Padres annouce MULTIPLE moves …
Padres’s making multiple roster moves. Let’s talk about the additions and what seems to be the general plan for this off seasonason. What’s going on everybody? Christian Patterson back with another episode of Padres’s Digest. Got to get to a little apology from my last episode for me being slightly offc center for those of you that were visually bugged by it. I appreciate you not abandoning the show and sticking around. Like I said, we got some roster moves to talk about. So, drop a comment. Let me know what you think about the Padres’s master plan that is going on right now and or just baseball stuff or if you just need to vent. We are here for you. As always, if you want to hit the subscribe button, I will never be mad at you for it. Saw this headline and I thought, let’s get to it. Padres select Garrett Hawkins and Miguel Mendes. What did they select them for? Drum roll, please. They have been added to the 40man roster. Um Garrett Hawkins and Miguel Menddees, both Padres’s prospects who are now members of the 40man roster. For those of you uh that are confused also by reading the end of that saying, why a 40man roster? What is that? And why are we at 36 people on it? And what the what, Christian? Why do I need to care about this? Okay, you care about it because the Padres’s uh are your team and you would not be on a Padres’s YouTube if you didn’t care about it. But you care about it because right now the Padres’s seem to be for the first time in the last couple of years going into a season where we will need to actually pay attention to our minor leagues in terms of of uh no longer just being like here are a bunch of trade pieces that AJ Prowler can throw together for great talent. It’s going to be we got to start paying a little bit of attention to who maybe gets to get called up or who is even just invited to like spring training. So that the all of these moves matter. the 40man roster. The very brief summary for those of you uh that are not like diehard baseball fans and some some of you that are die hard baseball fans will probably nitpick my summary of it is that Major League Baseball you got 25 guys on your actual MLB team at any given point. But then you can expand it down to 40 to protect certain dudes from the rule five draft which is where you can draft players out of other teams franchises. And then it gets more complicated than that. But just needless to say, the guy the extra 15 guys beyond the 25 man on your major league roster who comprise your 40man roster are usually guys that you designate as fairly important and crucial to your team’s success or future or guys you just want to hold on to. Uh so there this is the Padres saying that Garrett Hawkins and Miguel Mendes are people that they find important. They are both pitchers. So, let’s get to the summary of like what are we looking at right now? I apologize as always to people that are watching this on a phone. I will I will read along for you. This is a description. Garrett Hawkins, 25, was the Padre’s ninth round pick in 2021. Uh he pitched 60 innings in 2025 with a sparkling 1.5 RA, 33 35.1% strikeout rate, 10% walk rate. He’s a pure bullpen prospect who returned from Johnny John’s surgery in 2025 with even better velocity and strikeout rates. Hawkins still hasn’t pitched in AAA, but is an obvious candidate to get a big league look in 2026. So, Hawkins being a bullpen guy. I this you you you I I get that some of you are going to be like, “Oh my god, Christian, I do not care in the middle of November about who’s going to be the eighth guy in the Padres’s bullpen.” And I say that you do need to care because if the Padres’s have a a a backend of Mason Miller and Adrien those two are elite. Past that, we have a couple of guys that are really good, but past that is where the actual to me important bullpen work is going to be done in 2026, given that we don’t really seem to have uh a viable path towards like inning eating starters, just horses winding up on our rotation. Joe Musgrove, sure. Paveta, sure. Even if you have those two guys going seven innings every time they’re out there, every single time they’re out there, the rest of what’s going to comprise our three, four, five rotation or the the other pieces are not. We just don’t have those guys right now. So, the bullpen’s going to get a lot of usage. And yes, that usage is going to include the pot. Like the Potters aren’t going to hold back and be like, “Oh, we can only throw Mason Miller two times a week.” They’re going to use those guys, but we’re also going to need the David Morgans to come out of the woodworks again and Yuki Matsui to have a better season and guys then like Garrett Hawkins to step up on their maybe he’s the shuttle guy who comes up and down six different times. But the there are just there’s a need from my opinion to really care about who’s going to comprise the bulk of those. Just eat them up. You know, we’re