LIVE: Rams vs. Saints Postgame Show | 2025 NFL Week 9
Well, not quite the Hollywood ending we were hoping for for the Saints. Unfortunately, a 34-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at Sofi Stadium in Englewood. Uh Scott Shanley. We saw a lot of good things. Welcome to the Saint Saints postgame show, by the way. Brought to you by Uber Eatats. Uh I’m John Deer brought to you um here with Scott Shanley. And Scott, we didn’t think it would be easy for the Saints today starting the rookie quarterback. Um what were some of the things that you saw in this game that kind of tilted it toward the Rams? Yeah, it was going to be it was a tough challenge going against the team that had the second most sacks in the NFL. But, you know, for the most part, I felt like the offensive line did a good job protecting Tyler. He was pressured a few times. Gave they only gave up one sack, but it really goes back to uh, you know, the Rams front seven stopping the Saints running game. Just never been able to get on track as far as getting into third and short and getting into advantageous things. I mean, two for nine on third down, you know, 0 for two on fourth down. Just not enough plays. And when it all comes down to it, it just comes down to the Rams had 77 plays, you had 40 plays. It’s easier to score more points when you have twice the plays. Yeah. You double up a team on plays, your defense is going to be on the field a ton of plays. And unfortunately for the Saints, caught up with him. Tyler Shook did make his first start 15 to 24, 176 yards, a touchdown, 11 yard to Jawan Johnson. Also an interception late in that game. But Matthew Stafford showed what can happen when you have a veteran quarterback who’s in command of what they want to do offensively. uh he really engineered a 9-minute 46-second touchdown drive to open the second half after the Saints had scored their touchdown to end the first half. So really snatched the momentum right back. How much of a debilitating factor can that be? Yeah. Well, you know, going in the game, Matthew Stafford, he he’s Hall of Fame career, won a Super Bowl, and he’s been in this league since 2009. His first ever game was here in the Superdome. He’s put up a lot of great numbers and he’s a tough quarterback to stop, especially in the McVey offense. And you know, as great as he is, four touchdowns today, no interception. You know, I think an area of concern for the Saints is the pass rush. Not enough pass rush to affect him in the passing game. But it’s also hard to get pass rush when you have to worry about the run game so much. They ran the ball 43 times today for 171. So, as a defensive player, when they got the run going and the pass going, you’re kind of on your heels and you don’t know kind of what to defend. Yeah. And the Saints can’t get the run game going. 14 carries, 57 yards, just tough sledding all the way around offensively. I thought were I thought they might have been a little bit conservative offensively early in the game. And of course, you want to do that on the road with your rookie quarterback. Couldn’t get a couple of third down conversions early. Had a couple of three and outs. And unfortunately, the Rams score on three of their first four possessions in this game, touchdown drives, and that really got the Saints not just behind the six, that got them behind on the scoreboard. Now you’re playing catch-up with a rookie quarterback on the road against a really good Los Angeles Rams team. But the Saints defensively seem to struggle a decent amount. You know, you get Puka Nakua back. Devonte Adams catches a couple of touchdown passes, but really seemed to struggle being able to get off the field. Yeah. And you knew it was going to be a tough tough challenge. And that’s why we said in in the before the game started, we said, what’s a key to the game? Not getting down too early. You do not want to get down to now where they can just tee off offensively and go after Tyler. But, you know, defensively, you just want to see stacking weeks to week and know what you’re doing well. Last week, we we praised the defense. Last week, I thought they played well against Tampa. They stopped the run really well. today. They did not stop the run well and some of that not stopping the run well goes to we have all these pieces out here we have to worry about. We got to worry about Dvonte Adams. We have to worry about Cuka Naku. We have all these things out here on the perimeter and so you get light in the box and I think the Rams took advantage of their weapons on the outside and that’s why you go get those guys like Devonte Adams in free agency. It puts stress on the defense. Yeah, those guys really looked good offensively. Look like a welloiled machine. Uh Saints offensively. Tyler Shuck we mentioned the ball kind of jumps out of his hands. I mean he looks pretty lively. uh he looks like a guy who doesn’t mind taking shots down the field. He