HATE WEEK: New Orleans Saints’ Defense Must LIMIT Bijan Robinson, DISRUPT Kirk Cousins To Get Win

The New Orleans Saints, if they want to get a win this weekend against their bitter rival Atlanta Falcons in a big game, limiting Tyler Algier and Bejian Robinson, of course, are the biggest pieces that they’ll need to find success in in order to make that happen. And these two running backs combined for three rushing touchdowns just last week against the Carolina Panthers in their 27-30 loss. That’s all three touchdowns that Atlanta scored and are a big part of what it is that Atlanta does on offense, of course, right? No big surprise there. They should be that is a huge part of that should be they would be a huge part of anybody’s offense uh in the NFL. No exceptions when it comes to uh Atlanta uh of course. And so when we take a look at sort of the rushing totals between these two players right now, uh, Bejian Robinson sitting with 783 rushing yards on the season, including four touchdowns. He’s averaging five yards per carry. Five yards per carry right now across the entire season. That’s absolutely outstanding. He’s also added over 500 receiving yards in a pair of receiving touchdowns as well. So limiting him is more than just limiting the run game, but it is going to be a big part of it, right? Taking away his ability to be able to have a major impact on the ground would be effectively what could win the Saints this game on Sunday. Tyler Algier 280 280 yards, but seven rushing touchdowns. He’s the guy they go to in sort of the short yardage red zone situations. When they’re close to scoring a a touchdown, they put Tyler Algier in and they let him kind of be the bruiser between the tackles. He averages just 3.6 yards per carry, but is uh not super active in the passing game, only seven receptions on the season. So, when you’re taking a look at what it is that these two backs do, it’s pretty simple to break it down, right? Bjon is the explosive, dynamic um playmaker of a running back that can contribute in the run game as well as in the passing game. While Tyler Algier is a guy that’ll go in to help you with the run, with pass blocking on third down, third and long, obvious passing situations, he’s their go-to short yardage back, third and one, uh, or third and goal when they’re close, first, second, third, and goal when they’re close, uh, there in the red zone. And he’ll end up getting a lot of those short yardage opportunities. So, you got a bruiser and you got a breakaway. Those are the two guys that you got to be ready for. But here’s the thing that we know about the Atlanta Falcons rushing offense, and this was true last year as well, but going into this year, the Atlanta Falcons are number one in the league when it comes to rushes outside of the tackles. If it wasn’t for the New Orleans Saints offense last year under Clint Kubak, who now is calling a very, very different style of run game over in Seattle. Uh, but if it wasn’t for the Saints last year, Atlanta would have been number one last year as well. But at over 70% according to NextG stats NFL pro, the Atlanta Falcons are running outside of the tackle. So if you want to limit their run game, you’ve got to be able to first of all beat them to the point of attack. We saw Demario Davis do this extremely well against Rico Dattle and the Carolina Panthers last week on inside runs. Now you want to see them do it against Bjan Robinson in particular and the Atlanta Falcons run game on those outside runs. So, beat them to the point of attack and then be ready to close out for those cut back lanes and those bounce around options. Those are going to be two of the biggest things here, too. This is a Zack Robinson offense. They want to run the zone run. They want to stretch the defense out, but then provide some of those interior cutback lanes so that the running back has effectively three options on every run. Win to the outside, bounce back to the inside, or reverse field and cut all the way back around. This is something that James Cook, the running back for the Buffalo Bills, did really really well also. So, these are going to be a big piece or or these are going to be big pieces rather to what is going to go into either creating that Atlanta Falcons run game or limiting that Atlanta Falcons run game. And the Saints have got to be ready for that. Then they’ve got to be ready to cover out of the backfield. The New Orleans Saints second level of linebackers, Deario Davis, Pete Wernern, and then at times Isaiah Stalurn on third downs. And for the third drive in each half, Danny Stzman are going to be under a lot of pressure in this game, both covering some of those tight ends. We expect a lot more 12 personnel, two tight end sets from Atlanta with them being down. We expect Drake London, who did not practice on Wednesday, nor on Thursday. And so, they’re going to be under a lot of pressure limiting those tight ends, as will Alante Taylor in the slot. However, their job’s not going to be done