Vikings Beat Writer Takes Flame Thrower to JJ “MythCarthy”…………

[Music] What’s going on, Jeromes? So, the whole Darnold JJ McCarthy thing has been hammered to death at this point and uh it’s a tangible talking point right now because Sam Darnold is looking really good, looking like a MVP candid with the Seattle Seahawks. Jonathan James McCarthy four starts into his career had some highs, had some lows, just needs some consistency and the Vikings ultimately chose to bet on nine. Feeling fine with nine. You got JJ McCarthy, Kevin McConnell, and Quy Doofmensa all synced up with basically with JJ’s rookie deal. So, they’re all in, all in. And of course, some of the returns uh were not so great uh against the Falcons, but also remember that was that week where he had like one day of practice because his kid was born and he was uh rightfully at the hospital seeing his kid being born. Offensive line is in shambles. This is also the last time the Falcons look good. Yeah. Uh, but of course, are are we pretending like this didn’t happen? You know, the come from behind win, three touchdowns fourth quarter against the Bears, three touchdown performance, and a W against the Lions at home, all that stuff. Plus, uh, he got the Michigan man to Michigan man. Hail to the We know that, right? And we’ve gotten a glimpse already again, four starts, JJ McCarthy’s intensity, alter ego 999. But we’ve said this, McCarthy, he’s the most overanalyzed and overs scrutinized quarterback in NFL history. And I say that with a little hyperbole, but not much, right? Because everything, it’s so it’s so freaking weird. Did you see this for Caleb Williams? Maybe to a degree. Did you see this last year with Jaden Daniels? No. See this with Drake May? No. See this with Bo Nicks? No. Pennix Mightier? No. Spencer Rattler? No. See that this year with Cam Ward? No. Tyler Shuck. No. Why does JJ McCarthy have to be perfect every single snap? Little finger down the seam of his trousers or why why can’t he just be treated like every firstear starting quarterback? There’s going to be some good moments. There’s going to be some bad moments. Strive for consistency and growth and get better game overame. How about that? How about that? Uh, and of course with Kevin McConnell, the quarterback whisper, hey, even though Kevin McConnell like had some ups and downs this season, definitely trust him and his quarterback evaluation and putting his quarterbacks in in the best spots to succeed. It’s going to be a work in progress with JJ McCarthy as again Kevin McConnell like he’s worked well with Kurt Cousins won a Super Bowl. Matthew Stafford with the Rams after doing Jack squat with the Lions. um you know look good to the passionat look good with slinging Sam Darnold but this is his first homegrown franchise quarterback if you don’t count the Mormon miss out Jiren Hall right long story longer so Purple Persuasion pointed this out it was um article written by Matthew Coller which kind of explains why Kevin McConnell was sort of cold with at the press conference on on Wednesday but this is what Coller wrote nobody knows what’s going to become of McCarthy no matter how loud they talk. Okay. Uh at the same time, the team didn’t plan on things being this rocky. If they fall out of the playoff race, I’m sure the goalpost will be moved in terms of what 2025 was supposed to be when players uh wear mortgage required shirts and spends enough money to build a tower in New York City. They are building a tower for $350 million in New York City. Come on, man. Um, I mean, all that is going to bribes, but we can safely say that this is this team is expected to win. Fans are right to set the bar high and expect McCarthy to lead this team over a lot of wins right away because that was a signal that they were sent by the Vikings moving out from Darnold and not signing Jones/ Rogers. Oh, R. Okay. So, if JJ McCarthy JJ McCarthy is to blame for the Pittsburgh loss, okay, it wasn’t uh the inability to stop DK Mechaf. It wasn’t the inability to stop Kenneth Gainwall. It wasn’t uh Carson Wentz’s inability to drive down, get inside a field goal range for Will Rackard, which is basically 70 yards. Okay. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. See, JJ McCarthy is to blame for the Eagles loss when Carson Wentz and the Vikings offense were one of six in the red zone. Oh. Oh. Lo. Oh. Oh. JJ McCarthy is to blame for the Chargers no call, no show game. Oh, yeah. How dare he not show up for the game. Oh, wait. He didn’t play. Okay, but you know, Brad Stacks, JJ McCarthy’s two and two, right? And he’s had some great moments. He’s had some moments he he certainly wants back, but what what else do do you expect? And speaking of moving goalposts, like this is pure moving goalpost. And again, this is like uh a tactic you blame your opponent for doing the thing that you’re doing. This is so wild. And of course, it always comes back to hurling a brick at the Vikings for like, oh, sir, should have brought back Darnold or Rogers or Daniel Jones. This is the best. But just because everyone had a year to invent myth McCarthy, I bet she wants a pulitzer for that one. A flawless instant franchise quarterback doesn’t mean it was ever a lock to come true. It’s clear now that there are a lot of steps that need to be taken and just having a good passing scheme and Jefferson doesn’t allow you to take an elevator to the top. Wow. Again, talking about revisionist history, like