comes up with the unfortunate interception later in the game where you’re trying to make something happen, but as the game moved along, he looked to get a little bit more comfortable in what he was doing. Yeah, I agree. I I think everybody it’s it’s a it’s a win- loss oriented business. We get that. It’s the business of winning, but within the game, there’s a game within the game. So, every player plays their game within the game, and you just want to see you want to see splash plays. You want to see ability that that’s why we drafted that guy. That’s why we signed that guy in free agency. And I felt like Tampa Bay and again today Tyler makes some throws that the ball jumps out of his hand. These deep NFL throws along the sideline that are not just routine plays. He does a good job. He he just needs experience and that’s what really what this game comes down to. You can practice all you want. You can say we practice as fast as anybody in the league, but it’s different when you get out under lights and you’re going against a team who maybe changes a scheme. They do something different than what you expected. Now, how fast can you adjust to that? So, there’s things that Tyler did in last week’s game and today’s game that you say he has the ability to play at this level because he has the arm talent to make a lot of throws that a lot of guys don’t make. Yeah. And two things I think worth mentioning. One, coach Kell Moore says he’s going to stay with Tyler Shook. This is not supposed to be a quick deal. They’re going to ride with him. And the second thing is maybe it’s good to get baptized by a really good defense and then move along and hopefully grow from that. No, I think there’s a lot to that. you go against a defense like the Rams, you kind of you get thrown into the deep end of the pool a little bit and the game’s moving really fast, next week it’ll slow down a little bit. And that’s kind of the evolution for all young players is the game feels really fast your first time out. Then it kind of slows down. You get used to what how they’re how you need to attack defenses and he’s going to go against another good defense. Carolina’s kind of rolling next week, so it’ll be the same thing. And um he’ll have some opportunities, but probably not as good a pass rush as he just went against today on the road. Yeah, it’ll be interesting to see how Tyler responds because, you know, you get into a game like that and it looks like his head is on a swivel a little bit. He’s getting the pass rush up the middle. He’s getting pass rush off the off the edges and suddenly now you can’t get to much of anything that you want to see. We did see a splash play in the run game from from from Taesm Hill. And so, what was that like? Because they are needing to string together something on the ground, especially to help your rookie quarterback. Yeah, it’s it’s been a while. It’s it’s first 20 a hard run of the season which is is takes a while but that’s why we’ve been harping so much on the running game whether it’s who you’re asking to do it or what type of plays you’re designed to you you have to get explosive plays in the running game. Nothing demoralizes a defense or a defensive coordinator. You want to get a defensive coordinator panicking start ripping off some long runs. Now he’s going to bring down a safety in the box. He’s going to load the box. Now you open up guys deep. So that it’s good to see those type of plays and and Taesm can do it all. I mean one of the greatest pro football players ever to live. I mean the things he’s been able to do. We’ve talked about Taesm all the time. start off as a special teams player. Is he a quarterback? Is he a tight end? No, he’s a running back now. So, Taesm fills a lot of needs for this team and and I think the more number seven’s in there, the more defensive coordinators don’t like that. Yeah, you have to account for him. So, this is obviously was going to be a difficult one for the Saints. The Rams are now six and two. The Rams are one. The Saints are one and eight. The Rams are six and two. And we knew it was going to be difficult, but it’s good to face a team like this early on. Hopefully the Saints are able to apply some of those lessons they learned next week against Carolina. As you mentioned, a much improved team. Carolina’s a team with a winning record right now. And so now it won’t be a walk in the park. You you go into the season and you know, you always look at schedules and say, “Okay, what’s the team’s record going to be?” And you look at Carolina, you say, “Okay, that might be a couple of games that the Saints can get.” Now all of a sudden that’s kind of up in the air because Carolina’s playing pretty good ball. Yeah. You you Carolina when you open a lot of eyes when you go to Lambeau Field and get a win. Okay. They did a good job. walked off with a field goal today and won that game. But, you know, they’re not asking their quarterback to