Our 3rd down defense is terrible tho
You got spoiled. This is the mean rearing its ugly head. We werent gonna keep winning games with that offense
For all the doom and gloom, we are the opposite of last year—losing close games against good teams.
If we can manage to win 1 or 2 to get to the playoffs, we are a good team. We will always have a great chance at winning it all with this crew.
Even as frustrating as this team has been, we are still a better team, IMO, than last year.
Hey why wasn’t I able to post on the toub comment about trump
This is like some of those Rivers’ Chargers teams. Would be top 10 in offense/defense and end up 7-9.
Because offense is trash.
So…our defense is better than Denver’s?
Chiefs defense is middle of the pack at best. The “points allowed” is a product of the Chiefs offense having the longest average drive time in the league, and teams playing against us also having long clock eating drives. The defense is around 15th by DVOA, and 23rd in 3rd down stop %.
We run a slow, plodding offense that runs the play clock down to nothing whether we are winning or losing that shrinks the game down. Which worked great when the defense could get a stop, but is pretty much just losing us games now as we try to rely on it in the 4th quarter to win games and it’s failed every time this year.
Also, I’m tired of people talking about the 1 score games like they’re the same as last year. Last year we were almost always winning in the 4th, quite a few of those games we had a 2 score lead that got knocked down to 1 score. This year we’ve been losing/tied in the 4th in 4/5 losses, and the other team finished the game out in all of them.
The reason we’re losing all these 1 score games is cause the team has no urgency, no real interest in playing with a lead against the good teams. We pretty much let the other team control the game with no worry they might lose.
Their points per drive and EPA per play are pretty average iirc, so I think a lot of this just comes from the offense eating up tons of clock and limiting the numbers drives the defense is on the field.
Turns out points allowed doesn’t really tell you how good a defense is
How do we simultaneously have such great defensive points allowed, horrible third down numbers, AND good offensive numbers but we’re still losing? Truly one of the seasons of all time
You gotta take this with some other stats though, don’t chiefs religiously have an extremely low possessions per game the last 3 years? I’d be curious where their PPD is at, definitely not quite as good
Even with this were probably the worst 3rd down defense in the league somehow
‘Situational football’ is fluky. Very good teams can typically win a majority of their close games, but you’re likely talking 60-65% tops. 12-0 last year was fluky. 0-5 this year is equally fluky. These things have a way of leveling themselves out over time. We’re just functioning as a statistical outlier at the moment and it’s frustrating.
Literally one huge red zone turnover has cost the Chiefs 3 games. This isn’t a talent issue; it’s more a perfect storm of mental errors and absolutely the worst times possible.
The issue is the disparity between “home” Chiefs and “away” Chiefs.
Little over 28 pts, a game average on offense, and a little over 13 points a game allowed at home vs. a little over 23 points scored per away games and a little over 24 points allowed on defense.
Our overall numbers looked similar last year, but we were more consistent game to game.
The Chiefs have like 41 or 42 away penalties, and like 28 home penalties.
Mahomes is like a 113 QB rating at home and a 84 or 85 on the road.
It goes on and on. This team is breaking down on road trips and they need to figure out why.
It’s just awful. 90% of the time this team is great and then they pick the worst most crucial part of a game to suck.
Raiders scoring Zero points kind of skews this stat to our favor. Bad team or not, shut outs are rare in this league.
I tried to post a graph of the power rankings. We are actually near the top in both offense and defense. Frustrating indeed.
Remember when he was almost breaking records for touchdowns? What happened?

This shit turns around this week with 2 wins.