there, right? They’ve got to defend the run and they got to be ready for Bejon Robinson out of the back field as well who has almost as many receiving yards as he has passing yards or excuse me uh receiving yards as he has rushing yards short by just over 200. So for New Orleans, the dynamic play of Bejan Robinson is what has to be in focus. The reason why I say that the Saints need to do against Atlanta what they did against Carolina is that Carolina’s most dynamic threat was in the backfield as well with Rico Dole. And they did a very good job limiting Rico Dole both in the passing game and in the run game and forcing Bryce Young to beat them through the air. You kind of want to do the same thing here with Kirk Cousins because look, that’s a veteran quarterback. If he beats you, he beats you. But challenge him and put him in a situation and do it. The last time that Kirk Cousins had to start a game for the Atlanta Falcons without Drake London, they scored 10 points, the Atlanta Falcons did, up against a bad football team in the Miami Dolphins who put up 34 on the other side. And so for New Orleans, the formula is there. Not just because of what Miami happened to be able to find success with up against Kurt Cousins and the Miami Dolphins, which was bring some pressure, disguise those looks, take away the deep shot, but and then of course try to take away the run game, but you have your own blueprint from what you did up against the Carolina Panthers just before the by-week plus a by-week to really focus in on this. So, Kell Moore gets a chance here to show what he and Brandon Staley and the rest of this New Orleans Saints coaching staff can do off of by-weeks in a pretty measurable situation here. Kurt Cousins up in that game week eight against the Dolphins completed one pass of 20 plus yards. Dolphins took away the deep ball and all the passes, most of the the work that he did was between the hashes and the numbers on those sides of the field on either side of the field within 10 yards. Limit the perimeter, take the top off, limit the run game, box them in. That’s what the New Orleans are going to have to do if they want to beat the Atlanta Falcons. And over on the offensive side for New Orleans, they’ll be down another player at wide receiver with another surprising shakeup. Let’s break down how the New Orleans Saints handle the loss of Brandon Cooks next as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked On Saints, part of Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. The hits just keep coming for the New Orleans Saints wide receiver room just 2 weeks after Rasheed Shahid was traded to the Seattle Seahawks for a fourth and fifth round selection in the 2026 NFL draft. Brandon Cooks, who was also a part of a lot of trade conversations as we understand it, is now has now been released or or will soon be released. I I’ll explain what I mean by that here in a moment. U the the move with Brandon Cooks does make a lot of sense for both sides. Uh Dylan Sanders and I kind of broke this down on like a short on a vertical video a few days ago when this happened or or a day ago when this happened. But the the idea here being that when Brandon Cook signed with the Saints, the Saints were in a really really different situation. Derek Carr was their quarterback, which didn’t necessarily mean that they were going to win games if you ask me, but they were going to be more competitive. they were, you know, they had the veteran quarterback and they were going to go out there and try to, you know, put a win now team out on the field again and all these other things. You saw Tyron Matthew at safety, which by the way, go and check out his new show. They still had a draft ahead of them that would have been focused on building around and building up the offense rather than that might have been used that way rather than, you know, going in and drafting a, you know, the the next quarterback effectively. Also, things like that. that the vibe the the the points the the the compass was just different for the team when Brandon Cook signed and by the time that the season began they were a very different team right Derek Carr retired Tyron Matthew retired the Saints made a couple different moves they started trading for wide receivers and adding more pieces into that wide receiver room even planning for 2026 more so than planning for 2025 in some instances such as the trade for Devon Ble such as the trade for Jaylen Pope such as the uh waiverwire claim of Trey Palmer who and injured reserve. But all those pieces changed where the Saints were. And then of course the retirement of Derek Carr meant that the Saints were going into a situation to where they were trying to figure out who their quarterback was, which is a very very different place to be. Our guys over at Lock and NFL Scouting just did an entire episode about the um the idea of whether or not you know your team, whatever team that is, is a team that’s looking for a quarterback or a team that has their