do to to do the winning for them. Now, you draft a guy number one, you expect him to do all the win. They went out and free agency, signed Rico Dao from the Cowboys. He’s having a really good season. So, that’s why the the the Saints, they they need to clean up this run game because in this division, you’re going to face Von Robinson twice. You have the Panthers who like to run the ball. So, that’s got to be an area of concern for you uh this week in practice, making sure you slow down the running game, make Carolina win the win the game next week through the passing game. Yeah. And because of that, you know, there’s going to be a ample opportunities for Tyler Shuck to get some some chunk yards, some chunk plays because teams are going to say, “We are going to stop the run. We’re going to see if that rookie quarterback can take advantage of what we’re showing him, and we’re going to show him as much as we possibly can to see if we can confuse him.” So hopefully this was a really good learning lesson for Tyler Shuck in this game. Now, his receivers, he got a little bit of help late in the game. I got a couple of big plays from from Rasheed Shahed and from Chris Alave. Just how helpful is that going to be offensively as you go along? Because you got to spread these defenses out. You got to get these guys off the line of scrimmage. So, yeah. And I think the Saints receiver group, you ask anybody around the league, I think the Saints receiver group is is a lot of people would take this group over the group they currently have. There’s some really good players and it’s just about getting more plays. It’s about staying on the field. Open the show with saying you only got 40 plays and the Rams got 77. There’s you only take 40 snaps in a game. You have to be doing something right. you have to be getting a lot of deep plays, scoring explosive plays. Obviously, the Saints didn’t do that today, but um there there’s really a lot of good threats around the field. It’s just about staying on the field, converting third downs, converting fourth downs. You turn the ball over twice and you go 0 for two on fourth down. Basically, those are like turnovers, too. So, you just need to find a way to stay on the field because there are a lot of weapons on this offense that that you can take advantage of defenses. He’s got speed deep. Chris wasn’t targeted as much today. Just I think a lot of that is just the lack of lack of reps on offense. Yeah, Scott mentioned the two turnovers in addition to the shook uh interception. You had a punch out against Alvin Chimera where they lose that fumble. So unfortunately the Saints turn it over a couple times that that’s now 10 turnovers in three games. And for a team that’s young, inexperienced, you got young play at quarterback, you need to handle the football a little bit better. It’s going to be a long week for the defense, too, because they’ve got to do some recovery. Not just not just uh physically but also mentally because you’re talking about a team that again was on the defensively you’re on the field for 77 plays. Yeah. You allow 30 first downs to your 10. So you’re not able to get the ball back for your offense. And so that’s got to be something that the Saints are going to have to be able to shore up when they play against Carolina. Yeah. You just kind of push the reset button. And there were some bright spots defensively. I know it’s hard to find bright spots when you lose a football game. Everybody thinks everything was bad. But Chase Young affected the game. He had some plays today where he was affecting the quarterback, had a sack. Danny Sutzman playing some more reps this week. He had eight tackles. So there there’s guys doing good things. It just needs to come together as a unit. And it’s really about picking your poison. What are we going to shut down first? You have to limit the running game. And you know, if you go into the running game today and you held the Rams to under 100 yards, but Stafford threw for 400 and that’s how you lost the game. I think you can kind of live with that. I think that’s the mindset you have to have going into especially this division when you play the Falcons with Bean Robinson. You play the Carolina Panthers who want to run the ball a lot. You have to load that box and tell your guys on the outside, listen, we’re going to make life a little hard for you, corner Kool-Aid, get ready. You’re going to be a lot of one-on-one. But if you let a team do both, it just gets really hard to play defense. And you better stop that run against the Panthers because that’s exactly what they want to do. They’re going to come up, punch you in the mouth, and see what you have, see what you’re made out of. Uh you mentioned Chase Young. Chase Young really has affected the game these last couple where he’s been able to get a couple of sacks. He’s been able to punch the ball out last week. Uh just talk about the way he’s playing because