This SECRET Is Why the Phoenix Suns Can’t Stop Winning

[Applause] Suns will make it five straight. They’ll improve to eight and five, six and one here on the home floor. The Phoenix Suns have had a much better start to the season than many expected with most experts and casuals slotting the Suns in as a bottom feeder team after they shipped Kevin Durant to Houston this off season. But with an eight and five record and winning five straight, the Suns are rolling. And the reason for it is something none of us expected. After the Suns traded Kevin Durant for Jaylen Green and Dylan Brooks this summer, looked like the team had destined itself for years of mediocrity like they saw in the 2010s. It wasn’t the hall that many thought the Suns would get for the superstar that is Kevin Durant. And after some bad moves by GM James Jones and owner Matt Ishbia felt like maybe the Suns were lost. They didn’t know where they were going. But a draft night trade solved all of the Suns issues. What were the Suns issues last year? Defense paint scoring. The defensive anchor for this team was Kevin Durant last year and that needed to change. When the Suns acquired center Mark Williams from the Hornets on draft night kind of went under the radar a little bit. Williams has always been regarded as an elite talent, but a guy that can’t stay healthy. Lakers tried to trade for him at the deadline last year and he failed his physical and the trade was vetoed. So what did Mark Williams bring to the Phoenix Suns over these first 12 games? 13 games. Mark Williams brought an elite defensive presence. He’s in the 90th percentile in terms of odd off rating with a 17 point difference. The the Suns are a net 17 points better when Mark Williams is on the court. Much of that starts with the defense. When you look at points per possession defensively, teams are scoring 12 less points on him with him on the court. He anchors the defense in a way that a center like Nick Richards or Yousef Nerkage can’t. Now, the Suns got Nick Richards last season and they had been happy with the production he was bringing, but ultimately he is just a backup center and a former teammate of Mark Williams. Last year, this team was kind of soft, headlined by players like Bradley Beal and Kevin Durant. It wasn’t a physical team and not what the Suns needed to impose their will. The offense clearly wasn’t there last year and they needed the defense to follow. Defense wasn’t doing that. So, it was up to the Suns management to instill a team and instill a vibe and a culture of defensive tenacity. You have a guy like Ryan Dunn already on the roster. Ryan Dunn can provide plenty of defense all by himself. He is a stud. He doesn’t need to do anything offensively. As long as he continues to be locked down defensively, Suns will be all right with the production he’s giving them. But when you trade for a guy like Dylan Brooks, trade for a guy like Mark Williams, you start adding guys that pride themselves on being impactful on the defensive end. And bringing in those guys has almost immediately played dividends. Over the last six games, the Suns are fourth in defensive rating, sitting at around 110. And it should be better than that. The Suns have been in blowout after blowout, resting starters as early as, you know, 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. If the Suns played their defensive players, their defensive stars for an entire game, that defensive rating would be a lot lower. You could look at it maybe being around 105 to 108. And that would put them among the league’s best, right up there with the Hawks, right up there with the Pistons. The Suns would be sitting in elite company. But how is Mark Williams led to all of this? And is he the sole reason for the Suns being this good defensively? Well, he’s not the sole reason. There’s been a buyin on this team that wasn’t there last year. You see guys like Royce O’Neal and Grayson Allen playing some of the best ball of their career alongside Devin Booker who seems to have refound his spark as the primary scoreer. But Mark Williams, he his impact comes down in the paint. As I said earlier in this video, Kevin Durant was that paint defender that the Suns had to rely on for all of last season. But Mark Williams actually has the capability to lock down the paint. When Mark doesn’t have to focus on guarding any wing shooters like Kevin Durant did, he can focus on hunkering down and making sure that guys aren’t getting free passes to the rims. And it felt like last year teams were able to just funnel their guys and score and score and score. And the Suns weren’t able to do anything about it. But with Mark, things have been different this year. In the half court, the Suns have been much better this year, giving up only 93 points per 100 possessions. It’s a total buyin from the team that starts with the paint defense of Mark Williams. Now, let’s talk about Dylan Brooks and Jaylen Green because those were the guys headlining that Kevin Durant trade package this summer. Now, Jaylen Green looked really good offensively in his first game against the Clippers and then unfortunately did go down in the first quarter of the next game against the Clippers. But Dylan Brooks in the time that he’s played has looked really good. He helps he helps defensively and he’s a pest and he’s a menace. He brings a tenacity and a style of play to this team that they haven’t had in years. And I want to give a lot of credit to coach Jordan Kn. We weren’t really sure how the start of his coaching tenure would go, but he’s letting Devin Booker play. He’s letting Grayson Allen play. He’s letting Royce O’Neal, Ryan Dunn, Oso, Dylan, all of these guys impact the game in a variety of ways. It can’t be understated how important that is. We heard Bradley Beal complaining after that first Suns game, that first Suns loss for the Clippers that the Suns didn’t let him play. And wow, he’s a horrible player to use for this example. I think that I think that holds some merit. I think Frank Vogle and Mike Boonhoer did not let their guys play. Everyone’s so worried about making sure Kevin Durant gets the ball. And that’s okay. He’s one of the greatest players of all time. But when you take away from the strengths of everybody else on your team, that can often times be a detriment. We didn’t have the right guys coaching those teams. They didn’t know how to deal with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal all being on the same team. Now that we’ve removed two of those players from the equation, Jordan seems up to the task of managing this team. There’s not as many egos. Guys are ready to play and a lot of guys are playing for contracts. Guys like Colin Gillespie have exploded this year. So, when it comes down to it, the Suns, they just look so much better. And at the worst, they’re just a more fun team to watch. Uh, it’s been miserable for years. Suns fans won’t sugarcoat it. It has been a horrible watch. These guys did not look like they were having fun in years. Now, there’s a joy with this team. A lot of younger guys, a lot of guys that are hungry trying to prove themsel in the association. And it shows. This Suns team’s going to be entertaining. And trust me, they are going to make a push for a playoff spot. Can I guarantee that they’ll make it in? No. Are guys going to get injured? Is Devin Booker likely going to miss some time this year and the team’s going to look horrible when he’s gone? Yeah. Yeah. He’s been incredible and without him, this team goes nowhere. So, temper the expectations a little bit. The Suns are going to be very solid this year. A lot of people didn’t see it coming, but maybe you did. Let me know what you think about this Suns team and how maybe they can even improve from here. What are some of their shortcomings? They have been really good from three. They’ve been really good in their paint defense. Their mid-range defense has also been incredible. So, how can the Suns improve? And or is this just a mirage? And are the Suns going to come back down to earth once they start playing real teams? Cuz a lot of these teams that they’ve been playing aren’t exactly the cream of the crop. But anyways, thanks for watching. Clad’s be making Sun’s videos again.

  1. Man as a Rockets fan I’m rooting for the suns. Sucked to see Dillon brooks leave, the dude is so fun to watch and is so contagious with his energy. Jalen is really good too I hope they have success

  2. Last year our hot start was all Durant and luck in very close games, when he, one player went down they lost it. This year it's a TEAM. Sure we will face tougher competition but that's ok bring em on!

  3. I wish I had bet on the ridiculous Las Vegas odds of how many games the Sun's would win this year. They are clearly grittier, younger and hungrier than last year. They may not win a championship but teams are going to hate playing the Sun's this year.

  4. Im Ngl they prob gonna be one of the best teams this season. They did this exact same thing the season they went to the finals everything just started clicking for them. Not saying theyre going to the finals but I think people are still underrating them.
