Who’s the next breakout player for the Carolina Panthers?
In interest of keeping with our theme of next, there’s some next breakouts, right? By by about week 11, you know if a breakout is real or not, right? Uh Drake May, former NC or UNCC quarterback. Um he’s the betting favorite to win the MVP in the NFL at certain sports books, second to Matt Stafford in other sports books. But either way, second year in the league, team drafted what, fourth overall last year to be the MVP or one of the MVPs through this part. I’d say he’s gotten next. He might got now. The Panthers, here’s how I’m going to phrase this question. Uh Bryce Young probably a little too old. So 448 yard performance this past week. It’s not like a breakout he’s got next. It’s like a well we pretty soon they have to decide whether to give you an extension. I don’t know if you can have next and we saw the five touchdown game at the end of last year against Atlanta. Tedo, that’s a there were too many ro uh ba na na taroa ro Toroa McMillan broken out, right? Like I think I think he’s proven it at this point. It’s in the kind of the a little bit of the Drake May category where it’s like no it’s established now, right? You you’re not next. You’re number one wide receiver in the NFL. Uh what is he? Sixth in the NFL in receiving yards. Uh like you’re there. So, the question for the Carolina Panthers, and this is a question that should be asked of every team as often as possible, is where’s the next breakout coming from, right? You never you never go, “All right, we have our stars. We’re good.” You go, “We have our stars. Who’s the next diamond in the rough that might emerge? Who’s the next guy that might be a Pro Bowler, an allp pro? Who’s the next guy that might uh require a gigantic contract?” Especially if you’re a GM, you need to be preparing for those things moving forward. So, is there another breakout out there? I am taking Tedro McMillan off the table because if I asked everybody like who’s got next is the face of the Panthers, I think a lot of people would just throw out Tedo McMillan and I don’t like making it easy for you all. I have some names written in front of me and I want to talk them out. Nick Scorton, is he due for a breakout or by the way Nick Scorin, second round pick, edge rusher for the Panthers. uh playing more and more, playing well. At times he’s been really gosh darn good. Uh he also is the player for those of you that have forgotten uh after the Saints game called out he and his teammates for not having a good practice week. Called it lackadasical. Um so so you know you you might recognize him a little bit. Is he next for the Carolina Panthers? I know my answer. Dennis, do you have an answer for Nick Scorton? I say yeah. Okay, explain why. I think it’s because we have seen him continue to progress as the season has gone along. Early in the season, limited number of snaps, but he’s gotten more repetitions, especially now with DJ Johnson got released, Pat Jones being injured. So, the opportunities have just been there. I actually thought the Saints game was his best game that he has played. And again, you’re just seeing him getting in the backfield more and more. I think we are going to see the hey a sack and a half, two sack forced fumble type of game from Nick Scorton here possibly real soon. I hope I’m wrong with this and he is an exceptionally young player as far as like age. So there’s definitely room for him to prove me wrong. He’s literally just turned 21. I think he might be a player who is extremely high floor but never gets the flashy uh like he’s never a 12 sack guy but he might be a seven sack guy for 10 years. Yeah. Uh and and the advanced analytics like him a little bit more than the the flashy stats like I’m I’m I’m holding him back. I hope I’m wrong. I hope heck I hope he has 14 sacks next year and you play this back and go haha and I’ll go yeah let’s laugh at me. That’s awesome. Um, but I’m I’m I’m just not sure he has that that it factor or whatever you want to call it to go above and beyond. What about Jaylen Coker? I’m flowing him out there as a um could he be a a like super legit out of nowhere number two kind of in the and I know people will get mad because it’s like a direct comparison to a guy who he might be replacing but do you remember when Adam Thalen popped out of nowhere and then and then Stefon Diggs showed up and it was kind of like you had this this former five-star recruit Stefon Diggs granted he was like a fifth round pick but he was He was one of those uh you know like everybody knew the talent very early on went to Maryland and then you had Minnesota State Mano uh Adam Thielen and it was like they do it so differently. One appears to be