he’s really getting out there. You talk about an edge rusher, he doesn’t just look the part, he is the part. Yeah. And I it’s a transition. It’s a big transition. A lot of people don’t give it enough uh enough air time. You go from putting a hand down in the dirt as a 4-3D to standing up as an outside linebacker. Chase Cam’s doing it. Uh Grerson’s doing it. It’s it’s a big role change. It’s a big deal. And I think Chase has done a good job. He’s slimmed down. He looks more explosive. His first step looks really good off the line. Obviously the calf injury, he’s recovering from that out a lot early in the season, but make no mistake, when you’re a high draft pick and then you sign a big deal. Expectations rise as well. So, I think he’s done a good job of coming back. They’ve eased him into this defense, but affecting the game. It doesn’t show up in the box score. You one sack, everybody wants multiple sacks, but he’s pressuring the quarterback. And when you pressure the quarterback, that that helps your defensive backs. Yeah. Three sacks. And he’s going to have to add to that total hopefully in the near future. hopefully, preferably against Carolina because the Saints are going to need to apply some pressure to Bryce Young and be able to get that Carolina offense off the field and get the ball back for their offense. Uh some of the things we didn’t have to worry about today for the Saints, kicking game. Yeah, kicking game had a had a clean day in the kicking game and that’s something that you’re going to need at some point and certainly you’re going to need it in a lowscoring game. We don’t know if the Carolina game, you know, we’re just assuming it’s going to be a close game and it helps to have your kicking game kind of back on on par. Yeah. Just the hidden yardage of all three phases and I’ve said before, you want all three phases to play well. But if if you can play well, two out of the three phases, you got a really good chance to win every every single Sunday. The special teams and the kicking game was a big part today. But I agree with you. I think next week’s game, it could be one of those lows scoring games where field position is a big deal. kickoff returns, punt returns, pinning guys down, playing gunnard, tackling guys, and making teams go 90 yards for for uh or making the Panthers go 90 yards for a touchdown. Special teams next week will be key. And it’s rare in the NFL that these games don’t come down to special teams and kicks. And today we saw the Rams miss the extra point with with Justin’s nice rush off the edge. So guys are playing hard. They’re giving their effort and that’s what you like to see too. And the thing that we saw in this game, which usually plays to your advantage, they made the Rams take the long route. long drives, you know, 10, 11 play drives, and at some point you figure, okay, there’ll be a penalty or maybe a turnover or something that’ll flip the ball back over to your offense, but unfortunately the Saints are unable to get off the field on third down. But, I mean, they made them take the long hard road. Unfortunately, you’re playing against a veteran quarterback who’s accustomed to being in some of those situations. Yeah. And I think sometimes people refer to that as Ben, but don’t break defense. But, you know, when you’re going into a game with a young quarterback, the one thing you you don’t want to do as a defensive coach is you don’t want to just send the house, give up two easy scores, deep bombs, because those weapons they have on the outside, they they do make you just play kind of top down coverage. Keep the ball in front of us, make them run the ball, make them take the long route, maybe they’ll fumble, because what you don’t want to do is get down too early with with, you know, feast or famine type defenses. All right. All right. Well, we’ve got coach Kell Moore at the podium for the post game. Um, coming into the game, just the emphasis on the ball. Obviously, they won that two to zero. um controlled so many of the situational football uh plays, they were able to play a lot more efficiently, uh run the football better, but certainly, you know, third downs, red zone, four four uh fourth downs, they really control the game in so many ways. And so, uh we didn’t get enough shots at it. We didn’t get enough opportunities. Uh you know, we got to play obviously a lot better. Um you know, a lot of this comes down to, you know, the details and the fundamentals of the football game. And so, uh you know, sometimes it’s a simple game and we got to we got to play better and uh give ourselves more opportunities. And so, uh, you know, when you look at it, we had 40 snaps on offense, um, you know, probably an all-time low and then, uh, they had 77. So, they obviously controlled the ball for much of this game. How much do you find the third quarter was a big cause for the result? Yeah, they controlled the whole third quarter. Uh, essentially had