MOTIVATED: Jacksonville Jaguars MOTIVATED—Self-Anger POWERS Turnaround and Playoff PUSH

The Jacksonville Jaguars showed how you turn anger into production for one game. Now it could fuel a stretch run towards the playoffs. Uh we’ll end up talking about be better, do better, how the Jaguars are able to use that energy that they found and the the motivation that they found to push them towards the rest of the season. Self-analyzing done right. Liam Co made a few small changes to some things and I think it bodess well for not only now but the future of this team. We’ll start with using anger as motivation. That’s exactly what they did. They were ticked off. And tick was not the word that was used. It was a word that starts with P. I don’t know if I can say it here, but that’s what it was, right? It kind of rhymes with this. All right. They were angry. First of all, let’s examine what they were angry at. Were they angry at how this entire year has gone and them jumping and getting so many penalties and allowing so many sacks? Or were they angry at the fact that they lost the game that they had total control over in Houston? I think that I think it’s a combination of both, but mostly it was the latter because the latter is when it all hit ahead. Every single thing that they had done wrong all season uh caught up to them in the fourth quarter with Houston. The reason why I’m going backwards and talking about that, even though they won a game yesterday, is because the Jaguars have actually won seven out of the last eight quarters that they played, they have played very, very good football, seven out of the last eight quarters. So if they were up 29-10 and they ended up blowing that lead and they won yesterday 35-6, my Duvall County education tells me that that’s 64-6 in three quarters. This is why they were upset because to me, you can’t let things get away, but you also can’t run from the smoke and you can’t run from your mistakes and think you’re gonna get away with them all the time. And that’s what happened the last game. every possible way that the Jaguars have goofed off this year in other games and they’ve gotten away with it. It all hit them in one quarter. The Jaguars could be seven and three right now, but they’re not. They’re six and four, which by the way still puts them in the playoffs. So, that’s the positive. But the bigger positive for me is how they turned that anger into motivation and then were able to turn that into execution. Because if you just have anger and it’s unchecked, it just becomes emotion. And sometimes when you’re emotional, I tell people all the time, if I see two dudes fighting outside of a bar, usually the guy with all of the emotion, if everything else is equal, you’re going to lose. He’s absolutely going to lose. He’s totally angry. I’ve seen it a thousand times. People when you were kids, you used to say, “Make me mad and see what I do.” Yeah, make you mad and then you become emotional and then you’re gonna get whooped. That’s what’s going to happen. But when you’re able to take that and turn that and challenge yourself and turn it into something positive like the Jacksonville Jaguars did yesterday in their 35-6 win uh over the Chargers who are another playoff team, it bolds well for you not just on this past Sunday on November 16th, but for the future because now I know you can do it and now you know you can do it and now the coaches know that you can do it. It ain’t bullet bulletin board material. People always talking about bullet and board material. You don’t need bulletin board material to motivate yourself. Your motivation and I believe I told M O’Brien uh we were waiting to do our squad show and I think I told M O’Brien who’s the host of the Jaguar squad show something similar to this. I don’t wake up worrying about outworking the next guy because what if he’s not working? Why am I using that as my motivation? my enemy and my biggest uh detractor is me if I’m not focused. And she can attest that I said that to her about a week or a week or two ago. We were talking about something else. And it’s funny that I did. We did have that conversation because I actually saw the Jaguars do just that. They had nobody to be angry at but themselves. And that’s coaches included. Right? when you have this avalanche and everything starts to go wrong when everything was just going right and all of a sudden things that hadn’t they may have been addressed but the impact of negative things hadn’t really hit this team the way it did in that fourth quarter against Houston and yesterday because they were able to overcome that now they may have spoiled everyone now and they did it short-handed with people being missing and those guys that were hurt, may want to chomp at the bit to hurry up and get back. I asked Liam Cohen that question just not too long ago at the press conference. Like when guys sit out, do you remember when Michael Jordan got benched by Phil Jackson? And I’m not comparing anybody on this team to Michael Jordan, but I’m just using this as the ultimate ultimate example. Michael Jordan wanted to win so bad. He was he was hurting the team against Portland one year. I believe it was against the Trailblazers. Phil Jackson sat him down and they were down 16 points. It wasn’t until they