down three to the Astros in a dog days of summer game. Do we have a guy that we can trust to just go out there and keep us where we’re at? Get a a bridge quarterback to get us from a from a night game on a Tuesday to to in through a day game on a Wednesday. Like, it’s those innings that I’m talking about that Hawkins could be a viable guy. And I love the strikeout to walk ratio. I am this is not I I get that this is me kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel for content here, but this isn’t me scraping the bottom of the barrel content at the same time if you get what I’m saying because these are actually good pitchers and the Padres’s designating them to the 40 man I think is a good sign. Uh let’s let’s talk about Mendes. He’s 23 so a couple years younger climbed through the levels this season topping out in double A and posting a collective 322 erra. Let me know, drop a comment like what stats in the minors do you really care about? But is RA tempting to you to get in hyped in and are you only whipped? Do you need the more advanced stuff like the strikeout to walk rates and spin rates and fly balls against batters born below the Mason Dixon line on a full moon? Like where do you draw the line on on analytics that you’re looking for in the minor leagues? The Dominican board hurler draws a plus grade for his fast ball and slider. The former in particular, he has had subpar command that still needs refinement if he’s to continue as a starter for the time being. The Padres’s have continue to try and develop him in a rotation role. He started 21 games in 2025. Again, I get that some of these guys are not necessarily people that were like, “Oh my gosh, we need to stop everything that we are doing.” and realign our Padres’s fandom to care more about this person than anybody else. But looking at these two as pitchers who are getting some, you know, some of the work and then you look here on our top prospects and we got Cruz Schoolcraft um and several other pitcher. I get that this one’s a little weird because Bradley Rodriguez is still listed in this and there’s some guys that have already made the majors that are still considered prospects until they get a certain amount of time. What I’m trying to say is you take our two starters here that that are two or two pitchers, one starter, one reliever, but potentially two relievers that are being added to the 40man, and you got Cruz Schoolcraft and some other Padres’s pitchers in the top 10. And it to me the the the sum of the whole the the sum of the total here is that it does sort of seem like we have a little bit of pitching kind of coming together in the minor leagues right now. Little pitching kind of coming together. Not I’m not hitting you guys with we’re saved. Ah, but I I will hit you with like some of you have said in the comments, just give me every arm we can get. Just a mass arms. Throw it against the wall. See what sticks. This could be the kind of thing where the difference for the Padres’s this coming 2026 season is made in the margins. And when the team goes through the valleys again of X, Y or Z pitchers being hurt and batters having LOLs and this that we we we’re not going to turn to like oh who’s the future superstar but can we turn and lean on depth and if we can lean on a little just a little bit of like there’s not a like as long as there’s not when we get down to players 27 through 50 in our in our organization that it’s just this like exponent. It’s it’s like watching crypto the last couple weeks and it’s just it’s tanking and you think you’re at the bottom and you’re going to buy the dip, but you’re like, “Nope, this isn’t the bottom. I’m not buying the dip. We’re still going down.” Like, we need to avoid the Padres’s organizationally being that. And maybe that is what actually gets us the home field in the wild card. We’re not going to catch the Dodgers. We’re just not. We’re going to have to beat them in the playoffs. Beat him in a seven game set. We can do that. But we maybe do that by getting there into the playoffs in a home game type vibes. And you know, maybe I’m completely overstretching, but I kind of think that this is good news that the Padres’s are adding more pitching to that 40man roster and pitching that seems to be right around the corner for like maybe could dabble in the major leagues this year. So, I don’t know. I’m curious what you guys think. Drop a comment. Let me know. And as always, if you want to hit the subscribe button, I ain’t going to hate you for it. Practicing.

If Rueben says “put this pitcher on the 40.” then it’s probably sound.
Also, love the WHIP stat.
Team needs to get younger.
These moves are may seem small now but come September next year these moves magnify. Go Padres!
Niebla saw something so all we can do is support his decision. Dude knows his stuff. They’re going to need a strong bullpen this coming up season so I can see their vision.
What farm system😂 fire Aj
