Jaguars Players on Calais Campbell, Prep for Cardinals | Jacksonville Jaguars

I think I think it’s fundamentals. I mean, I think Cole’s a smart guy, like knowing the offensive playbook, knowing what to do at each position, but uh the fundamentals you have to get down pretty good to be able to move that much and that fast, too, like from week to week to week. Uh but he’s got it. He’s doing a hell of a job and he’s going to continue to get better. I know you’ve been more locked in here, but in your past, you’ve been floating all over the place. I mean, do you do you enjoy that the versatility or is it is it really hard? Yeah, I think it’s tough. I think there’s some enjoyment. There’s some like fun aspects to it. There’s challenges that are enjoying. Um, but you know, I’m at right guard right now and it’s been good. Yeah. I mean, you feel like you can settle in. I mean, do you feel like you’re settled in more often than past seasons? Yeah, definitely more often than past season. It’s just like continuing to get better, continue to work, uh, find your groove and stay in it and keep it going. Uh, one last one. What does it say about this group that you can plug and play so many different guys and have at times this year? Yeah. Yeah, it’s pretty cool. Well, I don’t think it’s super common to have on lines to have a couple guys that can move spots relatively easily. Uh to have a group like that really just shows that the guys are bought in, invested in like putting the team above themselves, which is great to see. Thanks, man. For me, um just the I mean, you guys ran the ball 47 times last week. That as an offensive line has to be what you guys are looking for. Not 47 every week, but to carry the momentum, right? Yeah. No, it’s great. I mean, we as an offense, we love to win. We love to score points. And if that means running the ball or passing the ball, then that’s great. We found our groove with throwing the ball a little bit and whatever it takes to win, that’s what we want to do. Give us the scouting report on Kas Campbell when you see him. He’s great. I mean, I was a teammate with him. I played against him. Uh he played here for a long time and he’s a he’s an all-time great person, great leader. Um it’ll be a challenge, but I’m excited about it. What about his size is so challenging? I mean, he’s really long. He’s really tall. He he knows all the moves. He’s been in the league for a while and he does a good job of manipulating what the offensive lineman thinks with his length and with his size. Uh, and just takes some patience and some aggressiveness too. But he’s a great player and he’ll be good. You know, our vets and have been doing it a while. So, we all get football and understand it. And, uh, I tell Brendon all the time, I love the way he plays, how he comes off the ball. And I think that like even though he’s probably not vetted as far as a years, I love the way he plays and I think that I’ve told him before that makes me want to play harder coming off the ball and stuff just seeing how he strikes and stuff. So that’s just kind of the culture we’re trying to build in the room. Liam said that um Angelou is like one of the best tight ends coaches he’s ever worked with. What is it about him that um where does he where does all that success kind of come from? I guess I say it again. So Liam Cohen said earlier today that um you know your co your RA Angelo I think is what so he’s one of the best tight ends coaches that he’s ever worked with. Um you know why do you think um he’s getting such praise I guess from the head coach? I mean, you could see as the, you know, again, like you said, like there’s no drop off the tight end. Like that’s kind of the culture that’s been built in the room. Like guys going to be physical and they’re going to strain and, you know, we love for it to show up in the game and um, you know, that’s going to pop big runs. Just an idea of just your season overall, having to, you know, kind of fight for it in special teams and up and down and finally getting your chance, right? Um, yeah. I think that’s one that’s something I’ve battled, you know, being an undrafted rookie, you know, coming in when I was back in Buffalo. Like, every day you come in, you got to work to stay. You know, they’re always bringing in guys, you know, to replace you. And, uh, you know, that’s just part of the league. And, you know, you just got to keep your head down, keep grinding, and, you know, we talked at the beginning of the season when I was on practice squad, and it just, you know, never changed the mindset. Just going to come in, keep my head down, work, and when that opportunity comes, just be ready for it. Is that somewhat the personality of this football team too, you think? Oh, for sure. And I mean, we got a lot of young guys and um on this team and that’s just like every day like they’ll realize that you know next year there’ll be more guys coming in and that’s just the mindset like there can’t be no drop off and if there is they’ll put the next guy in there. Talking to some people out in Arizona, they’re excited to see you. Obviously you spent your entire career out there. What does it mean going back out to the desert to take on the Cardinals on Sunday? Another opportunity for a win. Um, keep stacking W’s for the Jags. And, uh, on to the next one. Third trip to the West Coast as well. Already winner out in San Francisco and Las Vegas. Obviously, you guys got the routine down now. Another trip out west. What’s your thought on Arizona this year? Obviously, you know, a lot of those guys. Uh, yeah. I mean, a lot of new players. It’s a