🚨ESPN Drops BOMBSHELL REPORT On Mike McDaniel & Dolphins Head Coaching Search
[Music] We have a bombshell report coming in from ESPN on the Dolphins head coach conundrum. Whether it is what they’re going to do with Mike McDaniel and potential replacements that will be in the sight line of Steven Ross and the Miami Dolphins. I’m Nick Rolloff. This is Dolphins Today by Chad Sports. I want to make sure you’re subscribed before we get into the report because you wouldn’t be able to see the report from ESPN unless you paid for ESPN Plus, which is $120 a year in climbing here at Dolphins Today. Well, it’s completely free. So, just hit that sub button and join us for daily content and we won’t put anything behind a payw wall. All right, before we get into the actual report, I want to set the stage here because ESPN did this buzz article with what they’re hearing around the league. And ESPN’s Dan Graciano in the article essentially asked Jeremy Fowler, ESPN, if Mike McDaniel can ultimately salvage his job with the remainder of the season. And this is how Fowler responded. He said, “I do. I wouldn’t call it likely, but in my mind, there is a plausible scenario where he sticks in Miami. The team is coming off back-to-back wins, and the vibe seems to be good. The Dolphins are responding to McDaniel more than they are tuning him out, which players will do when the message grows stale. And I did find this interesting, specifically that one line about he doesn’t seem to be likely. So Jeremy Fowler, despite Miami playing a little bit better over the last month, still thinks it’s more likely than not Stephen Ross and whoever the new GM is in January ultimately fires Mike McDaniel and moves on. That’s really interesting. But Dan Graciano responded saying, “One more point on McDaniel. He did something like this last season when the team started two and six and then won six of its next eight to claw back onto the edges of the playoff race. He might still end up gone, but he has made the case that he can hold on to the locker room even when things are going badly. And that says something about him that ownership will surely consider when making its decision. And I do have to say this, the new GM, whoever it may be, will have a very tough decision with Mike McDaniel. he’ll have a tough decision when it comes to what to do with some of these veterans that have big calf pits next season. But definitely with McDaniel because I don’t think it’s a secret at this point if Steven Ross had his way, he would likely keep Mike McDaniel for next season. But the truth of the matter is you have to let the people you hire in important football decision roles make those decisions. And if he hires a GM who wants to fire Mike McDaniel and bringing in another head coach who is on the same exact timeline and have the same aligned views on how to build a roster and how to win in the National Football League, well, you have to let that GM do that. So, yes, I agree with ESPN. I still believe it’s more likely than not McDaniels ultimately fired. But there is still a chance Mike can save his job by rattling off more wins and coming out of the by-week they have the Jets and the Saints to potentially get back to six and seven and really be in that playoff hunt. Before we continue on here, pin comment. Should Miami fire Mike McDaniel after this season? Type Y for yes or type N for no. It’s obvious it is not going to happen in season. I will not ask for it to happen in season anymore, but I will ask you if they should fire him when the season concludes in mid January. I, and I said this earlier this week, still think the Dolphins should fire Mike McDaniel. I understand why they might want to keep him for another year because Tua will be here in 2026, no matter who is head coach or GM. And if you want to have the most potential success next season, the person that can coach the most out of Tua is obviously Mike McDaniel. And if the season goes downhill again next year, well then you could absolutely just move on from Tua in 2027, fire Mike McDaniel and hire a new head coach and go clean slate bridge or rookie quarterback with a new head coach and it works out relatively fine. But I think Miami should just rip the band-aid off and move on from Mike McDaniel because we know what Mike is. He can beat the bad teams and he struggles against the winning teams. Through his third, this is his fourth year in Miami. So through three and a half years, Mike McDaniel is 4 and5 against teams when he played them had a winning record. And against teams that were either 500 or worse, he’s 28 and 15. Mike has still not been able to get the big win. And I know a couple weeks ago he beat a Buffalo Bills team who you haven’t beat since September of 2022 and it’s a team with a winning record and one of the top teams in the AFC. But I think that might have just been an anomaly almost even though Miami is playing better. The Bills bounced back and beat the Buccaneers pretty handily. So, it’s like the Bills might have just had a little off game and it was more to do with Buffalo struggles than Miami’s good game because then Miami the week after struggled with a Commander team that has been playing absolutely horrible football as of late. Like, I don’t want Dolphins fans to quote unquote jump the shark here. Yes, the Dolphins roster is still playing very hard for Mike McDaniel. Yes, they’ve won three of four, including back-to-back games heading into the bye-week, but