got back either tied up or took the lead that he looked at Michael and said, “Now go finish the game.” Sometimes watching can help. If Jordan Lewis, who is the leader of this team on the defensive side of the ball, one of them anyway, and Anton Harrison, who has been one of their two best offensive linemen along with Ezra Cleveland and Brian Thomas Jr., Brian Thomas Jr., if Brian Thomas Jr. can sit there. Now, Anton has played well. Jordan Lewis has played well, but BT has struggled and and Britain Strange, I’m going to throw him in there, but only because he was also out and injured, but he wasn’t struggling. Brian Thomas Jr. is the one who has been struggling prior to uh his injury. You get a chance to sit, you get a chance to watch. Jacobe Myers comes in, catches the balls that it seems like you were dropping. The receiving core having a real good game yesterday. the running game working. I want him to be angry enough to envision himself to fixing whatever was going on with him before he got injured and realize the icing that he could be on this cake that we call the 2025 Jaguars season. That’s why I asked the question because sometimes when you sit and watch, you have an opportunity to do a lot of self analyzing, right? You have a lot of opportunities to sit and watch somebody else do it. And the last thing you want, you want your team to win, but you don’t want them to be at their absolute best when you’re not playing. And the other thing about it is it shows you that this team, they’re not going to wait on anybody. They’re not going to wait on anybody. They’re going to fix it and they’re going to go out and play. Now, why do I think it’s so important? Because I believe Liam Cohen just asked guys to play better. Trade deadline’s gone. Jacobe Myers has been here for two games now. Trade deadline’s gone. Whatever you are missing or whatever isn’t playing well for you isn’t just going to walk through that door until you go and get it in the offseason. You have to win right now. You have to win today if you want to be a part of the team. If you want to want this team to have as much su as much success as they as they’re supposed to this year, there was only one thing that was going to work. Wasn’t no magic pill. Wasn’t nobody’s going to be able to shake a wand and make it happen. You just had to be better. You just have to play better. You have to play with more fire, more passion, more desperation, and do the things that you need to do in order to win. And that’s exactly what they did yesterday. And I hope it carries on through the rest of the season because if it does, we might be talking about some good football in January. Before we get to that, let’s talk about how self analyzing was done right and the coaches seem to push all the right buttons. We’ll get to that in just a second here on Locked on Jaguars. All right, rolling along here on a victory Monday for the Jacksonville Jaguars. coming off the heels of a 35-6 shellacking, whooping, if you will, of the Los Angeles Chargers who um it seemed like the Jaguars forced them into a lot of things that they didn’t want to do. And I love the physicality because I look I ain’t rooting for guys to get hurt, but this is a physical game. Yeah, Chargers laid it out all over the place. Dudes look like they ain’t want no more of that smoke, that pressure, and that physicality. And that’s what the Jaguars talked about actually being. And that’s what we’ve always wanted here. The identity of a tough, gritty football team. That really, really does personify the fans, the city, and uh you got it yesterday on full display. Now you’re going to expect it all the time. And I get it. Once they show you that they can do it, you want them to do it all the time. Good news for you. Good news is they did it because of self analyzing, self-motivation. They realized that the players realize that they’re good enough to get this done. Can’t look around for a magic play call. Can’t look around for stuff to be perfect for you. Can’t always look to your neighbor. You have to be the one to do it yourself. You can’t let mistakes linger like Trevor Lawrence did not after the interception in the first half. That was an atrocious throw and even an attempt. You saw the immediate correction and then you also saw Liam Cohen still have faith in it. I think the Jaguars coaching staff in a sense, and this is just me and this is my analysis of it, it appears that when I spoke last week about you can’t expect them to not have to coach around their limitations and things that I don’t believe they do well. I think the things that they have struggled with a little bit, they attacked it head on and said, “Nope, we’re going to have faith in these guys to do it, but we’re going to hold them. We’re going to put BTA this week and we’re going to tell them you just got to go out and do it. There’s nothing nothing nothing that motivates players more than sitting down than having somebody else having the competition take your place. Liam never said that. But if you listen to something that he said last week when he was asked about the pass rush, he said, “Yeah, we’re going to look at it. We’re going to look at what guys are doing and we’re going to look at anybody who can help us get it done.” Basically, he’s