This was the biggest mistake in franchise history not at the QB position. Guy was the leader of the D and in the prime of his career. Duke should be fired for the hindsight on this alone.
Reminds me of this quote from Duke regarding Tee. I wonder why he didn’t feel the same about Bates:
“No, I’m not in the business of making other teams better. I’m in the business of making the Cincinnati Bengals better, and so trading Tee Higgins is not on my mind. That’s their problem. They want a receiver? Go find your own, you know. In my opinion, Tee Higgins is a good piece for the Cincinnati Bengals. So the trade stuff is a little ridiculous right now.”
People on this sub hate to hear it. We went to the Super Bowl Because of our defense that year. Our offense was incredibly mediocre during that run and people seem to think we were dropping +35 points every game then, which was not the case.
“But but but but but his contract!”… is totally affordable. Give me a break.
It’s $16M AAV, Geno Stone and Sheldon Rankins combined for $19.5 last year. Wouldn’t we have rather had Bates? Wouldn’t most of the armchair GMs in this subreddit have predicted we’d have rather had Bates?
Could still have Bates & Reader for $27M/year that we’re spending on bums across the board.
not big deal, his stats affect only 44 plays since 2022, never understand why those stats are important to most people, it is tackles that should be the most important, how was his tackles???????
I knew it was over when the Bengals once again went all in on WRs over defense or Oline.
How you could watch a guy intercept Mahomes at the most clutch moment of the season and let him walk is beyond stupid.
WRs don’t produce wins. They produce stats. It’s been this way for 100 years.
Simply put, it’s despicable.
I don’t think they regret anything. They do things, the way they do them. With the awareness that it doesn’t always help the team.
Also zero playoff appearances for both.
The one that got away
Jesus Fucking Christ.
I’ll like these games!
The D was bottom quarter in 2020 with Bates and Bell and same LB core.
Good argument against drafting downs. Mike Brown will NOT give a safety a big 2nd contract, earned or not. He just doesn’t value the position

Thats cool. How many playoff games has Jessie won since leaving? He took the bag over potentially playing for a Super Bowl contending team. His agent is the same one Tee got rid of because all that agent cares about(which i understand is his whole job purpose) is money. Tee wanted to stay here and HE helped make that get done. Jessie walked. There’s a difference.
So were the Bengals going to do without Chase or Higgins? Inquiring minds want to know…
This might not be a popular opinion but acting like Bates walking is what broke the defense is shortsighted. Jessie Bates wasn’t going to save Wilson and Pratt from getting washed, he wasn’t going to develop Murphy or Ossai into good edge rushers, he wasn’t going to prevent Chido getting hurt or CTB regressing to a practice squad player. I loved Bates as much as the next person and I too yearn for the days of our 21/22 defenses, but sticking Bates onto this defense is a bandaid on a severed leg.
These falcons must have a great defense then right?? Right…..