Mike McDaniel still can’t consistently beat the good opponents. He still has those procedural issues. Think about the first drive of the game against the Commanders. Had to call a timeout on a third and short, then had a delay a game on fourth and inches. Like, these things just consistently pop up, which always happen under Mike McDaniel as head coach. And then obviously you had the decision to go pistol on third and goal from the one against the Commanders, the going for it on fourth and goal, which I don’t have an issue with, but a lot of people did. And then you called timeouts to almost help the Commanders with that potential game-winning drive in regulation in Madrid. You’re just lucky Matt Gay missed the 56-y field goal. Like, yeah, Miami is playing decent over the last month and the players are still playing hard, but I will not be fooled. I still know that Mike McDaniel is not a head coach that will ultimately lead you to a Super Bowl or winning in the playoffs. And I don’t know how any of you guys watching at home can have faith in him long term because we’ve seen him coach a Dolphins team that collapsed in 2022, collapsed in 2023, struggled out of the gate in 2024, albeit injuries to Tua and some others, and then has been one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2025. The evidence is just so large against Mike McDaniel to where I will not be fooled and think that he should keep his job long term because he’s won three out of four games in the last month, especially when two of those games were against bad teams in the Commanders and the Atlanta Falcons. And coming up in just one second, ESPN in that same article labeled a couple potential replacements for Mike McDaniel and around the NFL. But before we get into that, we are sponsored today by Ethos. ESPN listed a lot of different head coach candidates in that article, but the first four they mentioned, which aka in my opinion are the top head coach candidates in their mind, are all current defensive coordinators. We talked about Vance Joseph earlier in the week, and we’ll talk about him again here in just a second, but he’s been named. Robert Salah has been named. Brian Flores, the ex-dolphins head coach, has been named and the one that seems to be rising the most over the past couple of weeks because we’ve known about Flores, we’ve known about Salah, we’ve known about Joseph, but Jeff Hafley, the Green Bay defensive coordinator, is rising up ranks and it’s even making some Packers fans question if they should fire Matt Laflur this off season to promote Jeff Halfley to that new head coach position. Yeah, that’s a real thing happening right now over in Green Bay. So, those are four interesting names to keep your eye on. Some other names that were mentioned, so they went like with defense, they went with like offense. The five offensive names they mentioned were Matt Naggie. Oh boy, if the Dolphins hired Matt Naggie to replace Mike McDaniel, that would be my 13th reason. I’d be done. Mike McCarthy would be an intriguing option. Cliff Kingsbury, Arthur Smith, former head coaches that are current offensive coordinators. intrigued by Cliff. Probably not in on it. Arthur Smith, absolutely not. And then Joe Brady is another option, but I’m also saying no to him because I don’t even think he’s that good of an offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. But I want to circle back to Vance Joseph because he’s been linked to Miami now multiple times in this article from ESPN, but he also was briefly mentioned by NFL Network and Ian Rapaort last weekend. And in this article, Jeremy Fowler said, “Vance Joseph’s defense in Denver might break the NFL record for sacks in a single season, and he has ties to the Miami and Cincinnati jobs if those come open.” And you might be wondering, well, why would Vance Joseph have some ties to the Dolphins job? Well, it’s because he was on the Dolphins coaching staff in 2016 as the defensive coordinator for Miami. And obviously Steven Ross has some sort of relationship with him and may look to target him to be the replacement for Mike McDaniel if they ultimately move on. But since he was the defensive coordinator for Miami, he went from defensive coordinator in Miami to head coach with the Denver Broncos for two years. Ultimately was fired. They bring in Shawn Payeyton. Joseph goes to Arizona to be their defensive coordinator and then rejoins Shawn Payeyton. And I want to make a quick adjustment. They didn’t go away from him for Shawn Payeyton. They went away from him for Nathaniel Hackett. Even dumber. But with Shawn Payeyton back at head coach, he convinced Vance Joseph to return to Denver. And you just simply don’t see someone get fired as head coach from an organization and then go back to that organization not even five years later to become a defensive coordinator. It shows you the type of man Vance Joseph is to put his pride aside and just go where he is needed and where he fits the best. And I got to be honest, I don’t even think he deserved to be fired in Denver. He, yes, was last in the AFC West and third in his two years, but it’s not like they were like the worst team in the NFL. They won five and six games, respectively. I thought it was a premature hook for Vance Joseph. Broncos reporters have consistently came to the defense of Vance Joseph saying that he got the raw end of the stick in that. He wasn’t allowed to pick his own coaching staff. He wasn’t allowed