it, you know, and we had one quick possession turnover and, um, they got it back. And so, obviously they controlled, you know, we got a little bit of momentum going into halftime with that touchdown. felt like there was, you know, we’re right back in it. Uh, we have a chance. And then for them to kind of control the entire quarter of it, go ultimately score. Um, you know, put put theirel in extended lead now and we weren’t able to capitalize. I think it was four of the first five drives where three and out fast starts have been a big issue for you. Why has that be something? Yeah, obviously if we have a solution, we haven’t found it yet. Uh, we got to play better and um I got to give us the best opportunity possible to be successful. We got to uh just play clean football. We just got to play clean football, execute plays, and put ourselves in position. You only had 40 stats, 40 offensive stats. How would you just assess how Tyler did in those 40? I thought there were some positives that came out of the game from Tyler’s perspective. I thought he threw it well, uh delivered. I thought that two-minute drive was big time football before the half. Um you know, even at the end, I thought he made a couple really good plays to quickly get us down in the red zone and weren’t able to run the football and, you know, get a first down there. I know it kind of follows up to that third quarter, so you felt like because the Rams held the ball so long that quarter that that momentum that you had offensively kind of kind of deteriorated at that point. Yeah, I mean real time it had been 40 minutes by the time we got back. So, uh you know, obviously we got to we got to do a better job there. And uh and then when we do have our opportunity, we got we can’t fumble the football. So, we fumbled it and uh turned it right back over to them. Yeah, we’ll keep an eye on that. Uh obviously Jack and Ty, you know, they had an ankle and so we’ll just see see how that goes. Was the decision for to see the field a little bit less after the fumble intentional. We’re just we’re just trying to get get things going and so uh you know Alvin’s a big part of this thing and so um it was unfortunate we had turnover there. Um you know they won the battle two today. Obviously a lot of things go into this but the decision keeps oh just receiving start. Yeah. Yeah. We got we got to find a way to to start fast and obviously we’re not we’re not there. Uh we got to find a way to start fast, feel a you know some early success in the game. Uh they have a really high uh success rate when they lead at halftime and so you got to do everything you can to put yourself in position to be successful early in the game. What were you seeing on that that challenge whether Stafford was down or not? Yeah, just uh just trying to give oursel an opportunity there. felt like uh you know I obviously didn’t see it until after I thrown the flag cuz we’re we’re the road team and so uh we felt like there was some compelling it was quick and so we made a decision to see if we can steal a possession there which would have been a huge opportunity you know early in the third. Do you have someone you consult with in those challenges or is it mostly just No, it’s upstairs. Yeah, upstairs. They’re they’re obviously looking at it and um you know we understand there’s risk associated with those things too. What’s the explanation on it came out? They down. Yeah, they said he was down. What are some things you hope to build on in terms of how Tyler played today moving forward? Yeah, I thought u you know, I think operationally I felt like he was very very calm. He he executed at a pretty high level. I thought he handled some adverse situations really well, which is obviously a positive going into these situations. He didn’t let um those other factors impact his play. I thought um you know, even his turnover, he’s at least, you know, he’s he was a fourth down. He’s trying to give us a shot. Outside of that, I felt like, you know, he was executing the plays and, um, you I thought there was a great sequence there when he made, you know, a few plays really quickly in the fourth quarter. You know, completion, completion, completion, and we got right down the field and, um, you know, we just weren’t able to run the football there. From your perspective, why was it so difficult today to get Matthew Stafford out because he was kind of put together that offense? Yeah. Uh, they had a really good balanced offense. Uh, you know, I thought they were able to, uh, you know, run the football, uh, you know, and pass the football and play in those mixed downs. And so, when you look at it, they they had a lot of control of the game because of that. Uh, they were able to, you know, run the football, create the play action opportunities, uh, play in positive third down situations, and, uh, weren’t able to get the rush and the passing, obvious passing ones. Was that sequence, I