so much more kind of logical in their production but they’re both putting up 1100 yards plus and it’s like a one and two. Could you see Jaylen Coker sliding up into that? Well, we saw Tero McMillan coming from a mile away. We didn’t see Jaylen Coker coming from 10 steps in front of us, but yet they are like an obvious number one, number two in a good passing game. Could you see it? I could see it. Okay. All right. Good. We’re there. I’m not ruling him the answer, but he’s definitely in the running. I’m also putting this one out there. Uh Jimmy Horn Jr. Not because I think he’s like the best player in the world, but I think his plays, if they were to work, are very highlight worthy, right? they that like he’s not going to score, you know, 15 touchdowns receiving, but he might have five and all of them are memorable, right? It might be a punt return, uh, uh, deep ball, like just straight flames out of his cleats. Like, he’s just built for highlights. And in a highlight culture where, you know, a lot of people watch the games and a lot of people wake up and just search the name of the player on Twitter and watch the 30 secondond clip. Uh, I I think Jimmy Horn Jr. has some of that. Could it be someone in the secondary? Shaw Smith, Wade, Cory Thornton, if he played well this past week, kind of real first opportunity this year. Lean Ransom. Do any of those? I’m like, uh, who’s the uh the Oh, is the mentalist, you know, the guy that that does all the prediction. I’m And he goes like, uh, think of the person. One, two, three, four, five, five. Okay, it’s five, right? You’re trying to like I’m just saying names and I’m watching Dennis trying to see which ones make like his eyebrows twitch and then go oh he’s interested in Lean Ransom. Uh did any of those names that I just mentioned do anything for you as far as potential future breakouts? Who’s gone next? None that really stick out. The only one I could potentially see maybe not this year but next if they decide to make a change at corner is Cory Thornton. If they decide to move on from Mike Jackson, maybe they we can get a little bit less expensive at corner and put Corey Thornton there. Maybe I could see that. I mean, that or there’s an injury that happens this season. That’s the one I could potentially see. I know Shaw Smith Wade had that pick six against the the Falcons early on in the season at Bank of America, but I don’t I don’t know. I don’t know. We felt like Trayvon Merrick had his big game already, but he’s five years into the NFL. I don’t know if he’s out. He’s He’s good. Um, I feel like if there’s one, it potentially is Cory Thornton. Yep. I I agree with that. I do think you’re right as far as they It almost is like they’d have to move on from Mike Jackson and bring in somebody to start who doesn’t work and then they’re like, “Well, let’s give Cory Thorn like he needs some help to get the opportunity, but he’s been good in the opportunities he’s been given this past week amongst them, right? He pops up on a lot of lists, but I’m g I’m gonna Jaylen Coker’s still in the running. Jimmy Horn in a different way, but I think I know where I’m going. Okay. And I’m going to cheat. All right. I think it comes out of the tight end room. H And I’m intentionally not saying a name because I have no clue which one it’s going to be. Uh like the the 54 yard catch by Tommy Trimble felt like whoa. Didn’t know he had that in his bag of tricks. Uh Mitchell Evans is somebody who I think if he becomes a 30% better pass catcher, he becomes like the cult figure. He has like some, you know, Paul Bunanesque tendencies, uh where just because he’s of his size and blocking ability, people will start throwing Gronk’s name out even though it doesn’t make any sense to compare him to Gronk. Um, but I think he could be a guy just because he he again he blocks well and I could see him catching a lot of touchdowns just because, you know, you put your heavy lineup, your jumbo lineup in down there on the goal line, play action, he’s he’s running. Uh, I could see him being like a nine touchdown guy down the way if things go well. Um, and then I’m still high on Javon Sanders. I’m not giving up. I think he’s he’s he’s he runs wide receiver routes and he’s a tight end. That’s got to be you got to be able to play call that open. He’s one of my guys before the draft and I’m not giving up. There’s potential there. If it comes out of one the tight end room I think has breakout potential is what I’m getting at. I don’t know if we can count Tommy Trimble for the simple fact that he’s in year five if we’re going to you know if we’re going to discount like you know like a Trayvon Mer or something along those lines. But except he like his role has