No Silver Linings for the Sacramento Kings After 7th Straight Loss | Locked On Kings

make it seven straight losses now for the Sacramento Kings. The good news is they don’t have to play the Oklahoma City Thunder anymore this season. The bad news is they lost to the Thunder again 113 to 999. The Kings 3 and12 start is their worst start to a season since the 1990 1991 season. And while the Kings did compete better and hang with OKC at times during this game, this team is not deserving of any silver linings. I’ll explain why right here on Locked on Kings. You are Locked on Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time. Time for another episode of Locked on Kings. Hello and welcome into Locked on Kings, your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all season long. This episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if your bet wins, you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Head to fanduel.com to get started. My name is Matt George. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor and reporter for ABC10 News. And yes, I will admit the Sacramento Kings played better tonight than they have through much of this now 7game losing streak that they’re on. They got a couple of practice days, a few days off, and it seemed like there were some good things that came out of that practice. So, yes, they played better. Yes, just like the last time they played the Thunder in Oklahoma City, they competed with the Thunder. Certainly not how they played when they lost by 31 to the Thunder in Sacramento in their NBA Cup game. So, that was better. They played better. There were some better things on the floor. And do I care? No, I don’t. I don’t want to give any silver linings to this team. Not just because I’m a bitter, grumpy podcast host that is forced to watch this team all the time. And really, I say that I I have the privilege of being able to do what I do. I’m not ungrateful for that. But like, I’m not just saying that to be to be grumpy and overly negative. It’s because y’all, we’re not talking about a young roster that’s on the rise or h is building towards a future and is trying to just develop something together in the NBA and they hung with the defending champs. They were competitive. Yes, that’s awesome. That’s a good step in the right direction. That’s what we want to see. And maybe in a year or two they can do even better than that and be on the path towards becoming the Oklahoma City Thunder in the future. That’s not the Sacramento Kings team we’re talking about. This Kings team that’s three and 12 off to their worst start since 1990 1991 who has lost seven straight. This Sacramento Kings team is the third oldest roster in the NBA featuring two Hall of Famers in Demar De Rozan and Russell Westbrook are future Hall of Famers. Two allstars or former all-stars and Zack Lavine and Deanna Sabonis. Sabonis did not play in tonight’s game to be fair. Doesn’t really matter. I don’t know. I mean if he had played would it have been a little bit better? Maybe the Sacramento Kings still would have lost just like they have been losing all these games that Deont Sabonis has played in this roster should have I mean they have decades of NBA experience and they can’t win games period. They just they can’t win games. And the reason why is because individually these players are very talented and have specific strengths. Demard Rozan’s strength is scoring from the mid-range. Demand Sabonis’ strength is passing out of the high post. Russell Westbrook’s strength is the energy and hustle that he plays with in getting downhill. Zack Lavine’s strength is he’s a threelevel score that can score from anywhere on the floor. Keon Ellis’s strength is his 3 andd ability. If the Kings would actually play him, like all these players have individual strengths, but as a team, the Sacramento Kings don’t have a strength. They don’t. They’re not good at anything. They’re not. They’re not good at anything. The Kings held the Thunder to 113 points in this game. I say held them to 113 points because 113 points is the fewest that the Kings have allowed since October 28th, which just so happened to be the last time they played the Thunder at OKC when they held the Thunder to 107. 113 points allowed is their third lowest point total in 15 games. In the 15 games they’ve played, 113 points is the third lowest point total. Now, you might want to look at that and go, this is a defensive thing. If the Kings if if 113 points is their third lowest total, it’s because defensively they’re so bad. They’re giving up way way more points than that more often. You’re right. But my point in this is not to focus on the defense. My point is to focus on the offense. Because even when you had your third best defensive performance of the season, offensively, you only managed 99 points and lost by 14. You held Oklahoma City to 27 points in the first quarter. It was one of the most competitive first quarters that the Kings have had during this losing streak. You held them to 27 points in the first quarter, you only scored 25. You held Oklahoma City to 25 points in the third quarter, you only scored 19. You turned the ball over eight times that quarter. Look, I get that tonight, taking this game individually, tonight the Sacramento Kings faced the number one defense in the Oklahoma City Thunder. This Thunder defense is for real. But here’s the problem. This is not something specific to tonight’s game or the three games that the Sacramento Kings have played against the Thunder. Just a couple of nights ago, the Kings were playing really good basketball against the Minnesota Timberwolves and then couldn’t score in the fourth quarter. The Kings have been held under 20 points in at least one quarter in three of their last four games. So, here is my point. Even if this horrendous Sacramento Kings defense is capable of putting together a quarter or a half of halfway decent defense, it doesn’t matter because the offense doesn’t do anything with it. They don’t they don’t score. They don’t build upon those advantages. This Kings team is so bad defensively that they need their offense to carry them through and take advantage of the moments when they are generating stops when teams aren’t shooting well against them because if they don’t, they’re going to lose every single game. Now, had the Kings outscored the Thunder 35-27 in the first quarter, would they have won this game? I don’t think so. I think the Thunder would have closed the gap and and won this game still. But my point is when this Kings team has a quarter where they only allow 27 points, only allow 25 points. When they hold an opponent under 30 points in a quarter, they need to score over 30 themselves or it’s just a waste of time and a waste of opportunity. This team is not good enough to not score in the quarters where they’re defensively looking like a competent NBA team. Like the first and third quarters defensively, Sacramento looked competent for a good majority of this game. Sacramento looked competent defensively. 