telling you, you got to play better or we’re going to play other people. You saw Stri yesterday. You saw BJ Green make a great play that was called a penalty and it shouldn’t when Justin Herbert folded like a lawn chair. But the thing is is those are the things that we needed to see. And you also saw the people in front of them. Josh Hines Allen, congratulations for breaking Tony Brack Tony Bracken sack record, being the all-time leader of the Jaguars in sacks. Trayvon Walker early and often making himself a menace. This is what competition does, man. And Liam talked about that today uh at his at his interview uh that he did with the media, the virtual interview. You can find it on jaguars.com where he was just like guys earning their place in the 11 on 111 because of what they’ve done in special teams. He says this is what you want your team to be. You want the competitiveness that even though if you’re not playing, you’re not sitting there with your, and this is me just giving my spill on it, you’re not sitting there with your lip poked out. You’re being a professional and you’re continuing to grind and you’re not waiting on injuries either. You’re forcing your way on the football field because the team trusts you. These are the things that actually lead to a team being good. When folks always say, uh, we’re going to lift the floor of the team. Really, that’s not just in talent. That’s also in mindset, effort, and attitude. And some of that has to be from self motivation, honesty with yourself about whether you’re playing better or not. And I can bet you your bottom dollar that the way that they played this week, the passion and the fire that they played with came from some things that the coaches told them. It cames from some things that the film showed them. There was selfcorrection. There wasn’t there was nothing vague about the answers that you got before Sunday and the answers that you got after Sunday. The things that Liam said after a loss, you saw a week later an exact reflection of his disappointment and he says it started with them and sometimes I’ll explain what that means in a second. He saw what that means. So, I think that they took a little bit of a different approach, and I don’t know that they did, but I can only use my imagination and say at some point, the reason why you saw a more polished, a more cohesive team yesterday was because they said, “You’re either going to do it or we’re going to find somebody else that can do it.” And maybe not in those terms because this ain’t college football where you can just replace a guy because you got 105 people on your team and you can revoke someone’s scholarship without any, you know, trepidation. You can’t do that in the NFL because of the salary cap. So there are some situations where you just have to find a way to extract the best out of these players. An example is I see this little thing on on Tik Tok and on u social media all the time where this guy asks his daughter all of these tricky things to do for $20. There’s like a a ball uh floating in a half a cup of water. He says, “Get the water out without touching it.” So, what she does is she pours more water into the glass and then it starts to fill up and eventually it overflows and the and the ball that’s floating on top of the water falls out and he had to pay his daughter. I wonder what kind of motivation did the coaches invest into the players? What did they put into them that extracted out the best of them yesterday? And can they continue to manufacture that? Can they continue to get that done? This ain’t like John Henderson where you just going to walk up and smack somebody. Remember John Henderson used to get smacked before the game to get him right. What kind of not a literal but figurative smack can you give this team to ensure that they’re always going to be motivated? Playing time. uh uh you know having playing time be the thing that’s up in the air. Maybe telling them you’re not playing up to snuff and you know what you’re being paid and you’re better than that. Do you challenge them that way? Do you do you kind of motivate them for being super super transparent in the film room and telling them what is acceptable and what isn’t? Do you get from the point where you’re you’re motivating with a tough love hug and you’re really really motivating with tough words that cut through a lot of alpha a lot of alpha guys that’s on that team guys that have been good forever and you’re telling them hey see with me I’m it might be a reverse psychology situation you going to let him do you like that you’re better than that why why would you do that what’s going on and then it also comes with things that the coaching staff has done. You You saw a lot of quick pitches yesterday, a quick toss as opposed to handoffs, right? You saw Trevor Lawrence with the band on his arm that maybe made the communication between him and the rest of the players really, really good. So, you’re not sitting there running out of time on the on the on the the snap clock every single time. They had a couple of issues yesterday, but they called, you know, a couple of timeouts. timeouts that normally you would want to save in a closer game, but nevertheless, they got the job done. I love the selfcorrection. I love the analyzing