  1. Cossa fizzled at the end of last season but holy shit has he been good.

The AHL scheduling is super easy compared to the shit show at the NHL. We almost could use a three headed monster just to ease him in to the NHL grind.

Pretty much the AHL plays every 3 or 4 days instead of the 3 games in 4 nights mess at the NHL.

They do have some packed weekends though.

  2. Today is shaping up well – likely to be off work at a normal humane hour and a game day!

    Let’s goooooooo!

  3. Started work early today AND got a delicious soup going in the crockpot. Major adulting wins since I can leave work early and I don’t have to make dinner later! There are no distractions to take away from watching some good ol’ Detroit Red Wings Fucking Hockey™!

  4. There was talk on the sub about a lack of depth scoring on the Wings. Personally, I didn’t know one way or another whether the Wing scoring distribution was reasonable or not nor did I know how much it mattered.

I struggled to figure out how to quantify depth scoring until I remembered my collage stats class 40’ish years ago. Standard Deviation could take a big step quantify it.

For those not familiar with Standard Deviation, it measures the the difference from the average. A set of numbers like {5,0,0,0,0} has a standard deviation of 2 whereas a set like {1,1,1,1,1} has a standard deviation of 0. The lower the standard deviation, the greater the distribution of goals in this case or more depth scoring.

There is a formula for calculating the standard deviation but unless you’re in a Stats class, you’re better off plugging the numbers into your favorite spreadsheet and use the Standard Deviation function.

Since the quantity of numbers in your set can effect the calculation ( std of {5,0,0,0,0} = 2 whereas std of {5,0,0,0,0,0} = 1.863), I only looked at the top 20 scorers for each team. I think only the Kings’s 20th top scorer had a goal. No team’s 21st top scorer had a goal.

Also, I only looked at goals and not points. Wins and losses are based on goals. The number of assists have no barring on a team’s record.

Remembering the lower the standard Deviation, the wider the distribution of goals, here are the results:

    Rank Team Goal Standard Deviation
    1 St. Louis 1.92029
    2 New York Rag 1.95959
    3 Seattle 2.01184
    4 Calgary 2.20227
    5 Nashville 2.24499
    6 Philadelphia 2.30814
    7 Los Angeles 2.40572
    8 Buffalo 2.41402
    9 Columbus 2.45917
    10 Carolina 2.55734
    11 Washington 2.73861
    12 New Jersey 2.81069
    13 Ottawa 2.89655
    14 Detroit 2.93258
    15 Pittsburgh 2.98161
    16 Tampa Bay 3.04097
    17 Toronto 3.05778
    18 Vegas 3.06594
    19 San Jose 3.10604
    20 Montreal 3.15079
    21 Vancouver 3.19179
    22 Winnipeg 3.19805
    23 Minnesota 3.22335
    24 Utah 3.26956
    25 Chicago 3.27261
    26 Edmonton 3.30568
    27 Dallas 3.32566
    28 Florida 3.35075
    29 Anaheim 3.45543
    30 New York Is 3.45832
    31 Boston 3.51390
    32 Colorado 3.96106

My observation is that the teams at the top with the lowest standard deviation, with the more depth scoring, kinda suck. The teams where there is less depth scoring seem to do better.

  5. Larkin riding in the back during the Lucas interview getting everyone their coffees and chiming in like a proud big brother. Love seeing more of his personality this year. You can really see why he’s the captain. He’s been getting gassed up so much this season (by the Tkachuk brothers, his own team and staff, the guys on the Empty Netters podcast, etc.) and he deserves every bit of it.

  6. I really hate mushy apples. Trying some different varieties because “an apple a day keeps the fatty liver away” and I love a good honeycrisp but also like finding new apples to try. These Lucy Glo’s are a disappointment.

  7. Goalie prospect update:

    Sebastian Cossa (he’s baaaack) — 5GP, 1.60 GAA, .942%SV (1st in the AHL min 5 games played)

Trey Augustine — 9 GP, 1.32 GAA, .948%SV (1st in the NCAA min 9 games played)

Michal Postava (injured) — 5 GP 2.15 GAA, .936%SV (3rd in the AHL min 5 games played)

Rudy Guimond — 15GP, 2.30 GAA, 0.920%SV (1st in the QMJHL min 10 games played)

Michal Pradal, Landon Miller are a bit more average. But wow, easily the best goalie prospect pool in the NHL.

  8. Are the Oilers gonna try to get any kind of goalie or are they really gonna get lit up for 7-9 goals a game for the rest of the season?

  9. Packed up the tyke to go to grandma’s this morning, hopped in the car and tossed my 600 song grab bag playlist on shuffle. First song that played was Don’t Stop Believing.

    Red Wings win

  10. It was super refreshing to see JVR jump on the Seattle guy after running Talbot. That’s the shit I wanna see

  11. The Habs fanbase seems to be pretty upset with how Reinbacher is developing. Kid is only 21 and is supposed to be more of a defensive minded d-man. Could be a future upgrade over Hamonic/JBD. If they’re really that unhappy with him that’s a reclamation project I wouldn’t mind taking on. We’re eventually going to have to convert some of our forward assets into defensemen assets anyways. We simply have too many good forward prospects in the system. Guys like Berggren, Ras, Soderblom, etc will probably need to find new homes soon to make way for Mazur, Ammo, Bear, Plante, MBN, Buchelnikov, etc.

Edit: Our goalie pipeline is starting to look the same Cossa, Augustine, Postava and Guimond are all looking extremely legit. Then you have guys like Pradel and Gylander that look like they might be decent as well.

  12. Steak and manhattans yesterday for bday dinner, got those tickets (gonna be out there for the Stars game) that was a pretty dam good day.

Looking forward to a Wings revenge game tonight

  13. Lombardi with a 1G last night with 5SOG.

    MBN with 1A with 6SOG.

I hope these guys make the roster. MBN by all means likes to shoot.

  14. When you’re first place in the division and then have a night with no game and other teams in your division play and then you still stay in first place

  15. I want to get a custom vanity plate Wings related and need ideas. I think it can only be 6 characters long so throw some my way. Nyquist has been my favorite player for years but can’t go wrong with Z, Lidstrom, Kasper, etc.

  16. If u/dilypucks or someone else want; I’ll be at a concert and can’t post highlights

  17. Should be a fun day. Stopping at Vintage Detroit to have them sew on my leather “A” patch onto my Raymond Centennial, then heading to the game after that for my 3rd game of the season. I hate watching us play the Islanders, but… should be fun still!

  18. Yo what’s wrong with CSKA Moscow? When they picked up Buchelnikov I was disappointed because it meant he wouldn’t be over here, but also excited because it meant he was in a bigger market and might get noticed more.

He seems to be doing fine enough (although not as amazing as I’d have hoped) but nobody on his team aside from an ironic Daniel Sprong and Dmitry Gamzin in goal really seem to be doing anything. I thought CSKA Moscow was supposed to be pretty dominant in the KHL?

  19. As a dude with a pretty profound Michigan accent, the one thing that never caught on with me was calling it “Meijer’s.” I just call it Meijer. I don’t know why that’s the only thing omitted from my dialect

  20. If Montreal called and offered Demidov for Raymond, one for one, would you do it?

I think no and TSN is kinda crazy.
