Cubs sign reliever Phil Maton
Okay, last night the Cubs made their first real free agent signing of this off season. Reliever Phil Matten, who pitched for the Cardinals and the Rangers last year. Upon first reaction, I didn’t think it was that sexy. These are the careerh highs for Phil Matten last year, including WAR K rate, which is really important for this Cubs bullpen, erra, FIP, holds, opponents batting average, whip, and he only allowed three homers. Also, go follow Wrigleyville forever on Twitter if you haven’t already. Overall, I really like this signing because A, he brings swing and miss. B, he brings a veteran presence in the bullpen, meaning he can potentially help a lot of these young arms the Cubs have. And C, he’s not a reclamation project. It’s not a one-year like let’s hope and pray things turn around for a guy. This guy’s been doing it for a couple years now, man. It’s one move. There’s a lot to be done still, but a great start for Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins this offseason. Let me know your thoughts.
Jed Hoyer made his first offseason signing adding reliever Phil Maton to the Chicago Cubs bullpen.