113 points in the NBA. It’s not great, but it’s not something to like scoff at. That’s you can win basketball games. a Kings roster featuring the amount of offensive talent that this team has. They should be able to win games when they only I shouldn’t say only when they give up 113 points. This team is more than capable of scoring close to 120 a night. But they don’t because this offense is terrible. And like I’ve talked about before, you have to have an established strength before you can address your weakness. And I fully respect and understand Doug Christiey’s desire, passion, addiction, almost obsession with trying to fix Sacramento defensively because that’s how he’s wired as a coach. Mike Brown low-key had the same thing. But what Mike Brown had that Doug Christie doesn’t have is at the time Mike Brown had the best offense in the NBA. It got worse because teams figured them out and they didn’t do anything to fix their issues. Shout out Monty McNair in that front office. But Mike at least started from the basis of we’re really good offensively. Now we need to improve the defense. Doug Christie is starting from the basis of basis of our defense is god awful and our offense is barely better. What are you going to do? What are you going to do? The Kings cannot build leads. It’s not just that they can’t sustain leads and win basketball games. They can’t even build leads. I have some shocking numbers for you to share on that point when we come back. This episode of the Locked on Kings podcast is brought to you by Skiims. When Skiims announced that they were making underwear for men, I was intrigued. I’ve heard so much about Skiims comfort from for years from so many different people. Most guys though, we stick to whatever that we’ve been buying since college. I know I’m guilty of that. It drives my wife crazy. The same fits, the same waistbands that roll and a whole lot of settling. Skiims men’s changes that one upgrade and it’s obviously why everyone’s been talking about Skiims. Once I tried Ski men’s underwear, I I can’t go back. Seriously, I tossed out every other pair of underwear that I have and just loaded up on Skiims. It is so worth it. They’re designed to feel good, fit right, and actually stay put. No slipping, no sagging, no adjusting. Just genuinely great underwear and great comfort and confidence every time that you wear them. They’re perfect for any lifestyle. Whether you’re super active, going to the gym, sitting at your desk all day, playing a round of golf, chasing your kids around, whatever you are doing, Skiims is there to support you and keep you comfortable. Shopkens men’s now at skims.com. And when you place your order, choose podcast in their post-purchase survey and select our show from the drop down so they know that we sent you. So, like I was saying there before the break, it’s not just that the Sacramento Kings can’t hold on to leads. It’s not just that the Sacramento Kings can’t win basketball games. The Kings can’t even build respectable leads in the modern NBA. You know, something that’s very true of the modern NBA with how prolific offenses are, or at least they’re supposed to be, and with the Steph Curry era of of basketball that we’re in, like a a 10-point lead, a 15-point lead, a double- digit lead isn’t what it used to be. That’s something that we used to hear De’Arren Fox talk a lot about both positively and negatively. When the Kings would blow blow big leads when Fox was here, he’d talk about, “Yeah, like we took our foot off the gas up 15. We can’t do that because 15 points can dam uh disappear like that.” On the flip side, he would say we were down 12, we were down 13, but we knew one big run and we’re back into the game, right? So, building a double-digit lead isn’t what it used to be. And yet the Sacramento Kings still can’t do it. Check these numbers out. These numbers are are crazy. This is what I did during halftime because I was depressed. The Kings haven’t built a doubledigit lead in two weeks. The last time they had a double- digit lead, they were up by 11 against the Golden State Warriors on November 5th. That was the the game that the actually that’s the last game they won. That’s the third game that they won, that game in Golden State to begin that five-game home stand. That’s the last time they’ve led by double digits in a game. The most the or the largest lead that the Kings have had in the last seven games is seven points. Like that’s atrocious. This team can’t build leads. On top of that, just because we know how bad the defense is while they are struggling to build leads, they have trailed by 13 or more points in the last 11 straight games, including tonight in Oklahoma City. So, this team is falling behind by double digits with ease, oftentimes in the first quarter, but they’re not able to build a lead themselves. Again, why is this worth harping on and focusing on, and why is it so concerning? Because offense should be the strength of the Sacramento Kings. You mean to tell me that a roster with Zack Lavine and Demar De Rozan and Deont Sabonis and Dennis Shruder and Russell Westbrook and all these players that have more than enough capability on the offensive side of the ball, that roster can’t build a lead more than seven points in seven games. Again, I know in order to build a lead, you also have to get some stops on defense, but