What had he done previously that we decided to give him $30 mill guaranteed?

Makes less sense with each passing week. But I see why they did it. They obviously had some level of confidence in him and that he could find a new level (for him), while also knowing that it could fail and that he likely wasn’t the future. I think they took a swing (and missed) and also gave him a last chance to prove himself. They will move on and build something better
I mean, we aren’t cutting him before June 1st so it’s a dumb post to begin with.
Play him like the saints did with Taysom Hill. Also, don’t design a play around the pocket for him since we know he can’t run that type of offense.
I don’t mind wanting the two years of control. In retrospect, the dollars were way too high but I see the logic.
We’re going to be top 5 in cap space next offseason even with all the dead cap, this won’t prevent us from signing anyone so who cares
It’ll be a $13 mil cap hit if we cut him post-June 1, so it’s a total clickbait title that could have been almost as good if he went with $48 mil, which is what it will be. We paid Fields because he had other options (Steelers were interested in bringing him back, allegedly) and we had to outbid them.
We went all-in on Rodgers twice and it’s time to pay the piper. We’re loading up for 2027.
20m per year which can essentially end of 15m per year for a guy signed to be a starter is at the low end of qb pay scale.
There were reasons to think he could keep developing. Hes marginally improved every season he was in the league. There were flashes of capable play. There was a lot of discussion around his inadequate coaching his first three seasons. Then you have to look at the Jets realistic options. His cap hit isnt going to hamstring the Jets at all. They took a low odds shot and the odds hit as expected. Now they pivot and pick their guy. Its not like they have stars to pay massive contracts to anytime soon.
This basically doesn’t matter, the Jets have so much cap space next year, including that $17m they’re rolling over from this year. The combined QB cap hit basically will not matter, especially if they’re rolling with a rookie QB next year
Who cares? The cap goes up every year and the team won’t contend until 2027 anyway. By then both contracts will be off the books. Nice try Rich!
Here’s how it makes sense: the Jets have been such an erratic team for so long that no agent will let his client start for them without a cash in hand
Do people just not understand what the QB market is in 2025?
Ok, but is it not cheaper to cut him after June 1st? If it is, that’s obviously what they’re going to, so what’s the point of even saying this dumb shit lol. Why not post what the realistic numbers would be?
Only now people are realizing this?
Only now people are realizing the implications of the Rogers fiasco?
well good thing there’s literally no reason to cut him before June 1st. like what kinda “report” is this?
“if the Jets randomly decided to throw away extra money, they’d be throwing away so much money!”
Most expensive RB playing as a QB this season
Can someone explain why in the fuck would we cut Justin Fields?
They paid Josh McCown $10 to back up Darnold and he was Proven Stink at the time.
$30M guaranteed over two seasons for Fields isn’t bad.
I’ll probably get down voted but this was always the plan, been calling it a “Soft Tank” heading into the season.
– Gets fan base semi-excited thinking they can reclaim a young QB like we have watched with Darnold, Baker and Geno.
– Gets Garrett and Ruckert on board cause of the college connection
– Allows Woody a name to sell tickets
– Fields has plenty of game tape to suggest he stinks at QB, meaning you were likely to have a high pick this year.
– The biggest one, openly bottoming out this year may have pushed both Garrett and Sauce away from signing.
Basically, I am 100% okay with the Jets eating $30m in guaranteed money over 2 years in order to have 2 additional first round picks + Garrett locked in
