Miami Dolphins Make Roster Move + ANOTHER One May Be Coming! Dolphins News
[Music] It may be the bye-week for the Miami Dolphins, but they are staying busy. Another roster move was made today. No addition to the 53man roster, but they did place a player on injured reserve, that being safety linebacker Jordan Colbert, who got banged up with a stinger/conussion just a couple weeks ago. And I don’t think it’s a surprise to me that Miami ultimately made this move. Not because Colbert needed to go on IR, but they needed to create some roster space and flexibility for players that could return from IR after the by-week. And this does leave a roster spot open. So Miami now has an opportunity to either sign a player in free agency, activate a player off of IR, and it’s likely going to be the latter. if you’re kind of catching my drift here. We’ll take a look at who it could ultimately be on today’s episode and some other stuff here. But before we get into that, make sure you are subscribed to the channel because we bring you daily Dolphins content and we’re 44 subscribers away from 78,100. Join the Dolphins Today family here as we continue to bring you content every day. No live show on Sunday, unfortunately, because the Dolphins are on by, but we’ll be back the week after. All right. So, if you ask me how the Dolphins ultimately fill that roster spot, I’m under the assumption that it is more likely going to be a player returning from IR and activated the 53man roster rather than them go out and sign a free agent or pluck someone off of another team’s practice squad like they did earlier this week with cornerback AJ Green. There are just so many players on this roster that is currently on IR. Hasn’t been the luckiest year for Miami in terms of the injury bug. And when you look at the players that are eligible to return off of injured reserve right now, Austin Jackson, who’s already had his 21-day practice window open, we’ll talk more about him here in a second, but Jason Sanders has been on IR since the beginning of the season. James Daniels has been on IR since week one. And Darren Waller, the tight end, has been on IO over the last month and ultimately is now eligible to play or at least get activated because he’s served his minimum four games of being out. But if I’m projecting who ultimately is the one returning, it is most likely that Austin Jackson is the player because of that 21-day practice window already be open. He has to be activated to the 53man roster of Miami prior to December 2nd. If he is not activated before December 2nd, he is then no longer eligible to return this season. So, if Miami plans on playing Jackson again this year, he will be back before week 14, but I believe he will play against the Saints coming out of the by-week in week 13. You could also maybe see Waller return, but I don’t think that is a guarantee and I think that is more of a long shot than Austin Jackson. And you project that he will go right back into his role as the starting right tackle for this football team. Larry Borum has filled in and over the last month or so as we highlighted earlier on in the week, he was really dang good over the past month, specifically in that game in Madrid against the Washington Commanders. So, I do think Borum will ultimately head back to the bench and be that swing tackle as Austin Jackson goes back to his starting right tackle role. And you need to evaluate Austin Jackson the rest of the way. We did highlight this on a video earlier this week about a potential by-week change. But the reason why it’s so important to highlight Austin Jackson for the rest of the season is because 2026 is the final year he is under contract with Miami and it’s got a pretty hefty price point. Nothing crazy, but it’s not like an easy contract with one year remaining to move off of. He’s got a $9.8 million base salary with a $15 million cap hit. He gets a $1 million roster bonus if he is still on the Dolphins on March 13th. That’s the third day of the new league year. And he is owed $1.5 million in cash next season. Now, it’s easier to get off of him if you like trade him post June 1st or cut him post June 1st, but I doubt Miami ultimately does that. You need to see what you have in Austin Jackson because if you do not like what you’ve been seeing over the last year and a half with him missing at least nine games this year, he missed half the season last year. He hasn’t been elite enough to warrant the amount of times that he’s missed. Like it might be time for you to ultimately plan to replace him as that starting right tackle. And that is today’s pinned comment. Go down in the comments section, let me know. Should the Miami Dolphins move off of Austin Jackson this off seasonason? Y for yes or N for no. I’ve said this in multiple videos over the last three weeks, but I am done with Austin Jackson. I ultimately want him to return. I want to see what he has left in the tank in the final month and a half of the year, but I am not banking on him to be the long-term right tackle opposite of Patrick Paul anymore. Patrick Paul is a franchise left tackle. I don’t think you could say the same thing about Austin Jackson, which is a bummer because he is still relatively young. He’s still 26, 27 years old, and you hope that he was going to be that right tackle for you for the next 5 to 8 years. But I just don’t think you could count on him long term anymore. And that’s why I’m starting to prepare to find