Giants INTERESTED In Jon Gruden? New York Giants Rumors

A lot of people have been asking me, Marsh, do you want John Gruden as the next head coach for the New York Giants? Well, on today’s show, I’m going to bring on my guy Mitchell Ren, the host of the Raiders Report here at Chat Sports. He covered every single game of part two of John Gruden with the Raiders. And we got some rumors from ESPN and Jordan Renan on Big Blue and Gruden. Before we dive into that, I want to hear from you in the comments section. I am your host Marshall Green and we finally have some smoke around Gruden and the New York Giants. quote, “John Grooted has been mentioned in conversations with people around the NFL for the Giants head coaching job per Jordan Renan of ESPN. I have been looking and waiting for an opportunity to dissect this conversation. So, we’re going to do that on today’s show. Some background information on Gruden, 15 years as an NFL head coach, two stances with the Oakland Raiders and the Las Vegas Raiders, as well as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he actually won the Super Bowl in 2002. Some questions on if that was his roster, his football team taking over for Tony Dunie and his career record 117 and 112. currently working for Bar Stool Sports as an entertainer in the sports media world. In his second stint with Las Vegas, this is what the record looked like every single year. 4 and 12 his first year there, 7-9 in 2019, 8-8 in 2020 and then 3-2 before he resigned or was forced to resign. We’ll dive into that coming up in a little bit. A lot of people know John Gruden to be an offensive head coach, but it didn’t really quick uh click, excuse me, with the Raiders instant number two points per game rank. In 2018, they were 28th and then 24th. And it was actually pretty good. In 2020, they were 10th and then in 2021, they were 18th. So, kind of want to just set the groundwork before we dive into this. And I bring my guy on, Mitchell Ren. Shout out to Mitch giving us some time to stop by and talk some Gruden and some Raiders. We talked about it. Mitch, you covered every single game here at Chat Sports and the John Gruden era. And I am just going to toss this to you. I’ve shared my thoughts about Gruden to the New York Giants, but I always want the experts to share theirs. So Mitch, take it away. Appreciate all of y’all. Appreciate Marshall Green. Again, if you don’t know who I am, I’m host of the Raiders Report here, Mitchell Rens. And I get it. John Gruden is fun and entertaining to listen to just like my guy Marshall Green. But here’s the thing though, when it comes to Gruden, don’t fall in love with the right now everything going on with Bartol. Because from somebody that covered him, if you’re a New York Giants fan out there, would you want a head coach that was bad in the draft, bad in free agency, bad in trades, bad in everything that he’s done? The answer to that is probably no. But first, what I want to talk about here is the NFL draft. Because if you’re a Giants team, you got to be able to figure it out and you got to be able to build through the draft. That’s what good organizations do. And John Gruden was not good at being able to build in the draft. You want to talk about bust. Cleveland Furl bust. Damon Arnett bust. Henry Rugs bust. Alex Leatherwood bust. Jonathan Abram bust. I mean, you’re talking about all of those first round picks. Not too many years ago, none of those guys are even in the NFL anymore. And I get it. He found a few diamonds in the rough and a Hunter Renfro and a Max Crosby in a you know Travon Mullen was a bust. But my point is this Mike Mayok found those late rounders. John Gruden’s responsibility with the Raiders was drafting in the first round. And when you see what he did in the first round, it was a complete disaster. Then let’s talk about free agency. The thing that John Gruden always did with the Raiders, he overspent for bigname guys. Trent Brown made him the highest paid offensive tackle in the NFL. Trent Brown made on average $76,000 per snap because he got too fat. He got too lazy and he couldn’t get out there on the football field. You overpaid for Cory Littleton. You overpaid for LaMarcus Joiner. You overpaid for Nick Wakowski. You overpaid for Carl Nass. So if you’re a New York Giants team and you want to fail in the draft and you want to overspend on bigname guys, John Gruden should be your dude. But here’s the other thing though. He was also really bad when it came to trades. Trade away Khalil Mack. If you’re going to trade away Khalil Mack and you’re going to do a full-on reset, that reset needs to work. I think the Giants right now are kind of thinking about doing a full-on reset, you’ve already saw one guy do a full-on reset and it was a complete disaster. So, you trade away Khalil Mack. That was pretty bad, right? You traded away Amari Cooper, which kind of doesn’t really get brought up nearly as much, but you traded away a number one receiver. Then you traded for Antonio Brown. He didn’t even freaking play for you. You go out, you trade for a player like Martavis Bryant. What John Gruden did is exactly what y’all are doing. You’re only interested in John Gruden because that’s his name. And all John did was he looked at names and he went out and he tried to find those guys. Also, one of the things that he really did that doesn’t get a lot of attention, he ruined the Raiders offensive line. I don’t know how y’all like followed the Raiders as close, but there used to be an old saying when Derek Carr was the quarterback that that offensive line was car insurance. It was one of the best offensive lines in the NFL built by Reggie McKenzie and then Gruden started to bring in the big names started to spend elsewhere and you lost the ability to be able to win in the trenches. So another thing that I I kind of didn’t like one of the things that Gruden did