Drake Maye on the Offensive Line: “Those Guys Deserve a Lot of Credit.” | Patriots Press Conference

What’s going on? What we got do for what we got to do for the rest of time? Y’all sitting here. Think a few questions to hopefully like game plan. Um just thinking about end of half, end of game situations for you. What What do you think um makes you successful and the team successful um? Yeah, like first practice. put a lot of emphasis in, you know, knowing the situations, knowing um, you know, what type of mode we’re in, if we want to try to drain some clock or um, try to get some points. And I think the guys have just responded well. They took practice to to the games and I think um, it goes with practicing them, you know, practicing back in training camp and full speed and um, the first few times against our defense too many, we weren’t very good. So just practicing against the good defense and um in the game in the half and just uh just trying to the more experience I get with them I think you know the better we are becoming and improving. You’re at the top of the NFL quarterback stats. I’m just curious do you look at that stuff? Have you ever looked at that stuff? No, you know I just hope to be the top and wins. That’s the biggest thing. Um just trying to you know win and um I think you all other stuff you know comes you know after that and part of the reason probably I am because we haven’t had a buy yet. Um so um really just uh focus on you know one week at a time and I think a lot of you know players on this team are doing great things to to help me and um our defense is playing great so um it’s been fun. We got to keep going. Drake, how do you work on your accuracy, your you know completion percentages at the top of the league. I’m just curious if you feel like you’ve become a much more accurate quarterback over the last year or so or if it’s just sort of an innate skill that you Yeah. Yeah. Um I think just being competitive. I think that’s the biggest thing. I’m competitive. I want to um you know make good throws. I want to um you know complete passes in tight windows and um give good ball placement for catch and run. you I’ve um that’s one of my you know high school coaches back in my head coach used to tell me you know he’s talking about yards after catch and ball placement and um I’ve you know try to take it from there to everywhere I’ve gone and I think um I think just actually is one of the biggest things and you see so many great quarterbacks that are so accurate and I think it’s a great compliment when somebody says you’re accurate and I think that’s what you try to work towards and um over you know since I got in the league it’s something that just tried to establish myself from the get-go is be try to be accurate. Stefan Digs said today that he went up to you and kind of thanked you for the way you throw the ball because he’s playing through this like broken finger. He said, um, what was it like to have him come up and say that and just what’s it like to know that he’s kind of playing through? You know, Seth’s probably dramatic every time he gets he lays on the ground and acts like he just got hit by 18 wheeler or something. Um, so he’s uh No, he’s awesome. I think just try to throw catch up a ball that goes with being accurate. Um, he’s uh he’s awesome. He’s got great hands. He’s one of the best hands I’ve seen. He uh he’s effortless catching it. Um you know, when it gets cold out, he likes to catch it more with his body. Um but he’s uh you know, when when the lights are on, he’s you got one of the best hands in the league. And you know, anywhere you all seen all the catches he made back end zone, toe tap, sideline. No, it doesn’t matter. He’s uh he’s making the catches a lot of trust with me throwing, you know, his way. And um he’s he’s been he’s been fun to play with. Drake, how impressed are you with the comeback and stuff he’s making, given what he’s doing coming off 28? Yeah, I think he’s, you know, got to be um just proud of himself. I think that’s one of the biggest things he is, you know, proud of how he’s how hard he’s worked, how far he’s come. I told him that the other day. I think he hit like his one year since since surgery. Just um you know, proud of the way he’s, you know, handled what he’s, you know, been through, you know, ACL surgery and and bouncing back and coming making plays, being a, you know, ready to go week one. Uh that says a lot about him as a as a football player, as a person. uh how much he’s he’s worked and I think he’s you’ve got to be in the running for you know player of the year, come back player of the year. I mean um just as much as he’s done for this football team and leadership wise and and playwise and um just do my part to give him the football. He’s a he’s a great player and I think he deserves a a lot of credit for himself and the people who helped him to get back on time and he’s been a a huge difference. I think that you’re joking about Seth, you know, laying on the turf and being a drama. Like how much more comfortable are you giving players and teammates a hard time now that you’re in your second year? Yeah, you know, I grew up the youngest of four boys. I always been, you know, part of me to to be give people a hard time and be the instigator. So, that’s my kind of my personality. You know, I think, uh, just kind of the more you get to know me, probably the more it comes out. And I think, um, yeah, Steph is, uh, he’s funny when, um, a lot of guys got a little funny things. So, it’s a fun group. Drake, the, uh, the offensive line has improved quite a bit from your rookie season to this year. Just how have you kind of seen that, uh, you know, manifest itself? And how good is it to have those guys? Yeah, those guys are um you know the heartbeat of this offense, this football team. Um it starts with them. Um it starts with me and them and I think you know I’m going give them enough credit and you probably need to tell more how much