It’s FINALLY Happening…Pelicans News
It’s finally happening. After another loss that puts the team at 2 and 10, the Pelicans have decided to finally make a change at head coach. We’re going to give you the breaking news details about it and take a look back at some of the talk that’s been going on all this week about Willie Green’s job future inside this edition of Pelicas Digest. What’s good with it y’all? It’s your people Mel on the mic. back once again inside Digest on this Saturday. Waking up to breaking news on this Saturday and something that we’ve been talking about for weeks and weeks. I’ll give you the details in a second, but right now, go ahead and hit that subscribe button, like the channel. This is where you get the best analysis about the New Orleans Pelicans, opinions, and more right here on Pelicans Digest. And the breaking news this morning, if you just now waking up or haven’t gotten your alerts yet, it’s a done deal. The Willie Green era is over in New Orleans. Especially after the last 24 hours, well, really the last 48 hours, the uh the calls for Willie Green has gotten louder and louder to the point where Gail Benson had to get out in public and and and do an interview and say that this decision was basically up to Joe Dumar. Uh and after much consideration, according to her and Joe Dumar, last night’s loss to the Lakers sealed Willie Green’s fate. And this was a game that I couldn’t even to be honest with you. I really didn’t blame Willie Green for this loss last night. I really didn’t. The referees were were atrocious last night to the point where Willie Green literally had to get on the floor and scream and yell and get a technical. That’s how bad it got last night. So, I couldn’t really put the the the loss last night on Willie Green. You could because of some of the lineup situations and matchups. Why are you still starting Kavon Looney with Derek Queen to show you that he’s great? Why you continue to roll out Kavon Looney in the starting lineup and give him just 10 minutes in the game? Why start him? Why is there something in this contract that says he’s got to start a certain amount of games in order for y’all to pay him? Is those kind of decisions and things over the last few years that have that in my opinion have doomed Willie Green. Okay. is those kind of decisions, those little micro things, not and which turn into bigger things have led to this this this point right here. So this morning at about 8:30, the Pelicans put out a press release and here’s what they had to say. At the cafe evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to make a change at head coach. And this is coming from Joe Dumars. I have the utmost respect for Willie Green and I am sincerely appreciative of his contributions to the Pelicans organization and the New Orleans community. We wish him and his family all the best in the future. Now, this is coming off a conversation. Now, if you recall the video yesterday, we talked about how Gail Benson had to do did an interview with Ron Walker of Nola.com and the Times Micky where she said when asked about Willie Green’s job future that the decision was strictly going to be Joe Dum Mars’s decision. But I think last night Gail got involved. I think Gail got involved. I really do think Gail got involved. Yeah, she said she may have said that Jo is in charge of the the operations, but I think last night Gail got involved and said, “I have seen enough.” Especially when you consider that most of that arena in the Smoothie King Center last night was Lakers fans, not Pelicans fans. They all still the money the same to Gail. But I think she was very unhappy seeing that last night that the Lakers were getting more fans and cheers than the Pelicans were because as part of the statement that Joe Dumar put out, she got involved too and said something. Gail Benson in the uh press release from the Bellicans says that as I stated, Joe Dumar is in charge of basketball operation decisions and as one of the best and as one of the best basketball minds in the business, I trust him to rate to make the right decisions for our franchise. Now, of course, G, this is repeating something that Gail said in her interview with Rod Walker a couple of days ago, okay? And she continues on in the same press release about Willie Green being let go, saying that, “I have tremendous admiration and respect for Willie Green, and I truly appreciate all he has done for our organization over the last few years. This is a tough business, and these are difficult decisions. My expectation is to be a winning team that competes for championships and I remain steadfast in our commitment to building a championship caliber organization for our players, partners, and above all our fans. Again, I think Gail had enough because the questions were starting to get to her. everything was starting to get to her, you know, and and that’s one thing I’ve learned in corporate working in corporate America and corporate media and corporate business is if the owner realize they got to get involved, heads going to roll. If people if that starts reaching the owner, which it has been in the last couple of days, heads are going to roll. And that’s what’s been going on. Joe has sort of insulated himself and taken a you know a shadowy you know his season’s on so I’mma go over here and do my job and I’m in the office but meanwhile Gail out in the street getting the questions about the Pelicans and seeing all this stuff online and all the reports and all the questions she’s getting about it and one thing you don’t want to do is embarrass the owner man you don’t want the owner to feel like she’s got to get involved or they got to get involved I think you had felt like she