quarterback. And you can only be in one of those two categories. And the Saints are technically in the looking for their quarterback category because, you know, we’re still waiting to see more from Tyler Shuck at this time. So, it’s a very, very different place, very, very different situation for Brandon Cooks. Now, honestly, it was a very different situation for Brandon Cooks by the time the season started versus where it was that he signed. And so, him being a part of the trade conversations was no surprise because of that angle. him going and asking a team for a release is no surprise because of that very same angle. So, according to Kellen Moore, who told us on Wednesday that Brandon Cooks had requested to be released a few days before, but it took a little bit of time before anything really kind of came together because they were readjusting and making sort of adjustments to his contract to help to facilitate the release. And so, this is what I’m going to say about Brandon Cooks. From the moment that Brandon Cooks was in that locker room, he became a leader for that wide receiver room. He became a a leader for that offense. And from the moment that he showed up, he embraced that role. He was elected a team captain, which is not just coach input, but also voted on by the players. Um he was a great mentor here in New Orleans for guys like Chris Ave Typton Devon Vale this young wide receiver room otherwise that was around him and he never sulked he never looked down on his luck he always spoke to us in the media he was never in a situation to where you could look at him and say wow yeah he’s he’s clearly visibly frustrated now it was clear that there was some frustration and that was just watching on the field seeing what his role was he had like fourth quarter catches every game, but he wasn’t targeted very much here. All those other pieces that I’m sure were probably a frustrating part of the experience, but that frustration never seemed to permeate into what his role was with the team. And so for him to start at that place and end in the place of let me renegotiate my deal to facilitate your path as I ask to leave. I mean, just what a standup situation. and and what a great approach to all of this by Brandon Cooks. So, Brandon Cooks will eventually head to waiverss. There’s still some uh was Adam Shfter over at ESPN reported that there’s still some logistics to work out in terms of the contract renegotiation and things like that. Um Saints are still going to pick up some dead money, but it’s probably going to spread out now over the course of next couple years versus all accelerating into this year. Like, they’ll figure out a way to make that kind of stuff happen, but for the most part, like it doesn’t mean a ton. it won’t have a humongous impact one way or another on the same salary cap situation. So, you know, it’ be a few million dollars in debt money, a few million dollars in savings in some places, things like that. But there will be like cap hits and all these other things this year and next year more than likely as far as I understand it. So, all that said, to just kind of praise Brandon Cooks for coming in, embracing a situation, not being handed that situation, embracing the new situation for as long as he could, and then on his way out, still doing something to help make it all happen for his teammates and for himself. So, he’ll hit waiverss once he officially becomes released and then assuming that he clears waiverss, get the opportunity to go and sign somewhere where he might be able to contribute a little more and potentially win a ring. Like he’s a guy that deserves to compete at this point in his career. And the Saints of course were not on that pathway. So now for the Saints, what do they do at the wide receiver position moving forward? Well, you’ll have Chris Ave and Devon Vele who are going to be the top two guys at wide receiver. If you look back at their last game against Carolina, that was after Rasheed Shahed was traded. Devonte uh Devonte Devon Lee uh his snaps went up big time up to 87%. You saw him out there a ton helping as a run blocker. You saw him way downfield blocking for Alvin Chimera on the screen and then of course had that big third and 17 15 yard catch which led to a fourth and two that the Saints I I maintained should have gone for. Uh, but at the same time, Brandon Cooks’ snaps went all the way down to a season low 50%. And so it showed you where the Saints were going to funnel the additional resources of snaps and opportunities and we’re going to funnel that to Devon Vele. So now with Cooks out, where do those snaps end up getting funneled? I think Mason Typton becomes that guy. He becomes the clear out player. He become, which he did really well last year. He becomes the field stretcher and he probably becomes somebody that we finally get to see. Can he be somebody that can operate in a short and intermediate area? Can he be somebody that this Saints team leans on on, you know, third downs the way that they