think it was three straight plays, get lining up the quarterback, Tyler off the field. Was that by design or was it kind of after that big run to starting had a package available anticipated staying with Taesm for a few plays and uh you know we had that available you know it’s um you know I felt like Taesm gave us a little bit of something there in the run game uh which was a positive and um you know gave us gave us some positive things out of it. What was the uh the challenge today on the defensive side when it came to those play action roll outs to the tight endathmed like that came up a few times. Yep. Eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes, details and fundamentals. Um, you know, they do a great job of run the football and then marrying the action game off it and um, you know, we got to stick with our assignments and um, you know, eyes within that. You obviously have a run fit, but um, you know, you got to coverage responsibility as well. And so it’s it’s a stressor. It’s challenging. There’s nothing easy about it, but uh, they they had a lot of success because of it. We kind of ask this every week that the mood after you know a loss like this. Yeah, it’s always tough. Um, these guys put everything they can into each and every weekend an NFL football game. And, uh, there’s a lot that goes into it. A lot that emotionally, physically that they pour into this. And it’s challenging. You know, we’re going through a challenging storm. And, uh, we face some adversity. And, um, you know, we got to keep pushing. We got to keep pushing together. I think that’s the thing. I I love these guys keep battling. Um, you know, this is going to be one of those you get through this storm, you’re going to tell one heck of a story. And, uh, but we got to get there. And so, we’re not there yet. We got to keep getting better. Got to keep finding ways to uh you know narrow the margins and give ourselves the best opportunity to be successful. Is it a difficult game to evaluate Tyler just because of the low number of snaps snap? I mean it’s going to be a great opportunity. You know it’s first first start in the NFL. Um you know certainly there were some positives in there. Uh thought he handled himself well and so uh you know we didn’t get enough opportunities to to compete. You guys and the Rams had a formidable pass rush. How do you think Tyler handled that? specifically some of the movement he showed being able to get out of the pocket. Thought some of his his off schedule stuff was a positive. I thought he handled himself well. Stepped up in the pocket. I think that’s always the biggest challenge for young quarterbacks is step up, not step out and get, you know, go behind the rush because that’s where these guys are going to chase you down quickly. Thought he had some really good step ups and uh kept his eyes downfield. So, uh certainly that’s that’s a really tough pass rush, but I thought he did some good things. All right, thanks guys. But just proud of the way we kind of fought throughout the whole game. You know, we didn’t get a lot of opportunities and when we had them, we didn’t take advantage of them to the best of our ability. I think starting fast was um something we tried to emphasize. We just didn’t didn’t get it done there. And obviously, you start behind the eightball, it’s tough to to come back with against that team. You know, they they ran the ball. They controlled the clock really well. I think only had three plays in the third quarter and um so just just tough from that aspect, but we’ll kind of learn from it. We got to keep getting better and we’ll you know, we’ll get back to it. You most comfortable in that that final minute driving the the offense out. Did you feel like you were at the most comfort you’ve been so far in that game? Yeah, I mean I felt felt pretty comfortable throughout the whole game just seeing everything wise. They had some some some big stops on those third downs and a couple short yardages and that were tough to um just tough for us. We got to be able to execute in those in those moments and um and keep the chains moving. Um but yeah, I think when we were playing fast, you know, operating wise, all that stuff um you know, felt felt really good, but um at the end of the day wasn’t wasn’t good enough. So, that momentum was kind of just the Rams hold the ball so long in the third quarter. Did you feel like that that momentum you had built up at the end of the first half kind of dissipated? waiting so long. Yeah, I mean, you know, they had a 10-minute drive or whatever it was. So, that obviously you got to, you know, I was doing everything that we could and keeping the guys juiced up as much as we could throughout that whole that whole time and got to stay ready and at the end of the day. Um, just didn’t get it done. But, you know, kudos to them. They’re a really good team. Um, just holding on the ball, operating, driving, but at the end of