is when the Raiders went out and they hired him, they hired him for 10 years, 100 million fully guaranteed. If you’re going to work in the New York media, the media is going to say a lot of stuff to you. You got to know what you’re saying. John Gruden did not back his words up. I would want a head coach that backs up what he says. And John Gruden said that if I fail as a head coach, I’m not going to take the money. I’m going to give it back. Obviously, that did not happen. And I know that that’s a minor thing. And I know why he got moved on from maybe that’s not looked at him as failing. But you know what? When you sign somebody, when you hire somebody 10 years, 100 million fully guaranteed and they don’t finish out that contract and they win zero playoff games, I’m sorry, that is a failure. But my final reason, and this is where I really want people to pay attention from what I’m saying, raise your hand if you’re watching the show right now and you think that succeeding in December and January, succeeding at the end of the season is more important than succeeding in the beginning of the season. Cuz I personally think that. And when you look at the numbers from John Gruden, he started in 2019 3-2, they finished seven- nine. In 2020, started 6 and three, finished 8-8. In 2021, they started 3-0. Then they lose two straight games, and then John Gruden ends up leaving. Here’s a fun stat. 55 coaches since the merger, have had 35 plus regular season games in December and January. John Gruden’s 388 win percentage ranks 54th, only behind Herm Edwards. So, all I’m saying to you is this. If you want to win in September and October, you go hire John Gruden. If you don’t want to win in November, December, and January, you go hire John Gruden. I went through the Gruden experience. He’s fun and entertaining to listen to. But I promise you this right now, you’re going to be whining. You’re going to be crying. You’re going to be saying, “Fire John Gruden very, very quickly.” Yeah. And I think a lot of people, Mitch, will bring up, “Well, Marshall, he wasn’t the GM.” But he kind of was actually the GM. I thought you made a great point. He got to control the first round picks. He got to have a major says so in free agency. And look, I love John Gruden. I love how much how much football he loves. He’s awesome to listen to. I would love to watch a press conference every single week on Gruden. But Mitch, I side with you. I was here for some of those years. I just don’t think it’s in the best interest of the Giants. You want a young, innovative guy that can do his magic with Jackson Dart. And when looking at Derek Carr, they figured out Derek at the back half of the season. He got it rolling a little bit, but I promise you this. Don’t fall in love with John Gruden, the entertainer, cuz you’re hiring John Gruden, the head coach. 100% agree. And I know people I can already hear him in the comments saying, “But Marshall, John Gruden loves Jackson Dart.” And people were saying the same thing, Marshall, we can’t go out and fire Brian Dable because he was the one who picked Jackson Dart. Look, I’ll just say this to all the people who are saying, “Marshall, we love John Gruden because he loves Jackson Dark.” Again, I love John Gruden. That’s why I wanted to bring on my guy Mitchell Ren. I thought he laid it out perfectly. He hit all the highs, he hit all the lows, and there were a lot more lows. But I’ll say this, there are a lot of coaches out there that are one going to want to work for the Giants because it is an attractive job right now, but two that want to work with Jackson Dart. You know why? Because Dart is a good quarterback and that is all head coaches want. They want an opportunity to compete and have a guy at a quarterback spot that can get them there. And Jackson Dart, he can do that. We saw him make the Giants competitive against the Chargers in his first start. We saw him go and beat the Philadelphia Eagles. We saw him with no Malik neighbors walk into Denver against the best defense in the NFL, put up 33 points and essentially write a win in the column. But then it was an ultimate collapse by the defense. The Giants have already been competitive this year in losses with Dart. They’re going to be able to compete next year. I believe in any coach that is looking for a job to be successful, he will do that. I mean, if you just take the stats that you see on screen right now and stretch them out over a 17game season, like he would have thrown for 30,441 yards in his first 17 games accorded it out and projected it. 24 passing touchdowns, 17 rushing touchdowns, and only seven interceptions. Would he keep up the rushing touchdown pace? I don’t know. But I’d say for a rookie over his projected first 17 games putting up almost 45 touchdowns and just seven interceptions, like selling Jackson Dart to the next head coach is not going to be hard for the front office of the New York Giants. That’ll actually probably be the easiest thing that they have to do when they try to figure out who they want at their head coach spot. And it if and if it is a head coach who has multiple other options out there like Dart is going to be a guy that is a swing player and a swing argument to say, “Oh, maybe I do want to work with the Giants because they do have Jackson Dart.” And I saw Jackson Dart put up what would be a projected 40 touchdowns in his rookie season with only playing one half of football with Malik Neighbors. Um, so yeah, I don’t want to hire Gruden just because he loves Jackson Dart. I love Jackson Dart. Andrew Connell loves Jackson Dart. I think that we could win as many football games as the Giants have won this year. But also, my little sister loves Jackson Dart. I don’t think she should be the head coach of the Giants just because of that. So, I’ll ask this question before we bounce on out of here. Who do you want the Giants to hire?