the new franchise right tackle to be that bookend opposite of Patrick Paul this upcoming off season. We got more to get to here in a second, but earlier in the week, I asked for you guys to help us out and share today’s video. And I got to give shout outs to Exi Rain Bows, Axi, Brian AOK, and Gavin Owens. You for answered the call and helped us grow the channel by tweeting out the video link and tagging me on Twitter. I said if you did that, well, I would get you on the show. And shout out to you for for helping us out. Let’s transition over to Darren Waller. Is he potentially another return for the Miami Dolphins? Because he has been really good in the limited opportunity he had with the Dolphins playing only about four games. And do the Dolphins need him back? When is he going to return? Well, let’s start with a potential timeline for Darren Waller. Let’s go back to when he was placed on injured reserve that happened just after the game against the Cleveland Browns on October 22nd. Now, many people expect a injury update on Darren Waller this upcoming Monday when the Dolphins get back into the building after the by-week. Mike McDaniel also provides an injury update on him and if he is going to be having his practice window open. I don’t think he’s ultimately going to be back for this week 13 game against the Saints coming out of the buy, but maybe the week after in New York against the Jets in week 14 is a potential return for the veteran tight end. and he was very crucial for the success on offense for Miami in those four games he played and really it was only three games because he got hurt in the first half of that fourth game he was in against the Cleveland Browns and didn’t even register any reception. So to me, when you look at his production in the three games he played against the Jets on Monday Night Football, the Panthers, and the Chargers, it just shows how impressive and how dominant he was being able to reach the end zone four times and catch 10 passes through three games. And if you actually go on Pro Football Focus and look at Darren Waller’s NFL ranks, out of the 65 qualified tight ends that have gotten at least 10 targets this season, he ranks eighth in touchdowns, only playing in four games, really only three and a half. 16th in completion percentage when targeted, 19th in yards per route run, second in average depth of target, and he has the fifth best QB rating when targeted out of every tight end that’s received at least 10 targets this season. So although has not been on the football field that often this year, only about three and a half games when he was on the field, absolutely dominating. So Darren Waller is a player that you want to get back sooner rather than later. and we’ll talk more about his potential return coming up in a second. But this episode is brought to you by Prize Picks. The football action is even better on Prize Picks. The weather is changing, but the feeling of being right never gets old. So keep the season rolling on Prize Picks by getting $50 instantly in lineups when you play your first $5. It’s so simple to play. Just pick more or less on at least two player stats. And if you get your picks right, you could cash in. Price pick the only app that offers stacks, meaning you could pick the same player up to three times in the same lineup. Want to go more than on Jaylen Wadd receptions, longest reception, and fantasy score? Well, now you can. Only on prize picks. No Dolphins football this weekend. So, I’ve got a different entry for week 12. More than Drake May passing yards against the Bengals. More than Caleb Williams rushing yards against the Steelers. And I think Rasheed Rice gets in the end zone against the Indianapolis Colts. That’s my three player entry for week 12. Join me and the millions of others on prize picks today. Use code CLNS when you download the app and create an account to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That’s code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup prize picks. It’s good to be right. The reason why we’re talking about Darren Waller being such a key player for the Dolphins to return is because you haven’t seen a lot of wide receiver production, excuse me, tight end production with Waller out of the lineup. He went on IR in October 22nd as we mentioned. So, the Dolphins have played four games since then, week um 8, 9, 10, and 11. Greg Doulich is the leading tight end receiver in that stretch with only eight catches for 89 yards. So, not eclipsing what Darren Waller did in his three and a half games he was on the field. Hayden Ruchi’s been active for all four games, but he hasn’t even got a single target. No receptions. And how about Julian Hill finally returning this past week against the Commanders. He had one catch for 14 yards and a QB rating of 118.8. I mean, I don’t think it’s really rocket science here to ultimately come up here and tell you that Darren Waller is the best receiving tight end Miami has on the roster. Now, I actually do like Greg Dulich, and I think he could be a solid maybe tight end two, tight end three as a receiving threat. He’s fast. He’s got uh big catch radius, and he could really make some moves over the middle of the field. But he doesn’t compare to what Darren Waller has ultimately been able to accomplish throughout his career and in the three games that he played in full with the Miami Dolphins. But Miami has been finding another way to combat no Darren