the day, we got to we got to be better as an offense when we get those ops. So, um, starts from me and we’ll we’ll continue to get better. Seems like like there’s been a lot of times this season where it’s like a third and six play going like a five yard catch like a lot of stuff short of the sticks. Is that is that just some of the options that you’re looking for aren’t there beyond the sticks or how would you kind of Yeah, just just kind of football happens that way sometimes. You know, you you know, you’re I think operation wise everything that you’re looking for it’s right there. you know, you just come up, you know, that much short and um whether that’s, you know, I think I don’t know if that’s on anybody other than they just made a good play right at the sticks and we just got to find a way to get past it and we as as a whole unit, you know, um yeah, I think we’ll look at it and see how we can kind of be better there because obviously those third downs are crucial and then fourth downs we got to um convert as well. So, um, yeah, I’m not sure, at least looking at it right now, but I think it just it sucks when you come short in those moments when it’s kind of everything that you were drawing up and it was right decision, right footwork, right read. Um, but yeah, did you walk us through stepped up and found Chris? Yeah, it was just um, you know, they kind of dropped out in cover two there. was looking to throw it to Sheid on the quick, you know, option route and then just kind of that was a big emphasis with this pass rush to, you know, scramble drill was going to be alive the whole game and um so stepped up and found him over the middle. It was a really good play by him just staying alive um and getting some yards. So was good to kind of get explosive there and you know we got to find more ways to um kind of extend those plays, find his quick options, but it was really good by him. What happened to the end of that first half that that touchdown did you want? Just what did you see there? Yeah, we were trying to we’re trying to um trying to get Vle get get Vele an option. He ended up getting double there sitting back and in and shell and um just kind of went back to that third progression and Jawan was was sitting there right over the middle and he made a really good play um after the catch to get in the end zone. So wasn’t exactly how it was what we were trying to dial up, but it was just kind of great from the whole offense. Great by the job of the O line, you know, hanging in there so we could um progress to him. Can you walk us through what we were seeing what you were seeing on that fourth down interception? Yeah, we were trying to get the ball to Chris there one-on-one. Um, so was really kind of selling out there for that. We had a, you know, a route dialed up for him. Um, reset back and then to was the under to Taesm was was probably what I could have ripped. Ended up losing sight of him and fourth down I just got to get out of my hand. So I wasn’t, you know, can’t can’t end that drive with a sack. So it was just trying to give she a chance and uh, he made a good play on it. Uh, you were able to get some completions late and kind of get into a rhythm. Is that something that you can kind of build on moving forward in terms of that kind of feeling? Yeah, 100%. I think every sing I think operation wise um was feeling good the whole time. We just were short on a couple third downs early on and and didn’t get a lot of opportunities. We only had 40 plays so and that’s on all of us. Um so it was good to kind of get in a rhythm there and um we just got to find a way to to finish those drives. What was your your mindset coming into today? I mean you had a whole week to like were you feeling good coming into the game? any nerves for your first starting? No, I think it it was just get good to get out there and operate and just kind of that was my whole mindset. It was just it’s a football game, you know, it’s what a great opportunity to go against um a great team and obviously somebody who I looked looked up, you know, to growing up with in Stafford and but for me it was just don’t make it bigger than what it is. And I think at the end of the day just going out there and operating felt really good but sucks because we didn’t, you know, didn’t capitalize on a lot of it and we and we lost. So, uh, we’re going to keep kind of getting better each week in practice and, um, it’ll kind of stack and continue to grow. We asked about the end of the first half a few times, but kind of getting that first touchdown, like, did you feel like you needed that for for confidence or at that point? Was it just like, okay, that’s one, you know, we have a lot more we need to do. Like, kind of what was your um, I guess a little bit of both. It’s obviously great when you when you you you score a touchdown, especially to Jawan and who you got some some history with. But at the end of the day, it’s just