it’s a new year. So, um I think to go in there and be like, “Oh, I know I know what they’re doing or I know the players of um there’s been a lot of time and and distance in between when I was there.” And so, it it’s playing what I see, not not what I think I know or what I think I’m going to see. It’s just um going out there and executing calls. Final question from me. Will it mean something to you if the fans give you that nice ovation like expected out there? that mean something to you personally? Yeah, the I mean the fans always gave me more than I deserved. Um so so yeah, that’ll be pretty special. Vince, appreciate it. Awesome. Real quick. Um but that that organization kept believing in you even with the injury stuff going on. That has to go a long way for what they felt about you and and the way you feel about that that group, right? My wife’s been trying to get me to talk about feelings for a long time now. Okay. Yeah. So today ain’t the day. Got it. Um this defense though getting after the quarterback last week. Um what changed? What was different or is it just the mindset continuing to grow as the year goes on? Yeah, I think it’s just that that mindset and opportunity um when opportunity meets preparation. Um it it was awesome to see. Uh that was last week. We’re we’re we’re focused on Arizona this week and we’re uh excited for the opportunity. What’s the challenge with Brassette? I mean, obviously throwing it a bunch last week, completing a bunch, trying to get back in that game, but guy’s been at it for a little while now in the league. Yep. I feel like uh he he’s fairly close to a coach playing a position in terms of he knows the progression. He knows exactly kind of where the read should be and his timing is impeccable. And then if it’s not there, he’s got his checkdown and they they’ve been able to to create quite a few yards on just checkown plays and stuff. um just being able to kind of keep chunk chunking away down the field. Um we’ve seen Kas before, but um just memories of of that season with with Kas when your first year in Yeah. I mean I mean yeah I mean Kas was a big big influence in my career coming in as a rookie and being with a guy that’s been playing at a high level for so long and that’s I’m sorry and that wants to give the knowledge off and somebody that you know is myself that wanted to receive it. It was awesome to be a part of and I’m very thankful for him but being on the opposite side of him and playing against him. I don’t like it. I don’t like it. I’m keep it at that. How do you make sure that you guys keep the standard of what you guys set last week against the Chargers going as you get through the last seven weeks? I mean, I think it starts in practice. I think that week started in practice. We didn’t just wake up Sunday was like, we’re going to play as hard as we can, you know? No respect, but it just start it started in practice. And I think today we had a good focus. Coach Cohen took care of us today on, you know, having us with hats, take care of our bodies so we can come out tomorrow and fly around. Um, so that’s that’s a plus. But today was was very focused. Guys was locked in. Guys were communicating. Um and guys were just doing what they were supposed to do. And so that’s a good start to the week. Um and then come back tomorrow, get the game plan, practice fast, and correct the mistakes that we made in practice, move on to Friday, and so on. Tim Patrick said that Cohen’s probably the most relatable head coach he’s played for and he’s played for a bunch. But do you agree with that? That he’s pretty relatable and lie. Yeah. From your stand. Yeah, of course. Uh he’s very communive. Um you know, he he you know, he definitely tells us the real uh every day, which is which I can respect good or bad. Like I can respect somebody that’s you know, as a man giving me I don’t like sugar coating. I like, you know, point blank and he gives it to you straight. And, you know, for me, I I can’t do nothing but respect that. So, when he talks with the conviction of when we lost or when we won, it’s like, you know, it’s coming from the heart. And, you know, I I respect that a lot. You know, I’ve had a lot of coaches in my That was so disrespectful. Jordan Lewis. Jordan Lewis threw that hat at me. Can you believe that? Jordan Lewis. Jordan Lewis. You You savage. You savage. Yes. I’m I’mma sue you. Um, but yeah, I’ve had a lot of coaches in my career here and uh, you know, he’s definitely the youngest, which kind of helps. And so he kind of hopefully he he understands what kind of we go through as young players and and he takes care he takes really good care of I know he’s probably the most he’s probably the best coach take care of our bodies throughout the weeks on uh, seeing what we need, you know, the flow of practice, how did that look. So, he’s definitely taking care of us and this the best I felt going into a week 13 12, you know, game. So, yeah. You talked about now that you’re one of the vets in the room for two young defensive ends. What was it like just for you from your perspective to see them kind of make the plays they did on Sunday when you went back and watch? Yeah, I mean, it was awesome, man. I just cuz I see them I see the hard work they put in every single day. uh you know those are those are some rooks that know their role and that and that just accept it that come in take advantage of every opportunity that they can and uh you know want to make those plays as soon as they get on the field like they know they’re not going to get 30 40 50 snaps a game they know they may only get five they may get 10 they