it’s it’s it’s throwing dirt under the rug or it’s ignoring part of the problem if you just say, “No, it’s just because of defense.” They can score enough, but they’re not getting any stops. So, how can you build a lead if you’re not getting any stops? No. When they’re getting stops, they’re not scoring either. You know, the amount of times that the Sacramento Kings just lost control of the basketball for no reason this game against OKC. Again, I know the Thunder are the number one defense in the league and they make good defensive plays, but the Kings half the time just dribble the ball off their own foot or chucking bricks from three-point range. Defenses like again, OKC number one in defense, but defenses know how to play against the Sacramento Kings. All 29 teams know how to play defense against the Kings. You pack the paint, dare them to shoot threes, they’re probably not going to shoot in high enough clip for you to really respect it, and you’re going to go and score on the other end because it’s too easy. Every team is doing it against the Kings because every team knows that they can. Like Sacramento, there was a twoon-one fast break the Kings had in the third quarter that they couldn’t even convert. Like this team is so atrocious on the offensive side of the ball and it’s being hidden by how even worse the defense is. It’s crazy to me. crazy that this team has not been able to build more than a seven-point lead in the last two weeks of basketball that they’ve been playing. And a big reason for it is Zack Lavine. Zack Lavine’s last two games, he scored eight points on four of 10 shooting against the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight. Zack Lavine didn’t score a single point in the second half. And yes, he played in the second half. He wasn’t a scratch with injury. Dennis or Zack Lavine played the second half of this game, didn’t score a single point, and then in the loss against the Spurs, eight points, three of seven shooting from the field. Over the last seven games, Zack Lavine is averaging 14.7 points per game. That’s way too low for his number. But here’s the weird thing. Lavine is shooting the ball well. He’s still shooting 46% from the field. The problem is he’s not shooting. 11 field goal attempts a game over the last seven games. That number needs to be 15 plus. Henry Turner had a really, really good line on the pregame show on the Kings radio broadcast with Jason Ross tonight. He said, “Zack Lavine is the head of the snake.” And if Zack Lavine’s only taking 11 shots a game, only taking seven shots versus San Antonio, only 10 shots against OKC, that means your bite as the head of the snake, your bite has no venom. It doesn’t matter what Demar Rozan is scoring or Dennis Shruder who had another good game off the bench. He’s been scoring well. It does not matter because the head of your snake has got no bite to it. And does that not speak to the big problem with this Kings roster offensively? Your turn, my turn. Your turn, my turn. I know there’s only one basketball and there’s only so many shots to go around, but it seems like in order for one person to have a good game, the other person has to sacrifice. There is not very like we have not seen really at all this season, maybe a handful of times where Demar and Zach and Dom are scoring the ball well together as a group. It hasn’t happened enough and it hasn’t happened for the last couple of weeks. Like if Zack Lavine’s not scoring the basketball, he’s not doing anything for you. And I don’t mean to be disrespectful towards Zack, but that is your job. That is what you’re paid almost $50 million to do. Just score the basketball. And if you’re only taking 11 shots per game, some of that’s on you. If you want to put some of that blame on the coaching staff, on your teammates for not getting you the ball enough, feel free to scream at them. Get me the freaking basketball because I need to score. That’s the only chance we have to win is when I’m scoring almost 30 points a game, which he was doing at the start of the season when the Kings were at least a little more competitive than they are right now or they’ve been over the last couple weeks. And this happened last season in the in the final third of the season after the Kings traded De’arren Fox for Zack Lavine. Zack had those stretches where he looked really, really good offensively, put on a show, and then remember that like week and a half randomly where Zach just refused to shoot the basketball. And at the time, we were trying to give Zack Grace, his wife had just had a baby. He’d moved from Chicago to Sacramento. He’s trying to be a new a good teammate on a new team. All that is gone. And he’s doing the same thing now. Like, Zack Lavine has to score the basketball or he’s not doing anything for you. The offense is a problem. Your offensive players aren’t even trying to shoot. I’m I know the defense is bad, Doug, but the offense is not fine like we keep hearing you say. This episode of the Lockdown Kings podcast is also brought to you by Ripling. All right, Debbie Downer, Matt, let’s get a little positivity into this podcast at least. Maxi Mareno. Maxi Mareno got some really good minutes in this game with Demand Sabonis being out. And Maxi Mareno played really well. Like he played really, really well. Seven points, three of five from the field, one of one from three-point range. He took a three with confidence, knocked it down. You love to see it. Four rebounds. Would love that number to be higher in the 18 and a half minutes that you’ve played. But Maxim Reno was a plus three in his 18 and a half minutes. He was the only player on the team with a positive plus minus. So when Maxim Reno was on the floor, the Sacramento Kings won those minutes. Not by a lot, but the Kings won the minutes when Maxim Reno was on the floor. Am I going to use this as as an example as to why Maxim Reno should play 20 minutes a night and sit down Drew Eubanks, it’s Maxim Reno time? No, not yet. But he got playing time, got opportunity against the Oklahoma City Thunder that that just pull sevenfooters out of a hat and he played well. He held his own. He looked like an NBA player against the defending