it was good to kind of understand that, you know, you go you operate and you we kind of get those those plays. It’s nothing anything crazy, you know, it’s when you’re doing your job, that’s what we expect. So, and we got to we got to be able to to create more of those um opportunities. So, uh, well, like I said before, you know, we got a great great opponent in Carolina and and in a divisional game and, um, especially go out there and and can kind of stack this week, figure out where we can be better and go and go operate. Appreciate you guys. Well, we heard from coach Kell Moore and from quarterback Tyler Shuck, who threw his first NFL touchdown. One interesting point, uh, Scott, Coach Moore mentioned how he likes the way Tyler operated in the two-minute, and he seems to operate fairly well in in the hurry up. Do you maybe we should expect to see a little bit more of that in the future? Yeah, I I think the tempo of the offense is important because tempo can can increase the number of plays. You know, we open the show, talk about the limited plays. Coach Moore got up there automatically, first thing he said, hey, we only made 40 plays. That can’t happen. So, increasing the tempo on offense definitely. And and when you watch Tyler play in that two-minute drive, that’s the that’s the section of the game I think any Saints fan, any coach, any player on team will say that was that that’s what we want to see more of. And he did a good job. Got in rhythm, two-minute drive. Um, but yeah, if you need to increase the tempo. Now, the downside to increasing tempo is if you go three and out, your defense is looking at you like, “What are you doing to us?” So, if you’re going to increase the tempo, you got to get some first downs. But, you know, some guys just operate better in that rhythm. All right. Well, we’ll see what happens as we go along. This has been the Saints postgame show. I’m John Deaser for Super Bowl champion Scott Shanley. We will see you again next week when the Saints play the Carolina Panthers.

This Team is a joke
Moore is doing wayyyy better than Allen could ever dream of, the record proves it 💯!!! So glad Carrbage isn't on the team either. Now we have 2 great QBs, this team has put the entire League on notice 💯🔥!!!
Saints actually showed something positive on the ONLY relevant question mark at this point – The QB Shough had really nice passes and ran the offense better than expected even though the supporting cast of rb and wr and o-line played terrible with drop passes, fumbles, and missed blocking assignments against one of the best teams in the league Shough in just a few completed passes actually showed the upside potential in terms of his own development – more than Rattler who I had wanted to get the start at the start of the season, but now see is not a starting category qb in the nfl. We now must evaluate Shough the remainder of the season to know if he is or is not a starting future quality qb. If not then we need to get another qb next year.
Tell me why is Juwan Johnson, Caesar Salad Ruiz, and Trevor Penalty Penning still playing?? Go with your young players and see what you got for next yr
We need to scrap this organization and start over from the top. Period.
The only players on offense who impressed were shough and olave. Juwan couldve been there but of course he cant go a game without dropping a ball. Our CBs are doodoo and that showed when lined up against a top 3 receiving duo. Definitely need to pick defense with our 1st rounder this year and see if we can get some interior linemen in free agency or something
I watched a game with a bad team that has been mismanaged for the past several years. The only question of relevance for the remainder of this year is to evaluate Shough over multiple games so we will know if he does or does not have personal individual upside potential to become a franchise level QB – if not, then we at least will know if we need to get another QB for next year! Rattler has been evaluated and been properly assessed as not being a future franchise quality QB. As for today specifically, I expected a bad outing from the start because the Rams are a good team on the road. Shough actually played better than I had expected in the limited time the Saints actually had the ball. He at least has the quick release and sharp passing capacity of a quality QB – does he have the field general mental capacity? We will have to see – but he himself with a good TD pass and only one late game 4th down interception did better today than I had expected given the fact that the Rams are a tough intro test on the road and the rest of the Saints team played as if they were in the toilet with fumbles, dropped passes and missed blocking assignments! We must use the remainder of the season to evaluate Shough to see if we do or do not need another qb next year. If Shough improves, then keep him. If not then either draft another qb or sign a FA next year.
