a chance to see the classic? Just Addy made me look at him when I walked by my computer. Very nice. You’re going to have a full one on full sweater. Just just the gold. Are the cats all the same size? Yes. Like if Jared bought a sweater, would the cat on George’s sweater be the same size as let’s say a little person? Okay. So, some people have a bigger tactic. Yeah. Got to wear two. Um, but what what do you think 19 the World War II look? I think it’s cool. I think the whole I don’t want them to look the way the normal looks. I don’t want the Rangers to look the normal. I want it to be completely different. it is different colors and then you’ll always recognize that sweater for that event. Uh these things are great. I I’ve been in two or three of them I think now and they are a wonderful break in the season and the outdoor idea is so elemental to hockey especially and it’s I guess you would say growing up north when they’re outdoor rinks that makes a lot of sense but even for for young players in the south it’ll be uh you know ball hockey and and inline hockey the outdoor hockey is just pure fun that’s how we remember it whether it’s in your backyard or It’s at a school. There was there was a an outdoor rink. I had five outdoor rinks within a 5minute walk of my house growing up and we were on one of them if we weren’t, you know, had a hockey day. You get to hockey two days a week and you were just on it. So you get out there, you get that feel. The out you’re playing hockey outside brings you right back to your roots and it’s a real departure from hotel bus under a rink into an NHL locker room. It’s completely different. They’re just a lot of fun.