what needed to be fixed and coming out and not waiting for it to fix itself, but going out and forcing it and telling people this is what has to get done. We’re going to call what we need to call. We’re going to call it the way we want to call it, and you have to perform. No more going around and and and and and walking around and ducking the smoke and working around your weaknesses. No, you just have to make sure that you know how to go out here and play football the way that we want to play football because at the end of the day, if you don’t, somebody else will. And I think it’s the tough love approach that this team really, really, really needed and it was a good thing for the fans to watch manifest itself on the field yesterday. I’ll talk about how be better and do better can be a thing. A thing. Not just a temporary moment, but a thing for the rest of this season with the Jaguars. We’ll do it in the third and final segment here on Locked on Jaguars. Got to let you know that FanDuel is our sponsor for the day and the NBA is back. Just tap in wherever you get your podcast, whether you watch or listen, give us a try and we’ll be there. um love informing on how you can turn a moment into more than just a memory. Like I don’t want to look back and say, “Man, remember that day they beat the heck out the Chargers and that was it gave us a glimpse as to what they could be.” And you know, we’re still the little engine that could that’s trying to be that consistently every single day. the brand of football that they played yesterday. I I want to see it all the time. And I know it won’t always be a 29 point victory, a lopsided victory, and I know it won’t always go the way that you want because there’s only been one undefeated team in the history of the National Football League, but it will give you a shot each and every week. playing that physically, uh, mistake free, only one penalty for five yards, not letting mistakes compound and continue to drag on. I think it’s very, very good for the Jaguars that they have that muscle memory. And this is not necessarily a muscle thing. This is a mind thing, but I think they need to just keep remembering, man, that there’s always the next play. We just got to keep going and we got to trust ourselves and we got to give maximum effort. There’s nothing in life worse than coming up short knowing that you left a whole bunch out there. Knowing that there’s a whole bunch of things, seven, eight, nine, 10 things that you can point at. Single plays that could have changed the game like the one in Houston. There’s nothing worse than that. Sometimes you’re going to come up short. Sometimes the ball is going to beat you. You’re not going to win every game. Sometimes your ultimate goals aren’t going to be met, but at the very least, you know, you left it all out there and you just have to get better as a whole or as an individual. But to know that you were good enough to get something done, I’ll give you an an example of why that’s so bad. We were buying a mattress once and I told my wife, “I want you to go to this place and this place. They’re right down the street from each other. go to both of them first before you buy anything. She stopped at the first one and it was a great deal. It was a great deal. She dropped down 20% payment on it. We bought it. I said, “So, they must have been better than the people down the street.” She said, “You know, I never went.” And I said, “I’m going to stop just to see.” We went in there and the bed was $400 less than down the street. and she saw how that drove me crazy because I’ve always been like that my entire life is like we could have took 10 minutes and save 400 bucks, right? So, she always does that now. She’s not as impulsive. She’s not as quick to to to to buy things without me or without us making sure we cross all of our tees and dot all of our eyes. And I think that example is good. But now there are other examples where I’ve done the exact same thing but in reverse. I’ve had to acquies to the way that she wants to do things and that’s why it works. Right? So there’s this thing where the Jaguars have to absolutely know that they are in control of the things that they can control. Can’t control whether another team is better. If both teams play as good as they possibly can and they’re playing as better than our coaches playing or it’s just they’re just a little bit better of a team than our coaches, then so be it. Then we got to keep working. But there’s nothing worse than losing a game like that one at Cincinnati earlier in the one against Houston. That can give you the opportunity to make sure that you’re always putting your best foot forward regardless of what the record is. So that’s why I think this this can this can become a mantra for them as opposed to just a moment yesterday that we sit here and remember. When you when you’ve had a franchise that haven’t won a whole bunch, there about five or six key moments in Jaguars history that you remember Miles Jack wasn’t down. All of those things, right? the Murice Jones drew catching run in Pittsburgh. Dave Garage scrambling. Mike Thomas catching a touchdown. There there’s there’s a lot of things that you can remember. I want this to be so normal that the Jaguars play this way is that you