[Rosenthal] “Jonathan India, a non-tender candidate, has re-signed with the Royals: One year, $8M, source tells”

  1. Not happy about this. He should’ve been non-tendered and now he has a roster spot that could’ve been filled by a good 2B

  2. This could end up being really good value if he performs to his 2024 level.

Just based on recent FA signings, we would pay $8 million for a 1 fWAR player in free agency, and he’s averaged 1.6 fWAR over his MLB career. In terms of $/fWAR, 2024 India was worth >$23 million in free agency.

I think there was enough to explain his bad 2025 to justify the gamble. The trial run in the outfield, juggling him up and down the lineup, and I feel like he got banged up on the basepaths like 10 times (including getting freaking spiked in the knee).

  3. Maybe he can find that spark that he had for like the first 7 games of the season again.

  4. I’m indifferent to this. Seems like an overpay, but it isn’t my money.

I don’t see how bringing back all the same players is going to make the offense better, but maybe there is a plan with him and Massey

  5. India:
    .235 BA (career low)
    .326 OBP (career low)
    .344 SLG (career low)
    .670 OPS (career low)
    88 OPS+ (career low)
    8 HR, 42 RBI
    -5 defensive runs saved: -2 LF, -2 3B, – 1 2B

  6. I’m firm believer in the mindset of it’s really hard to have a bad 1 year deal. I’m fine with this

  7. They have new hitting coaches coming in. India can only improve at the plate from last year’s 233/323/346 -0.3fWAR.
Fangraphs projects in 2026 247/339/382 for 1.4 fWAR.