had to get involved this time because it was just because it’s starting to reach her now. The finger was skipping past Joe and going to her. So, you know, I I really do think Gail got involved last night and told Joe pull the trigger despite what she may have said the day before about, oh, I’m going to let Joe Dumar, you know, make the decision. I think last night after that Lakers lost, Gail got involved. Gale say, “Hey, hey, hey, hey, I’m st Hey, you go you go handle this now because I’m tired of getting asked about this and it’s only getting worse, especially as you go into these games tomorrow night and Monday night against the Warriors and the Thunder.” So, the Jay Morago era for now has begun in New Orleans. Jay Moro, of course, was the former head coach of Charlotte, was a highly soughtafter assistant coach and head coach uh in the past offseason. As of right now, he hasn’t been given the job. He has been given the title of interim head coach. So, that possibly means that if Morgo can’t turn this thing around, you’re more than likely going to see a new head coach at the end of this season for the New Orleans Pelicans. So, and what does Morago bring to the table, you may ask? Well, Morgo has earned a reputation as having a sharp offensive mind in his final season with the Hornets in 2021 and 2022. Charlotte ranked eighth in offensive efficiency, sixth in three-point attempts, and fifth in pace. The Hornets finished with a 43 and 39 record that season and haven’t won 30 games in a season since. So, and I know what you’re probably saying, and I know because I’ve said it. I I thought it I thought it myself. If he’s such an offensive mind, why does this team struggling offensively, [Laughter] you know, which kind of makes sense to me? It makes sense to me. Why is this team still struggling offensively if you are the offensive mastermind that put in this play? My my thing is I think this roster has been constructed to have personnel to sort of run an offense that James Morgo would want to off run, but it’s just not the right personnel. It’s just not the right personnel because the this team’s biggest issue in my opinion. It continues to be the ro what are we putting out there on the floor rotational wise and situational basketball situations. I don’t I don’t think this team has a problem scoring. I have a problem I think this team has a problem with how they go about scoring. Does that make sense? This team doesn’t run an offense. Everybody stands around the three-point line and just watches whoever has the ball. No one cuts. No one really sets picks outside of the key, outside of the top of the key. You see how they do? They they try to run this offense at the top of the key with the center, whoever’s at center. And they all do it above the three-point line, which is insane to me. No one tries to get close to the goal to try to get a high percentage easier shot. Everybody is three hunting with this team, which concerns me about Barago and this offense, which is really going to concern me about this because if Burggo is is heartbeat on let’s shoot more three-pointers, this is not a threepoint shooting team outside of Trey Murphy. You getting one or two three-pointers from all these guys. a couple of nights. Sometimes they might be streaking hit two or three. Otherwise, you’re not getting a whole lot of three-pointers from this team. They jack up at least 30 three-pointers a night. 30 30 30 35 three-pointers a night and usually make about 10 of them. So, that’s that would be my concern if James Moro would try to continue the three point office. When I continue to argue that you have enough bigs in place, you have enough of a front court in place. Yeah, I know Zion’s not there, but you still have enough talent on the front court to try to make some offensive move that closer to the basket. That’s going to be my and this pace thing. Like, you’re horrendous on transition defense. So, why are you still trying to play with pace and try to get up the court fast? You’re horrendous on the get back on the defense. That’s going to be the problem. Like, I think that’s what’s concerning me about Morgo. And that’s also why I don’t think Morgo is getting the job job as of yet. He’s not He’s only interim for the time being because I really do believe Jay uh Joe Dumar wants to get somebody else in there and gets a whole new staff in there. So, but y’all have gotten y’all wish. Willie Green is no longer the head coach of New Orleans Pelicans. And you know, I’m not excited about it. I’m not happy about it because I from what I’ve seen with this team, the way they they hustle, they don’t hustle, the way they stand around and just watch stuff is just concerning to me if the roster is correct. And if this guy could get this roster to turn around and make it make it do what it do, that’s just my concern on that. I do have some concerns, but I will be in the building for the first night of the James Burggo era tomorrow night against the Warriors and the Thunder uh on Monday night. So, I will be at both of those games. Uh immaculate timing. I guess we going to get to see how the Pelicans are going to look. Are they going to look any different with James Morgo at the helm? We will see. Clap back with your thoughts, though. The Willie Green era is over in New Orleans. Clapback with your thoughts. James Morgo is currently the interim head coach, interim. So that means we could be going coach shopping at the end of the year. Who do you want to see as the head coach of the Pelicans? Who Who’s your wish list on your wish list as we get ready to go into the holidays? Cuz all I wanted for Christmas was a new head coach. Wish they'd talk to a Rondo. High caliber player, looking to coach.
