The Franchise Ep. 6 | Week in the Life of an NFL Player, Story Behind KC Wolf, Chiefs vs Broncos

It’s another week here in Kansas City. We’re over halfway through the season. This weekend against the Denver Broncos. The biggest game of the season so far. Yes. I’m a hardwork man. I wear a steel hard hat. I can ride, rope, a hammer and paint. Do things with my hands that most men can’t. Come Monday morning, I’m the first to arrive. I ain’t nothing but business y’all from 9 to 5. We’re the ultimate routine team. We get in a regimented way of the way we do things. I think it permeates all through the building. There’s no surprises. got everything on. Julie, top tier, best in the business. Yeah, you see what she’s doing right now? She getting that in that ankle right there. Trying to get a little pop. We’re just trying to get a little more mobility in the joint itself. Sometimes you’ll get what we call a cavitation, and that’s the pop. And when his pops, it sometimes is a little eerie. I’m a hardworking man. I got long for a piece of the promis land. And I’m burning my way to get up in the morning and do it all over again. cuz I’m a hard living hardwork man. You don’t know what day it is, but you know what game day is. And that’s the only thing that’s important. Preparing throughout the week to get to the game day. And women, too. It’s amazing when you think about why people become fans of a team. A lot of times it’s because like their mom or dad took them to a game when they were little or they would watch the game at certain holidays with their family. But one of the things we hear a lot is that a lot of fans became fans because they interacted with Casey Wolf at some point in their life. And I remember getting my org chart for the first time on the org chart. It had a little box that said mascot. And I remember thinking, “Wow, I’m going to be responsible for the mascot.” You imagine that that mascot is mostly on game day. What I didn’t know was all of the other ways that the mascot comes to life during a week. Lamar Hunt, our founder, was all about creating the best fan experience and really bringing joy and entertainment to fans. And then I think he really found the person inside the suit that also allowed it to really come to life. We had one person within that same suit for, you know, 30 plus years. I’d been told from day one that he was one of the most amazing people I would get to meet. Okay. So, when was the last time you were back in this room? You know what? I was in this room. Oh. Oh, no. I’m sorry, Dad. Hey, make sure and get that on the bloopers. We didn’t mean to get I have been hit harder than that. father. So, I started just KC Wolf in 1990. It sounds crazy, but uh some things you just know you were meant to do. When I interviewed with the Chiefs, I realized this was more than just put on a costume on a Sunday. When you’ve got the most passionate fan base in the NFL, you need to be the most passionate mascot in the NFL, too. I still remember the Raiders game. Sometimes we would ride out on a Harley-Davidson and try to look like a tough guy and then I’d get off the bike and act like I was roughing up the Raiders fans. They were they were basically just friends of mine that I went to church with. But uh I told them, “Hey, you let me beat you up. I’ll give you a ticket to the game.” And so that was always a pretty good tradeoff for them. We had so much fun doing those skits. Mascots are are pretty global and universal. It’s also something that doesn’t require language, which is really interesting when you think about how do you create a global brand and connect with fans that speak different languages. I just thought I’m we’re talking the Kansas City metro area. I didn’t know what I was talking about back then. I just I’ve seen how a big Chief’s Kingdom is. It’s not just here in the United States. It’s start to spread around the world. A few weeks ago at the Raiders game, for the first time ever, introducing more than just Casey Wolf as part of our Wolf Pack, we launched Casey Oolf. to have Casey Wolf and Casey O. Wolf show up um on the field during that game in that kind of like Spider-Man meme moment, I think, just helped bring this whole new Casey Wolf to life and and now Casey Wolf will get to be in Ireland and and hopefully bring a lot of joy to a lot of Irish fans. The greatest part of the story when Casey Wolf showed up was what fans didn’t know at the time. Um, Dan Mirs had retired from being Casey Wolf earlier this summer before the season. I can imagine the phone call to him to say, “We want you to come back. Want you to go back into the suit, but this time you’re the Irish Irish cousin.” Um, I think he was probably pretty excited to to kind of come back, but also get to do something a little bit different. I thought, you know what? I hope I’m still in good enough shape to do this. Father time catches up with everybody. No matter how hard you work to stay in shape and I I’d worked really hard to try to uh maintain my conditioning throughout the years. But uh I I told the chiefs, you know, and at the time my wife was sick um and I wanted to be there for her as she um if she was going to recover cuz I knew that was going to take a long time. But I also became a grandpa last year. And that was I I got to look and I’m like, you know what? I’m a full-time mascot. I’m a part-time grandpa. And I told the Chiefs, I’m like, I want to be a full-time grandpa and a part-time mascot. And I was just blessed to get to do that. But yeah, it’s always hard to step away uh not only from the job I love, but just uh the people that I love. As I as I’ve said over and over again, I love the people I work with at the Arrowhead Stadium. I love Chief’s Kingdom, I love the new KC Wolf. He is a fantastic guy and he’s he’s doing a great job. And for me, it’s a it’s kind of a proud moment. I’m kind of sitting up in the stands like, “Go get him. Go get him.” It’s kind of like cheering for my son almost. It’s just caused me to realize just the impact you can have on people’s lives uh each and every day. You know, I think I think we take that for granted sometimes. you know, no matter what you do, whether you’re a a a plumber, a teacher, an accountant, or a NFL mascot, you know, we’re called to use our platforms, our time, our talents, our treasures to go out and to make an impact in the lives of others because a life that’s spent selfishly is wasted. A life that’s investing and helping others, encouraging others, you know, uh that’s going to bear fruit for a long, long time. And that’s what I’ve tried to do with this Casey Wolf platform is just continue to use it to invest in the lives of others. On my desk at Arrowhead, I had a quote for years and years that hung there that said that laughter is like changing a baby’s diaper. It’s not going to change anything permanently, but it sure makes things more bearable for a while. And it was just my reminder that yeah, what I’m doing here causing people to laugh and smile, it might not change their circumstances permanently, but it sure is going to brighten their day today. And so each day, that’s what I tried to do. Just go out and uh you know, just try to bring some smiles to people’s faces and uh uh let them know they’re loved. you know, 30 plus years later, it is again become something that is a an icon within the Chief’s world, within Chief’s Kingdom. I think most people have interacted with Casey Wolf at some point in their life. Um, and now getting to bring Casey Wolf to other countries, to other parts of even the US is something that we love to do more and more of so that more people can interact with him. We just see so many more opportunities to keep bringing this character to life. here in Denver against the Broncos. It’s a 1313 tie. It’s set up for a great clash. Here’s a third and 11. Lofting it to Sutton. Incomplete. And the crowd is roaring looking for a flag that does not exist. Then Lutz is coming onto the field forever. Come on, bro. Every game’s a battle. It doesn’t matter, you know, where you picked, who you have. It’s going to be a tight game. It’s going to come down to probably a one-sore game and maybe whoever has the ball last. That’s the way to hold the three. Period. Hey, that’s the way to hold the three. That’s well done in this division. It’s getting harder. Um the coaches that have come in the division, the players now that have been drafted or through free agency are at the other three teams that we need to play. It just seems like every year they get tougher and tougher. Nobody’s going backwards. It doesn’t feel like in our division. I think it’s going to be one of those divisions where, you know, we’re going to be in there swinging. Good again. Three for three on the day. Proverbs 27:17, iron sharpens iron. I mean, a lot of people talk about that in this particular game because you need that. You got to be hard on each other during the week so that when you face those adverse situations in the middle of the game where all the bullets are flying, it’s time for everybody to pull together. Third and six. There’s the pass breaking the tackles. Kelsey and Travis takes it to the end zone. A what an effort by Travis Kelce. Everyone’s chasing him. It is blocked. It helps you though. It helps you in your work process and your work habits, all that stuff. You know, you can’t take a day off. Right here. Right here. Fourth quarter. Right here. Third and five. And they’re down on this play clock again. Expect pressure. Yeah. Knicks better be careful. Throws it. It’s tough. Uh it’s not easy and every year is different. Every team is different. And the Broncos tie it on a 54 yd field goal by Will Lutz. Third and 10. Broncos just tied it with a 54 yd field goal. Worthy goes in motion to the left, sets up three by one. Mahomes low snap. Here comes a blitzer. Mahomes is in trouble and has no shot. He’s sacked at the 14. You know, we were in the um in the indoor facility at practice the other day. And I remember in 2013 when we got here, you know, you look up at the in the ceiling and all the banners that are there and it was kind of about half halfway through the football field. Now it’s the whole football field from the one end zone to the other end zone on the ceiling is the whole way across is banners now. And you look at it, it’s from 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 20, and it just keeps going. And you you you appreciate that because there’s so much hard work that goes into that, but it does not come easy. He’s deciding whether to run. They’re inviting the run here, but don’t do it. Here’s Nicks on second and eight for a big throw. And it’s caught by Franklin. And the Broncos are set up now to win the game. Teams are clearly loading up to do whatever is possible to beat the Chiefs. It’s nice to say we win again. It’s nice to have a hat and t-shirt celebration in the locker room in December. Uh but again, you have to earn it. There’s nothing given to you in the NFL. Chiefs dig in as Lutz lines it up. Snap is down. lets his field goal is good and they win by a score of 22-9 and the Chiefs fall to 5 and five on the season. And they know they got a target on their back. The Chiefs know that. But at the same time, that’s what makes the sport compelling. Can you sustain? Can you get back to having that opportunity, that one day opportunity that only two teams in the league get every year to win a championship?

