Part Two of Don Maloney’s Interview with Sportsnet

  1. No NHL team will admit they don’t want top 5 picks at any given time under any circumstances.

    Don Baloney, HOLD MY BEER!

  2. About a potential Rasmus trade:
“ We know that, but we’re not racing out to do anything, unless it’s something that says, ‘OK, this is something — someone wants to step up….And it’s not draft picks”

    🤮🤢

  3. I mean, are you really going to say in an interview “we plan to tank the season as we don’t believe in our players” and then have said players signed to long term contracts?

I’m of the opinion that are saying what they need to say publicly, but privately they know we are rebuilding

  4. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter what Don says. This team is not making the playoffs. Even if they tried to do something incredibly stupid like trading our first for a veteran player we’d be on any good players no trade list. No top free agent will sign here. The only way this team gets competitive is drafting and developing.

  5. They are afraid of a long rebuild, but not acknowledging the opportunity in a year like this one will cast this franchise into years of being at the bottom.

  6. Wow this one is even worse than yesterdays in my opinion.

“we need more kadris not less” We need more 35 year old players? Are you fucking delusional?! What winning have we done with Kadri on the team, why would you not get value for him before he inevitably declines?

I don’t like how negative his comments on zayne are, even if they’re true.

He talks about how the guys we traded that didn’t want to re-sign would probably help us right now – help us what? Be 18th place in the league? Then goes on to say they don’t want to draft in the top 5 🤬🤬🤬 just absolutely brain dead.

I think the most concerning part is them saying they’d like to sign Rasmus still, and that if they do trade him they don’t want picks because they’ll be later in the draft. Didn’t he just talk about the Dallas model of picking good players later in the draft? Apparently not.

This is all so beyond frustrating to read as a fan, it really feels like this team will never get out of being mid – all signs seem to point to them rushing the rebiggle. At least there was some positive comments about Conroy, he’s the only one I have faith in at this point.

  7. If they let Conroy walk when it seems like he is the only one in management trying to do it the right way, maaaaan I will be so fucking done with this team.

  8. I think this interview was a worst-case scenario for us fans…

I’ve been a Flames fan since the early/mid 90’s. I’ve seen some reeeally dark times. I’ve seen some really great times. Most recently, the Tzachuk, Lindholm, Gaudreau time, although short, was a wonderful glimmer of hope of what could be. It is amazing to me how quickly things change.

Although I believe Coviid may have played a large part in why we couldn’t keep some of the best prospects we’ve ever drafted here in Calgary, it was up to management to weather that storm. Through inept leadership, we find ourselves in our current situation. Now, like before, we have our top brass claiming the house is not on fire (excuse the pun), and we’re just going to continue on our current trajectory.

The lack of respect this organization shows its fanbase is appalling. As I’ve stated earlier, I’ve been a lifelong Flames fan. However, my tolerance to support a management team that doesn’t seem to realise the current atmosphere is waning dramatically.

If they can’t respect why the core fanbase of this team is frustrated and wanting dramatic change, then they never will.

  9. I’m confused why they’re doing this interview at all. Whether its true or whether its posturing, whatever it is – I don’t see the benefit on their end compared to just staying quiet and keep doing what they’re doing. Its weird.

  10. What happens if Friedman comes on tonight and doubles down saying all of this is truly how management feels and not some elaborate smokescreen designed to fool everyone?

  11. Man this dude isn’t even consistent:

“We prefer a Dallas model, where they got Miro Heiskanen at three, but also got good players in the 20s, in the 30s.”

(Talking about the return they want for trading Andersson) “And it’s not draft picks, because with anybody who wants Rasmus, in all reality, their draft pick would be in the 20s to 32nd. It’d be different if you said yeah, you’re guaranteed a top-three or top-five pick.”

So you want to follow the Dallas model and draft good players in the 20s and 30s (which is what literally every org is trying to do btw, so not really an actual strategy, but I digress), but you don’t want draft picks in the 20s and 30s? This is the guy running the organization? We might be toast.

  12. Honestly, if I’m Andersson, Coleman, OR Kadri, and they care about winning, I’d want to get the fuck out of here as soon as possible even more after this interview. You’re passengers on the Titanic and you know it’s gonna sink cause they’re purposely driving it straight into the iceberg.

EDIT: And I’m not saying that in a good way. Team Tank and rebuild is one thing, Team Tank because you’re too dumb and ignorant to realize it is another.