of a a great job they’re doing. Um they’re playing their butts off every week, you know, week in week out. Um I think they’re just man, they’re uh they’re protecting me. I think uh you know, like I said, a lot of the sacks are my fault and I apologize to them for the numbers or tickets or whatever you look at. Um I think they’re they’re playing every week. They’re you know, doing a great job. I mean, my body feels great and I think it’s a lot of credit to them and what they’re doing and you know, how much they care to protect me and those guys are um, you know, a great group and those guys deserve a lot of credit. You’ve only taken one sack a piece in the last two games. Do you feel like when you say a lot of the sacks that you have taken are on you? Are you seeing anything differently? Do you feel in your play that you’re doing something differently in those games? No, I think just take to heart how much they’re working up front and know that, you know, me getting the ball out or checking it down or throwing incompletes more important than um taking a hit or taking a sack and getting some lost yardage. You know, coach is huge on staying ahead of the chains and um that’s their emphasis every week to stay, you know, be good on first down, be good on, you know, make it third and short. And I think that’s been my emphasis and I think I’ve taken a heart, you know, those those numbers and the stat statistics. Um sorry, I got speech problems in the huddle. They always make fun of me. uh statistics and then uh you know from there just try to um yeah just just know how hard they’re working and and give them you know what they deserve and I think that’s a you know a low uh sack number because they they do a great job. How does this Bengals defense put stress into you guys? Yeah, I think um you know really I think the biggest thing with them is they make plays on the football. You know in the secondary they make plays on the football. Um they tried to sky some coverage. Um they got some guys on the edge that can get after. Um, we’ll see who’s out there. But I think, you know, they got a good guy inside that’s played there for a long time. And BJ Hill, um, who’s a good player, he’s active. He does good things. And I think the linebackers are fast. You know, play one in college. Played Barrett in college. And they’re fast. They make plays. And, um, yeah, we got to have, you know, all hands on deck. They match routes, you know, pretty well at times. And, um, you know, sometimes there’s zone stuff. They they got a lot of eyes on the quarterbacks. They make plays on the football and tips and and things like that. So, um, we got we got a tough challenge. Joe was um he’s been banged up, but he was a full participant in practice today. Um so I’m just curious from your vantage point. What would it be like to have the opportunity to go head-to-head against him? Yeah. Um you know, shoot, I know he’s a great player. He’s done um you know, some great things in this league and he’s uh he’s fun to watch when he’s uh when they’re playing and when he’s healthy. So uh I wish the best luck of him for his injury. Um but same time we’re competing. So you know, you want to win and um you don’t think it matters near who it is on the other side. We’re trying to win. How is your rel how is your relationship with Kyle Williams growing obviously from the summer but also recently with his increased role and how difficult is it trying to build that rapport when you’re this kind of deep end of in the season that maybe haven’t had as many Yeah, I don’t think it’s Yeah, I don’t think it’s difficult. I think it’s just you know it’s important for your guys like um that may get thrown in there, you know, down the road or, you know, at times in a crucial moment, you know, in a two-minute drill when guys are tired. It’s great to get work with Kyle, get work practice, get work in practice and um he’s made some plays and I think um you know I’ve great given him some great opportunities to make plays in the football which you know I feel bad about but um he’s going to be a good player. He’s kind of learning the the ropes and I think he’s kind of um you adjusted well to kind of get thrown in there and you know looking forward to seeing what he does you know kind of down the road. We’ve seen um kind of Randre start and have that like kind of starting role then with him injured Trayvon stepped in. Uh was Randre kind of nearing his return? What’s it what’s your excitement level to kind of see both of them have that kind of like one two main punch? Yeah. Well, one two punch, you know, I think they’re, you know, Andre is a great player. He’s he’s he’s awesome to have back there and um he always knows what to do. He makes plays. I love his little, you know, two foot jump cut. He’s one of the best in the league at um you know, watching from now the best seat in the house when he does it. And then um you know, he’s great coming out of the back field. Him and Trayvon do a lot of the, you know, similar things. They run hard. They run people over. Um they can make you miss. Um they’re smart. They want to be good. And um it’s going to be good. um you when Andre gets back to to have him out there and it’s been awesome for Trayon to get the reps and I think those you that room is has really come alive for us and you’ve seen it you know with them and the offensive line and the run game. So we got to keep it going. Thank you guys. Classroom.

  1. love that Mike reiss asked about the opponent for this upcoming week… who cares what he thinks about stef saying he throws a catchable ball… ask about the upcoming game..

  2. Honestly it's just gonna be move Jared Wilson back to center, find a stud guard to replace him and draft a swing tackle to eventually replace my dude Moses as he ages out and the line is fixed.
The Will Campbell haters (Felger & Maz) have gone awfully quiet.

Bradbury is doing his best but… 🥴
Yeah I can't wait for Wilson to move back to center.