leaned on Brandon Cooks, right? Who caught many of his passes in the in the third and fourth quarter and made a lot of physical uh, you know, quick snatch catches and things like that. Like just incredible plays throughout. And so where does Mason Tipton filter into all that? Then the Saints reshuffled some things. They added uh former two-lane wide receiver Jaquan Jackson to the practice squad. Super excited to see if he can make it up to the active roster before the season’s over. Kevin Austin Jr. bumped up to the active roster to make that spot. And the Saints still have of course uh Ronnie Bell as well as Dante Pettis over in the practice squad. I would expect Dante Pettis to continue to get uh you know elevated because he’ll be able to contribute as a returner, but I think Jaquan Jackson eventually could do that as well with his 442 speed. So, I think that the Saints are mostly going to turn to Mason Typton right away, but we’ll see how this role and how these roles continue to be impacted as they move forward throughout the season. All right, coming up next, let’s dive into why the New Orleans Saints absolutely need to win this game against the Atlanta Falcons. We got that coming up for you as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked on Saints, part of Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Today’s episode of Locked on Saints brought to you by friends over at Game Time. The NFL season continues to roll along and just seven weeks left in the year. The New Orleans Saints desperately, desperately, desperately need to win this game. And there are several reasons why. We’ll start off with the obvious. This is a rivalry game. You can ask any Saints fan at any time, would you rather win or lose every single game and get the first overall pick or lose every single game and get the two wins of beating the Atlanta Falcons and get the second overall pick. And most Saints fans will tell you, “Give me that second overall pick.” Because this fan base hates losing to the Atlanta Falcons. And it wasn’t just a few years ago that we got one of the best moments ever, uh, followed by one of the worst moments ever in Saints franchise history, Jameus Winston going out there, victory formation in the red zone, turning around, handing the ball off to Jamal Williams. Jamal Williams running into the end zone. Arthur Smith at the time, the Atlanta Falcons head coach, runs out on the field, starts yelling and screaming at Dennis Allen. Darren Rizzy was ready to go to blows. He was ready to scrap. It was a whole thing. That was a great moment. Arthur Smith ends up getting fired by the time that he gets back to the Atlanta Falcons facility. Unfortunately, it was all spoiled by Dennis Allen apologizing to the Atlanta Falcons after that. But let’s just cut the story off. Let’s just cut the story off before that. U and it was great. It was a really, really good moment there. And so th this these two teams have a long history, right? They have a long history of things. everything from microphones not working during a celebration of hip hop in Atlanta to coaches getting fired to players swapping places, the old uh Dixie rivalry, like all this stuff. Like there was just there’s so much history between these two teams that when you have now an opportunity for your new head coach, your new starting quarterback who’s about to get his first home start in this rivalry situation. This is a game you want to win. This is a game that gets the fan base behind you, right? to where like you beat the Falcons here, you go to the next couple of weeks, struggle a little bit. You know, if that were to happen, you struggle a bit, fans are gonna go, you know what, that’s fine. That’s fine. That’s a better draft pick, blah blah blah, whatever. Beat the Falcons. You know what I’m saying? Like, it is something that you that like fans will hang their hats on that you can hang your hats on. This is a must-win for New Orleans, especially the one at home. Now, the Saints have a weird opportunity to repeat history in week 18, traveling to Atlanta to where if they go to Atlanta and they beat Atlanta, they might again be the team that beats the Falcons into firing their head coach cuz we could see that happen. We could also see former uh pro personnel u uh and assistant general manager Terry Fontnau out of Atlanta at the end of the season as well. So some big things potentially on the way for Atlanta who are in this disappointing 3 and seven situation while the Saints are in an optimistic 2 and8 situation. It’s so interesting the different trajectories of these two teams right now. So I think th those are all big reasons why you got to win this game. Another big reason goes to the point of Tyler Shuck. It’s his first home start. It’s his first big rivalry game. He said that he’s gleaned it. He knows that um Cam Jordan quote freaking hates those guys. I’ll tell you right now that, you know, Cam spoke to us on Monday. He did not use the uh approp not not appropriate, but he did not