Adam Ottavino goes scorched earth on Carlos Mendzoa’s Mets bullpen usage: ‘They’re gonna be F–ked’

Can’t wait for the Mets to become the face of destroying pitchers’ arms when the Dodgers and Rays have been turning elbows to pulled pork for a decade straight with very little outrage.
wtf is he supposed to do? Only 2 of their 5 opening day starters cleared 120 innings. Ottavino wants to jerk himself and insinuate that he single-handedly kept the Mets pitchers healthy the year before but it’s a lot easier to not have to overwork then pen when you have 3 guys in Severino, Manaea and Quintana going 180 innings
Someone get Ottavino a margarita. He’s needs something to do with all this salt.
I think a few things are probably true – the Mets built their rotation in a way that would tax the pen (eg Holmes was converting and could only go so many innings, etc), injuries made that worse, Mendoza could have handled it better and bullpen management is an underrated manager skill, and Ottavino is a self important douche.
“scorched earth”
Dodgers bullpen got insanely overused due to most of our pitchers being hurt at the beginning of our season and the BP did great for the forest 33%of the season but they were overused and our era sky rocketed.
Ok cool now do the same for the starters who couldn’t get out of the 5th.
You could say this about most MLB teams. Starters rarely go longer than 6 innings any more. Finesse pitching is a rarity in the game. Sometimes you see 2-3 pitching changes in the same inning. Chalk it up to over reliance on data or the growing trend of overlooking pitchers flaws for velocity and you have so many mediocre pitchers unable to get out of an inning clean. It’s not a Mets problem, it’s a baseball problem.
Mendoza I’m gonna be honest is pretty terrible at bullpen management, it’s his absolute worst trait by far. I’ve been wrong about his lineups many MANY times but rarely have I been wrong when I second guess his bullpen usage.
He seems to have a knack for pulling guys early and using the bullpen when men on base. And we end up using a guy for 7 pitches in the 4th then bringing someone new for 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and having nobody to pitch the next day so we use a starter, a long guy and doubling down on the guy who threw 7 pitches yesterday instead of just using him the next inning and having a fresh arm the next day

I mean my bullpen would be tired and overused too if I had those starters. Not sure what he’s getting at here.
0 doubt in my mind that otto hates Mendy because he was hot ass in 2024. A few times otto got pulled before completing an inning and you could very clearly see the disdain on his face
That said, mets in the first half last year had the same issue as this year. Over worked bullpen because starters consistently going short. I dont doubt the BP was being pushed hard once shit started clicking