hey, long-term, yes, firmly believe that the the Minnesota Fed Vikings, uh, JJ McCarthy, Kevin McConnell will win multiple Super Bowls. All right, that we’ve never wavered on that. And we said, “Hey, you have a three-year Super Bowl window where McCarthy is on his rookie deal before that fifth year option kicks in and it’s a crimp on your salary cap or you can build an FU team around him.” No one ever said that McCarthy was going to come out and win a Super Bowl his first season. Now, of course, we said that he was set up for success as potentially no other quarterback in NFL history, including 2018 Patrick Mahomes. Uh because the offense again where he hasn’t played a single snap behind the offensive line that was promised to him where things are getting better. Uh but tell that to him the first two games especially the one where he got banged up against Atlanta as well as his defense. I don’t know like the defense is improving but something’s been missing with his defense all year. Whether it’s vibes, whether it’s turnovers, whether it’s whatever on paper, on purpose, this team was good to go. Oh, but see, it’s JJ McCarthy’s fault that he missed five games with a severe high ankle sprain, which he played through, by the way, in the fourth quarter against the Falcons. Oh, R. Oh. Oh, it’s his fault that that he had to miss five games and Carson Wentz was in here. Oh, he’s getting all the blame for the season uh because of what Carson Wentz did and inefficiencies of the uh offensive line and the deficiencies of the defense at times as well. Oh, Rar. Oh, it’s his fault. And and again, I I love it. I’m sure the goal post will be moved. He’s literally moving the goalpost himself. It’s like it’s like you’re a downtrodden college football team and you just upset the number 25 team in the nation. Move the goalpost. It’s just so it’s just so wild, right? And JJ McCarthy is being held up to this impossible standard and it’s a binary things like either he’s a Hall of Famer or he’s a bust. He’s Garbagio. And it’s so funny because, you know, both both sides do this too. I I’ll admit that where I obviously believe in JJ McCarthy and obviously the comeback against the Bears, great. The come uh the win against the Lions, great. Uh couple moments against the Ravens, great, some not so great, right? But for me, that’s enough to prove, you know, the high highs that everything can be scalable and he will be a franchise quarterback even though small sample size. Uh now the haters and losers will say, “Well, uh he succeeded a couple times, but small sample size.” Well, we got to wait and see. But if JJ McCarthy ever screws up, Aha! I told you. Bust bust bust bus buzz bust. All right. And also, so again, nothing against the beat writers. I feel like most of them work really hard and really respectful like really love uh rags. will really love Dne. Uh Kevin Seafford, ESPN who’s not Carl Gchman does good work. Same with Gestling Kramer. But I don’t know, like I feel like that there’s some beat writers that are just like obviously no cheering in the press box and writers don’t have to run PR for the team obviously, but some beat writers literally root for the team to be abysmal and fail, right? because they feel like I it’s the old mentality of if it bleeds it leads. I I if a a team is a dumpster fire that they’ll get more ratings and clicks and stuff, which the opposite is obviously true. So, I don’t know. Anyways, let but the whole myth McCarthy, come on, man. Uh, so you’re you’re saying you’re telling me that the McCarthy supporters, the people who believe that, hey, kid’s talented, he’s got the right mentality, he’s going to work great with Kevin McConnell, and they’re going to have success long term, bring home a couple Super Bowls. If you believe that, you believe that JJ McCarthy needs to be an allpro through four career NFL starts. Otherwise, you’re wrong. How’s it feel? Uh but I don’t know like the discourse around Jayen McCarthy has gotten absolutely asinine and insane right and it’s a roarshack test because he he’s obviously had some peak moments he’s obviously had some bad moments so it really is just confirmation bias on both sides because no one went into this with a neutral opinion on JJ McCarthy. No one. All right. either you thought that he was a loser who Harbaugh was trying to hide at Michigan and you disagree with the draft pick. So, you’re going to hold it against the kid. Uh, as long as he plays for your favorite team, by the way. I hope I’m wrong. JJ McCarthy looks good. Well, I hope I’m wrong or you support the kid because he was drafted by your favorite team and that’s what you do, right? But I don’t know. I I I just can’t wait till till he gets 20 30 starts under his belt. Just completely jamming it right in the face of the haters and the losers. But I I’ll say this. Did Christian Ponder ever have moments like this? Did Ferris Jackson, rest in power, did did Teddy Oh, maybe Teddy. Yeah. Also, where’s Caleb Williams moments like this? Where’s Jane? Well, Jane Daniels had a couple. Where’s Bo Knicks? Where where’s all that? Right. So, I I believe this is much closer to what JJ McCarthy is going to be rather than this, which had a myriad of issues going on that week anyway. But it’s been talked about to death. But it’s okay. Just give it time to prove all the haters and the loser wrong. And I just can’t wait until Myth McCarthy Vikings win their first Super Bowl with JJ McCarthy and Kevin McConnell.