champions. So, I’m very pleased with the game that Maxim Reno had and I’m glad that Doug was able to find 20 minutes for him or almost 20 minutes. Can’t say the same about Nick Clifford and Keon Ellis. Eight minutes for Nick, 10 minutes for Keon. It’s frustrating. I know it’s frustrating. I know you’re you might want to talk about it and be frustrated about it. It’s expected. It’s where the Kings are at. And I know you’re you you might be sick to your stomach now with the amount of times that I’ve brought up evaluation period. The Kings are in an evaluation period. It’s what they’re in. It’s what they’re doing. Now, if this carries out beyond like January, February, then I think fans are going to have a real problem. In fact, saying January, February seems like forever. I I I don’t know if the Kings can go one more month with playing their main guys as much as they’re playing their main guys and not playing guys like Keon and Meek and Max and maybe even Devin Carter. Guys that maybe kind of sort of have a chance of being part of your future because this the core of this team should not be looked at as part of your future period. Shouldn’t at all. They’re just they’re all they’re bad. They’re good individually but good. Go be good individually for a team that actually can use you individually and as a team correctly. It ain’t here in Sacramento. But I I I know you want to get frustrated about Nick and Keon not playing. I want to see them play more, too. But it’s it is what it is. That’s the situation the Kings are in. You don’t have to like the explanation, but I’ve given you the explanation. They’re in an examination period right now. That’s what they’re doing. So, we will get to examine hopefully tomorrow against the Memphis Grizzlies. Maybe the only chance that the Kings have of winning a basketball game in the near future. The Kings might sounds like hopefully get Keegan Murray back. Jason Anderson of the Sacramento B reporting that it’s a strong likelihood or that that Keegan will be playing. I haven’t heard that specifically from the Kings, so I’m not sharing that or or or confirming that myself, but that’s what Jason is saying. Uh if I hope he plays. I really I mean we just I just want to see Keegan Murray back. But if you missed my episode, my last episode where I talked a lot about how Keegan should be used, the short-term and long-term plan, I I’ll kind of sum it up for you. Shortterm, when Keegan Murray comes back, while he gets comfortable and gets reaclimated to the NBA game, I want to see the Kings go back to the starting lineup that they worked with all training camp. Not because I believe that Keegan Murray come back, he’s going to be the missing piece that suddenly makes everything work. I do believe the Kings will be noticeably better defensively because Keegan Murray’s on the floor. I do believe the spacing will be noticeably be notice excuse me noticeably better because Keegan Murray’s on the floor. He has to knock down those threes of course. I think the rebounding will be better with Keegan Murray on the floor. That stuff should stand out naturally just because of who Keegan is a play is as a player. He won’t completely fix the problems and completely save the Kings, but those areas should be noticeably better. But what I want to see specifically is when you plug Keegan back in the next 10 or so games that he’s playing and hopefully you can stay as healthy as possible. Hopefully Damont Sabonis is back. he was out of this game with that that knee injury, banged knees in that Spurs game. So hopefully he can play with the Me against the Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow. But I want to see that starting lineup and that includes Dennis Shruder getting back in the starting lineup. Move Russell Westbrook back to the bench, not because Russ is terrible or anything like that. Dennis has been playing really well. Again, I want to see what that starting five, the initial plan looks like in real NBA minutes together to see if it looks any better, who benefits from playing with Keegan, who doesn’t benefit from playing with Keegan. How much of a difference does Keegan Murray truly make? That’s the short-term plan. Then after 10 to 15 games of that where I expect the Kings to still be losing a majority of the time because Keegan can’t fix how broken this roster is. Then I want to see the Kings feature Keegan a little bit more offensively. Get him the ball. Get him 12 to 15 shots a game. Run him off of screens. Draw up sets for him. Let him shoot and get him involved. Don’t just have him stand in the corner and space the floor so Demar Rose and Zack Lavine can get to work. Get Keegan Murray more involved. But that’s the long-term plan. So if Keegan Murray does play against the Grizzlies, I don’t know if we’re going to see I think he’ll he’ll immediately be into the starting lineup because no disrespect to Precious Achua who’s been playing decently well, but it’s not even comparable. Keegan needs to be out there. I just want to see what it looks like. I don’t expect the Kings to look monumentally better. Although, if they suddenly do, if Keegan really is that important to this team, that does nothing but good things and says nothing but good things about who Keegan is as a player. I’ll be back for a postgame episode after Kings Grizzlies. No matter if Keegan plays or doesn’t, no matter if the Kings win or lose, it’s a very winnable game. John Morance’s not playing. Sounds like Jiren Jackson Jr. might not be playing either. Last I checked, he was doubtful for that game. But it’s the second night of a backto-back. And if the Kings can do anything consistently, it’s lose to short-handed teams. So, who knows if the Kings are going to be able to win this game or not. I’d like to say if they play the way they did for a lot of this OKC game, they should be able to beat the Grizzlies, but I can’t say any of that with any kind of confidence with this Kings roster. So, all we can do is just watch and see what happens. Can’t wait to have you join me on that next episode of Locked on Kings. Until then, my name is Matt George. You’ve been listening to the Locked on Kings podcast, part of the Lock Podcast Network.