actually have to Google or you have to actually have somebody remind you of all of those key moments. Generally teams that that win or that are always successful, they have so many moments that people might not remember. Okay, everybody remembers Tyreek with 13 seconds left or the Chiefs with 13 seconds left in the same game where Tyreek did the catch and run and he ran through the whole Buffalo Bills defense and about 200 of their fans on the way to a touchdown. You always remember that because they are way up here. But those memories are attached to winning. Some of the Jaguars best memories are attached to not winning. to create more memories, you have to be in the moment, man. And they were in the moment and they were self-motivated. And I think from a big picture standpoint, this really absolutely helps them as a young staff, as a franchise in the first year of a new regime. And James Gladstone probably gives a little hat tip like, “Okay, last week everybody wanted to run me out of here saying all of my stuff didn’t work. Look what they went and did.” And see, that’s another thing that playing subpar, even for one quarter does. It makes everybody question the whole damn thing. And really, it wasn’t all about the whole thing. It was just about this. It was about that heart. It was about that selfch checkup. It was about them being motivated and just playing better because nobody was going to walk. Fred Taylor, Tony Belli, and Jimmy Smith were not walking through that door to help them in those games. They had to do that for themselves. And I’m proud of the fact that they did it yesterday. And I’m more proud for the fans that left the the stadium happy because a lot of those guys are every day. And even if you’re not, I’m glad you were happy today. The Jaguars are sitting there at six and four. And don’t look now, but the Colts have to play the Chiefs. And I’m trying to figure out who I want to win that game. Do I want to create more distance from the Chiefs in terms of the wild card because they’re always lurking or do I want the Colts to go get their head bashed in so it allows the Jacksonville Jaguars to get that much closer to them in the division? Watch out for Baltimore sitting there at five and five and they’re a threat also. They got a tough schedule down the stretch. A lot of these teams that the Jaguars have to play, they all got to play each other. and a couple of them, the Colts, um, Denver, they’re still on the Jaguars schedule. So, the Jaguars can control a little bit of that, too. Hopefully, they turn what happened the moment yesterday turns into momentum and they keep doing it. But, it’s nice to know that they have the acumen to self evaluate and then apply it on the field a week after what might have been the worst loss in Jaguars history. Um, I hopefully you guys enjoyed the show today and if you did, make sure you check out the squad show tonight at 6:30. It is Monday, uh, November 17th. We’ll be going at 6:30. 1. Back when I was racing in nascar, my crew chief began reaching in the car before he would he latched my window net and he would smack my helmet. What the heck! He told me I drive better mad. He was right.

  2. This team is good. Jag fans have to relax. It’s a new regime that everyone’s still getting used to Trevor included. Give him another year under this offense and I think he’ll be better. We’re not even healthy and we played a good game. Once everyone is back, no one want to see us.😤🐆🐆🐆

Also I want the chiefs beating the colts. And we need to beat the broncos and colts at least once.

  3. Jaguars re not a good team when compared to the whole nfl as a whole. I’m jags fan from day 1 5th grade, and this team is not good. Can’t call a team good that shows no consistency, I never drink koolaid I just try to keep it consistent

  4. I'm not getting hyped like after the KC game just yet… That other LA team did us like we did the chargers don't forget! And the seahawks/Houston games were frustrating to say the least. On a positive note the insane amount of penalties seems to be fixed. But when I see some consistent wins I'll allow myself to get hyped! We have our players coming back from injuries and a relaxed schedule besides the broncos and colts/2 we are definitely playoff bound if we don't get stupid and stay consistent

  5. I was at the game and cheering along with other Jaguars fans. It’s the first game I’ve been to where they won. I was beginning to think I was bad luck but they looked really good on Sunday. I highly recommend going to games. We need more fans there. The tickets are very reasonably priced and getting to and from the game with public transportation couldn’t be easier. You park in one of the many designated lots and the busses take you directly to and from the game without stopping and they get the right of way out of the stadium area. I was home at about 4:50pm which means it took less than an hour to get home after the game ended.

  6. We came from South Georgia to see the game, a birthday present from my daughter. We’ve been to five other games, all loses. She’s been raised a Jags fan, and I was so happy they finally won with me there. Now, all well and good, but if they don’t stay laser focused and stay physical, it won’t matter in the long run. Go Jags!