been so like you can break out from being like a third stringer to I guess. Uh Trayvon Merrick is like he makes $17 million a year on a free agency deal. Like like he’s established. Bryce Young was the number one overall pick. Uh like if you you can’t slow roll it as the highest paid player in the second highest paid player in your secondary or the number one overall pick. Meanwhile, if you’re if you’re Tommy Treble, like you know, you weren’t I don’t think he was ever in the plans to be like a star, you know what I mean? Um, so, so I’m putting him in there. Mitch Eleven, Datavian Sanders, or Tommy Trumbull is my official answer. And yes, I admit I cheated. We did see some of those flash games, those flash moments from Datavian Sanders last year, but I remember he had that neck injury against the Kansas City Chiefs and stuff that kind of slowed him down a little bit. But remember the game against the the New Orleans Saints where he had was it um, let me pull it up here. Four catches for 87 yards in that game against the Saints, which was the second one of the year. I’m gonna com I’m going to combine two conversations we’ve had today about Javon Sanders. Okay. Um the Carolina Hurricanes, right, did so much good last night, but hockey the way it goes, right? You you you don’t always convert the chances that you create. So, they end up losing in a shootout despite the fact that I think for a majority of the game they they did what they were supposed to do and outplayed and created chances and all that stuff. Uh Jetavian Sanders has some of that to me, which doesn’t happen in in football very often. Um, but he runs like a good route, makes an unbelievable body control move, jumps, twists, gets two hands on the ball, and just can’t bring the catch in. And it’s not really a drop, but it’s also like I really would have wished that he would have made that play. Um, and if he did, I think he gets more opportunities. And it’s like I you did a lot of good, right? I don’t think a lot of guys get their hands on that ball, but what’s the difference between you being athletic enough to get your hands there and somebody who’s not fast enough or can’t jump high enough or doesn’t have the body control to get there if you’re going to drop it, right? It’s just an incompletion regardless, right? It’s an incompletion to both. So, I do think there’s part of Deavian Sanders that’s like it’s there, right? It’s it’s it’s like you outshot the opponent by 30, but you’re tied. It’s like it’s there. I’ve seen it. You’ve done good things. I know you have the ability, but an incompletion is the an incompletion, right? And and that’s what he’s dealing with. So, that’s where I I talk about the uh the potential is still there for him. I’m clinging to it. Um, I will say my my real estate on on Sanders Island, it I I’ve I’ve lost some neighbors recently, like a lot of people moving out of the moving off the island, but I’m I’m building in something permanent. I’m not putting up a tent. The drive with Tim Donnelly 999 the fan. That is football at four. Uh, actually, who’s your official answer if you’re gonna get Nick Gorton? Scorton. Okay. Scorton.
Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox discuss which young player for the Carolina Panthers could be poised for the next breakout performance.

Nic Scorton is the only answer
Trevin Wallace
Mitchell Evan’s
If Scourton turns into our next Mike Rucker or Charles Johnson . . . I'm ok with that. I would love if he goes Julius Peppers, but just solid would be great.
I'm not sure Coker gets an opportunity to do it with Legette still on the roster. I think Coker might end up going elsewhere and THEN becoming that guy. Unfortunately.
I don't think so on Horn . . . we're in an offense that's screaming for a shifty, slot-type guy and he hasn't really done much to grab that role.
Mitchell Evans I think may surprise people. He's a better catcher that we gave him credit for coming out. I don't think JT Sanders will be the guy.
Trevin Wallace
Jonathan Taylor deserves the MVP
Not at all saying it will but I’d love for it to be Brooks.
Next?? TMAC again! The guy has the potential to be a superstar
I can’t see Coker. The offense doesn’t pass enough and canales doesn’t want them to. They would have to be down a lot of games and comeback in order for Coker to get those touches. That’s the only time that canales will turn away from the run game
Jonathon brooks
Trevin Wallace sure fits the eye test this year.
Scourton, Princley, Coker…Mitchell Evans
Offense, Jimmy Horn, Mitchell Evans
Defense: Thornton, Scourton, Martin Scott/Cherelus
👀 Ransom
I believe I can tackle JT Saunders. He goes straight down!
Mitchell Evans
Scourton next. Then Jonathon Brooks.