The empty seats convince them
GB is the reason this took so long but people not coming is hurting her pockets so it time to
Mike Malone please !!!!
MAN Thank U 4 hitting ALL the points wrong w this team & JB
With Zion injured, Queen should be starting at power forward and Trey Murphy at the three.
Mel, what’s popping? The Coach that fired at Denver…he is a helluva Coach
Yes, Malone
Now fire Mickey Loomis.
Hello…..Mark Jackson 🎉🎉
Actually right now Herb Jones has better 3 point shot percentage than Trey. Trey like Ingram is to light in the ass when you have a back vet shorter than you in Bruce Bowen lock you down, everyone been getting physical with Trey. Yes the pelicans have been bad at 3 point percentage but that’s where the game has gone so you have to run sets to get people open. The Pels biggest problem is defense you are the second to last place team in points allowed. Also the poor 3rd quarter wasn’t all on Willie it was on players as well
Willies ego was too big, he NEVER listened to Borrego or any other assistant coach
Tom thibbau or Mike Malone
So it have begun. Now Joe go out and find the coach for this team and start cleaning house.
He been needed to go he killed Jordan Hawkins conference..and Hawkins can stroke it .. Willie is a emotional hoe .. mat Ryan should still be on the team
70 games let! Not giving up yet
I hear you voice getting better G
✊🏾💪🏾
The NBA is rigged has been for a long long time. Everytime we play a team like the lakers Golden State the refs give them all the calls all of them. Aside from that Willie sucks he let the opponent score 14 points before calling time out to stop there momentum ..same thing other teams do to us…we get moving they call time out quickly….not Willie tho he sucks bad monte Williams was way better and he sucked here to
Feel like as a listener we’ve made it through the trenches lol let’s Geaux Pels!
Roster too good to be looking like dis, good thing about it , still have 70 games left. …rough start finish strong
Zion Williamson is the issue
I have been saying the same thing all year so far. I don't know what kind of offense they are trying to run where everyone just stands outside the 3-point line and waits for the person with the ball to do something. No one cutting to the lane, no picks and many times 3 people all on the same side of the court. They also literally dribble around until there is hardly any time in the shot clock and throw up a rushed or highly contested shot at the last second way too often. Everyone standing outside the 3-point line also puts them in no kind of position to get rebounds when someone inevitably misses their shot, or even worse, a lot of times you see them start heading back down to the other end of the court as soon as the ball is shot not even trying to get rebounds. Even on defense there seems to be a lack of effort in getting rebounds as you watch players stand flat footed waiting for the ball to come down instead of going up to get it, which has led to many of the opposing teams having second and third shot opportunities. To top it all off the coach just did not show any kind of urgency or intensity when things were obviously going wrong on the court. This last game when he got tech'd up was the most animated he has been all year, but it was too little too late. The team has a talented roster, hopefully a change in coaching will be able to get the best out of this team.
Defense and not stopping the ball . Don’t remember anyone picking up offense Charges?? BB 101 …. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Looney should be starting. If anything DQ should be starting at PF not center.. you guys kill me with this small ball fetish while the league is getting taller again..
Looney or DJ should be starting while DQ or Zion when healthy should be pf. Trey and herb SF.. THIS TEAM IS DEEP and have multiple rotations able to play..
Team needs to stop matching other teams and make them match the pels
