Song has been a rumored Giants target for awhile now and plays for the same KBO team JHL did before coming over.

29 years old and had his two breakout seasons the past couple of years. He's coming over a little bit older, because he served time in the military. Song should not be nearly as expensive as Lee was. He can play 2B and 3B and hits left handed.

Potential option for 2B if they're not sold on Schmitt or a possibility for a utility role (play 3B when Chapman needs rest).

So far the international players who have been posted include:

-RHP Tatsuya Imai (Japan)

-INF Kazuma Okamoto (Japan)

-INF Muntaka Murakami (Japan)

-RHP Kona Takahashi (Japan)

-INF Sung-Mun Song (Korea)

  1. I really don’t like the idea of spending any significant money on any unproven KBO players and especially one who doesn’t have significant developmental years ahead of him. There’s been one KBO **position** player who had a lengthy successful career (Choo Shin-soo). He is the only Korean born KBO position player to ever make an MLB all star team. In all of MLB history. One guy. There just isn’t much of a track record of success from the KBO on the hitting side of things. Players see all the success of players from the NBP and want to extrapolate that to KBO players, but the talent gap between the KBO and the NPB is wide and Japanese players have had far more success in the majors over the years.

This isn’t to say the gamble on JHL wasn’t worth it, I don’t want to suggest that. The jury is still out on if that is a good deal or not, and it largely has to do with how he continues to develop over the next few years because he was still young when they signed him. It may have been a huge overpay, it may have been a great signing, it may have been ok. We don’t know yet but he still had developmental years ahead of him. What we do know however is that there just is not a big track record of success from the KBO and I really dont know that it makes much sense committing any serious dollars to another KBO player when you don’t even know if you can develop the first one, especially one who is already 29 years old.

  2. Platooning Hyseong Kim and Schmitt this season would’ve been great. Might be worth a shot if he’s inexpensive like 3/$12M