Waller. and you’ve seen a lot of people talking about on Twitter and I want to talk about it today. It has been the fact that Mike McDaniel has started to go with a different personnel grouping that being six offensive linemen. We showcased the starting O lineman from left tackle to right tackle earlier on in the show but the player we have not been talking about is Daniel Brunskill who has been an interior offensive lineman. He played right guard when um James Daniels got hurt and before they went to Cole Strange, he filled in at center when Aaron Brewer got hurt for a game. Like he’s been really key to the success for Miami. And it’s him playing that inline tight end position. And actually since week eight, he has played that position more than anyone else. We talked about Doulich being the leading receiver at the tight end position since Waller was placed on IR, but he hasn’t even led the team in snaps in that position. Now, he has had more snaps than Daniel Brunskll ultimately lining out wide or in the slot. But if you’re talking about on the inline as a tight end, Daniel Brun has gotten 57 snaps in that position with Doulshitz only getting 56. And it’s hard to blame for Miami making this change because they experimented with it and it’s paid massive dividends. Since week eight, Daniel Brunskll has been one of the best offensive linemen in the entire NFL. Very limited sample size. Like I mentioned, only playing in about those 57 snaps, but he’s been graded out 77 point overall, 80 pass blocking, 72.2 run blocking. He has not even allowed a pressure, let alone a sack since he’s taken over at that position. And it’s not just Brunkow really finding success as that sixth offensive line where they’ve used him in motion and just ultimately helped set the edge in the run game and the pass game. It’s the entire Miami Dolphins offense. We made this change in week eight when Waller went on IR. Well, let’s look at the first seven weeks of Miami’s offense compared to the last four weeks. In weeks one through seven, Miami had a bottom 10 offense in football. Sure, they ranked top half in EPA per rush, but they were bottom five in EPA per play, EPA per dropback, and rush success rate with only a 33.3% rate. But in the last four weeks, Miami has completely transformed their offense, and they’ve been ranking in the top half, going up against the Falcons, Ravens, Bills, and Commanders. I know, not the best defenses in the world, but Atlanta’s defense is pretty solid, and Miami ultimately torched them up. You see their rankings on screen. They rank in the top half of the NFL in every single category. EPA per play, rush, dropback, success rate. It is not sugarcoating it to say that the insertion of Daniel Brunskill as that sixth inline tight end/offensive lineman has changed the way the Dolphins offense has officially operated. And it’s not only helping the run game be more consistent, but it’s helping in the pass game because it is helping Miami in play action scenarios. What do I mean by that? Well, when you put that sixth offensive lineman on the field, it tells the defense, hey, they have six offensive linemen. It’s more likely than not going to be a run play, and that might be the case more often than not, but it also kind of gets the linebackers, the safeties creeping up a little bit. So when you hit those quick play actions and then have Wadd or Malik Washington cutting on in routes and slants over the middle of the field has really allowed them to have more space with those linebackers and safeties creeping up towards the line of scrimmage biting on the run fake. I mean you look at the play action ranks for Tua and the Dolphins passing offense in this four-week spam. They’re third in dropback percentage. So they’ve been doing playaction plays at the third highest rate. They’re fifth in yards per play. They’re third in completion percentage. They’re second in big-time throw percentage and fourth in QB rating when doing playaction passes over the last four weeks. It has been a gamecher for this Dolphins offense. Daniel Brunkll has benefited from it. Tu has benefited from it. You’ve seen everybody on the Dolphins benefit for it. So, what is the conclusion? What is the point of me bringing this up? Well, we’re talking about Darren Waller potentially returning in the next two, three games for the Miami Dolphins. And although I do want Darren Waller return, there’s no doubt about that. I just want the Dolphins to continue to run this type of personnel grouping. Just because you have Darren Waller back doesn’t mean you should abandon and stray away from this sixth offensive lineman set and personnel because it is creating clearly as we went through the numbers today a lot of advantages for this Dolphins offense giving Tua more time to throw the ball creating more throwing lanes in the back end like when Waller returns do not shy away do not run away from the six O line personnel because it’s working a ton personally when Waller returns I would use him more as a receiver and a bigbodied slot guy or an ex receiver rather than a normal inline tight end. Leave that to Brun. Leave it to Julian Hill who have done that over the past month and provided a lot of good returns for the Miami Dolphins. All right, that’ll do it for today’s show. Appreciate everybody hanging out with us here on a Friday afternoon. If you want more Dolphins football coverage, this is the channel for you. So, subscribe today. [Music]