use the the the the the media friendly word there. Uh but it is true he does freaking hate the Fountains. The Falcons. The Falcons. Uh whatever. Same thing. Uh the Falcons, right? So, this is an opportunity here for Tyler Shuck to step into this role and then again galvanize the fan base, get the fans behind him as well, which I’ve seen a lot of fans start to be like, “Hey, it doesn’t matter who the quarterback is.” Like, as long as there’s a good quarterback and and my favorite team is winning. That’s all I care about. Like, I’m seeing a lot of fans talk that way right now. And this would be a great opportunity to take advantage of that step and kind of show, hey, look, two games got two in a row coming off the bye-week, a chance for three in a row at Miami next week. here’s an opportunity to get a big win up against a rival, all those other pieces. And so a a a great opportunity here for Tyler Shuck as well. Um when when we were kids before we had, you know, people come over, it was the same was the routine, right? You had to clean up the house, make sure everything was good, and then if the company if the company that was coming over wasn’t like your friend and it was like your parents’ friends, you had to be on your best behavior, right? You had to be on your best behavior in front of company. Well, the Saints are going to have company this weekend. And it’s not it’s not your best friends. It’s it’s your parents’ best friends. It’s your family’s best friends. It’s the team best friends. It’s it’s it’s Drew Brees coming in and calling the game who got a full-time spot now with Fox absolutely where he deserves to be and belongs in a broadcast booth. I’m very glad that he’s back at that after kind of getting the short end of the stick over there at NBC and now uh getting a chance as well to be reunited on the exact same day with the one, the only Jimmy Graham, who’s the legend of the game going into this game. Now, remember, there’s obviously a lot of history between Drew Brees and the Atlanta Falcons. The spin move. I guarantee you’re going to see that on broadcast, right? We all know the spin move. um the bent goalpost from um the Jeremy Graham touchdown and dunk, right? We all know where that took place, right? So, there’s you got company and you got to be on your best behavior and you got to show them a good time. Now, the Saints won with Drew in the building up against the Giants earlier this season. So, we finally they finally kind of we finally seen the Saints like break that little trend that they had going on to where anytime that Drew came over, you you had a bad day, right? You weren’t on your best behavior. Now Drew’s coming over and then they’ve had their best behavior last couple of times and so I’m sure that they’d like to do that again here as Drew and Adam Amin are calling this game for for Fox. So this is uh monumental opportunity in that area as well of like you’re fans are going to know that Drew Brees is calling this game. fans in the stands are going to see Jimmy Graham and if they’re wise Jimmy Graham goes out there and leads the pregame chant and if it’s if it’s allowed you find some way for Drew to go out there and be a part of that too. I don’t know if they could do that because he’s you know broadcast and everything like that but like you pull everything out for this you’re coming out of the bye-week. You’re rested. Tales Fang was back at practice on Thursday. We’ll see if he’s out there today on Friday and what that could potentially mean for his availability on Sunday. But your team is as healthy as your team can be knowing that you have an injured reserve stockpile and all that as every team does across the NFL at this point. But you also have um you know you got company, you have uh an opportunity to really pump this fan base up before the game starts and all those other pieces. And then beyond all of that, beyond any and all of that, I think that one thing that the Saints need to figure out a way to do and there’s no on andoff switch for this so we’ll see how it works. But the one of the biggest things that they’re going to need to do over the course of the rest of this year and next year is find a way to reestablish homefield advantage in the Superdome. And this game can start that. This is going to be a game where fans are going to be pumped, fans are going to be juiced, fans are going to be jazzed, everybody’s going to be ready to go. And the Saints just need to show up and hold up their end to the bargain. And if they do that, if they do that, we could see a big-time turning point for these home games and Domefield Advantage being back here in New Orleans. It could start on Sunday. All right, fam. No Saturday show this weekend. I’m officiating Jake’s wedding, but you can catch the squad show tonight and Sunday after the game, and I’ll see you after the game as well. We appreciate you very much as always, making us a party day, part of your routine for saying yes to me and the show. If you see me, please say hi.
