[670 the score] According, to 670, the Cubs were stunned Imanaga accepted the qualifying offer and now might have a tough time signing a big free agent.

Color me NOT stunned.

I hate Tom Ricketts
If this is seriously their mindset we are in deep trouble. That was a extremely fair offer for Shota. I suspect they are gonna punt on any more free agents now pending the labor dispute next year.
No shot Cubs are gonna be hampered by a 22mil one year. If they were they wouldn’t have offered it
I hate Tom Ricketts.
In the words of Ryan Dempster: BLINDSIDED!!!
Humiliating that a market rate SP hamstrings penny pincher Ricketts. It’s disgusting to hear them complain about spending when they have one of the lowest spending/revenue %
This doesn’t pass the sniff test what so ever.
Hoyer has faults but they tend to center around being risk averse or being incredibly value focused, refusing to get irrational over a player to make it happen.
Everyone and their mother thought there was a decent chance he would take it. Hoyer living in a fantasy land where he’s shocked at this flies in the face of being risk averse and value focused.
Almost buying it. Almost.
I’d like to point out that the qualifying offer was 22 mil. Grow up Tom. Tucker was worth 6 mil less
I was there. They weren’t stunned at all. They were happy they got Shota for what they offered. Have me on anytime, 670.
Great. Now the Cubs will have to sign a 40 year old bench bat instead of a 37 year old one.
Mike likes it here. Who can blame him?
This doesn’t make sense. They wouldn’t have even offered it otherwise. Not buying that this is credible. The qualifying offer saved them a lot of cash.
This implies we were spending in free agency anyhow
Is this talking heads rage baiting on what they think the cubs are thinking or do they have sources?
To whoever is reading, sorry about the extra apostrophe lol
Yeah I’m gonna just choose to not believe that. If they were going to think that then they wouldn’t have offered the QO.
And when every report coming out is suggesting the Cubs are looking to spend at the top of the pitching market, there’s no way they were “stunned”.
Getting Imanaga at 22 million for one year isn’t even that bad. I think we are far more likely to have him bounce back than be the second half player he was.
People still listen to The Score?
I listened to the segment, and the post title is very misleading. It’s just two guys filling the air by talking about hypotheticals. There’s no reporting saying someone in the Cubs front office said they were surprised or didn’t plan for him to accept.
They will only have a hard time signing a free agent if they let it. Nothing stopping them (them being the Ricketts family)
Stunned feels like hyperbole and if this really holds up a big free agent signing that’s ridiculous.
I hate the Ricketts Family. Every budget decision comes from Joe, who will spend millions to get elected someone who will cut his taxes but cheaps out on the Cubs.
I’m not buying this at all. I think they knew there was a damn good chance he’d re-sign.
TR is a domestic terrorist
I’m not giving 670 any clicks, is this based of an actual source or the George Ofman tweet?
I don’t believe it. I also don’t believe they should have offered him the QO. He was a 1 war pitcher who couldn’t be trusted to pitch in an all hands on deck game 5.
They already have an overpaid, mediocre 1 war starter in taillon.
Steele really needs to be good again.
And yes, tom Ricketts is a cheapass.
This is so stupid and clickbait. Why wouldn’t anyone in the right mind take $22 million
Fuck off there’s no way
Broke ass behavior bro
honestly shocked that anyone takes George Ofman seriously. He hasn’t been a relevant reporter in like 20 years.
Misread the market on a 1 year deal? It’s just cash and it clears the books next November. Moreover why on earth would the Cubs not expect Shota to take that 1 yr deal? MLB wants to go on work stoppage after 2026? Cool. Shota can go finish his career in Japan if needed. At his age any kind of work stoppage just hurts his career earnings. Go get your stack Shota!
These cheap motherfuckers leaking stories that Imanaga accepted the qualifying offer and *now* they’ll have a hard time signing free agents.
I have a radical idea: Spend more
Notice the headline doesn’t say that’s what happened. It just says that’s some people discussed it.
They have to expect this if they’re going to offer a QO. If they won’t want to absorb the money, THEN DON’T FUCKING OFFER IT!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is not a surprise. It’s just a convenient excuse for them to use.
They were going to peddle this bullcrap about not being able to afford free agents no matter which way it went with QOs
Lmao. Dodgers sign Ohtani and Yamamoto and others in same FA class and one qualifying offer takes us out of the market. Ricketts are evil