may get three that every opportunity they do get out there they’re going to make the best of it and and it’s showing uh so hopefully they continue to to play more and we get a we get a good better rotation going on to get them to play and and uh play fast physical and really like they always done. Would you even want to play as long as if I’m getting paid and I and I have vet days like he has. I don’t think Clay’s practice anymore. You know what I’m saying? So yeah, I would definitely do it. I don’t know. My wife would want me to. 17 a year. About 17 days a year. Yeah. Yeah. I’d say probably like 23. He’ll probably do a play here and there, but yeah. When you get Yeah. especially play with his back. You know what I’m saying? He got excuses to where he can take himself off and stuff. So, uh, but much respect to him. It’s hard to do that. Merced, you got Mercedes Lewis is doing the same thing. You know what I’m saying? You got Aaron Rogers quarterback, different position, but you know, kickers that are 50 years old, you know, that don’t practice. That’s what it is. You don’t practice. Are you surprised he’s still playing? I mean, he’s No, man. The conversations that we’ve had when he was here about what he wants at this point of his career, you know, he wants to see his kids, you know, watch him play to be out there when he makes the Pro Bowl, when he is all pro, when he’s around the guys, being in the locker room. Like, those are the memories that he wants his kids to have. And, you know, his son’s old enough to not kind of start to be around the guys and understand what he does. And he I know Klay is living that up right now. Is there one singular thing that you still have kas in your mind sometimes when you’re working out, practicing? Anything? I mean, is there anything that he taught you that Okay. Come. Okay. Uh yeah, man. I remember uh you was wearing that weird Brent that was getting you a little bit. But uh weird. It could be me. I’m the problem. I was on your wavelength there. He took it too. Yeah. But no, I got what you’re saying at the end of the day. Um but yeah though um I remember coming into uh you know the preseason last preseason game I got I had a cast on my hand broke my hand or something I don’t remember I broke my hand I had a cast on and I wasn’t playing like well and he kind of sensed that about me going into that game and then I remember just sitting on the bus he looked back at me just like Josh if you was a dog in college you can be a dog in the league. And then it took those words to realize like Damn, you’re right. And then I just went crazy that game. And then that kind of propelled me to the rest of the season starting against Kansas City knowing that like I’m going to whoop the guy in uh Eric Fischer or whoever the tackles was and I went out there improved it and then that gave me even more confidence uh to go out there and to play fast week in and week out. What’s the What are some priorities against this Arizona offense? They got a bunch of backup guys going banged up a little bit. Backup quarterback. Mhm. I mean I mean hey that down bro. Take your interview. The disrespect. No respect. You got the sack record and everything. No respect. They don’t love me here. But uh you see they quiet down. Um ask that question again. I’m sorry. Arizona offense. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. I got you this week. Stop the run. Um stopping the run. Obviously, they had 47 attempts uh 47 completions out of 53 attempts. Uh which is very impressive no matter win or loss. Like that is that’s like Miles Garrett getting five sacks and losing game. It’s like it’s so impressive, but like you know you you know what I’m saying? So it’s very impressive that you can be able to do that and complete as many passes. Um so we have to know how they did it, why they did it. They kind of It’s kind of It’s It’s weird because when I see it, I don’t know if nobody else seen it, but when I first saw the tape on Sunday, I started watching it on Sunday so I can kind of flush it all and get reset. It kind of reminded me of the Houston game. You know, they’re off how they did their offense. It’s like they were down, but they were still in the heavy personnels, still drop back passing. I mean, still, you know, play action pack passing while they were down. like they didn’t truly get to throw open, got to score, got to move the ball down the field until the last couple minutes of the fourth quarter. So, we have to play sound football up to that point. If we’re up by who knows how many or if we’re down, like we have to play sound football until it’s time to like, all right, now they’re abandoning the run. Now, we can drop back. Now, they’re not chipping me cuz I’m expecting chips and no. So, I have to get my mind right and adapt to the calls that we’re doing. So, and I kind of know it’s going to be a fourth quarter game whenever I want to feel like or in a two-minute situation where it’s like, well, I can pin my airs back and I can go win a one-on-one. You know what I’m saying? I know I’m probably not going to get those until two-minute or a fourth quarter. So, being within the game plan, trusting what we’re calling, being in the right spot, dropping if I need a drop, rushing when I need a rush, stunting when I need a stunt, it’s all important. And that’s why we got to communicate and be on the same page.

OL Patrick Mekari, TE Quintin Morris, LB Dennis Gardeck, DE Josh Hines-Allen speak with the media in the locker room following Wednesday’s practice as the team prepares for Week 12 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