  1. Kansas City's offensive issues stem from Andy Reid refusing to evolve beyond his pro level college style shotgun drop back, RPO, QB improvisation- centric based scheme. It dominated for years 2018-2022, but the best defenses have fully adapted while the rest of the league has shifted toward under-center structures, wide-zone run games, and heavy play-action that create rhythm and easy throws. KC almost never uses those concepts, leaning on the same spread looks and option routes that no longer produce consistent separation. The system has gone stale, and it's falling behind the direction modern offenses are trending. It's starting to mirror the late McCarthy-Rodgers era – talented quarterback, outdated scheme, and a scheme philosophy that refuses to grow. They can't keep living off being 30th in under center usage rate & 85% in (1st by wide margin) in shotgun going forward!!!

  2. I was in elementary school in the early 90s in Lee's Summit and they had Dan/Wolf at the school assembly a couple times. I remember one kid asked if he was married. Without missing a beat, he said, yeah I'm married to a fox. Class act. Hard shoes to fill.

  3. Why doesn’t it surprise me that even the mascot is one of the most decent humans to draw breath.
Everything about this organisation, from the founding family to auxiliary staff, exudes class.
As an overseas fan, The Franchise is a great way to keep informed and educated.
Great content and production, keep it up !

  4. Dan is amazing!! Met him at a work event and he made everyone happy and went out of his way for a special one on one moment with me I’ll never forget!! Thank you!!

  5. lets shake it up this week.. How bout Andy shows that "greatest offensive guru" title that he some how gained. tell him to scrap the 20 screen plays a game

  6. Wow! This was a powerful one! Dan is the man we all should try to be! The man behind the mask is the longest serving team member! Way to go buddy you enjoy that retirement!