Matt George reacts to the Sacramento Kings’ loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder where, even after playing better, they still don’t deserve moral victories and silver linings.

  1. Why are these useless vets even playing heavy minutes when they can't win anymore games. Are they looking to lose 15 straight? Bench these underwhelming old overpaid vets and start developing the young guns immediately!

  2. I 100 percent agree with your Zach Lavine assessment. Its spot on. The good thing is though is that Doug is sitting Him when hes not scoring.

Maxime is definitely a huge bright spot. Best frontcourt in the NBA and he definitely heid his own.

I swear since Nique starting wearing braids his game has gotten worse. He looks like Maxime used to during his minutes on the court.

Spurs werent even guarding him and He was bricking literal wide open 3s. He needs a couple to go down

And defensive glue Guys can be seriously underestimated as far as their impact on wins and the team. Its very possible that Keegan coming back will make a huge impact. Glue Guys are extremely important as far as impacting wins.

Okc wouldnt be near the same without Dort and Caruso. Itd look ALOT different over an 82 game season

  3. What’s the point of winning this year? How are they not better off getting the highest pick possible? Their best hope for the future is high draft picks. They aren’t winning a championship soon so no reason to care if they lose.

  4. I think they have improved, esp on defense. Zach needs to have more shots. But we only have one guard that is a playmaker & passes a lot, Russ. Others are more iso. I didnt like the rotations, esp in the 4th.

  5. Let's be real, we have nothing against the players' characters and as people, but I truly believe we all knew this outcome was a possibility with DeRozan and LaVine being added to the roster. Our offense has always been good with Domas at the helm, and the problem was not scoring, but defense and length, and LaVine and DeRozan did not solve any of those things.