to have a major input in player personnel. And that is what he thrives at. And we’ve seen him take over this Denver Broncos defense and really take it from bottom 10 in the NFL to a top three, top five defense in the entire National Football League. like his first year in Denver as DC in 2023, it wasn’t good. There’s top bottom 10 the NFL. But then he was able to really get his hands on it, sink in his schemes, his principles, bring in players that he thought fit his scheme, fit his system, and it’s just taken off since then. They have been a consensus top five defense in the NFL over the past two seasons. You heard it in that article from ESPN. they might set the record for sacks in a single season. Like he is an elite defensive coordinator and he has a great eye for defensive talent. If he is allowed to come in as head coach and work handinand with the new general manager to make some changes to this Dolphins defense, I have absolutely zero doubt in my mind that Miami will have a consistent top 10 defense in the NFL under Vance Joseph. You could have major questions about how the offense would be and you just have to really nail that offensive coordinator higher, which Vance Joseph hopefully could do. Has a lot of strong connections around the NFL. But his ability to draft defense, Patrick Certan, you have uh Nick Bonito dominating over there. You have Singleton, the linebacker. You have some of these safeties, Riley Moss. Like, he has a great eye for defensive talent. So Miami would have a terrific defense under Vance Joseph and I just think you would need to have your offensive coordinator really take control of that offense. So you would need someone experienced which I think he has a lot of good connections around the league and then also um have to work handin-hand with the GM to figure out the offense. But the defense would be elite in Miami and I think Joseph learning from his first two years as head coach with Denver in 171 18 would be able to really benefit from that and put his best foot forward for a second goound. Sometimes you need that second goaround to really make things happen as a head coach. Sometimes it doesn’t click that first time around. I mean, I’m going to use Andy Reid as an example. Although he had a ton of success with the Philadelphia Eagles, they never got it done. They never won. Yeah, it was good success for a while, but they never won the Super Bowl. Then he comes in Kansas City. Yes, he was blessed with Patrick Mahomes and they drafted him, but listen, he still made that pick. he still coached him up and now he’s a three-time Super Bowl champ. So, yeah, I think a second goaround for Vance Joseph could ultimately work out. Not comparing Joseph to Andy Reid, but just you see those stories happen around the league quite a bit. Bill Bichc, second chances head coach in New England. Saying, would you hire Vance Joseph? Type H for hire, type P for pass. You make the call. If Miami fires Mike McDaniel, would you hire Vance Joseph? He’s certainly on my list. And just past weekend, I made a video about potential head coach targets. These are my five right now. And I don’t think it’s necessarily like I’m pounding the fist. I need to go defense, defense, defense. But I will say if you fire Mike McDaniel, you’re probably not going to find a head coach that is a better offensive mind than Mike McDaniel, right? Like Mike McDaniel’s really good offensive mind. The way he can scheme up um runs as well as some pass plays. I think he just sometimes doesn’t make the right calls and play calling and sometimes gets away from what is working. But he is an unbelievable good offensive mind. So I doubt you’re going to find a better one, which is why if you’re moving on from Mike McDaniel, the head coach is naturally probably going to be defensively like orientated, right? And I think Salah is a really good option. I think he got their own stick in New York. Same thing with Joseph in Denver. If you want to go with a first-time head coach, Jesse Menter and Chris Schuler a good option. Shula really rising the ranks for me. If I had to rank my head coach targets, I think it would go Robert Salah one. Vance Joseph 2. I really think I’m growing on Joseph and moving him above McCarthy. Schula four, Jessa five. That’ll do it for today’s show. We’ll have a video out later today. Actually bringing a mock draft to the channel since we’re on by week. We’ll have a couple videos on Friday. P= PASS. Was Vance Joseph responsible for losing against Miami 20 to 70 in 2023? So the Miami Dolphins able to beat easy low IQ defense and team so why are we going to consider him in the first place? Geez.
Yes please 🙏🙏🙏
Dear Lord, not Vance Joseph, Flores, or Salah.
N =no. Mike should stay. How can you fix decade of problems within a couple of years. We need a competent GM and front office to pick and draft great players. That's the biggest problem this team had for many years. For many years dolphins drafted many bust and poop players. Now Mike has to polish the poop and make it smell good too. Come on. Mike should stay.
If you like Vance Joseph, why not go in house and hire Anthony Weaver?? Why let weaver go head coach somewhere else.
Blah blah blahhh
He is good on offense and is getting better as a coach Keep him.
Bring in Shula. The glory days under his grandfather were the last time we were a winning franchise. We need a reincarnation .
Vance Joseph trash

Chris Shula. Head Coach and let him pick GM.
